Wreckfest is a much bigger, varied, and deeper game than Destruction Derby (PS5)

Do/Did you like Wreckfest?

In the beginning, I thought Wreckfest was just a simple, indie game, low budget game that replicates Destructions Derby with bare-minimum content. The title and the cover of the game didn't help understand what's under its sleeves. The Crew 2 offered a similar Destruction Derby DLC as well that might make some people think that Wreckfest is irrelevant. But no, this game has one of the best gameplay mechanics ever, and full of content! Let's break it down:

Content is filled in this game, with Career mode having tons of racing modes according to categories like the ones you see in AAA games and more! You have your regular Nascaric racing modes, Rally racing, destruction derby, bumpy arena racing, and some really goofy racing modes like sofa and school bus racing! Compared to known AAA games, Wreckfest stands tall and proud in comparison with so much content for someone seeking a peaceful offline gaming.

Wreckfest-20210509003426.png

You have also custom racing mode that you can tailor for yourself! It's a great way to make your game loop fresh and fits your flavor. MP is now filled with 24 cars, up from 8 I think. You should experience some fun times on MP of course, just don't get enraged by people pushing you off track. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

Wreckfest-20210509000011.png

It also has a wide variety of vehicles to choose from! And the fact that you can swap engines then you can keep your favorite, low level vehicle all the way to the end! Or you can do the other way around and demote the engine to enter some restricted, lower tier races!

Gameplay is one of the best, if not THE best, I've experienced in recent years. But I would suggest turning off stability and traction controls and play with MANual, of course.

wreckfest1.png

And for MT I would suggest using preset #6 so the right analog works as the shifter, L1 is clutch "not necessary but good if you wanna force a drift in some occasions", and R1 as the handbrake.

wreckfest3.png

Tuning could make a better vehicle for certain tracks as well, so don't be afraid to test that out. Higher gear ratio will make it more controllable around corners/drifting, lower will achieve higher top speed and more understeer+oversteer. Stiff suspension is good for less bounciness and stability in street racing, but soft could provide better control on gravel. Differential being limited is the best of both worlds, but having it open should work better on street, while locked will be good for offroad. Brake balance depends on the car, usually cars have 70% front and 30% from factory, depends on what you wanna achieve as one would cause oversteer (rear) and the other understeer (front).

wreckfest2.png

Customization is great in this game, starting with engine swaps to transform your preferred, unbranded vehicle! Although unbranded they are direct rip-offs of well known cars. You can strip your car to have more performance over protection, and this could backfire in bumpy situations as your vehicle will be harder to control after jumps and could roll over or pushed more easily as it's physics based. You can make it a tank and push your rivals sideways but lose lots of speed and acceleration and as well encounter more understeer and oversteer in corners. It's all up to you.

Wreckfest-20210510012344.png

Wreckfest-20210509220142.png

Graphics look decent in the game, would rate it as high as 8/10 after the patch which had some graphical errors and lots of aliasing and shimmering. Although there is still some shimmering and aliasing but it has been much better after the latest update. One of the things I didn't like is the butterfly scoops of the tunnel ram are static, which is a minor details but seen on games like The Crew.

Wreckfest-20210509001113.png

AI in this game is one of the best things about this game. There is no rubberbanding crap going on, AI keep racing while you're not around, and make dynamic choices and mistakes! And if you're lagging behind don't expect AI to slowdown to make you feel good, at least in Expert difficulty, although I would advice playing in Novice and complete the side objectives and revisit the tracks later in Expert mode to focus on just winning if you're a completionist. Also with such AI you might end up with all your competitors wrecked! Watch the videos below.

Wreckfest-20210509010227.png

Damage and particles are amazing in this game! Everything stays in place, such thing makes me accept the graphical tradeoffs they made as gives you a realistic feel with all the damage caused to cars and tracks! Your can can even lose a wheel if you get hit their constantly!

Wreckfest-20210509010126.png

Sounds in this game are great as well, not the best but very good. You hear some squeaking sounds sometimes from your car or other when they have broken something. Also passing by burning vehicles sound epic!

Wreckfest-20210509010322.png

Music in this game is well picked, although I would turn off music during gameplay as there is no better music than engine roar! Also to help shifting your gears properly.

Positives:

- Impressive gameplay mechanics.
- Amazing realism of damage with detailed part damage.
- Large amount of offline content.
- Solid multiplayer up to 24 players in one session.
- Very good AI with dynamic outcomes: No cheap implementations like rubberbanding or AI waiting for you to overtake.
- Good visuals and graphics.
- Sounds are great and satisfying.
- Music fits the mood of the game perfectly.
- Solid tuning and modifications, with lots of customization that you may do for each race/competition mode.

- Customizations and tunings are physics-based and provide sensible improvements and tradeoffs.

Negatives: (mild though)

- The game could use a better anti-aliasing solution.
- Butterfly scoops of the tunnel rams should be dynamic, not static.

- Unbranded vehicles (an impossible dream for such a destructive game).

