GAF! Sex offender just moved in next door. To petition or not to petition?

I live in a condo, they are spaced closely but I've never had any problems with neighbors, the opposite actually. There are frequent "block parties" and ladies night, ect. Well the last few days there's been a moving van and I figured "sweet, new neighbors. Can't wait to meet them".

However, the leader of our home owners association was obligated to let everyone know that this new neighbor is a registered sex offender and included the link to the LAPD sex offender registry. Me, being a crazy protective mother went to go check him out. I immediately flipped the fuck out.

Our neighborhood has a park and pool and kids are everywhere. My neighbors are just as pissed as I am, but my question is... Do I start a petition to get him kicked out or give the guy a chance to prove he's been rehabilitated and on the right track? I don't want to ruin this mans life if he is trying to start over, but I also don't want him to be around kids and getting off.

Edit: The listed charges:
Crime: oral copulation with a minor under 14 years of age or by force or fear, Statute: 288a(c)
Crime: attempted sodomy with person under 14 years or with force, Statute: 286(c)
Crime: sexual penetration of victim with foreign object, Statute: 289
Crime: prior code - rape by force, Statute: 261(2)
Crime: sexual battery, Statute: 243.4
Crime: assault with intent to commit a specified sex offense, Statute: 220
 
It depends.

Someone who is 19 can become a registered sex offender if he/she sleeps with a 17 year old.

Do you know what he did to become a sex offender? Was it pedophilia? If so I can understand you worry, if it's something like the above then it's not likely he has any interest in little kids.

Ok, what was his sexual offense? For all you know he could've gotten slapped as a sex offender for some BS charge. It's happened before.

And no I'm not sex offender defense force, before anyone suggests it. But if this guy wasn't convicted of something relating to rape or pedophilia (like maybe he just got caught fucking a donkey or something) then perhaps it's not time to bring out the torches just yet?
 
Is it 100% certain he was guilty of his crimes? He could just as easily be a wrongfully convicted person. Need more details.

As far as what to do if the guy was truly guilty there really are no good answers.
 
well one of the first questions is what was the nature of the crime, not sure if the LAPD list gives any info but there's a big difference between molesting young children and lets say dating a 16 year old at 19

Y'all can keep saying how he did his time. That's true. However, it's entirely normal for OP to want him gone with kids around.
 
Sounds fairly ambiguous what you are worried about, considering you mention young women and children. Are sex offenders listed for what they did or no?

Also this is about to be a huge thread.
 
Do you know specifically why he was on the sexual offender list? Is the online info that detailed?

If it was one of those BS reasons where he got put on the list for being in highschool and dating a fellow classmate, or just peeing outside then I personally wouldn't care about him living near me.

If he was pedo, then yeah I wouldn't feel comfortable, especially if I had children.
 
Yeah it all depends on the nature of his crimes. If it's some overtly sensitive 'banged a 16 year old' judgement, you'll be right.
 
I'd want to know what he did before making any decision to get him kicked out. Like others have said, even urinating in public can get you on that list
 
This is a nearly impossible question to answer without knowing what he's on the registry for.

Edit: Looking at this, it looks like if she found him on the registry, she more than likely knows what he did, and I would think (or at least hope) she wouldn't be flipping out about her kids if there wasn't something about children in his report already.

I think were gonna need what his crime was to make a decision.

Did he have sex with a teen when he was in his early 20's?..Did he piss in a playground after a few to many drinks?..
Or is he a kiddy diddler?!..

They have a pool. This guy may have peed in a pool before. If there's even the slightest chance that this guy is a pool pee-er, he needs to find somewhere else to live.

If it's in a playground, yes. It's considered exposing yourself where kids are...even if it's at 2am.



And, yes, if he dated a 16 year old when he was 19, then I'm thinking you've got nothing to worry about. If he got drunk one night and went streaking, I think you're ok.

You said you met him and freaked out...why did you freak out? Something about him? Or just your imagination running wild?
 
Depends entirely on what he did. I know this may sound crazy but if it's not online, why not talk to him and ask him what he did. Sure it may be weird, but if he's honest at least this could put your fears to ease.
 
We definitely need more information, but if it is child related, I'd make damn sure my kids knew exactly what he looks like and to stay the hell away from him. Can you really get rid of someone from the complex just by petition? As long as he's in compliance with the law is there really anything you can do?
 
Ask him about it when he comes around to tell you that's he's registered.

Then make the call based on that new information.
 
I think the right thing to do is welcome him, talk to him, engage him but make it perfectly clear that you will not tolerate him around your children. It's better to stabilize him and give him some clear limits.

Seems hard to pull off though.
 
Touchy issue.

He served his time, which in our justice system must mean someone deemed him properly rehabilitated. On the other, maybe you'd feel like you share part of the blame if you let him be and he went back to his molestery ways.

Also have to wonder why we bother releasing sex offenders at all. Given their lifelong offender status and limited freedoms even when released it's clear that as a society we don't really believe that such perversion can be rehabilitated. If you can't rehabilitate someone then what purpose is the system serving? Vengeance? If you want vengeance why not kill them and be done with it? Reflective of a society that thinks of itself as enlightened by still craves vengeance for misdeeds.

Doesn't even have to be at a playground. If it is within a certain number of yards of one, even without a clear line of sight, they could get you for that.
 
I understand why you would be worried, but I agree that it depends on his offense. Peeing outside or being 18 and dating a 16 year old aren't worth getting out of bed for.
 
Sex offender is not synonymous with pedophile. Without knowing what his crime was I'm very much inclined to say leave him alone and mind your own business.
 
The majority of sex offenders are completely normal people who made some mistakes or messed up at one point or another, jumping to getting him evicted without any knowledge of his situation seems like a bad idea, especially since it's so hard being a sex offender already.

Some guy in Virginia got charged (but acquitted) of indecent exposure for being naked inside his own house a few years ago. Had he been convicted, he would be on the registry.

How exactly would you find out if he was wrongly convicted or not?
