PlayStation Network Thread (Vita/PS3/PS4/PSP) | February 2014

Haha yeah.

I'm changing plans myself. I'll probably stop buying day 1 for a while until I've finished my games first. Who knows by the time I buy it there might be a sale. Toukiden was an exception since online multi is emphasized. Helps my wallet too.

backlog is a bitch.

thinking whether to buy Ys Celceta Digital now.
hmm. I don't really need a super sale. just those spend $50 get $10 back promos would be awesome!

hmm. I also want to support those publishers who localise all these fantastic Japanese games.

it is disappointing that the HD Collection ports of Sony IPs are such a mess :/

I know, right? And Toukiden isn't helping any. That game is sucking up all my free time while my backlog continues to grow larger.
And I really wanna play Danganronpa, but I know I won't get to it for a while. I wish there were more hours in a day.

Some more screenshots and detail on Oreshika 2 at Silconera here.

Please bring it to the west.

No hyperbole but yeah, just 9. It just got big because of the 14 for 14 sale in PSN.
10 if I include Ethan. Thanks for that, man!

That's a mighty small backlog if you're talking all encompassing.
I think I have more than 9 games on Vita alone that I need to play/finish/plaintum... not to mention the horror story that's my backlog on PS3 and PC. :lol

Good luck.
And if you mean that you won Ethan Meteor Hunter from my SteamGAF modbot raffle, you're welcome. :)

This week I've bought TxK and now Olli Olli. What games am I missing that have been released this year? I didn't know anything about Olli until I bought it except a few mentions on GAF about how good it is.

Read up on Monster Monpiece, the gameplay sounds interesting and I like card battle games.

I'm wondering what the price will be though. And I guess there won't be an OT after the last few discussion threads.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation about the censorship though. The cards weren't removed the images for later evolutions of some of the monster girls were just replaced with the image from the earlier ones so that they don't change when they evolve.

I'm not trying to derail this thread or start a discussion on censorship I just thought since I just learned about this maybe some other people didn't know either and that they should know what to expect if they're considering buying the game tomorrow.

Has Olli Olli gotten a patch yet? I want to try it but after it crashed the last time I tried to play it I'm waiting for a patch before I try again. If I spent a bunch of time with it and was in the middle of a really good run and it crashed I would be upset.

If I include Steam + Origin + Desura I would easily top 50. The bundles are slowly killing me and my budget for my Vita. But since we are talking about getting a platinum it would only go around 20. PS+ does not help, adding new games to the backlog every month. I am only interested in getting a platinum for 9 of my games so it is quite small.

Everybody's favorite Toukiden is one. It maybe is the reason some vitabros are not active in this thread because of that. Danganronpa is another favorite, although it is a visual novel style game. If you are not allergic to anime games, Dragonball is also out. And it seems pretty good.

Probably full price 40usd? I am willing to buy that game despite the censorship. I have waited a long time for that game to get localized then I will just throw a hissy fit because some almost nude cards got shafted? No way. I rather get that than none at all.

so what's monster monpiece? is it more of a waifu / hentai thing or is it a real game and that other stuff is just there for the sake of it?

I've finally subscribed to PS Plus, and while attempting to download Gravity Daze and Uncharted overnight to my Vita, I'm having a few problems getting it to download in sleep mode.

I've toggled the 'wireless in power saving mode' switch on, I have a 90% signal strength, and I just left it to go to sleep on its own rather than switching it to sleep mode. It is set to go to sleep after three minutes.

The download queue is fine and starts working again immediately when I woke up the system this morning.

At the moment I've left it with a rather inelegant solution of having a slide show running while I'm at work- that seems to do the job, but if any more technically competent gaffer other than a dinosaur like myself has any ideas on how to get sleep mode downloads working, if be grateful.

I don't think it's the router, and have gone through all the options on the machine but can't seem to spot a plausible solution.

the sleep mode problem has been bothering many of us

I think I still have to plat 9 games for the vita. If FFX and X-2 comes with MonMon (maybe) this month, I might not buy a new vita game for a good 6 months. Djmax and PDf plats will kill my time for new games.

