Olympia Rising | Explore, chain-jump through Hades, on KS life support, GAFfer-made

As for trying KS again, has this been a successful thing in the past with other devs? We haven't really discussed this idea. We figured that if we couldn't generate enough interest with all of the content we had now during this campaign, a second campaign would have similar results.

Yeah, its probably also best to mention it in the KS updates once the KS failed that there is the possibility of you reopening the KS eventually, and if you want to stay informed about any sort of progress, follow us here:
<include mailing list link>

That way you keep some of your current backers if you decide to go at it again.

Edit: Bah, sucky negative first post on the new page.

GOGO GUYS, I HOPE YOU CAN DO IT.
(Someone post a gif please)

Haha, no worries! We'll make sure to follow up with something like that if the KS isn't successfully funded.

THE PARTY HAS ONLY JUST BEGUN!

I feel rather stupid that I didnt notice before that you are our IndieGames.com spy. :p Is that the only website you are writing for?

lol I haven't even been hiding it. I often say I'm posting things to the site. I also give you guys credit regularly :P

I'm also at Armless Octopus occasionally and used to post at Extra Guy.

Yeah, I literally JUST got that. Oh well :p

Very few gaming projects clear 30% and fail at the end. I think you guys have a good shot.

But it would still be great to get a blurb in Rock Paper Shotgun or something.

After Neverending Nightmares turnaround in its final days and Windforge's skin-of-its-teeth success, I remain optimistic

There are all great ideas that we'll be addressing in a future builds. Controller support is the biggest thing on our minds of these suggestions. We're building the game in Impact, an HTML5 engine. There hasn't been native controller support until just recently. I don't know if you guys are familiar with Elliot Quest (had a successful KS campaign recently, also being built with Impact) but he's been working with other Impact devs and just made a breakthrough, so we're going to be exploring that soon. Not sure if we'll have it up before the KS ends, though.

There are currently no sound effects. Joe Jeremiah is doing the music and sound design, but we're waiting till after the KS is funded to have him create SFX. I've been eager to hear/see how the game will feel when after they're implemented. SFX bring a lot to a game, especially a retro-looking platformer like OR.

Many of the updates you suggested wouldn't be too difficult to implement, but currently our programmer is up to his neck in work for his other job and we don't have the time to make these changes right now. It would be something we'd implement in the coming weeks after we reach our funding goal - releasing a new build to our backers who've pledged enough for Beta access.

I appreciate you responding. I did notice the pedestals had a small down arrow marked into them upon replay, I must've overlooked it. I will also mention that on early playthroughs, I had a slightly difficult time determining which vases and pottery were breakable or not (until I learned it was that one singular type). I'm not sure whether the answer would be to make the breakables stand out more, or maybe make some more of the level details break, perhaps for a fraction of magic energy back. Or maybe I was the only one with that initial trouble. (Maybe too much God of War training me to smash everything.)

I did replay it again, this time using Joy2Key, and had a lot more fun with it. I usually don't do much with Beta access on Kickstarters, but I've kicked in on the $30 level. Looks like you're almost at $6,000, hope you make it!

alright, so I finally got back to a computer after several days with only my phone, how's this campaign doing?

*looks at KS page*

daaaamn! still a ways to go... the only good part is I get to push this baby past the $6K mark with my donation.

hope it helps!

double posting to get this thread some more attention, and also the attention of the OP:

maybe it would help if the thread title was changed to something a bit more optimistic. Instead of "KS Life Support" how about:

Olympia Rising | GAFfer made indie game: $4K to go on KS! LETS DO THIS GAF!!

$6,030 pledged of $10,000 goal

It picked up from a few days ago, but man. *summons powers of goodwill*

Seeing a spike in pledges is pretty awesome! Hopefully this keeps up. Also, I think that thread title is a good idea too.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the project/posted in this thread! Things are still looking kind of grim, though. We're currently working on some ideas for extra rewards added to the lower tiers.

On the bright side, I was contacted by someone to create assets for a "Flappy Bird" clone... lol. Will probably pass.

I cant express my feelings about this sentence in a single smilie.

You're looking past the opportunity here! Kickstarter bonus: Flappy Iola! Use the power of Aer to navigate Hades' plumbing!

I am totally kidding, if that wasn't clear.

Okay, working on a prototype for "Flappy Iola" right now. If this doesn't bring us some publicity, then nothing will.

News up
Kickstarter is filled with many campaigns that hit their goal within a matter of hours. Sadly, not all are that lucky, and many missing their goals. That's a fate that may happen to the currently running campaign for Olympia Rising.

