Where does this nonsense that 343 hasn't been a successful developer for Microsoft come from?

GOT? TLOU2? SONY! SONY! SONY! WHY?

The Halo games were not well received by the community. They trashed them. MCC was an embarrassing mess for YEARS.

And since you like to compare them with Sony games. Their games are praised everywhere and they are the pinnacle of gaming. They are the kind of games you use to showcase how far gaming has come. Halo is just...there.

I stress this. I played Halo 3, enjoyed it, and then I played COD 4, and I was PISSED at what I played in Halo 3. I was like "HOW IS A MILITARY SHOOTER WAY MORE EPIC THAN A BAD ASS SPACE EPIC WITH THE LORE AND UNIVERSE OF HALO!? WHY DIDN'T THEY TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS MORE? WHY DIDN'T THEY MAKE SOME STUFF AS INTERESTING AS THE BOOKS. WHAT'S WITH THAT SHITTY ANIMATION WHEN WE'RE SEEING STUFF LIKE WE ARE IN COD 4?"

I felt more from a random scientist having her life's work ended and then her life later ended in Halo 4 than I did from Sgt. Johnson or Miranda Keyes' death in Halo 3? How!? Halo 3 felt as emotionally dead as Lord Hood's face.

Thats all true because I remember Halo 3 coming out and it was pretty good and then a few weeks later maybe CoD4 came out and it was clear that Halo was beaten.

It really reminded me of a few years prior to that when Doom 3 came out and it was decent at the time but then Half Life 2 came out and it was all over. Doom was completely dethroned in that instant.

According to who? I'm the Halo community. Many other fans who consider Halo 4 the best game in the franchise have loved Halo and felt that 343 saved the franchise when Bungie just seemed like they weren't keeping up with the times.

For all bungie's innovations, the campaign did not evolve enough in ways to match what the rest of the industry was bringing. That bungie freedom in the 360 Halo titles just came off to me sometimes as lazy level and encounter design. COD may be more linear, but I'll be damned if COD with all its tricks and distractions and scripted events didn't do a way better job of making their world feel "alive" than Bungie's 360 era Halo titles did. Halo 4 and 5 have been steadily making big strides in improving that area, but Infinite hopefully is set to take it to the next level and truly make something special.

I enjoyed that mech level in Halo 4 wayyyyy more than I ever did a vehicle level in any Halo prior to that. That shit felt so intense. The Mantis!
There's only one candidate for the most intense Halo vehicle section and the debate was closed, sorry I don't make the rules.

Destiny has been the spiritual successor to Halo for a while now too. Bungie basically stole Halo’s spotlight. They had to have known what to do. Make a somewhat similar IP and mold it for today’s market. Molding a new FPS off Halo can’t be too difficult. ADS was added to Halo not too long ago if you consider how many Halo games actually use it. ADS is in a ton of shooters and so is sprinting. 343 has a lot of places where any type of change will get slaughtered by traditional or fans of the original.

This issue isn't just sales numbers though. Halo took a hit in popularity. It isn't the massive juggernaut it once was after 343 took over I guess(outsider non halo playing person view). It is similar to the star wars drama. The latest movie made a ton of money but really damaged the brand. Personally I think halo should take a break.

There we go. You get what I'm saying in full.

This is what I felt was happening to Halo under bungie. It wasn't changing enough to stay ahead and to keep people's attention while other games were coming for its neck. It was on the way down I felt despite seemingly appearing to be at its peak by many. I didn't see it that way after playing COD 4. I knew right then and there we had a new console FPS king.

Look at how the new doom games have reinvented themselves. Halo needs that. I believe 343 with Halo 4, while still very similar to past Halo games, showcased a recognition of what people liked so much in COD 4 or Modern Warfare 2. They felt it was important to make us feel more like a super soldier, pulling off amazing feats of strength. They felt a need to do a more convincing job at tugging at our emotions. They wanted us to in awe of Master Chief. They succeeded in doing so. I wanted to get into his head more, 343 did that with Halo 4. I wanted to be ripping doors open, pulling off superhuman feats, even if they were scripted as hell. Make me believe. Chills went down my spine in the Halo closing credits or in the scene when he refused to give up Cortana to Caption Rio. Even the scripted moment at the end against Didact was cool, I felt. Or getting in the longsword or going after the Didact with the composer. So hype.

