Xbox’s Phil Spencer criticises PlayStation’s PC strategy for being ‘late’ and ‘charging twice’

"Xbox boss Phil Spencer has criticised PlayStation’s PC release strategy in a rare dig at the rival platform holder.

Speaking during a briefing for media and analysts this week, the exec criticised “others” who bring console games to PC, stating that they were releasing PC versions “years later” and “charging [players] a second time”.

For several years Microsoft has released its Xbox Games Studios titles simultaneously on PC and console platforms.

In comparison, Sony released its first PC port, Horizon Zero Dawn, in 2020 – over three years after the game’s PS4 debut – and the company has said it will prioritise consoles for its game releases going forwards.

“So right now, we are the only platform shipping games on console, PC and cloud simultaneously,” Spencer said in a video presentation.

Others bring console games to PC years later, not only making people buy their hardware up front, but then charging them a second time to play on PC. And of course, all of our games are in our subscription service day one, full cross-platform included.”

The difference is that these ports are late to the party and have to be retooled for PC vs the stuff on MSFT's end being made simultaneously.

The bit about buying it once is valid though but I'm not sure if/when Sony will go that route since their IP is stronger and they prioritize exclusivity for their platforms instead of simultaneous PC SKU's.

I feel Sony doesnt give enough attention to its baby Psnow. That service is underutilized.

and as for pc, i doubt sony can handle it, like xbox. Their business is hardware, they aren't sustainable as Nintendo IP. So they cant risk releasing day1 on pc. and doing that would make their system obsolete.

Xbox on other hand, has trillion dollar company. they don't care whether they sell consoles or not. hence why they focus on game pass.

Do you get the Steam versions of Xbox first party for free if you buy on Xbox?

Sony doesn't make money on PC sales unlike Microsoft, I don't mean PC games I mean actual PC sales, MS makes money from every PC sold with Windows so encouraging people to game there is fine for them. Sony isn't forcing people to pay twice either, I'm sure the vast majority of people who bought HZD or Days Gone on PC never owned it on PS4 or probably even owned a PS4 at all.

Of course 3rd party games are on xbox, pc and cloud streaming. Hasn't that been a thing for a decade? What else do they have?

Horizon sold between 1-2mil, similarly to Forza Horizon 4. Halo, Sea of Thieves and Age of Empires 2 DE sold between 2-5mil each. And that's only on steam for games that are available in GamePass.
they live in their own world. they dont want to admit that pc people love xbox games (sea of thieves, age of empire, Halo, forza horizon 4). only thing that comes close is bloodborne, and Spiderman. the 2 ip sony wont let it go.

Already posted. The last thread was locked. This is console wars.

Doesnt matter if the CEO of Xbox is doing.

It's quite ironic that he talks about "toxicity" in gaming but then says shit like this while constantly propping up his gang of twitter warriors.

He's lucky Jim Ryan is a slimeball as well, if not Sony would wipe the floor with him in ways that would make the way they destroyed Mattrick look tame.

MS is just happy having more eyeballs on either platform, as long as it's not Nintendo, Apple or Sony, they are happy.

Well he looks like a clown
nah he isnt. He needs to pressure sony. This is a benefit for their users, which honestly needs to see outside of their box. The ability to have cross progression is heavenly teary. Playing on your pc, then xcloud, then xbox is phenomenal. i hope PlayStation people experience that. instead of the usual crap of our stuff is better, we dont need yours.
