Which was better the Splinter Cell series or Metal Gear series?

Haven't played MGSV (which would probably affect my opinion heavily).
MGS 5 < Blacklist (strictly talking as overall products)

MG5 is a way better game. And i love Blacklist.

MGS is a better series overall and it's not even close.

Both Solid and Big boss are better character than Sam and MGS has a entire universe created around. No one even remember what Sam was fighting for in the first games. Gameplay wise, at the time, SC1 was an improvement compared to MGS, but the gameplay definitely didn't age well.
After that MGS 2-3-4-5 and portable/Peace Walker are better games than their comparable counterparts, even with a masterpiece like Chaos theory in the mix.

edit: A "directors cut" or a "finished" version of MGS 5 would easily be one of the best games of all times. In the current state it's only a top 5-10 of his generation.

Splinter Cell is definitely the better stealth game. MGS has cooler characters and cutscenes but 5’s gameplay was top notch.

These threads are for mediocrity.

It's like comparing Balan In Wonderland to Super Mario Odyssey
or OceanHorn and Zelda BOTW
or Honkai Impact and Devil May Cry V

Metal Gear Solid is one of the rare video games masterpieces, Splinter Cell was always a second-tier action game which is why it never stuck...I don't even need to say it but then forum boards...

I like both series but I don't think they are a good comparison. They tick different boxes.

Splinter Cell certainly has better stealth mechanics etc. because that is its core approach. MGS is more cinematic and as the series went on became less stealth and more action based.

I personally prefer MGS because after Chaos Theory, I think Ubi Soft ruined the series with poor attempts at 'reinvention'.

Splinter Cell is a stealth game.
METAL gear is a fantasy game.
This one speaks the truth . Chaos Theory and SC1 were the pinnacle of stealth game where you actually make use of gadgets , shadows , sound and sandbox approach for the missions .

MGS is like ... stealth is just a part of the overall game . You can run on a rainy floor or showing up in line of sight and still not spotted because "muh game logic not inside the cone of view" . Stealth my ass :messenger_tears_of_joy:

How would you guys compare the two series? I am aware that Metal Gear leaned more heavily on the sci-fi side while Splinter Cell was more realistic. In your opinion what were the highpoints and low points for the series.

Who cares? They are both death. :(

Splinter Cell has more consistent gameplay but I love MGS though. Thing is, the controls and fixed camera of both MGS1 and MGS2 do NOT hold up well. The story and creativity are still great, but the gameplay has really aged.

Easily MGS.

Splinter Cell 1 & 2 suffer from heavy trial-and-error. They finally got the right idea with Chaos Theory, allowing the player more flexibility & the ability to actually fight back if you're caught. MGS1 and MGS2 feature trial-and-error as well to an extent, especially MGS2 when you enter areas without a radar. The thing is, those games are all faster & feature snappier gameplay/controls than the original Splinter Cells.

Let me clarify: If you fail in MGS2 you can reload at the start of the level in 10 seconds. There is always a faster & more efficient way to go through areas and avoid guards than just waiting for a patrol to pass by. The way Splinter Cell 1 & 2 work, however, you often have to trail an NPC or wait for a patrol to repeat this pattern. When you fail in Pandora Tomorrow, you have to wait for the same sequence of events to play out every single time, which is notably annoying in more scripted levels like LAX. You can mitigate this by savescumming, but at that point I'd just play a different game. Its no coincidence that one of the lowest points in MGS series is the MGS4 Act 3 escort mission which bears a strong resemblance to those early Splinter Cells. Doesn't hurt that MGS1 and MGS2 also have hundreds of extra missions.

MGS3 and Chaos Theory are just great games all around; not much to say on those two.

For me, the MGS series was superior for a variety of reasons. I always wanted to get into the Splinter Cell series more, but it always felt clunky to me.

MGS is a masterpice and one of the greatest video game series of all time. The other game is just average at best. No contest.

Both are great for different reasons. MGS2 is my favourite game of both franchises, but Chaos Theory is not far behind.

I'm gonna give it to Splinter Cell. Pandora Tomorrow's Spies vs Mercs is one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever played.

Double Agent was good and even Conviction had it's own charm in multiplayer co-op.

Blacklist I feel was under appreciated. It had a stellar single player experience and it's multiplayer brought back classic Spies vs Mercs albeit with blacklist mechanics (being able to kill mercs front the front, not just neck grabbing from behind, which is trash in my opinion)

Metal Gear no question.
MG is the pinnacle of Japanese game and character design. Metal Gear's villain rogues gallery alone stands up there with any work of fiction in any medium.

Every Splinter Cell ive played is full of westernized jank and goofy looking character models and animation. Creatively generic.
Not even a comparison.

Both are great in the early installments.
MGS1-4 == awesome.
SC 1-3 and sometimes 4 == awesome.

SC started to suck once ubisoft ditched the light and dark /stealth mechanics and chased cod.
MGS started to suck when they listened to the people bitching about the story and cut scenes and basically neglected it in mgs5. Something mgs is known for.

Love these games, and it sucks we have no proper stealth games. Even my fav thief is casualized now and is probably dead along with mgs, sc, silent hill, castlevania, etc...

Also nice to be able to play splinter cell on pc or if i really want to my splinter cell trilogy disk on ps3.

Recently I had to hunt down my disk copy of Pandora tomorrow as there is no digital version. Looks like ubisoft stopped selling it digitally as there is some shadows bug on new windows. and instead of actually fixing the game
they take it off the store. Yet modders fixed it. ubi won't re-add the game to steam or elsewhere.

Would love to play MGS 3 and 4 on pc.. MGS 1 and 2 are on Gog.
Shit would love them all on switch.

Absolute ride or die with MG since I saw that Nintendo Power page

I could do without the whole mind control/floating around angle that the Metal Gear Solid series had. It's like Konami said fuck it, we don't give 2 shits anymore, extracting POWs with a warp zone is a thing. Also OG Snake having all that equipment on him at once was wierd too but Link did it so that's cool.

I appreciate how Splinter Cell is more realistic though. Some of my favorite Playstation military themed stealth games.