I still think Destiny hasn't touched Halo's universe. It's nowhere near it yet, but how could it be? Halo's lore is fucking fantastic. So many loved characters, so many awesome stories and epic moments. I pray that TV series delivers because I need it to.

Ghosts of Tsushima, a game many consider to be one of the best titles released by Playstation this generation, a massive success and huge step up in quality for developer Sucker Punch is fantastic work by a great studio.

People point to the sales of the game as a sign of its success. People consider Sea of Thieves a huge success for Microsoft. They point to the sales of Forza Horizon that it's a success for Microsoft, and Playground is doing an amazing job.

Ghosts of Tsushima sold just over 5 million copies since its launch in July.

Halo 4 had a large $220 opening, was the third best selling game of the year in the U.S. that year, and apparently sold over 5 million copies in the USA alone, and has apparently sold nearly 9 million copies overall. An example of what it did at launch. No shame in being beat by Call of Duty in sales. Halo 4 has sold nearly 10 million copies, near the latest God of War that crossed 10 million...

Halo 5, the game everybody says is this big failure, here is 343's Frank stating that it sold 5 million copies at 3 months.

Halo Master Chief Collection, not even including the Xbox releases, sold almost 2 million on Steam.

Any other studio with these accolades would not be described as a failure, or a "terrible" developer.

Last of us 2 sold like 4 million copies I think on release, and I think is being outsold by Ghosts of Tsushima.

How exactly is the criteria for success for every other major game out there, particularly major Sony first party exclusives, suddenly different when it comes to, by the numbers, easily Microsoft's top selling game studio that is doing equally successful numbers? How are they a trash or terrible developer when they keep putting out enough quality that people are buying the games in the many millions of numbers equal or better to many of Sony's biggest and best titles, and Halo 5 did it's 5 million+ on a significantly smaller install base compared to PS4. Does this fact not mean a thing? What do you think Halo 5 would have sold if it Xbox One had sold as much as Playstation 4 did? Surely quite a bit more than it did.

The outer worlds by Obsidian is considered a big success, and has sold over 2 million copies, and that's even while being a multi-platform title that released on PS4 and PC. How is 343 who accomplished this with Master Chief Collection just on Steam a failure of a studio?

Even the highly successful Forza Horizon 4 did over 2 million it's first week, and I believe by now has crossed 7 million or so? How is Playgrounds a success but 343 a failure? It makes no sense.

343 are being judged by a set of rules that are so strange because even with the complaints and the whining about the choices they make for the Halo titles they've put out, they keep putting up the big numbers regardless. And no, it isn't enough to just say "Oh, well, that's just cause it's Halo" They're putting up the numbers.

And for the people who will use player count as a sign, there's a crap ton of other things out there in the MP shooter arena for people to play than there ever was back when Halo was seen as the dominant console shooter by far. Maybe, just maybe, the Halo community is much more interested in the epic campaign, playing a some MP and then moving on to something new than people care to admit? Is it bad for Ghosts of Tsushima that many have started playing other things? What about the Last of Us II? What about God of War? Yes, I know Halo is a major MP franchise also, but I don't feel that does anything to diminish the success 343 has had with the franchise. People sometimes buy, enjoy and just move on to the next. And I stress again the increased competition in this space compared to any previous time. Halo MP going free to play I think is the right move and something which will have a pretty major impact.

Another overlooked factor because we can already play Halo on PC is that Halo Infinite will be the very first Halo game to ever launch on PC simultaneously with the Xbox console release.

Back to the point. By no common sense measure is 343 somehow Microsoft's worst developer or a developer that isn't getting the job done. Countless studios would trade places for their so called "abysmal" track record in a heart beat. Any notion 343 is among Microsoft's worst developers is utter bs. Their games are well optimized, amazingly well optimized, their games are beautiful. Say what you want about them, but their games are all beautiful, which some failed to ever admit until it was useful for trolling Halo Infinite's initial gameplay reveal, which admittedly needed to be so much better.

But remember one thing: that Halo Infinite people saw was never released, and still has nearly 7-9 more months left in development. What's the next argument? Resources that they have? Even with the resources they have their results have not at all been terrible or subpar. 343 is selling the same numbers that Sony's best games are, and they're doing it with a significantly smaller install base of consoles.

Rant over.

If 343i is successful in anything is by unintentionally making one of the most iconic memes in gaming history.

Just like The Coalition they're doing nothing more than trying to keep the flame started by the creator burning. And they seem to be struggling with that.