Before I talk about this game, I must say more than anything I’m disappointed in myself for missing the game out in my February Kickstarter Picks Article. For reasons I’m unsure about myself I forgot about this interesting game when writing the article. Olympia Rising is a 2-D action/adventure game set in Hades. Your goal is to escape as you go upwards through the different levels of the underworld. In the game you will use your jumping, sword and magic to rise up. At the end of each level is Charon, the Ferryman, who you must pay with treasure found throughout the level to advance.

Currently Olympia Rising is sitting a little above $6,000 out of its $10,000 goal. There are only four more days left before the campaign ends. Though it has picked up some momentum over the last two days it’s still very much in need of a last minute burst of support. Olympia Rising is set to come out on PC, Mac and Linux should it achieve its funding goal.

2 things yes I used the original name from here since it just worked for the idea, and that kickstarter imagethingy I made, it's not stolen. Hopefully it helps in some way somehow with your Kickstarter Soup.

You should totally post that in an update :P

"In an attempt to gather last minute support, we decided to do what everyone is doing to get money these days and created Flappy Lola."

Just kidding of course, but haha, that gif is priceless.

Backed after reading all the positive feedback here. For $5 how could I not?

...

This is why I have so many unplayed games on Steam, isn't it D:

Lol, we might include a joke along those lines in the next update (which should be going up today).

EDIT: Here's a bonus concept painting I just finished of Karkinos, the legendary ancient Greek crab monstrosity that Hercules punted into the sky. Though in OR, he'd serve as a boss encounter in the second region.

You tried really hard not so say "GIANT ENEMY CRAB", didnt you. :p

He looks like a blood-thirsty Nipper. You know, the crab from Banjo Kazooie?

I feel sad for this project; doesnt look like it will make it without a media push. It kinda reminds me of shantae.

Doesnt mean its completely dead though. We'll be waiting in the shadows until the project resurfaces (if it fails).

Just bumped up my $10 pledge to $30 good luck guys hope you fund this the demo was really fun.

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed the demo!

Pretty cool art, Pasta_Soup. Any chance you want to remake the game with high-res graphics and that art style? ;)

As awesome as that would be, we're sticking to pixel art for Olympia Rising, lol. There's still a lot we want to explore with the pixel art medium (even if is a bit overdone these days within the indie scene). I'm personally trying to put a lot of work into the animation so it stands out from the other thousand pixel games - though with titles like Witchmarsh, Crawl, Frog Sord, etc, we've got a lot of friendly competition.

But I've started work on a personal game project that's going to utilize high-res art and I'm pretty excited about that!

Two of the tiers were revised: the $10 one is receiving some extra rewards now, and the $5 has an extra reward for tweeting about the KS:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paleozoic/olympia-rising/posts/745068

Hey everyone,

We've decided to add some rewards to our $10 tier as an incentive to pledge or upgrade from a previous pledge. So here's what we've got:

$10 Tier Revision:

-A high resolution, Olympia Rising wallpaper featuring Iola gazing upon Mount Olympus in all her Ancient Greek aesthetic glory.

-A set of finely pixeled exclusive Kickstarter icons featuring everyone's favorite OR characters.

-In addition to your name in the credits, your name will be engraved upon the Underworldy Hero's Monument found in the secret garden of the Asphodel Fields to be explored in the final game.

-And of course, you will still receive the game and the soundtrack as well.

If you're interested in upgrading your pledge to receive these new rewards, you can click the "Manage Your Pledge" button on the right side of the Olympia Rising Kickstarter page. Just enter your new pledge amount ($10 minimum for these new rewards) and you're good to go!

New Special $5 Tier Added

This new $5 tier is a bit different. By pledging $5 and then tweeting about Olympia Rising, you will receive a copy of the game upon release and 1 of 3 exclusive pixel icons not available through any other reward. We decided to add this as a small incentive to get people to spread the word! If you've already pledged $5, simply go to the "Manage Your Pledge" page and switch your reward. Follow up with a tweet sharing the Kickstarter and you're set!

Thanks everyone! More to come!

Best day yet! $739 up to now, and still some hours left.

Yeah, I think the animations are definitely looking quite good.

Sounds cool, looking forward to it.

I actually enjoy the artsyle of this one image more then the art-style you currently use in-game. There is nothing wrong what you have now (its great and wonderful too), however the art-style in the above image more unique and way more interesting. It screams "Greece", It screams "mythology". Its "magic".

Making the player pay for the ride at the end of the level every time might put people off. Especially if you don't have enough coins. Might be a good idea to twist this up.

I feel there's a disconnect between the music and the stages. It doesn't really suit the setting/environment, detracts from it. However I know the demo is work in progress, and the soundtracks haven't been probably done yet.

I'm looking forward to this, I enjoy games that are based on ancient Greek mythology.

Apotheon just did that style not long ago, though:

I think I prefer the more colorful look the other development art represents, even though the image above works as "box art".

Not too derail the thread, but have you seen Apotheon? If you like that style, you should check that game out as well
