In line with this the whole exit from the 2012 interrogation scenes (Marty's and especially Cohle's) was so stellar. They nailed the sense that this show is soon to be about much more than the past which is hiding so much from even the best detectives on the force. The final act of this show could be some insane shit depending on how the case proceeds from here.

How Cohle walked away from the interrogation just screamed badass to me.

What if the cult is killing people but the killer Cohle and Hart are tracking down is killing cult members?

I don't normally rewatch shows till months after ive seen them, but I think I'e watched every episode 3 times. Except for last nights.

you'd think the detectives would know that

They probably do, but they probably don't realize that's Cohle's goal. They may think they could talk to him and he could start leading them in directions where they could get hard evidence against him, whether what was said in the room was admissible or not. They probably don't realize that he is playing them, since he knows exactly what he is doing - and he wanted to get a peak into their case file

Rewatching those clips, Ledoux saying "he sees you" is so damned creepy.

In another dimension, True Detective would splinter here and be all about Lovecraft-esque exploration of other dimensions here on Earth and all the horrors that they bring. Nyarlathotep recruiting followers/cultists to be servants for ancient gods and shit. And the fanboy inside me would cream his pants.

But I'm totally okay with the show staying rooted/not supernatural...just saying.

EDIT: I would absolutely love for Kevin McKidd to get work on a high-profile show like this.

Maybe they also figured that he'd be more willing to allow access to his storage locker if he was comfortable and liquored up.

It was really out of character for Rust to beat the shit out of that guy talking about the yellow king. He's usually doesn't lose his cool. I'm wondering if he didn't want him to talk because he wouldn't be able to control the info getting back to whoever is in involved in the cover-up.
Its totally inline with his character actually. Remember why he was given the ultimatum of going to jail or under cover for the DEA? This same man believes he got his guy years ago and some tweaker is holding info hostage and tells him he failed to get his guy and there have since been more deaths(thats on rust). Shiiiiet, the guy slaps his own co-worker for coming at him the wrong way. Rusts pimp hand is way strong.

Watching those "behind the episode" vids makes some of the fan speculation come off as irrational. There seems to be this sense that the show is going to take some dark/fantasy turn when in reality its been pretty damn grounded from the start. There have been allusions and references to more fantastical elements obviously, but I don't think they're going to totally change the face of the show towards the end. Like Pizzolatto said, they aren't trying to trick anybody.

Fans can't help but want a spiritual successor to Twin Peaks. I actually feel this and some other shows like The Killing do this on purpose, give it that creepy TP vibe but ground it in reality. If that is their intention, i'm completely okay with that!

There seems to be part of Ledoux's nonsense sprouting which didn't make the final cut in the episode?

In the HBO "Inside the episode: The Yellow King" video, you see a version of the scene where he goes "I saw you in my dream. You're a priest too. I know what happens next. You're in Carcosa now."

In the actual episode he goes "I know what happens next. I saw you in my dream. You're in Carcosa now. With me. He sees you."

They could have just changed it a bit to make it a little more subtle, but I wonder if there's something more there.

Just finished watching the fifth episode, haven't been this amazed by a TV show for quite some time. The acting, the directing, the music... just wow.

I like the aired one better. It sounds creepier.

Wow, there's so many references and hidden gems in this series that it's crazy. What an absolute masterpiece.

I've been researching the episodes thoroughly and I hope to share some of it once I compile it all. All I can say for now is that things are way crazier than what it seems.

Honestly though, I feel like this will be an amazing series to rewatch once we see the whole story.

Obviously I have no idea whats going happen in the last three hours, but we seem to be past all the mystery and unknown. Which I'm glad about, we finally have a clear grasp on what the story actually is. Episode 5 finally put all the pieces together. I'm curious to see which way it goes, this episode was almost all exposition. It feels like we can finally get some work done solving this thing. In a weird way I'm gonna be disappointed if they solve it. It feels too tidy. I could see something happening where maybe Rust solves it for himself but never is able to prosecute/alert real authorities.. depending on how big the conspiracy/coverup is.

Maybe he and Hart just go and kills the cult members.

Vigilante-style, motherfucker. Hart and Cohle.

We ride together, we die together. Bad boys for life.

I was pretty surprised about the way that whole shootout went down, to be honest. It makes so much more sense though. Watching a a nonlinear show like this fuckin' sucks waiting a week in between episodes. If you re-edited this show together in chronological order it would be the most boring thing imaginable.

Cutting a bit close to the finale.

I thought that by now, Dora Lange was resolved and we'll be hot on the new murders 2012 detectives are trying to solve. But now I have no idea what the creators have in store. I don't think we can start and resolve 2012 murders in 3 episodes through the eyes of Marty and Rust. It has to be either: Marty and Rust are already deep undercover trying to solve the new cases and just need a big break, or Rust/Marty is the Yellow King (less likely) that comes across as a shyamalantwist.jpg in the season finale.

Yo, whats wrong with the oldest daughter?

They are leaning too much on family problems and Audrey for it to be just 'family problems'

The detectives curse.

Also remember when the girls were playing with the dolls. The doll was naked and surrounded by a bunch of male dolls.

Alright, I've put off getting involved with the show because I didn't know what to expect. I am now fully caught up and can say I thoroughly like what I have seen. It's not the greatest show ever nor the greatest detective series I've seen (so far) but it is pretty darn good. I will definitely keep watching to see how this all turns out I just hope it doesn't end with some dumb twist or some massive conspiracy, that shit has been done to death. I want something believable and that makes sense, in that I can go back and rewatch the whole series and "see the answer staring right in front of my face."

Yeah if it goes in some cliche direction I'm gonna be disappointed.

Oh man, what an incredible episode. Don't really know what specific thing to harp on. It was all amazing. Fuck I love this show.

I think that's what most of us are hoping for.

Where we can go to previous episodes and see the answer right there.

Buzzfeed interview with Pizzolatto said:
Did you know from the beginning how Season One would end?

I knew what the last scene was. I wasn’t entirely sure how we were going to get ourselves there, but I knew what it was. And if the last scene had to change because the characters revealed something to me, then it would change. But actually the last scene is the last scene that was always intended to be.

I’ve enjoyed reading people theorize about what’s going to happen because it’s a sign that you’re connecting. But I’m also sort of surprised by how far afield they’re getting. Like, why do you think we’re tricking you? It’s because you’ve been abused as an audience for more than 20 years. The show’s not trying to outsmart you. And really if you pay attention… if someone watches the first episode and really listens, it tells you 85 percent of the story of the first six episodes.