It's because of the greatest collection in gaming called the Master Chief Collection that I experienced the franchise for the first time, I am not the target audience as I dislike S/F in general, playing through the campaigns of all these games made me warm up to the lore and universe. I didn't try the multiplayer because I know I wouldn't like to get destroyed and I don't have the patience to invest time to 'git gud' but I know that MP is where it's at for the Halo fanbase.

I know it's like cursing in the church but I generally loved the campaigns of Halo 4 the most followed by Reach, I disliked ODST - it's a pretty good game but not an Halo game IMO. I yet have to play 5 but because of the Halo: Infinite delay I have the time to do that closer to the release of Infinite.

343i undoubtly still sells a lot of games and on it's own it would've been called a succes I guess but people remember the Bungie Halo games simply sold a crazy ammount more and in comparisson 343i pales so to speak. But as someone who's relatively new to the franchise and doesn't have nostalgic glasses on I have a whole other perspective and can without a doubt recommend the MCC if you're not familiar with the Halo franchise, chances are you're going to love the 343i produced Halo 4.

Are you seriously comparing Halo sales to Outer Worlds, Ghost of Tsushima and Forza? lmao

Halo was once the Mario of Xbox, dude.

Who says it still isn't? What other Xbox exclusive is outselling it exactly? Oh shit, I forgot about Bethesda games. :p

By the way, Halo's iconic history does not shield it from being legitimately challenged by incredible games, even as a new IP. Nothing is too sacred for us to say "yo, that game... that fucking game dude" next to the biggest things out there. If something drops and truly trashes GTA or hits that bar, you think the game industry won't stand up and take notice? Ghost is a quality game that despite not having Halo's history is a fantastic title. Outer Worlds also.

God of War supposedly to some is not in Halo's league, but I thought it was better than Halo after the first God of War. I then stopped being as excited after the 2nd game, and then here came along the new God of War and blew my mind. So, yea, what's top dog today can be lunch tomorrow. There's a lot of talent and AAA experiences dropping all over our industry right now, and it's going to get bigger. Uncharted 1 to me was ass, then part two dropped, and now I was like "okay, this is now up there."

Halo 5 plays nothing like Halo and the maps were all garbage.
Well Halo 5 multiplayer is praised and loved universally. Most complaints were regarding campaign. So you are wrong.

God of War and RE7 completely changed gameplay and you all praised it but if Halo changes gameplay, its not Halo?. Hypocrisy at its best.

Halo 2 gameplay feels so dated now. Its so hard to go back after playing Halo 5 and other modern FPS games. People who hate ADS and Sprint can F Off in my humble opinion.

Halo 5 plays much better. Game has to evolve. All new features makes it more fun and appealing to wider audience. I can't go back to old Halo gameplay and sorry to break it you but Halo 5 gameplay its here to stay. Infinite will not play like Old Halo games.

If Bungie is called back to make Halo games i can bet 1000$ that their Halo game will not play like Halo 2. It will play like Destiny and other modern shooters that everyone loves playing.

People have to remember that there wasn't the sort of competition when the original games came out, you used to see your entire friends list all playing Halo 2 every night online, I've never seen that since for any game no matter how popular.

Minecraft is huge but no one in my friends list plays Minecraft lol.

Man Infinite multiplayer will be massive. It will be F2p and it will be on PC with cross play.

Mate, the community at large has been saying for years how 343 ruined the franchise. People still consider H2-Reach the golden days of the franchise. Why do you think MCC coming to PC was the most anticipated announcement for years if the games they were getting from 343 were good enough? Halo 4's multiplayer was deemed dead from the start with the inclusions of loadouts, armor abilities, ordinances, etc. and the amount of video essays Halo 5 got criticizing it were fucking insane. Could you believe they were ready to ship that turd called Infinite were it not for the backlash?

Sales don't mean anything. Is Pokemon a good series because of sales? Is CoD a good series because of sales? FIFA? Lmao stop.

Those pokemon games were good imo lol.

I'm still stunned we honestly don't have a AAA next gen megaman battle network? Why don't they see the money there!? off topic lol.

WHAT!? Dude... FIFA IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE!! You kidding? For people who are beasts at that game, of which I certainly am, that game is insane. Best damn straight up sports franchise to me. Nothing plays more pure or better than it imo. People think nothing changes each year? That's cause they're not hardcore into online play. I'm a div 1 player, and every game online is exciting as fuck. You never really get the same shit twice, always feels amazing, even when you lose.

