Blog this blog that...it's all I ever see these days.

Is it me or are blogs just glorified "guestbooks" for dummies?

I mean I see how the simple thing works, but I just don't get the popularity when stuff like this has been around forever, without the cool name I guess.

Someone clue me in ;P

Why is having a blog/journal/diary/whatever associated with 'emo'? Diaries are MADE for writing down private, emotional things. Dammit.

Blogs are making a pretty big impact on the way News is reported and actually forcing Mass Media take notice. Read Wired magazines articles on it. Blogs tend to break stories that would otherwise go undetected, because they tend to grab hold of things and not let them be swept under the carpet.

That there pin says "Nothing says emo like emoticons." Not "Nothing says emo like blogs."
If you were asking regardless of the pin, the answer is that the vast majority of blogs are are written by whiny, self-pittying morons who dress really badly.

Yeah, I read that pin. :p But the poster obviously posted that image because of the word 'emo' -- this thread has nothing to do with emoticons.

Whatever, it's a worthless detail to argue.

To quote a GA classic...

I believe this news.

Yeah,

I was just lazy and posted the first good thing that had 'emo' in it.

I think that blogs and livejournals have the stereotype that the 'emo' crowd are the only ones into it.

I haven't read too many blogs that isn't moody or pining over some sort of significant other.

Guess I'm not alone..hehe

Who came up with Blogs though? Was "Guestbook" just too oldfashioned? Or maybe the term "Website" is overused now?

Small balls, big fun!
I was going to do a blog thread when tennin was online, but this is as good as any.

A list of good political weblogs:

Political Animal - Kevin Drum, who used to be Calpundit. Good, clear, general political blog to start with.

The Whiskey Bar - On vacation now, and doesn't post as frequently as in the past, but a really smart, well written blog.

Talking Points Memo - Joshua Micah Marshal focuses on behind-the-story stuff, and electoral politics.

Fafblog - The world's only source of Fafblog.

The Poor Man - Smart, funny, has huge sideburns.

Crooked Timber - Group, intellectual blog, which has a whole lot of links to other academic blogs.

Brad DeLong's Semi-Daily Journal - Written by Brad DeLong, former Assistant Deputy Secretary of something in the Treasury Department, economist, and professor at Berkeley.

MaxSpeak - Max Sawicky, the incorrigible, borderline socialist Lucille Ball to DeLong's staid, neoliberal Mr. Mooney.

Informed Comment - Commentary on the middle east, which has been dominated by Iraq. Juan Cole, professor at U-Michigan, is not a great poltiical commentator, but has created one of the very few English language sites on the net with daily news about actual events in Iraq, along with expert analysis.

Eschaton - The most popular liberal weblog on the net. I think the quality of discussion has degraded because of the election cycle and the site's own popularity. The poster, Atrios, is using it more as a rallying point for liberal activists than an idea forum. Which is perfectly alright, but not what I prefer.

Also: Pandagon, South Knox Bubba, Orcinus, Oliver Willis, Matt Yglesias, Chris C. Mooney, Quark Soup. All easily googled.

What should my latest entry be? I'm tired of writing about the Astros sucking, and they're not sucking anymore. I don't want to spoil a good thing, and Cubsfan might get cranky if he stumbles across it.

A potted history of blogs

The circle jerk diary model(xanga, livejournal) developed with the sole purpose of commiting continuous atrocities against language seems really popular nowadays.

Anyone can be a writer, but most don't realise compelling content is king. Not this sort of thing.

Blogs are even becoming very useful in the gaming area too. Replacing the .plans really. A good example from not too long ago would be the news of a third ty game.

I don't understand blogs myself. A lot of my friends do write blogs so I can't say I hate people who write blogs though ;-) Personally, I rather write to a particular friend rather than make everyone come to one place and read stuff you do in life. It's more personal writing to that one person.

And ultimately I just don't have the tolerance. My work everyday is pretty much typing up words after words after words. I don't want to be typing anymore by the end of the day. Also, I have a lot to talk about something and a blog simply doesnt cover everything I want to express.

What I do? Go out, hang out with friends, have a meal, drink or whatever, and just talk. More productive, lots of discussions are bound to happen, moreso than simply typing away words.

If you're writer, blogs are a great way to keep you skills nice and sharp, and most importantly, exposed. It's like a portfolio which can be used to get work, as long as you're good of course. Luckily, mine has managed to get some folk's attention and get me work... paid work that is. :)

I promised myself to no longer whore out my journal on the GAF, but since we're on the subject, here it is.

Blogs are here to stay. I enjoy them, but it's easy to see why so many people are annoyed by them. Like anything popular, 99% of them suck. At least it's no longer the realm of lonely girls who want to whore themselves to perverts to get their Amazon wish-list fulfilled.

