I think you brought up an excellent point, OP, but brand confusion isn't it.
Most casual and non-gamers are first going to hear about this thing from their hardcore friends...
Given that MS made a conference deliberately to appeal to the casuals and non-gamers who are NOT going to have seen the conference, and not the hardcore gamers who are, the second hand information is not going to be what Microsoft wants its target audience to hear.
