Unfortunately, it does appear to have underperformed sales-wise, despite being given a simultaneous multi-plat release (a rare thing for a non-Sonic Sega game). A shame, as the reviews and gamer reception was all very good. As it stands, I would prefer the the team that made it to be given the Skies of Arcadia IP and a similar budget to VK4 and see how that goes.
A few glimps of hope nonetheless as Sega released another port of the game last month.
Plus, the first Valkyria also bombed before the franchise being (temporary) saved by hard discount on PS3 and low price PC port.

The problem with Valkyria 4 is the price tag. Fans expected better graphic update or lower price (PS3 or PC many of us bought the first episode at 20 bucks).

During the PS3 era, many games could die if they first bombed but with the mainstream digital era, many games have now a second chance years later. (i think Sega has been surprised by digital Panzer Dragoon Orta sales on Xbox...One).

Sega games are pretty popular in Asia and it's one of the fastest growing market in the world.

If Sega keeps using Asian stars in local Yakuza versions, the franchise will be important all over the world for the next decade. Valkyria 4 had a disapointing start but with backward compatibility on Xbox, PS5, PC, and the popularity of anime type games in Asia, the franchise could make a comeback. Not in 2021 nor even 2023 but Sega didn't completely give up yet (Stadia port in december) There was many years between VC 3 and VC 4.
We must be patient. Sega's portfolio is getting more popular year after year.

I personally have no issue with its visuals. Unless Valkyria can sell as much as FF series, expensive graphics just going hurt it more.

Same for many fans who will buy it at lower price like the first one.
I bought the collectors edition and no regret, it was one of my favourite game in 2018. In my opinion a value shouldn’t be based on how advance the graphics are.

It's not only about the graphics (even if many expected more from a PS3 to PS4), formula and setting are a bit too similar.

Didn't want to downplay the game but explain why he is not a top priority even for fans.

I like the fact the core gameplay is similar to original VC, thats what I wanted but they also made lot of changes to with Character command, APC vehicle and Grenadier class. Unlike in the first game it much harder trying to scout rush in VC4 since there are gatling turret and Grenadiers that can tear you to pieces.

Between Chicago and NYC
I played every VC game - including 3 - and I consider myself a big fan of the series, That said, 4 was a bit too conservative. They were supposedly depicting the most violent front of the Europan War and instead of focusing on Federation soldiers, we get a group of Gallian recruits fighting in a foreign army (!?). They should have either upped the ante on the strategy side of thing or gone full otaku with waifu laifu choices (like in 3) to capture the otaku demographic.

Yu Suzuki's resolutions for 2021 were
"Look back on competitive fighting games. " The sequel to..."

He'll probably be back for Virtua Fighter then.
As of the sequel, it could be Outrun (my bet) or Shenmue but I honestly think Deepsilver will check the sales for years, port Shenmue on all platforms, before to fund (or not) Shenmue 4.

Unfortunately, I also think the Yakuza franchise is hurting Shenmue quite a bit. (even if it's different experiences)

I recommended Shenmue, Yakuza to Japan lovers but only Yakuza interested new comers. I guess stylish modern Tokyo of Judgment, large 60 FPS Yokohama is much more appealing than 20 FPS (30 on PC) 1986 tiny Fukuoka or lost chinese village full of yellow Shreks... (one of my friend was a bit interested by Shenmue 3 because he loves asian culture but he found the character models quite off putting or Ryo too bland. He was much more hyped by Yakuza Ishin for instance)

That Yu Suzuki stuff counts as both good and bad news then! I personally think they will get the Shenmue anime out of the way before making any announcements about a Shenmue 4 (if it ever happens - I give it a 50/50 chance).

I think people should brace themselves for a VR Outrun 3. Yu has always been someone at the forefront of games tech, and he has always been about recreating real-life, so I think VR would really be something he would like to try (I believe he has said so in previous interviews too). I know many would be disappointed by a VR title, but personally I would love to see what he could do with VR. Imagine a VR Hang On or Space Harrier, complete with mechanical arcade seating/equipment!

Well, I think we can declare the result now. The 3 most hyped Sega games for 2021 are:
1. SMT5
2. Bayonetta 3
3. New Yakuza game / Persona 5 Strikers

I think the Switch owners are definitely thirsty for some new games in 2021! Good to see a new Yakuza still so much in demand, despite the recent deluge of Yakuza titles on (almost) all platforms. I expected a bit more anticipation for Sonic after such a long break. I hope that those Project Re Fantasy people aren't getting their hopes high for a release this year - I fully expect to see it again in the 2022 thread :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The good news for the Suzuki fans is that he'll probably be back with one of the most important game from Sega of Japan.
Haruki Satomi told the press it was the 60th anniversary game. (he also said it would take hours to speak about the project).