The thing is not everybody agrees with that stuff about Halo. Many consider Halo 4 the best in the franchise, and many hardcore Halo fans have written constant articles and essays on why they feel it's the best. The passion around Halo 4 is something I think a lot of people underestimate. It is the gold standard for the Halo campaigns imo. People gotta let go of that nostalgia. Halo CE was good, but Halo Infinite has the potential to deliver a vision of that game that was never possible before, and I think 343 can knock it out the park.

I fucking love fifa lmao.

The reality of the facts is what they are asked to do and what users expect each new release of Halo from the community is absurd and above all, no one expects the same amount of content and quality from any other game.. Halo has always seen major criticism why you just can't make everyone happy. Once it's multiplayer, once it's the campaign, once it's the balancing, once there's too much gameplay innovation (you will see it soon about the new hook) another time it is too old school and therefore stagnant, one time the game detaches himself too much from the lore and another "we got bored of master chief"..and again the modes, warzone .... and then the Forge editor. etc etc etc etc. There is no dev that would nail everything in a single game. Not a single dev. Halo has become, unfortunately for the developers, too big of a project, I think it would be better to separate the multiplayer from the single player to release the multiplayer more slowly and to commit more on story mode.
The community is too spoiled with content they need to cut them

Holy shit you've just cemented your delusion. Companies regurgitate the same garbage and people like you lap it up all the same. Idiots like this guy is the reason why Pokemon will never get a serious open-world game, and oh look, he also stans fucking Fifa - the game that has barely any change that warrants an entirely new full-priced $60 installment instead of a simple update.

This is why I cherish the fact that Sony is splitting MS's ass. Not even out of pure fanboyism; they're genuinely one of the only companies that push the envelope in graphics, animation, storytelling, and gameplay.

Nintendo, EA, Bethesda, MS, all of them. Same formula, bugs, tired tropes.

5 is not universally loved and I'm not wrong wtf? The game is very divided on some claiming it is the best and others thinking it is the worst. The campaign is universally dumped on.

Don't include me in your rant. Desiny 1 was terrible and I didn't even bother with the 2nd. Don't care about any of the games you listed actually. Games can evolve sure but nothing 343 added made the series better. Halo 2 added stuff, Halo 3 added stuff and so did Reach.

Halo 5 changes? The spartan charge is unbalanced garbage. Sprint did not improve the maps at all (actually made them worse) Climbing makes tactical gameplay worse because of choke points or lack of. ADS adds nothing other then trying to get the COD crowd (spoiler alert they tried this already and failed massively with 4) Adding timers and other markers ruins the tactical planning of power weapons. The game wasn't any good at launch then they rebalanced the guns making it even worse. Some of this could be forgiven if the maps were good but there wasn't a single decent one.

Halo 4 is an unbalanced mess but after the corrections (mainly pro settings) making it more in line with actual Halos it is pretty fun to play. Halo 5 I would never play again.

they could also divide the team with one bigger part of it dedicated to the campaign and the main game this part of the studio would never go to work on multiplayer. The other (a minor part of the studio) only on multiplayer. Release the multiplayer at least 1 year after the game launch (campaign) so that the team part dedicated to multiplayer can help the other in case of need during the pre-launch. Doing so would also get 1 other effect, Multiplayer mode would be seen as a second launch so a new different entity expected by the users that could fill an empty release time window

First of all, those are a bunch of one sided opinions and if I wanted to bother I could find a ton of positive takes on Halo 4, tons.

Halo 4 is damn good, and this is just a quick glance.

That said, you're missing the point for people who love FIFA. That competitiveness among people who are really fucking skilled at the game is addicting as hell. You might not see it as worth $60, but to many others that love the gameplay, it's totally worth it. They ALWAYS had important, game impacting additions to the way the game plays from defense, to offense, to off ball offense, off ball defense, team defense, shot making, dribbling, ball mechanics and physics, player physics, so many subtle details that the only way to truly appreciate them is to be an actual fan of the sport and the game, enough to understand how the new changes they added can impact the toolset they give us. I make no apologies about loving FIFA.

It's the top sports franchise in my eyes, and not even NBA 2K has shit on it. Nothing flows better for actual gameplay. People sleep on FIFA cause it's EA, and think it's trash like Madden or NBA Live. Nope!

