Wii party

Nothing says uncool like sitting room full of Nintendo nerds arguing over who gets the next turn and trading Pokemon cards.

They don't want nintendo nerds persé, the invitations are supposedly for people of all ages (parents, brothers, friends) - to come and enjoy an evening of playing games (and drinks?) for free.

I suppose the games they'll use for these are Wii Sports and WW: Smooth Moves.

That might not be what they want but it's undoubtedly what they're going to get.

I'm super-pumped for Wii but I wouldn't be seen dead at one of these "parties".

They'll probably do the Cube Club type thing where they have the Wii in a nightclub type environment with some celebs for the Los Angeles one.

Also a mall tour probably would be a good idea.

Why not? I know people who organise SSBM evenings, or evenings of playing Fifa / guitar hero.

This is the same, except that nintendo sponsors it (and gives the host a console for free!). It's low level marketing that could generate a lot of buzz/sales - and most importantly: POTENTIAL.

If you are all nerds who is going to care?

Seriously, playing games with real people nerd or no is fun. I've been to halo parties and had a blast even though I suck hard at the game.

I can't believe you're playing the cool card in a ****ing gaming forum. Grow up. No one ****ing cares if you're cool, anyway.

If you're going to have a "party" though I think Nintendo would rather do it like the Cube Club ... a nightclub setting that can bring people out who are non-gamers and quasi-celebrities and what not to generate media buzz that way.

That or in store kiosks.

People are busy ... for a person to go out of their way to attend a "game party" probably means they're a game fan (specific to Nintendo) already, in which case this is really just a bunch of existing Nintendo fans getting together to shoot the shit.

Which isn't neccessarily terrible, but probably not something Nintendo themselves would waste time/resources getting involved with.

Store kiosks/mall tours and Cube Club stuff would be more of their forte.

What i've read, the hosts are people "known" to nintendo (who for example run a gaming site).

From gonintendo:
Kotaku is reporting that a couple of their readers have been invited to these secret Wii parties that will be taking place soon. One reader claims that their party is on Friday, October 13th. Also, this person is allowed to bring 30 friends with them to the party.

Alright, so basically Nintendo selected people based on some criteria that I don’t even really know of myself, and then these people filled out surveys and submitted a “profile” about themselves. From those two things is how the final ambassador’s were then selected. So, that’s basically how that happened. Now, as for the details, I can’t give out everything, but here’s the basics.

Depending on how many “ambassadors” per area were selected, each one gets to invites a set amount of guests to their event. The event date will be sometime in the near future, though the ambassadors have been made aware of the specific dates. Apparently, the location of the events themselves are being kept so secretive, not even the ambassadors are being told where they are!

My point is more that Nintendo aren't going to reach beyond their core audience with this sort of event. The sort of people that are going to attend an event with the specific purpose of playing videogames are the sort of people that probably have their pre-orders already down. Even if people outside Nintendo's core audience does attend this sort of event, it's probably not the best environment to sell it to them in.

Haha, I'm not. I'm just saying that the sort of people who apply to be an "ambassador" are probably going to be the same sort of people that spend all day in EBgames despite not actually working there.

Well if it's like IGN or CNN or Newsweek or Maxim or Playboy Magazine that wants to host a "Wii Party" sure ... then it's an attractive marketing option for Nintendo.

If it's some kid in a dorm ... probably not so much.

It depends how they market it. If it's like "come have a drink and relax...oh yea, and try out the Wii!" I can see some different people showing up that the event. Otherwise, I'm inclined to agree. It's still cool as hell.

It's viral marketing, the number of people going into these parties could not possibly make a difference with their purchases alone, it's all about generating buzz. The general marketing will probably be the usual TV & print advertising, right now Nintendo's probably trying to find the most efficient way of getting people to play the console. If they do these parties right I think it's a very good idea, it works for Wii specifically because most people will need the hands on experience.

Yeah, I'd struggle to find 30 people who'd be caught dead at any videogame party, even a pre-release console.

I guess it all depends on whats important to you. I wouldnt be caught dead at a politcal party either(Conventions/fundraisers e.t.c.)

I would go to any of the PS3/Wii console party launches in a second though. Videogames, food, people with common intrests=awesome.

It will be like viral marketing. A consumer electronics company did this a few years back. They gave out pokemon-esque game machines to popular kids with the hope that they would make it popular. Don't remember the name thus it prob bombed

Are you currently planning on purchasing a Wii?

Bah. Useless. Not open to "public" gamers but those in the industry? Lame.

I'm hoping that the Nintendo World Store will do something similar... but they've disappointed me in the past...

I think you are really missing the point of what these parties are. With the profiles that people had to submit to Nintendo, I highly doubt that they just picked the most hardcore Nintendo fans. They probably picked people who would best represent the average consumer, or even someone who may have a little more pull or popularity. And the people being invited to the parties are also going to be required to be representative of the type of people Nintendo is trying to attract (anyone and everyone). Also, I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if a few writers or press people were invited to some of these parties.

It's not a stinky gathering in some guys basement. I'd say they are going to try and be as hip as they can be.

EDIT: I'd also think that Nintendo sent out requests for embassadors in places where they wouldn't get just hardcore nerds. Did you see some contest on IGN to host a party? No. They most likely went through some agency and kept things very secretive.

Most regular people will try it once or twice than move on to talking about grown up stuff.

Guitar Heroes has a more universal appeal, hence why it works awesomely in a party setting.

That has zero to do with it.

The point is is that Nintendo is doing this for the nintendo fans, at least that what it seems like to me, and the fusion tour is more for the casual.

What caught me was your "caught dead" comment.

If you have an interest, in ANYTHING, and they are having a party for it, why wouldnt you want to go?

Would you be caught dead at your birthday party? Or is that to nerdy as well?

Then what, exactly, is the point? The Nintendo faithful are going to buy this day one anyway.

As for the rest of your comments: lol.

The point? Its for the fans. Like a gathering of nerds. Im not ashamed of it. Sounds like you have deep-seeded problems that have nothing to do with this.

LOL at that.

Okay.. has anyone else anywhere received one of these invites?

I'm trying to find more information about them because the phone number only says to call back September 1st.

Holy shit, pay attention. From a marketing standpoint it doesn't make any sense to try and sell your product to people who are already buying it.

Do you understand? If yes, are you sure you do? Double-check just to make sure before you go hitting that "Post Reply" button again.

Sorry to snap then.. I just have no idea what these parties are and want to find out more info. There must be other people on these forums receiving emails from Nintendo.

Does this whole party thing with "ambassadors" seem like a effing stupid idea to anyone else? The Cube clubs, where anyone could go, were a far better idea, rather than being frustrated that I'm not good enough to be invited to a ****ing party. I thought the Wii was for everyone.

I was at a Wii Party once, although I had no idea beforehand. Imagine my embarassment when the hosts brought out a bunch of jugs of water and started spreading out plastic sheets on the floor.
