Rumor: Microsoft will allow streaming of your own games via xCloud in July 2024 - bar a few exceptions

In July 2024 (after their showcase in June), Microsoft will allow you to start streaming your own games via xCloud, with some publisher exceptions:

  • Activision-Blizzard
  • EA (some games)
  • CDPR
  • Square Enix will let you stream FF14, but no other game at the moment. This is despite cloud streaming versions of their games existing due to Game Pass.

Microsoft are still negotiating cloud streaming rights with Ubisoft for Activision-Blizzard. Ubisoft want more cash for Activision-Blizzard games to stream. Microsoft, so far, has said no.

All streaming will require an Xbox GP Ultimate account.

Big deal if true. Being able to access your game library from anything with a web browser.

So is cloud gaming/game streaming good or bad now? I keep losing track.

(I don't have an issue with if by the way)

Whenever I would benefit from cloud streaming, the tinterweb connection hasn't been good enough.

By the pool on holiday, in a hotel for work... Sat in a car on a day trip....

Never ever had a connection passable. I don't understand how people benefit from any of this.

Also, whenever I try to use xcloud I'm stuck in a queue for ages and give up.

The option is great, IMO. The overall direction, though, brings up a lot of questions.

It's awesome to just turn on a channel on some device and play your games if your console/PC is not convenient for some reason. (I used Luna a number of times and it was a surprisingly nice way to stream games out to the backyard... this was back when they gave access to some games free, though, and I fell off when charges started getting inconvenient.) I could see having streaming XB games leading to different game purchases depending on where and when you wanted to play types of games. There are a lot of games people aren't buying because big AAA games are clogging up their drive or just aren't the type of games they think of to play, but if streaming can catch on in certain environments beyond the standard AV room, we might see these genres find new life in different forms.

Streaming gaming has been maligned (for just reasons, in some cases; for just reasons of anger and disinterest in others,) but it's a promising new way to access games, as well as a potentially promising way to sell or make available subscription games, if any company can get the service right.

Problem is, more mistakes have been made in the rush to convert gamers into streaming gamers than successes (and greed will continue to push publishers towards what's good for them rather than what's good for customers, and further mistakes will be made.) And even though streaming has taken over most other entertainment distribution forms (for good or ill,) hardcore gamers have so far been vocally against this same future for gaming.

We still can’t even play OG Xbox or Xbox 360 via remote play. I wonder if this means OG Xbox and 360 games won’t be able to be played on the cloud either.

I was wondering how the hell ABK games weren't included. I forgot about the Ubisoft deal.

Reddit thread is confusing though. It says publishers will have the option to opt in or out. So is MS just going to make everything available on cloud unless the publisher tells them no? It almost sounds like MS went to all the big publishers and got approval. Then decided they are just going to force everyone else to complain to them if they want out.

It comes off as MS went to the publishers and those three (CDPR, EA, and SE) opted out in addition to the Ubi limitation. Everything else should work.

Weird to see EA in the list, you’d think they have everything to gain by allowing more people to get hooked on their MTX.

Or do they expect platform holders to pay them separate fees for streaming ?

They don’t want you playing old sports games for too long, because then you won’t buy the next one. Makes sense.

Laughed out loud when I read that shit about Microsoft making an offer to make Persona 6 a console exclusive. I’ve seen more convincing storylines on pornhub.

How the hell did you others read that and not immediately dismiss this guy as a loony?

Yesssssss. Finally. I've been waiting for this ever since Phil mentioned it at June 2022 Showcase. Figured there was some kind of hold-up.

Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon on my phone!!! With my criminally under-utilized controller shell :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Which is incredibly useless, imo.

Not really, the quality is higher then XCloud. 4K/60+HDR and it's a great test for further expansion. There are a lot of games you can easily stream instead of installing again because the quality is just top notch.

Unless I'm going for something quick like a trophy or quest then I don't see the point personally. I'll just install the game locally and get the better experience.

Baffling that that their cloud is as good as you say and yet Portal and remote PS client cannot access it. Just a waste.

Gaf always comes around...it sometimes takes years...but eventually reason prevails.
Streaming has been great for years!!
Who knew all it took was the ability to play some Kameo or Banjo Kazoo: Nuts and Bolts to turn those frowns upside down.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
It states ABK games are not coming to xcloud.

It's under negotiation right now per the leaker, it could change by June (if this is real in the first place)

Microsoft are still negotiating cloud streaming rights with Ubisoft for Activision-Blizzard. Ubisoft want more cash for Activision-Blizzard games to stream. Microsoft, so far, has said no.

Anything that gives you less ownership is always bad, remember that. Cars are even getting into this racquet

This is about allowing streaming of content you already own, so this doesn't come under 'less ownership'.

From the context I understand that it refers to the exclusivity of streaming rights for the game only on xCloud, not that it was trying to achieve console exclusivity for the game itself.

From there, the news would make sense as MS/P. Spencer have already hinted at the arrival of streaming of purchased games. As simple as waiting a little (Xbox Showcase?) and seeing how true this was.

Just my opinion, there's a reason I still like steam and GOG for my purchases.

That does make a whole lot more sense, reading it in that context.

I think the streaming plus the fact that Xbox games already run in a virtual environment is going to lead to the next step being an "Xbox OS" that will be licenseable for device manufacturers. That seems like a good way for Microsoft to allow backwards/forwards compatibility, while slowly stepping away from the console business.

You must not have read all of it...
