Why is there not another Max Payne? Or even games remotely close them?

I can understand why R*/Take two aren't bothered with Max Payne. Narrative based, conventional titles that don't have the pull of open world sanboxes with tacked on money making online modes aren't exactly in their current scope...

But are there any games that come close to Max Payne in terms of satisfying third person gunplay? Why aren't there ANY games that come close...Max Payne 1 came out in 2001. You can play it on PC now and it still feels amazing. We have celebrated third person games, but lets be real on a mechanical level none of them come close to what max payne achieved in terms of player agency and gameplay satisfaction.

Here is a video showing an example of what I'm talking about:

Only games I can historically think of that tried are stranglehold and wet...which was a long time ago. Am I just an old niche market idiot? Do gamers these days not actually value gameplay? Are we all much happier watching cut scenes and still having to use lock on because free aim is still god awful(rdr2 & tbh UC4 free aim was dogshit)?

Maybe I'm just missing out on some gems that exist which scratch that itch or that there are some exciting projects coming out that will. Any ideas/suggestions? Help me out before I replay Max Payne trilogy again.

Play Resident Evil 6 and pretend it's not called Resident Evil.

One of the best TPS games ever created. Actually pushed innovative control methods: quick shot, diving, crawling, shooting while prone / supine, melee counters, melee attacks, sliding, the list goes on.

Max Payne 3, Vanquish, RE6, Gears 1. Basically the only TPS games out that pushed boundaries. Uncharted 4 was decent as well.

Max payne 3 is like a Caviar in high category restaurant and RE6 is like a Kentucky fried chicken food, dont even compared.... 😆😆😆😆.

The Crystal Generation prefer a boring game with dwarf colors searching who is the bad guy in a boring space ship and not a Badass game with amazing bullet time, realistic mature story and a marvelous Ost. 🤦‍♂️

Yeah Id love a Max Payne trilogy Next gen port. Dont even bother with a remaster. Just port that shit over with 60fps and good controls

Max Payne 3 has like 1 move, while RE6 has like 20. I would love to take that comparison every day of the week. Max Payne you can dive. Just look at what you can do in RE6 man!

Fantastic game, too bad Payne was a boring downer and a pain to listen to. Not a shred of levity in the dialogue compared with the originals.
If they make a new game in the series, cut the misery porn angle.

I still don’t understand how they didn’t take the max payne game play and slap it right into GTA. it would fit perfectly and vastly improve GTA

This is gta with bullet time, jump-shooting, all of la to drive around in, decent music, and upgradable kung-fu skills, too... I personally loved it... Because it was all i could get on my GameCube

Isn't Control sort of like Max Payne? (same devs even)

Yeah I did try Control but something about it annoyed me. I'll give it another shot.

I was considering giving true crime an honorable mention but there was too much bad kung fu and driving and the shooting wasnt great either.

It's also food for thought that we actually have people who claim TLOU2 has the best third person gameplay. It's not bad but it's still a clunky hunk of shit. If I wanted realism I'd go and LARP in the woods on LSD.

I think for me playing it felt like sinking into a hot tub.. familiar, procedural, low resistance, satisfying fizz when you hit those gas tanks... And a few nice tunes

All of those things are nice in RE6, but it’s ruined by the enemies; they aren’t designed around those abilities so there’s basically no reason to use them. Put those mechanics in a better designed game and you would have a great TPS, but RE6 squanders it. If it actually was a different game with faster enemies it would work.

The fastest enemy I can think of in RE6 is those lizard things, and literally all you need to do against those is quick shot them with the Sniper Rifle and they’re barely a threat.

Wait why and I going on about RE6 in a Max Payne thread?

Reason 101 why gyro motion control should be a wide spread feature on Playstation but people hate change ! :)

There was a time when others tried to copy the success of Max Payne

But none of the games even came close to MP in terms of gunplay, dense atmosphere, story, and embedding it in appropriate levels.

I can't wait for the Steam Deck, to revisit the Max Payne triology.

To those requesting a remaster, the entire trilogy is available on BC on the Xbox and run at 1440p/60hz. They might still be on sale.

Aside, wish they had Stranglehold on BC. That was some solid AA TPS action.

I just bought max payne 3 on thr bc sale and the grpahics and gsmeplay still hold up today. Still not a fan of the epileptic seizure inducing cutscenes though.

Because moving it to the GTA universe would take a lot of resources both in budget from rockstar and console power, which is very difficult due to the nature of the sandbox... Unless it was on PC or PS5 Pro

All of the Max Payne games are cream of the crop of the 3rd person shooters.

It's such a shame that Max Payne 3 is stuck on PS3 on Playstation platform. It's story I didn't like that much but the gameplay is 10/10.

MP3 was like that because it was heavily liner. Hard to do that in a massive open world game like GTA.
Kind of sad liner action games are dying/dead. Too many kids crying about 6 hour games.

Max Payne 3, Vanquish, and Gears 3 are the best third person shooters of all time.

It is a crime that Max Payne 3 hasn't been remastered and there isn't another sequel after it.

After San Andreas it is Rockstar's best game.

I tried to replay Max Payne 1&2 like 2-3 years ago, but it was a painful return, the gameplay simply didn't age well at all, the whole bullet time that was the main selling point back then is what IMO makes the game boring nowadays, instead of having intense action the combat is soooo sloooooooow... But if if anything, Quantum Break is MP's natural success, I recommend trying it out.