Ohh, we're talking about empty wallets and backlog huh.

So let's see: Xillia, Ys Celcetta, Toukiden, and Bravely Default. And I just added to my PSN wallet so that it reached 60 bucks since I figured I should buy Danganronpa but I hesitated somewhat since the sequel is announced and it may have a discount later on (that, and I am still struggling between it vs. Tales of Graces F). Hmm, that's a lot of money spent on games....

As for backlog... in Vita alone:

-Played for a while but haven't given enough time: DJ Max Technika Tune, DOA5 Plus, Muramasa Rebirth, NFS Most Wanted, Sonic Transformed, Tearaway, Wipeout 2048, Ys Celcetta, Gravity Rush, Hotline Miami, Super Stardust Delta, Corpse Party, Breath of Fire IV.

-Haven't even touched/played very little: Smart As, Soul Sacrifice, The Walking Dead, Touch My Katamari, Uncharted GA, AC Liberation, Disgaea 3, Killzone Mercenary, Dokuro, Flower, Guacamelee, Knytt Underground, Limbo, Machinarium, Malicious Rebirth, Mutant Blobs Attack, Pinball Arcade, Sine Mora, Spelunky, Stranger's Wrath HD, Thomas Was Alone, Urban Trial Freestyle, Zen Pinball 2, Corpse Party Book of Shadows, Gods Eater Burst, Growlanser Wayfarer of Time, GTA: Liberty City Stories, Metal Slug XX, Worms: Battle Island, Harvest Moon Back to Nature.

Played extensively but haven't finished: Toukiden.

The *only* game truly and well finished: Persona 4 Golden.

The bolded ones are the games courtesy of PS+. The rest were bought.

And this is just Vita. Counting 3DS, I have numerous games I haven't even finished and/or barely touched such as Bravely Default, Rune 4 Factory, Super Mario 3D Land, Etrian Odyssey IV, Ace Combat, Soul Hacker, etc etc etc etc.

...Oh my.

Weird, I just keep my Vita charged overnight with the Wi-Fi on so that it will automatically synch and download updates. No problems encountered. All I did before was to restore it to default once since I encountered the disappearing bubble problem before.

Question for the Vita owners: Is PS+ worth it if you're only interested on indies?

I finally picked up a Vita, and have instantly made it my portable Spelunky/Hotline Miami machine. I've also picked up OlliOlli, Lone Survivor, Thomas Was Alone and Proteus.

I keep hovering over the PS+ subscription button, but...I don't really have much interest in anything outside of indie games right now. I appreciate the fact that the Vita can do these (for want of a better term) big budget titles like Uncharted and Gravity Days, but it's not why I bought the system, and I can't imagine playing them any time soon.

So...is it worth it? Has there been much of a showing for indie titles on PS+ in the past?

Maybe? If you are only interested at indies then PS+ will help you save money. PS+ generally gives discounts at launch for indie games as a promotion. An added benefit for PS+ users is the option to have their save games upload to the cloud (LOL). So if your vita got stoled or destroyed, you can pick it up again when you have a new vita.

Hotline Miami was given as a freebie in the US PSN before. Pixeljunk Monsters was given to the Asia PSN also. Maybe later they will also give other indies as a free game later.

The latter.

I don't usually like Kotaku but this is a good read.

Those impressions make it look like a game I could like... if the card mechanics and that stuff works well enough. Before, I thought it was a waifu rubbing simulator with some mediocre TCG mechanics thrown here and there.

I finished Danganronpa today. 25 hours. So good. It filled the void that P4G left in me for at least that small period of time. I'm so excited for the sequel now, I just have to be careful about what websites I go on since apparently spoilers are everywhere.

The school mode (no murders) they added is a different story or more of the same?

They've given out a handful of indie titles, both for EU and US (not sure where you're located).