I would easily give this game a 10/10! I got it on PS Plus but was willing to buy it when it gets the PS5 patch, so I went to buy both season passes (1+2) for a total of $35 to support the devs!
--------------------------

Videos I made (all recorded internally on PS5), all in 4K HDR and original audio so have a proper headset to enjoy sounds in this game! All videos recorded internally in 4K@60fps HDR in WebM. Audio is kept stereo which is suited for 3D Audio, or a remixed 7.1 channel into 3D space in a lossless PCM (AKA LPCM).

Novice difficulty, good for completing the side objectives:

Expert difficulty, good for higher challenge for core racing and for revisiting missions:

An extra one, some cars are better than others for drifting through corners:
(4K version is still processing since 12 hours on youtube! Most others took long enough as well)

EDIT: A new aggressive gameplay: (cut the music because of copyright claims)

Yeah honestly, especially now with the SSDs in these consoles it's such a great, immediate pick up and play experience.

I often find myself just jumping in for a race or just to cause some chaos for half an hour.

Very nice, glad that this game is finally getting a recognition.

Yup, bought both season passes to support the devs, although I was willing to buy it anyway.

So addictive and fun! Had a blast with it, and still playing it to get all the cars!

Well yeah of course it is, DD is fucking 25 years old.

Meant as a concept and modes in general.

UPDATE: I made a mistake and replicated the same video twice, here's the other one (on the OP now)

Anyone has wheel support experience?

What does that mean exactly?

Heck yeah, been having a blast playing this game. It evokes & reminds of the fun, that joy I used to feel when playing games on PlayStation 1 & 2 consoles growing up.

Indeed! But this is on par with AAA racing games! Can't wait for their new game next. If anything I would suggest Sony get them and have them handle Destruction Derby (rebrand the game/sequels) and make Twisted Metal. They could as well squeeze them under MotorStorm because their physics are impressive! They can finally make this a true gameplay: :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

Steering wheel support. Eg. g29.

Have one unopened. Wonder if this is a good reason to bother.

I have two PS3's and two copies of Motorstorm including a digital backup, so that I can always enjoy the masterpiece into my retirement.

I'm going to emulate it on PC for 4K60 and start playing it there, and it will still be the best game of this genre 14 years later.

Wreckfest however, has the driving physics I wished motorstorm had, and Motorstorm has the tracks and gameplay absurdity that I wished Wreckfest had.

Would love if Sony could get this studio and merge Wreckfest/Destruction Derby under Motorstorm! Would easily buy that for $70, a good reboot.

Lol, true. The PHYSICS!! YESS! I was wondering why you didn't dedicate a full paragraph about it in the OP. It is amazing. Fantastic post, nonetheless. :messenger_beaming:

Can't wait for their next game as well.

Thanks for the detailed OP, Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem . I had heard of the game, but I didn't know much about it.

Question - Is it primarily an online multiplayer game, or primarily single player? Or is it an equal mixture of both?

Haha! Well had to focus more on this game and not mix them up in the OP.

It has PLENTY of content for single player, I didn't touch MP yet but singleplayer, Career mode, is so satisfying!

Each of these tiers have lots of events inside, more like old times GT games.

And for MP, you won't be disappointed!

Some goofy races as well!

I liked Flatout 1 & 2 more

Sadly, never played them.

So you want flatout

No.

The driving physics of Wreckfest is very close to the original Flatout. It is very close to the first Flatout, but it lacks that experience of making your driver to fly through the front window. And no those bowling events etc. But the driving model is very close.

What I don't like about Wreckfest is that the roads feel too wide and there are too many cars on the track - for some tracks it is a hot mess. Also the drivers lack identity - in the first game they did have names and had their more or less unique cars through the cups.

Flatout 2 was great. The drivers had their own identity, cars were less fragile so random box wouldn't make your driver flying...Also it had much faster and more dynamic gameplay. However the damage model became worse, but in everything else Flatout 2 was superior.

Sadly, never played them.
I remember the line in some review with line akin nobody waited for Flatout, but those who purchased it realized how lucky there were
Essentially Wreckfest holds the fire of the first Flatout, but lacks some dynamics.

Still I am amazed they have not added the physics playground like there was in tech demo version... All I want to do is roam around the destruction playground

Love the game, made me laugh a lot in MP. But my god, I haven't sat so long in a lobby since the Dreamcast days. Shorten that shit to 30 seconds. Cunts too slow to change their car, fuck 'em.

Yeah not just choosing cars, you sometimes add or strip armor for certain goals ;)

Still I am amazed they have not added the physics playground like there was in tech demo version... All I want to do is roam around the destruction playground

Maybe their next sequel will meet that demo! You know, more powerful hardware around.

I'd rate this higher than the Motorstorm franchise and I loved Motorstorm!

It's a better game indeed. With such physics they can make something even bigger!

