The 5 horsemen, did we find out exactly who all the members were? I know we have the Tuttals and Errol.

What exactly was carcosa? Who were Errol and his lady friend talking about? Reggie Ledoux mentioned the same person. What exactly was that castle complex place?

I think the Pizzolatto mentioned in an interview that the cult became a conspiracy out of necessity and that it just sort of dissolved over the years (some died, some moved on, etc.) Some or most of the culprits will never be caught or brought to justice for their crimes, just like real life. :-(

are people taking this seriously? it seems like a joke answer to me

I'm taking it as gospel until Pizza Man says otherwise.

The season two investigation should centre around finding a killer who pulled up in his truck near some children, got out with no pants on, and eventually kills a young, sexy, 20 something dude who just finished mowing his lawn with his mother witnessing the entire thing.

i hope this time he focuses on something slightly larger scale, to see how he does with less intimate stuff. I love the format though that we can really go anywhere, super exciting.

I certainly didn't think the rest of the show was cliched till the last episode.
Rust's monologues from the very beginning are lifted straight from pulp fiction convention. Marty and Rust's back-and-forth relationship draws on so many previous fiction cop partnerships. Marty cheats on his wife next to statues of an angel and the devil, and he's heavily indebted to recent TV antiheroes like Tony Soprano and Walter White. Cult murders, warring partners, imploding marriages-- these are all such well-trodden vehicles that it's impossible to avoid cliche. Which is why True Detective piled it on. The entire point of the show is that it used cliche to look at stories themselves, not just to tell one.

Even the near death experience itself was a contrivance I found hard to believe. It's one of those typically convenient things television and movies love to do to give people happier endings. So even if I accepted the result was natural (and respecting people's various thoughts on the matter, I still would disagree), I wouldn't accept that it was a well written conclusion because it felt like they were conveniently guiding the pieces in place so he could have that revelation.

Anyway, that's my take on it. Fun first season, glad I watched it. Hope next season has a better final act :)

I can see where you are coming from. I took issue with the whole "Rust's journey" to the end bit with him going into Carcosa. I feel like, the show for the most part, felt pretty grounded. Even the violent parts felt gritty/realistic. But in the end, the writers kind of put theme over logistics. Basically, it had a very "gods hand guiding" feel to it. Rust accepting that this would lead to his "end", so he goes into the depths of the creepy lair. It rubbed me the wrong way. So I definitely see where you are coming from about it feeling like all the pieces were guided into the right place. I really like your post, because it points out what you thought were the failures of the writing (in a bigger scope), and I like to see that perspective. Even shows I love like Breaking Bad, I can sit down and talk about all the things that I definitely think it did wrong (I don't believe in a perfect show. Closest I've seen is the Wire, and even that show has things I find questionable). We might not agree entirely on things, but I do agree with a lot of what you had to say. At the very least, it gives us something to think about (even to those that don't agree with it).

Maybe I'm just a sap, but I ended up buying into the whole Rust resolution in the end, because of how much I liked the character. But I can't deny that, from a technical stand point, it was problematic.

Very intense episode and a satisfying ending to a great series. Can't wait to see what Pizzolatto comes up with for the second season.

Is it too early for a 'True Detective Season 2 Casting Speculation Thread'?
that's pretty much what half of this thread is, lulz

Anyway, I don't think Rust's fundamental core beliefs are any different now than they were pre-coma. There was always a lot of truth in what he had to say. But I think he lost his connection to the rest of humanity with his daughters death. His epiphany/revelation let him regain that connection. He doesn't need to waste his life being a functioning alcoholic waiting to die, its OK to heal and move forward now.

I'm glad he got some redemption and hope for the future. I don't think it was forced, but I could see how others would disagree

Lol, when you paint a house it gets everywhere. It's believable. Also, since when is a little kid a reliable narrator. She also said spaghetti man, but people seem willing to believe that more readily than the green ears part.

Ive painted many houses and rooms and I never ended up with ears painted enough to be called that color. So obvious to someone being chased that it was part of a description. I don't even see how it could happen. Nose, cheeks, hands,... really, anything else would've acceptable. but, frikkin ears. haha... Anyway, I understand the spaghetti face though. His scars made his face look all squiggly.

