Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Both Sony and MS are acquiring studios which have way more employees than their current studios.

Interesting.

I am sorry OP, but we Green Rats strive for accuracy in our reports.
343 Industries - 750
I couldn't find this anywhere. They should be around 500+ according to LinkedIn.
Bethesda Softworks - 1100
Too low.
Bethesda - ~500
Zenimax Online - ~500
That alone puts them in 1000+
id Software - ~200
Arkane - ~200
MachineGames - ~150
Tango Gameworks - <100
Roundhouse Studios - ?
And with all the support and localizing staff in the publishing division, it would be around 2000.

After seeing their last 2 games i would say the opposite, imagine the results if they split in 2 teams...
343 issue is management. Not the size of the team. They put out a great game that we can see the direct impact of poor management since they missed literally every deadline.

The issue is lack of content. This game should not have been released in 2021. Imagine if Forge was available at launch?

Manpower is supremely important tho.

Infinite absolutely felt like it was an incomplete game, from the subpar graphic to the mono thematic location to how by the numbers and boring the open world was to the alpha state of the multyplayer, the only saving grace was the gameplay that is not even fully their work since it's just an iteration of bungie's work.

A lot of things are important for a game, budget, manpower, talent, etc.

Management is only one of these aspects and it can't be the scapegoat for everything that goes wrong.

I would never assing the next big halo to a team of only 300 people, no matter how good their management is, and especially if it is open world once again.

Since I'm dumb and did not find this thread while creating my own, I will post numbers I found here, because they are different then OP's.

Few caveats:

1. Japanese studios don’t have a huge presence on LinkedIn, hence low number of Tango Gameworks employees.

2. I’m not counting publisher arms like whole Bethesda Softworks. Just individual studios.

3. Yes, I know that numbers are not exact, but it’s certainly better than nothing, right?

4. I also collected number of employees in June 2021 so I will put it in bracket so you can see how big of growth (or otherwise) every studio experienced in year and few months later.

Mojang Studios - 925 (674)
343 Industries - 527 (564)
ZeniMax Online - 521 (457)
Bethesda Game Studios - 441 (390)
Playground Games - 381 (314)
id Software - 304 (286)
Rare - 286 (267)
Obsidian Entertainment - 282 (237)
Arkane - 270 (257)
Turn 10 - 200 (163)
The Coalition - 191 (196)
MachineGames - 158 (130)
Xbox Game Studios Publishing - 148 (83)
Ninja Theory - 136 (122)
Undead Labs - 129 (94)
inXile - 116 (110)
Compulsion Games - 91 (70)
Double Fine - 78 (79)
The Initiative - 49 (72)
Alpha Dog - 23 (16)
World's Edge - 12
Tango Gameworks - 11 (9)

Roundhouse does not have presence on LinkedIn, but I individually counted around 60 employees.

And just for fun, there is also number of employees from ABK in case deal goes through

Infinity Ward - 635
Treyarch - 595
Sledgehammer Games - 532
Beenox - 493
Raven Software - 382
Demonware - 259
High Moon Studios - 246
Toys for Bob - 142
Blizzard - 5754
Proletariat (part of Blizzard) - 37
