Similar domestic and overseas totals to Thor 2 are probably pretty reasonable projections at this point. Unexpectedly strong reviews could cause it to break past the high end of that $75m domestic opening weekend prediction.
Hopefully the legs (and positive reception) hold.

I was on the fence about Strange, but the positive reviews pushed me over the edge. I'll be taking my girlfriend on the Tuesday to get that sweet discount.

Thor is strong in Europe. The exchange rate was also much better in 2013, so Strange will probably have to sell more tickets to match up.

I just saw my first Strange TV spot since... October 5th

Everything else has been those norelco shaving Ads on ESPN. Marketing is terrible.

Edit: One thing I respect about Feige is Marvel puts out their reviews EARLY, Civil War's reviews came out a month before the movie did.

Cruise Missile On Target

Actually, maybe not. There are some more impressive ones:

The Big Short (Released 12/11/2015): $28 million production budget, $133,346,506 WW Gross
10 Cloverfield Lane (Released 3/11/16): $15 million production budget, $108,286,421 WW Gross
Daddy's Home (Released 12/25/2015): $69 million production budget (wat), $240,360,392 WW Gross

Overall, according to Box Office Mojo, their total box office numbers this year ($650.4 million) are up from last year ($575.9 million), but stuff like Ben Hur (which shouldn't have even been made yet cost $100 million/grossed $94 million), Zoolander 2 (which somehow cost $50 million/grossed $55 million) and Whisky Tango Foxtrot ($35 million budget/$23 million gross) really hurt them. Without those, I don't think the disappointing box office performances of Star Trek and TMNT would have been as damaging for them.

I also can't help but wonder if Star Trek's budget includes whatever they had to pay Orci and the original writers before they were removed from the project.

Edit: Watching the BTS stuff on Beyond and pretty much all of Yorktown was shot on location in Dubai, and a lot of the sound stage stuff was shot there too. I imagine that's pretty expensive. I guess Justin Lin wanted to do as much location shooting as possible so they built a lot of outdoor sets (i.e. the rock quarry is one massive outdoor set built in an actual quarry). Just from the BTS on this movie, it looks really expensive.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Inferno bombing while Angels and Demons didn't just shows you can't make a sequel to something a little over 10 years later and expect it to make money.

Yep. Lets not forget what happened with Sin City. The sequel should have come out a lot sooner than it did.

$12.5M / 85M Yuan opening day for Strange in China. A bit higher than Ant-Man in local currency but lower in USD due to weaker exhange rates.

Hope Strange does well. Was odd going to the opening at local big chain, first time I've been to a Marvel movie premier with so many empty seats, usually it's completely packed.

Inferno should have come out in the previous decade. Too big a gap between installments means that no one really cares or realizes it is related to other movies.

I think it's going to make a run for $100M this weekend. Marvel films have gotten more frontloaded to their previews, but I think the visual effects porn of Doctor Strange is going to make it an exception.

I do too, and the Thursday previews support that it has a shot. Winter Soldier had a similar Th night and it opened with $95M.

Deadline is saying low to mid 70s for Strange and $40m for trolls based on matinees

$19-20M for Strange's Friday proper

In the last two years, we've also had Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, and Finding Dory. Fury Road was also by far the highest grossing Mad Max film, even adjusting for inflation.

Strange started off quite poorly here in Australia but we tend to have different taste here when it comes to superhero movies. Interested to see where it finishes WW.

Just saw both Dr. Strange and Hacksaw Ridge and while the former was alright, Hacksaw was a fucking religious experience. I've never felt so hopeful about the human race, especially after a goddamn war movie. The only knock I'll give it is that you can tell they took a three hour movie and whittled it down to two. The final battle especially felt like a montage of what was originally a much longer sequence. Still amazing though and really emotional. Second best war film ever, right after Saving Private Ryan.

They should have titled it "The Da Vinci Code: Inferno." I guarantee there are people out there who didn't realize they're connected.

We will get official estimates in 2-3 hours, but Rth was saying $33-34M for Strange's Friday ($23.6-25.6M Friday proper) as of last night. Deadline is saying $31-32M.

Thor 2 opened to $31.9M on that first Friday. $24.8M on Friday proper.

Should probably compare Strange to other opening movies like Cap1 or Thor1. I'd be interested how those compared.

Is that good or bad? Sounds pretty bad to me?
