Just finished ep 6... and also just learned there will only be 8 eps (according to the OP)... so conflicted... on the one hand, these anthology shows (like American Horror Story) are great opportunities to tell start-to-finish stories in a much longer format than say a film, but on the other hand, man, just when you fall in love with these characters.... they're gone!

Hope we do get a season 2, but it'll be hard to top. Love me some McConaughey!

Pizzolatto alluded in an interview that he may entertain the idea of rust being in a novel iirc. Don't know how serious he was about that though, he basically said its something he would consider.

I marathoned this over the last couple of days. What an amazing show. As someone going through something of an existentialist crisis as of late, pondering the meaning of fatherhood and not wanting to be a cynical intelligent men who ended up talking himself into a lonely and miserable middle age, there's been moments where the show hit a little too close to home, haha.

Interestingly Chris Cooper was in a good cop film called Lone Star (with an appearance by McConaughey!) I would recommend to people who like this show. It's an underrated small texas town/dark secrets kind of thing that strikes a similar nerve. Though nowhere near as moody or cerebral. But still.

Seconding the Lone Star recommendation. Great movie.

Let me first say I have never once seriously considered Marty as any sort of suspect.

Having said that, lets consider the following.

food for thought

I love how rust looks like a preacher with his binder and in the cut scenes of when he and Marty ran into Ledoux Ledoux called rust "a priest too". He is just as fanatic for his God of justice as the cult seems to be for the Yellow King

Shit..... That would hurt. Even though these characters do a lot of shiity things I'm attached to them being partners and solving it.

Yeah, I know...

someone pointed out to me the quote about Marty having gotten a 10 point buck, and with a show that pays attention to detail I figured it could not be a coincidence. Maybe a red herring

basically it wouldn't be a 'twist' as there is some evidence on a rewatch and then everything Marty says to Rust takes on a new meaning. Rust is getting a read on him.. we all think of Marty as the goon who is too stupid to not get caught cheating... but maybe he is getting a read on rust too

still a lot to fill in either way.

I sure a shit hope Marty is not the guy. That would be pretty weak. Although, movie_club's theory is pretty fun to read.

But Marty clearly killed Ledoux because of what he did to the kids. I don't think it had anything to do with the antlers.

Well obviously he did not kill Reggie because he heard Rust ask him about the antlers.

But I have not seen anyone doubt that "Marty killed him because he saw what he did to the kids". Maybe it was "Oh fuck the kids are here let me kill this guy before he talks to Rust".

It is too much of a coincidence to me that a 10 point buck is brought up a few scenes before Rust asks Reggie about the antlers.

Also, this is not a theory that "Marty did it". Just pointing out what seems to be connected, as I have no idea where it leads- if anywhere.

As for:

Seems quite deliberate that there is an entire section of the poster exclusively dedicated to a yellow crown.

Here is Marty speaking directly to the audience detectives on videotape.

"Solution was right under my nose, but I was paying attention to the wrong clues."

We are all suffering from the detectives curse!!

the wait for sunday is killing me. have read every theory. going to drive this one into the ground until its disproved

I think the 10 point buck line was actually improvised. I recall reading an interview with Cary or Nic where they said the hunting banter between Woody and Matt was one of the very few things in the show which weren't exactly scripted the way they were shot.

sure, but they kept it in during editing.

and link if you could find it?

Why would they... edit it out? Fukunaga loves unscripted moments which flow well. I'm not sure what your point is.

because of the connection to the antlers?

Sure it was unscripted, but it was purposefully placed in the episode a few scenes before Rust asks Reggie "why the antlers?"

Antlers are clearly a very important theme that they would not carelessly reference in an episode.

Just look at this screen shot from the episode 7 preview

Marty's hair is also yellow

omg
cmon man

The amount of detail that's gone into the background photos and set dressing to create a real continuity is incredibly impressive here. I hope that's something they are able to maintain with future seasons.

I mean if Marty is the yellow king I would be really surprised. Like why kill ladoux? He should of just killed rust and the kids and moved on with his life worshipping the Yellow King.

Well I personally dont think there is a yellow king. I like the idea that it is more a metaphor, mindset, rotating position whatever.. not trying to insinuate that Marty is the Yellow King.

Not trying to insinuate anything actually, just pointing this stuff out.

For a guy who says you don't subscribe to the theory over and over, you sure like "pointing out" stuff and defending random details. :)

the one thing that made me think marty could be involded somehow is the barbie rape scene (and the drawings) his daughter made.
if this his somehow tied to the cult I cant imagine that martie wouldnt know nothing about this, and that its never mentioned is kinda strange.

That Barbie scene is a massive Chekov's gun. It has to play further part. Why was just one of his daughters so far off the rails but not the other?

Probably will consider it more when his kids start applying to Brown.

As someone who is still two episodes behind, this thread is all sorts of dangerous.

That said, felt this was a good place to share that, while I love McConaughey's portrayal of Rust, Marty is the far more complex, and interesting character.

Love this show, and I'm already prepping to be seriously bummed out when it's all over.

GET. OUT. Episode 5 is incredible and you don't wanna get spoiled.

I wonder how many people are gonna feel cheated when this show ends without any grand "Here's what it all meeeeaaaannns!" reveal filled with dropped jaws and greyscale flashbacks.

Avoid this thread till you catch up. No joke.

I don't understand the poster. :(

Explain?
The top of Marty's hair is cropped off from the top photo and placed at the bottom of the poster for some reason.

Yellow hair. Yellow king. Time is a flat circle, snake eats its own tail, join us in the mouth of madness.

Marty being involved somehow seems a bit cheap after we see his reaction when finding the two kids since there is no one around he would need to put on a show for. Unless he is only into killing young prostitutes and knew nothing of the kids or something.

You mean that's the original poster and it was not shop'd? I assumed that the hbo logo was originally at the top but if not.. very interesting.

I like the how he's referred to as a priest and can seemingly get a confession out of anyone.

I would imagine that some form of assumption would be subverted (hinted at by the inability to spot what's under your nose, the danger of making assumptions and fitting the narrative to that [coincidentally I like the idea that there's nothing satanic about it, but it's instead a human-trafficking ring, as unlikely as it seems, simply because that was something we had somewhat assumed from the beginning], and the implication that 85% of everything is given in the pilot and we've only been filling out gaps since) but I could certainly see a more mundane explanation (such as it being the lawnmower man which I certainly wouldn't impose). and I very much hope nobody feels cheated without some grand shocking reveal, which the show, I feel, has never really suggested.

Marty is definitely involved. He is not the killer but he has ties to the cult..

I definitely would not expect any flashbacks in a show like True Detective.