I mostly enjoyed the racing part of it, although destruction derby was fun but nothing you would pay money to buy. The gameplay is so satisfying and customizations, even though not too deep, is pretty impactful. You think your jumps ruining your race? Add more armor/weight! Feel you need more speed and to be more agile? Strip out even the factory bumpers. I tried that with the truck and made it super jumpy! So you may adjust the suspension as well. Also making the gear ratio higher helps a lot in drifting/cornering.

Had a blast with the game and will continue play it from time to time!

Comparing a PS5 titles to a PS1 title with the outcome it’s a deeper and more varied title?

Or was there another DD released I wasn’t aware of?

It's more of the reception of this game that it's just destruction derby with the same modes. It's a much bigger game that has engine swaps, deep modifications and visualization, racing, etc.

I first saw this:

Said, nothing new, more like a Destruction Derby reboot. The racing part in this game is so detailed and great, and the title and cover of the game plus the slogan made it sound a bit generic, honestly:

apps.62864.69762792333465121.4086c71f-fab9-4c14-b959-3e77164a74cf.20973bfd-77f7-41d0-8e0a-7cb51d9f8add

Especially it's a small studio, AFAIK.

For that, there is actually a good reason. In Finland (Bugbear is a finnish studio), they actually have this kind of races with car parts all over the place. So the brand doesn't matter that much and it would be a waste of money licensing them officially.

The race is at the end.

Is not thaaat great.

For being a physics based game, they steered too much to realism.

There's no nitro and lots of traks are designed for pure racing.

Single player is just fun for the first hours. Once you crashed and wrecked lots of times, there's nothing more to see.

Multiplayer is better, but the time you waste waiting becomes insufferable after some time.

The game has its moments, that are beyond hilarious, but there's a lot of nothing between those.

I mean, what's the point on calling it wreckfest if you dont design your game around wrecking??

Try the settings I've put on the OP, stability and traction control should ruin the experience if not turned off, also automatic will ruin your control and approach to corners and drifting.

Wha? A modern game is deeper than a game that was put on PS1?

Wreckfest is fun tho!

I for one thought it was a simple, small game being made by a small studio, so though it's more like Destruction Derby remake at best, but it's a lot more :)

Great game, but for me the best game ever in the destruction derby genre Will always be Destruction Derby Raw

Only a remake of itself could top it, skyscraper mode and bomb mode are the GOAT modes lol, funnest eved

I've been a fan of the Bugbear's first FlatOut on PC. I really liked the soundtrack, and when I learned that the game arrived on GOG with soundtrack as a bonus (typical GOG feature), I bought it instantly although (I think) I already owned the game on Steam. For many the biggest flaw was not having a split screen mode. A few years ago I found out there is a PS2 port of the game and shockingly with split screen, I had to own it :messenger_beaming: . The sequels didn't do much for me - FlatOut 2 wanted too much to be more commercial (nitro shit, blur...).

I was playing the game for the first time on my PS5 for the last few days and it's good spiritual sequel for the first FlatOut. It's very disappointing not having a split screen mode. I saw the Digital Foundry analysis for the previous generation and seeing that the consoles are to weak even to deliver a 60 fps on PS4, I understood why there is no split screen. So I prayed for an eventual PS5 version with 60 fps (and maybe a split screen mode this time) and skipped completely the PS4 version.
The game is really fun and I'm really happy for a more modern version of the first FlatOut. A bit rough on the edges but considering that the team behind the game is very small it's understandable. But with the success of the Wreckfest, it gives me hope for a more polished and complete sequel in the future.

It's nice to see finnish studios delivering in such a short time good quality games on the PS5: Control, Returnal, Wreckfest.

I've been a fan of the Bugbear's first FlatOut on PC. I really liked the soundtrack, and when I learned that the game arrived on GOG with soundtrack as a bonus (typical GOG feature), I bought it instantly although (I think) I already owned the game on Steam. I'm actually sad that they didn't bring us some Finnish mythology, which I think they have, to the games! Control and Returnal being set up American games, and definitely is the most famous ground for games/movies, but making it in Finland would be more interesting to me. New perspectives and setups are always refreshing, one of the reasons The Witcher 3 was so successful.

destruction derby is a quarter century old and was a launch game for the very first playstation, so yes I hope a current game has grown beyond what that could offer

Of course, but I bet many gamers looking at it as a small team won't expect it to expand much.

It was just another racing game.

Hype culture needs to be murdered.

Tag, you're it.
I'm so happy to see this game get the attention it deserves <3

The start of a multiplayer race with 24 opponents is something close to madness.
Beautiful and crazy at the same time.

Ask me about my Stream Deck
I bought dirt 5 to have a racer on the ps5 and was supremely disappointed. It is beautiful at times and ambitious, but ultimately has performance issues and just isn't very fun.

Destruction all stars didn't really give any satisfying destruction. I never really got the feel for the driving and the physics felt off.

This game is so much fun compared to either of them. The graphics aren't the best but are serviceable. The physics and destruction are much more satisfying than those other titles. The game is just fun and strikes a good balance between the more serious races and the wacky stuff like couch derbys.

Well, Santa Claus lives in Finland. You want a game about him? :messenger_beaming:
