You might remember this thread, featuring a vast selection of mobile games across various genres. However, the sheer amount of games meant it was impossible to add new games to the genre categories, effectively making the whole idea of "games categorized by genre" useless

From the stellar ports to the dozens of exclusive titles, mobile is thriving platform and this thread is meant to highlight the best that the platform has to offer. Great OP. I've been playing Downwell a lot lately.

Also, Sage Solitaire is a really good game. It seems like it would just be another card game, but it actually has smart mechanics with a ton of depth. People compare it to Threes. It's a great way to get people familiar with cards into gaming. The basic version is free. One player.

Awesome list! Never heard of lots of interesting sounding titles, discovering new games is weirdly hard on the iOS store.

I'm struggling to get into iOS gaming; I don't want to spend money on something I don't play, and I don't know what to spend money on (I hate IAP). This is a great thread. Well done OP!

Hope it helps

And also the monthly threads. The OTs of those feature impressions, recommendations, and a list of upcoming releases for each month

All I really played this year was Downwell, Lara Croft GO and Sorcery.

I wish it was easier to figure out what games are worth my time. This is a nice visual guide, but it's still pretty hard to parse through.

Have you checked out the monthly threads? Most of these games (and any major releases in general) have impressions from posters.

Personally I always trust GAF first, because the regulars there prefer paid games and aren't going to sugarcoat if a freemium model sucks or whatnot

Have you played 80 Days? If you liked Sorcery, you'll probably like that. It got a huge update this year, 100,000+ words of new content

I subscribe to the threads and try to read through them when I have time.

I guess I'm just generally lamenting the lack of reviews and coverage of mobile games. Using forum post impressions are alright, but I don't like that it seems to be my only way of getting decent information, updates and impressions of titles.

Thanks for the suggestion though, already played 80 Days last year and played it when it updated again.

What are the best "beat in one sitting" sub 2 hour iOS games? I've been trying to find short 1-2 hour games and it's pretty tough on consoles or PC these days. iOS seems to have more of them because of the price tag. Wish someone made a website called "short games for people without much gaming time" that compiled all the good games for any system that are beatable from start to finish in under a couple of hours.

Boy, do I have a podcast for you
Aptly titled The Short Game. It exclusively covers exactly the kinds of games you want

As for shorter IOS games, you'll want to check out more of the adventure/interactive fiction/narrative-focused stuff. The Sorcery series and 80 Days are good for short playthroughs, but also provide a lot of replayability. To Be Or Not To Be as well. A Good Snowman, Prune, Pry

Older games you could check out: Framed, Kiwanuka, Space Expedition

I'll look through my purchased list

I deleted this game after a few days. Sorry kitties but your game is dull.

Love this recap OP. Great to know what's happening in the scene as I'm one of those people who only dabbles with more meaty mobile offerings (I don't really enjoy playing them on cell phones too much and stick to the simpler time wasters. And sometimes it's a control issue). Are all the games being shown off here for iPhone and iPad or do we have to find that out for ourselves?

And sometimes it's a control issue). Are all the games being shown off here for iPhone and iPad or do we have to find that out for ourselves?
Off the top of my head, the only ones that are iPad only are Dropsy, The Whispered World, Desktop Dungeons, Door Kickers, and Dungeon of the Endless

Basically if it's a port, a good chance it might be iPad only

The rest are mostly universal, although I think there are few that might only be on iPhone

Great thread!

I'm just a bit disappointed in this years releases if these are it. The only one I didn't know where out for iPhone is Rollercoaster Tycoon 3.

How do I buy from the Japanese store?

Fantastic job OP.

I'm spending a lot of time in mobile games, especially on iPad but I will probably never get used to touch controls in fast paced games. Weird fingers I guess.

Still, it's amazing to see how this market grows and I'm really excited for its future.

Biggest problem of iOS gaming is still the App Store.

It's impossible to find the gems without knowing about them beforehand.

These threads are always great to get some tips for good iOS games. Need to write some of these down to remember for later.

Your list seems to be missing Monument Valley, but otherwise great list mate, will def. look to trying out those games.

Great thread.

I've loved gaming on iOS it's inception. I just hope Apple offers better legacy tools for developers.

Not a fan of losing compatibility with older games.

Great thread. Will show it the wife as she's always moaning about the app store being useless when finding decent games,or even new ones.

Recently bought an iPad and got back into the iOS ecosystem. This thread is fantastic, good job.

I agree doing a yearly thread is better.

Under platformers you're missing the Mikey Shorts trilogy. Mikey Shorts, Mikey Hooks and Mikey Boots (Hooks is the best IMO but they're all fun)

Dropsy's gonna be out on Google Play (and possibly Amazon? not sure) soon. We're fiddling with iPhone but it seems a bit clunky to play because of hotspots and stuff, so we may not enable it there. It would've been out on Google Play earlier but there was some technical issue.
