CVG Rumor: Nintendo looking to change the name of the Wii U?

Thanks to crimsonheadGCN and Penguin for the heads-up.

Sources close to Nintendo are saying that they are thinking about renaming the WiiU before it's launch.

CVG understands that following a disappointing E3 reveal - and public confusion over 3DS - serious discussions are ongoing at the highest level in the US and Japan as to whether the firm should cut its losses and give the console a different name.

Discuss!

I locked the first thread because I felt it was kind of a non-thing; this rumour doesn't even say anything. Maybe it's true, maybe it's not. It's possible that it's not true but Nintendo will change the name anyway. It's possible that it is true but they decide not to change the name in the end. I was going to reply suggesting that since the rumour was such a non-thing, it might be better to discuss it in the catch-all garbage Wii U speculation thread.

A few other mods contacted me afterwards to suggest there might have been some good conversation, and I hadn't made a final decision about replying with that advise or unlocking the thread.

Sorry for the confusion here, total mea culpa.

unlock and merge!

I doubt they will change it, and honestly, I don't really want them to at this point. The name has stuck.

I can imagine E3 being like:
Reggie: "Last time, we showed you Wii U. Well geuss what, its about to get a whole lot better"
*drumroll*
Reggie: "Here is, Wii 2"

I like the idea of Wii 2 as in "We to"

In all seriousness I think Nintendo has a history of codenames being better than final (selective examples here to prove false point):
Dolphin > GameCube
Nitro > DS
Revolution > Wii

I think this would be a good move.

As dumb as the Wii name was at the time it obviously ended up doing great in the end. But Wii U just brought a lot of confusion to the table. Better just call it the Wii 2, or something completely new, to drum it into people's heads that this is a completely new and different product (other than getting to use legacy controllers, backwards compatibility etc.)

Needs to happen. Just call it the Wii 2 if nothing else.. but you need to smack the public over the head with the fact something is a successor and not a revision.