Well its your opinion. Halo 5 multiplayer did quite well for 343 and its here to stay, so you can say goodbye to Series i guess since you don't like new changes.

Folks just ignore Senj.
He doesnt know what he is talking about.
Love this 343 fanboys that claim they love 343 Halo but havent played them for months/years..

Halo's glory days are over, especially with 343 not getting it.
I like how some users push the community to ignore someone just because they think they have the truth in their pocket. )))

Its not nonsense...
They are incompetent
you don't sell 10 millions copies (not preorder) if you are incompetent and launch a turd. Halo isn't cyberpunk
and you being freely insulting upon hundreds of devs

Halo 5 mp IMO is the best halo mp by a large margin. And the best arena mp made last gen.

But, this one thing doesn’t excuse their stewardship of the MCC, and it certainly doesn’t make them any less guilty of the complete fuck up that is infinites development.

Their Managemt needs to go. Nothing less

Honestly, even just this quick early sections of this video showcases how, despite going less open, Halo 4's visual design of levels just MURDERS the other Halo games.

When they flow so well and help tell the story this well, you don't need them to be overly large. And that's what I hope 343 gets back to in Infinite. Use that world and level design not just to throw huge open spaces at us, but use them to help tell the damn story. Halo 4 does this better than any game in the entire franchise...

That's not the counter argument though. The Halo 4 campaign is straight up not much fun to play. Pretty graphics don't carry a game. The story is usually not talked about highly but it's actually very good it's just told in a terrible way and most don't even really know it.

Halo has some StarWars syndrome too.

Only way out of this is developer to simply blow you away, give you something you didn't knew you wanted and not listen to feedback, do your own thing.

Or keep listening to feedback, and given you're not a stellar dev compare to other studios who has been making and redefining AAA, will end up in an slightly above average game that is not attracting anybody, just serviceable.

Success is relative. Halo Infinite is gonna earn a lot of money, not a lot of hearts.

Halo 4 rode of Halo 3's success but fell down, Halo games will always sell, now that MCC has come to PC the community is thriving and even growing at points.

Halo 4's SP was great but MP was trash
Halo 5's MP was brilliant and fresh (minus a few things) but the SP was trash

Halo is still a popular franchise that will sell, why its extremely disappointing but acceptable that it was missing from launch.

Cant wait for Infinite to release.

343 is the Kathleen Kennedy of Halo.

I was gonna say Zach Snyder, guy keeps getting massive budgets and big movies after several bombs/movies that "performed disappointingly". Kathleen Kennedy is pretty good too though.

On a serious note, I think you make an interesting point OP. The fact that the games still sell in the millions is an important consideration, and generally that does speak to the quality of the game to some level. As far as I know the Avengers game is a financial disaster so far, and that big IP behind it.

But like others have pointed out, being a massive Xbox IP, that does automatically give them a sales advantage. And perhaps it's also important to look at the sales and population trends of Halo, rather than just if they were profitable. It seems pretty clear that for most non-casual gamers, Halo has not been what they wanted since 343 took over. I do imagine that this perception could turn around if they knock it out of the park with Infinite though.

Disclaimer: never played more Halo than an hour of Halo 1.

Thats all true because I remember Halo 3 coming out and it was pretty good and then a few weeks later maybe CoD4 came out and it was clear that Halo was beaten.
🤮🤮 Yes, by a bunch of people with the taste of a trash pile, which are responsible that this garbage franchise (aka. Call of Duty) laid the course for the genre the following years until people finally realized that there is more to shooters than a bunch of scripted setpieces in ultra-linear levels with extremely dumb A.I. and severely lacking shootouts.

Another thing aswell is that the Halo community is very split.

You have the Halo CE purists.
Halo 2 Purists
Halo 3
etc

Each group wants the next halo to be similar to that game, for me Halo 2 will always be the best MP experience ever created and I want infinite to be similar, but there is alot (who are a new generation) who want it similar to Halo 5, or those that started with Halo 3 want it to be very similar to that.

I think 343 mentioned how hard it is to develop sometimes because the fans want the same thing but tweaking towards how they know their favorite halo and that multiple camps will be disappointed if its say tweaked to be like Halo 3's gameplay etc.

Goes to the point where players who like Halo CE are abused by Halo 3 players or Halo 2 players abused by Reach players, very weird community but I think we all stand by and want a good halo game to be created