Off the top of my head, think they have given away Hotline Miami, Sine Mora, Machinarium, Mutant Blobs Attack, Knytt Underground in the US... you're bound to also get discounts since the indie titles always seem to get a little off in their initial week.

I feel the same, but the art is a bit too much for me altough I like anime and can handle a bit of waifu stuff.

For me, I'll be throwing shame out the window and picking this up. Who needs it anyway?

Different mode. It's main use is to watch some special ending videos with each character and max their "social link"I guess you would call it. There's more to it than that (which surprised me) but I wouldn't want to spoil it.

Yep. I like anime too (not as much as 2-3 years ago but still...) so I can stand some of the waifu / ecchi things quite some Japanese games have nowadays. I may bite in the future, but it won't be full price. If there is a nice enough PSN sale...

For me, I'll be throwing shame out the window and picking this up. Who needs it anyway?

Bought it digitally. Less awkwardness and less shame than going to GameStop. Amazon could be an option too xD

whats a good combo of small games for 10 bucks?

I think you should give it a try - most of "big" Vita games are something in beetween indy title and AAA releases

I think it's worth it. I know you are only interested in indies but PS+ provides discounts on many titles and gives you the option to be able to play games (that you won't play or try unless free)

and just be sure to checkout all the free titles.. so you have a library of them to try at your convenience.. (as long as your PS+ is active)

I wish there's more promotions on PSN credit :/ all these Day One purchases for Vita.
No stahp. My wallet would probably off himself if that was the case.

Now this is hard. Currently PS all stars is on sale for 10 bucks and you will get Vita/PS3 version.

Maybe Dokuro (if still priced at 3$), Floating God saves the pilgrims (3.49$), plus the on sale divekick (2.49$). Or replace dokuro with draw slasher (ps+ 2.75$).

I'm waiting for those SHMUPS to go on Sale :/

PSA: Tomb Raider PS4/XB1 is Amazons GoldBox Deal of the Day @ $40 today.

I can't make threads so I guess here is as good as anywhere. Enjoy.

aw fuck it i will buy eDF :(

There's been a few, currently I'm loving Guacamelee on the EU PS+ downloads.

To be honest, I would never subscribe to anything on the hopes of what might turn up- I'd wait until there's something you want, where you are instantly going to save, say, half the subscription fee in what you would have spent anyway. On top of that, you usually get about 70p or a dollar or whatever off on lots of the indies, so it'll work out to be worth it over time. The sooner you start to subscribe, the bigger the backlog of stuff you've got access to builds up, but as you say, there's no point subscribing to build up a backlog of stuff you aren't interested in.

All in all, I'd wait until you can instantly save £20 or something like that and then move forward in confidence. That's what I did, and I'm very happy with the service, it's been great value for me this month as I was going to pick up Uncharted, Guacamelee and Dynasty Warriors anyway. If something comes up on PS+ that you aren't sure about, you could always use your free trial to check it out without committing to anything if you are particularly cagey.

Is Stick it to the man (Vita) a good game? Thinking of buying it.

It's pretty solid. It's entertaining and funny, but the gameplay definitely leaves a lot to be desired. I recommend it as the game is for the most part pretty enjoyable thanks to the entertaining dialogue and cool art style, but just don't go in expecting particularly good gameplay.

Maybe Im over reading things thanks to a comment on the link I'm providing but is InFamous Vita going to be announced this year? First off, this look like Delsin is playing a PS Vita. And then I remembered that slip up by Nate(Second Son) regarding a vita InFamous version, seen here and having followed most of the latest InFamous Second Son screens, the place and his position in the Official PS4 Sharing Commercial seems new.

I could be wrong and this is just a snippet from a remote play vita ad for InFamous SS :I

Beside my possible nutty ramblings, here's some gameplay of Murasaki Baby, in case you all forgot bout this very interesting vita exclusive.

Gunslugs is $1.99 PS+, $2.49 regular price, yup.