Would you have changed anything about the finale? I think I would have had Rust die.

I would have them explicitly say that the tape was released and that the police were at least working on rooting out people responsible and that the Tuttles were denying the accusation, but it forever stained their name since all the evidence and tapes went to every agency.

Other than that, nothing.

Am I in the minority by saying the last two episodes have been a lot weaker than the rest of the show? I don't know if I missed something or didn't understand some stuff or just wasn't in the right mood, but the finale felt very bland. Maybe I should rewatch the whole season but the story took a lot of turns for little effect in the end.

Lol, I need to stop defending it so hard. Cuase it seems to imply I think it's flawless and it's not. I was just pointing out it's a minor contention.

And for the record, I've painted many houses, and done a great job, and never had green ears also. Lol

It's still going to be "occult" next season apparently, but this time it's about the "secret history" of the US transportation system. Probably set in southern California.
Whoa that sounds awesome?

Lol, it should be set in Riverside county. My families been there a long tiiime...
By long time I mean we moved there in the 90s

Last episode was blah, but I thought E7 was great.

Haha. As I was typing that last response, I almost stopped typing as I realized the insignificance of the detail within the scope of the show. But, it was dumb... it was dumb...

Oh that duckroll description is accurate about season 2?

Is there a link to the interview/press release that describes this?

Sepinwall interview with Pizzolatto has it.
Can you tell me anything at all about season 2?

Nic Pizzolatto: Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.
He mentioned Southern California in another interview.

The whole Carcosa sequence was beyond creepy and intense, but man......that combination of Rust entering the throne room and hallucinating Carcosa followed by Errol lunging out from the shadows, stabbing him, and "take off your mask".......fuuuuuuuu

Best part of the episode, for sure.

I don't know, I was really excited for it to actually be more of a "conspiracy"/cult situation that is finally discovered. In a way they are, though briefly defined in the hospital to Hart, but all the odd phrases and imagery seemed less important once they got the perp. Still loved it, and I'm satisfied with the ending.

Finished it.
So. Fucking. Good.
Story in itself didn't have much surprises, and wans't anything special, but the entire thing is just perfect.
Those actors... Goddamn.

My thoughts on Carcosa: it has been used as a killing ground for a long time even since the Tuttles. Errol might have added the sticks and sculptures to it over the years toake it a version of his own but it has always been there since the ritual killings started. That's why people from different generations knew about the place and spread the myths along with it. The servant knew, the Leddouxs knew and Charlie knew from second hand accounts. They probably practiced non-fatal rituals there as well as Dora also learned a thing or two about it before she was sacrificed.

Nah I'm with you, the third act of this show was weaker than the first two for me. The first two acts had an air of mystery about what happened to these two guys in 95 and 2002, which made it more interesting than the third act which was mostly just investigating with the characters developed already, until the last 15 mins in hospital.

That part was pretty good, yes.
Especially the hallucination.
I was expecting a more meaningful climax after that, but whatever.

Would you have changed anything about the finale? I think I would have had Rust die.

Having Rust die would have been too easy. He welcomed death. I think forcing him to soldier on is a much more interesting line to take for the character. I honestly can't think of a better conclusion to Rust's arc than what we got. Loved seeing him finally drop his armor and take on the slightest notion of optimism.

I'm glad it ended that way. it would've been cliche and predictable had one of them died, since that always happens in shows/movies like this.

Pretty much this. I am usually good at calling twists and endings and I told my wife that either one or both of them were going to die. I thought I was right up until the very end. When it comes to shows/movies, I like being wrong about what I think is going to happen.

Interesting. I can dig it. I like that this one might be giving women a bigger time in the spotlight. Which means I'm super excited to see which big actresses they nail for the parts :D

I still think he was joking with that synopsis. However, if he isn't, that's a damn cool avenue to explore and certainly one never seen before.

My prediction was that Rust and Marty would die but the two cops who had been interviewing them would arrive in time to kill Errol. It would then be left ambiguous as to whether or not that was the end of the cult.

I much prefer what they did though.

So nobody thinks that what Rust saw in the tunnels was actually the Abyss or that there was something supernatural about Childress?

oh, I suppose that does sort of read like he's joking too. I hope he's not though, like you say, it sounds genuinely interesting.