There are blogs, and then there's LiveJournal. LJ is theoretically good for keeping up with what your friends are doing. I avoid it like the plague and force my friends to tell me how their lives are going in actual conversation.

However, the pain of LJ doesn't mean that there can't be decent blogs. Ideally, the blog format acts as filter for the internet, with someone who shares your interest pointing out things they've stumbled across, with the commenting system allowing a community of likeminded folks to pop up and chat about what's posted. Blogs can be whining, self-absorbed crap, but they certianly dont' have to be. A few personal favorites:

- On the liberal political front, I like the informed legal perspective of TalkLeft and the hyper-detailed, team political analysis of Daily Kos, as well as Kevin Drum's aforementioned Political Animal.

- Zlich is right: MP3 blogs are, indeed, where it's at. Fluxblog, The Tofu Hut, and gabba / POD are my favorites. And, of course, Honey, Where You Been So Long.

- Your favorite creators probably have a blog where they update you on their current projects. Neil Gaiman and Warren Ellis both do a superior job of mixing their own updates with interesting links.

- Rather than read websites full of comic book news, I read Fanboy Rampage's snarky comments about comic book news. Meanwhile, Grotesque Anatomy provides interesting (if somewhat sporadic) commentary.

- Boing Boing is as good a general-purpose blog as anything out there. It's described as "A Directory Of Wonderful Things", which is fairly accurate. On the flip-side, Gizmodo is a great example of a specialist blog.

- Finally, my absolute favorite blog is Teresa Nielsen-Hayden's Making Light. TNH is a science fiction editor at Tor, so there's a vague empahsis on literary/SFnal/fannish discussion, but her posts cover the gamut of creation, she has a superior group of commenters who follow her blog, and her posts tend to be top-notch. For example, check out her entries on the infrastructure of New York City, the writer they call Mary Sue, and the editorial wisdom of Slushkiller. To get an idea of what her comments are like, check out this Open Thread discussing favorite SF/Fantasy novels; I found myself with several dozen more books to keep an eye out for.

I have a personal site, but I mostly talk about random shit like games, music and movies or having weird rants. I'm not too keen on talking about my own life much past the superficial.

It's just a fun waste of time. I don't care if anyone comments or not. I mostly use my site to get the people I know that visit it into random bands. I've been doing a thing about 150 Musicians That Rock (not necessarily best ever, I just like them). I put up a CD cover, information and a streamable song. I like writing about that sort of stuff.

I detest blogs. I don't have the time to write one, and if I did, what would I say. 99% of blogs are boring and the only person who would find it interesting is the person who wrote it.

I'm not so sure what's so special about blogs, either. There have been avenues to make them since the WWW was created, so I'm guessing their popularity just soared when the Internet n00bs realized that they could post their worthless thoughts on the Internet without going into much Web design.

I dig blogs.

I blog for myself, and myself only. When you can type 50x faster than writing, it's a great way to record your life, your thoughts and your feelings.

I don't understand the hate for blogs. That's the kind freedom the internet provides, to post whatever it is you want. You don't have to read it and heck, you're probably *not* reading it anyway unless you're only searching for something to bash. Is what you're posting right now, on this very forum any different than what they do?

I mean, it's not a hard concept to grasp that they are ::gasp:: different people with different interests. There are some people who like reading blogs, some people who like reading books, other people like discussing trivial things on gaming message boards.

Well, a message board is more like a pub, or a gathering place where many people converge to discuss, rant, bitch about things.

A blog, in essence, is like your house/room, where you want people to drop by your place just so they can hear you rant/bitch/discuss.

Just my thoughts. Nothing wrong with blogs.

Like I said before, as much as I like them, I can still see why they're hated. As much good as they accomplish, there's just as much bad, if not more so.

People today are more narcissistic than ever before, and blogs, as well as the attention they provide, is a main culprit. It's bad enough that no one knows how to talk to each other, with email and instant messaging having taken it's place, but now "blogging" seems to be the way that most people choose to address personal matters, which is not only even more un-personal, but in the public eye.

Hey, whenever anything becomes popular, there's going to be a sea of worthless shit. When DV cams became all the rage a few years ago, do you think they were all used to created masterpieces? No. Same thing.

I have a livejournal, which I sort of regret now because I've gotten way out of the actual "diary/journal" stage. Xanga is similiar to LJ, right? What about blogspot? It seems a lot of the "better" blogs are from blogspot...

I'm now slowly experimenting with the amateur news/essay/editorial blog type (like some listed above.) This way is much better for practicing writing skills. The diary type is garbage.