It would be great if confirmed since his last game with Sega was just a sympathic low budget title called Sega Race TV. (the quality was there but it wasn't made by AM2 but AM11/Digital Rex). Suzuki deserved more...like the BIG BOYS of AM2.

For me personally, I'm most hyped for the new SoR4 DLC (loved the game in 2020).

I'm hoping for more than playable Max, Shiva & Estelle as it was clearly intended for them to be included in the original release.

Don't expect any Yakuza spin off in the US even if GTA games are over popular.

If that happens, Nagoshi would choose europe. As of racing games, Sega fans should forget a Sega Rally by Mizoguchi. As you can see, when he has max freedom he never produces racing games, that's not his passion. Same for Daytona and Nagoshi, he admitted he wasn't really interested by making racing games.
But it's not a real problem, the real motor of Sega Rally was the director Kenji Sasaki (Rave Racer, Sega Touring Car) and he is still directing racing games for Sega. Daytona 2 was directed Makoto Osaki (Outrun 2) so there is still hope even if Nagoshi isn't interested.

What about Daytona on Switch. I started to get hope when they released Virtua Racing but then they stoped the SEGA AGES series.

Maybe Sega's not keen on porting Daytona because of the Switch's lack of analog triggers ? I know the HD version of Daytona Sega released a while back makes an extensive use of those (for all the power-sliding). Only the Gamecube controller can handle that.

Sega made Sega World Driver Championship in the arcade, using Unreal Engine, and still refuses to convert it for home consoles.

What the heck, package that appropriately and make that an home release already!

1. Persona 5 Strikers
2. Any and all Sonic games.
3. SMT5.

There's a lot others like Project Re Fantasy, Yakuza (even though I still need to buy Yakuza 7), and Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. Lots of games I'm looking forward to from Sega / Atlus. Can't wait!

Well, I think we can pretty much write off Bayonetta 3 as a 2021 release:

It sounds like we'd be lucky just to get a trailer, let alone an actual release.

Bayonetta 3 really needs to be announced as I want to pre-order but knew it took years last time and won't make that mistake again.

Shocked that 13 Sentinels finally released after thinking it could be Vaporware (as they cancelled the Vita version), and I hope it has an Amazing story as others claim it to have.

I am hyped for Persona 5 Strikers as I loved the game a few years back and want to see if Koei-Tecmo do the Franchise justice. I loved the story and want to see how the Characters progressed after beating that Final Boss.

I am secretly hoping we get a sequel to Sonic Mania and of course a 3D Sonic game that may or may not disappoint.

Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is an amazing game but a little bit annoyed how it went to almost half the price the week after I bought it (and this was after using a Promo Code to get it cheaper). I can't wait for the future DLC of that game.

I wonder if that NiGHTS news will come true and whether we will get Border Break physically or digitally? I want to try that one out.

Oh well, among these ones is Warhammer Total War 3 taking the lead by far and nothing else listed comes even close.

Also, isn't relic a SEGA studio as well? Because if I'm right about it then Age of Empire 4 takes the second spot with no effort.

If you got a Japanese account you can try it right now. I've tried it a couple of months ago and it was good enough, albeit a bit rigid in movement and traversal.

I think they've also shut down the game on their arcades, over maintenance concerns of the machines.

I also like to see 13 Sentinels gets released on more platforms but I don’t think any of Vanillaware game ever made it to PC.

If they do port a Vanillaware game to PC, then that will be the first one, as they can still charge full price for it (it's currently still full price on Amazon UK). I think it would find a decently-sized audience on PC, Asian-style games are doing very well on Steam. Here's hoping.

Give Binary Domain another shot.
The collection is only at 3 bucks.

As Sega recently noticed with Yakuza games, we don't need games for "westerners" in the west. Make Binary Domain 2 happen, make it even more japanese, RGG Studio...

Stop fucking around already Sega and localize Yakuza Ishin and Kenzen.

NO ! It will be remakes. It's just a matter of time (even the clunky Yakuza 3 remaster is selling well on steam)

"Scott Strichart the Senior Localisation Producer for the Yakuza series confirmed that both Sega of America and Sega Japan want to bring these games to the West but they just need to find the right time to do so."

ps4 Dragon Engine like remake or next gen remake ?

Sega about their classic IPs: "SEGA places great value on our heritage and will ceaselessly protect our intellectual property. We are also continuously assessing all opportunities to remake/reimagine our universes and bring them to the public as innovative and high-quality experiences."
