Having grown up with a Genesis, I didn't really play Super Nintendo games till much later in life and I don't consider the library terribly compelling. I think some of the heavy hitters are fairly mundane affairs. Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Super Castlevania IV, for example are just... I unno, dull to play. That said, I really dig the already mentioned Metal Warriors. I also am a big fan of Batman Returns, Final Fight 3, Wild Guns, and Swat Kats. Special mention also goes to Street Fighter Alpha 2, which was clearly developed using some sort of black magic.

only 10 votes for Earthbound 😓

my take:
-super Metroid
-Earthbound
-donkey Kong country

also, where is Terranigma?

I'm a little bit sad that all my top 3 games were early (launch?) titles: Super Mario World, Castlevania IV and Zelda. They never topped these early titles in my opinion, but Super Metroid comes close.

Then it all went downhill I think.

Difficult choice considering they never put Xenogears on SNES.

So for "best game for console that does not have Xenogears" I guess I have to settle for Chrono Trigger.

I'd probably have to do a whole huge deadliest warrior style analysis just to work out what my true top ten list would be for snes games.

Man that is hard to pick just 3.

Final Fantasy VI I only played recently, like 5 years ago but it was amazing so I jumped it to the top. Link to the past has to be there. For the last one it was tough I ended up going Super Mario World becauase that game was perfection to me when I was a kid.

Super Metroid
Secret of Mana
Street Fighter

Are all just outside the top 3

My pick is obviously Yoshi's Island.

Of the games in the poll, my top tier are:
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario World
Zelda ALttP
Super Metroid
Mario All-Stars
Mario RPG
DKC2

I also enjoy the following games:
Chrono Trigger
FFVI
Super Mario Kart
Star Fox
DKC

I have played but do not like very much (or at all, depending on the game):
Street Fighter 2
Earthbound
Mortal Kombat 2
Super Castlevania 4
Super Punch Out

The others I haven't played.

EDIT: Oh, we were supposed to pick three, then Yoshi, Mario and Zelda.

Such a tough choice. Top 2 are definitely Mario World and Zelda.

Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Yoshi’s Island, Super Metroid and Castlevania 4 are all standouts as well.

Only three... that's tough...
Earthbound
Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

But would have added
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country
Final Fantasy VI
Secret of Mana
Super Castlevania IV
Super Mario RPG
Super Metroid

That's only if sticking to your list of course, so many more.

Resident Cheap Arse
Man... no Actraiser. That's essential on any best of SNES list

Would've like to vote for Terranigma and Shadowrun but appreciate they're not as high profile as the ones on the poll.

Missing way too many great games from this list man,

Wheres my Tiny toons, Secret of Evermore, Mystical Ninja Goemon ( Legend of the mystical ninja), Lufia 2, Illusion of Gaia, Zombies Ate my Neighbor's and Phalanx to name a very select few.

Also you have Megaman X, but not X2 the far superior and greatly more difficult sequal.

Chrono, DK2 and Super Metroid. Three games still supremely enjoyable 25 years later, the pinnacle of their respective genres/studios in the 16-bit era.

I grew up with the DKC trilogy, so I'm gonna pick DKC 1&2. For the last one, I'm gonna go with Zelda. ALttP is just super impressive for its time.

I’m planning to do another poll for N64 games. This is my list at the moment:

Super Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye 007
Mario Kart 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
Perfect Dark
Star Fox 64
Majora’s Mask
Conker’s Bad Fur Day
Diddy Kong Racing
F-Zero X
Wave Race 64
Super Smash Bros
Sin and Punishment
Mario Party 1/2/3
Blast Corps
Pilotwings 64
Paper Mario
Donkey Kong 64

I think it covers the most important games, but I might possibly want to switch a game or two for Rogue Squadron and Harvest Moon 64, maybe even Jet Force Gemini and Ogre Battle 64. Exclusives only this time so no RE2 etc. It’s 20 poll slots maximum so does anyone have input?

If you want to add another game you have to tell me what you think should be removed.

Missing Shadow of the Empire, tbh. That game was huge in its heyday.

A very rough decision but ultimately I went with the games I keep coming back to:

Donkey Kong Country 2
super Mario world
And super Metroid.

Link to the past misses out by being a little bit obtuse at times for me. It shows its age at times.

Chrono trigger is still the best jrpg I've ever played but I rarely go back to it.

I never liked yoshis island to be honest.

I would suggest adding:
Rayman 2
And wwf No mercy

You'd be surprised how often they show up on best of lists.

1. FFIV
2. FFVI
3. Super Metroid
4. Actraiser
5. A Link to the Past
6. Mega Man X2
7. Chrono Trigger
8. Tetris Battle Gaiden
9. Metal Warriors
10. Nosferatu

Forgot about this game. Not a great game playing against the cpu..... way too easy. Even the unlockable all-black Nintendo team of maxed out stats was easy. There was a cheesy goal you can do.

But as a two player game, it was great. Very balanced game, and you could even spin the ball.

Votes for a couple but where's axelay? One of the most graphically impressive games on the snes. Played well too. Loved that fire monster. Also, black..

Although Super Mario Kart and Final Fantasy VI are among my all-time favorites I had to go with Super Mario World, Super Metroid and A Link to the Past because they're even better.

See, that's the reason Mario Kart is low.

Link to the Past
Super Metroid (Maybe still the best in the genre)
DKC2

I played through DKC2 for the first time last year and it blew me away. I think it's superior to Super Mario World in different aspects.

My honorable mentions would be:

Chrono Trigger
Yoshi's Island
Super Mario RPG