3D games are weird, because often times the better looking the 3D, the more generic it's art style, or simpler it's gameplay. I feel the same kind of "give and take" with "Total Recoil" and (other games you posted, I forget it's name!), in that they put one element forward, and another is more plain than I'd like.

3D gets cheaper (less expensive software, better quality free tools and assets), but as there are less and less 2D sprite artist out there than there were for the 2D focused eras, they seem to have become a premium due to scarcity.

Tribute Games and Zeboyd are the few I can think of that are small, yet consistently make games with better and better sprite work in each release. KOTANI on Yatagarasu actually worked on KoF, and even his small team seems like they were only able to make awesome character sprites, and had to skimp on the backgrounds, even with something like 4 / 6 years of dev on the game.

At least Orange Pixel's next game "Heroes of Loot" (which is also coming to Vita, apparently) looks better than Gunslugs, and like they finally started to get more of a "style" to the in game art, even if it is still mostly simple. I think it can stand out on it's own, and goes past "bad programmer art" to being "competent, appealing, simple art".

When 2D was the norm, increased-quality graphics were demanded to stand out. Engines and gameplay were largely set, so they had to iterate artistically.

But now, just being 2D makes you stand out enough, and most smaller devs seem less interested in the art, and much more interested in getting a game out, and making an income, so they can try and make game development into their main moneymaker.

I wish we saw more 2D indies work like the "Arkedo" series, where they made games with appealing, well-realized styles, that were fairly simple, in a few weeks time, while still working on bigger, more ambitious titles. But considering how things turned out for them after Hell Yeah!....
Many indies seem to not understand that there's no rule about dimension of sprites, if you are not able to do big sprites then do small sprites, just make the game with a decent res or even better native res.
Look at terraria for example, its single elements(characters, map squares etc) are small, but developers were smart enough to make it native res, the many elements on screen and the light effects make it look good.
I don't know the resolution of Heroes of Loot but it has more moving elements on screen and there are some light effect that make it look better than Gunslugs.
Risk of Rain has smaller sprites size than Gunslugs(main character for ROR is 11 pixel tall, GS 15), but it looks a lot better and definitely not as cheap.

Could new versions of those games be made and released for $2.
There are many high/native res indies that don't cost a lot more, but the problem is not the graphics alone though, even the gameplay seems to be very limited.

2 is definitely true for every fighting game. 4 is also true, although your reasoning is a little off - it's not specifically combos, but the difficulty of learning a character to its fullest extent, that makes people specialize. Combo execution is only part of that, and it doesn't present the same barrier to everyone - to players who are already "good" (for lack of a better word) at execution, degree of difficulty the character's executional requirements is unlikely to be a reason for not playing him/her/it.

I don't know what you mean by "spam" in 1. If you mean the initial hit it takes to confirm into a combo, then you should possibly find better players to play against. Combos do indeed do more damage than normal hits, although I'm not sure why you think that's bad.

3 is subjective. I think BlazBlue's combos are weird as hell to do, while SF4's combos are understandable and MvC3's are easy. They're only weird when you don't know how to do them, after all.

About 4 you can't deny that a character that has lots of long combos is harder to learn than one without them right?

About 1 i think it's bad because a thing about fighting games that i really liked was to search for each single opening to take advantage of for a single hit or few more, they had some strategy and tension involved, certain matches could have been "long"(by fighting game standards), with combo-centric games 4 or 5 openings are enough to end a match using combos, it's not the same.

Again look at those videos i already posted
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdieEUZ0-0I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxrtU9IrQxQ

They are both from tournament finals, so i guess players are good enough right?
In the Street Fighter 2 one you can see Guile using the Sonic Boom to get an opening and Mr. Bison being prudent just jumping to avoid it and other search for opening and prudence situations, in the Blazblue one instead players just spam combos hoping to hit, even if the the opponent is using a guard the combo continues so even if the player doesn't hit he is relatively safe and he can even stop the combo if the character risks to open.
In combo-centric games the strategy component seems to less important while the luck has a bigger influence imo.
