That freeway expansion project that has been taking forever will be completed, so that expansion work can begin on it again.

Bernie as president hopefully.

Google cars everywhere.

Smartphones in our brain.

A one payer health care system in America hopefully.

Faster internet.

Occulus Rift and 3D goggles being big.

3D immersive porn taking over.

Guys, what if we're watching The Fantastic Four made by Marvel studios in 2020.

The future is bright.

I don't feel much has changed in the last 4 years and 2 months, I doubt things will be hugely different in 2020.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
The Internet will be incessantly celebrating the 5 year anniversary of Back to the Future II predicting the future wrong.

Exactly the same except with one or two "freedoms" gone, with another present and 4K 120 hz becoming slightly less expensive.

New Nintendo portable of course.

Even if you ignore most of my points it's crazy to me that people believe that when basically the entire world has smartphone/internet access is going to be more of the same. Especially since a fraction of the people in the world having internet let alone smartphone access has changed so much already in the world already

Even if they got the rights back today, I doubt we would see a Fantastic Four movie in 2020. Seven years at the most. Though, I could see some of the Fantastic Four villains rewritten into some of the upcoming movies, and a nod/teaser to the MCU's Fantastic Four team.

For what I would hope to see in 2020 is the widespread of autonomous cars. I just want some extra time to sleep before I get to work, or sight-see on a trip to the mountains.

It will be pretty boring and none of the cool shit I expected from my 80s childhood will come to pass.

I guess playing with whatever games and gadgets the next four years bring will have to suffice. Should be a bunch of great new music too.

2030-2040 would be a bit more interesting OP.

Near future is more interesting though, and much tougher to imagine how the political landscape, technological landscape, and social landscapes will shift in 5 years as we have a much firmer base to go on and therefore can't imagine really out there scenarios like WWIII or flying cars like we could easily dream about for 2040. Plus, 2020 is a guaranteed future for most everyone, whereas some people here probably won't see 2040.

Like, we know we won't be using the same type of smart phone devices in 2040, but will we still be using iPhone-like devices in 2020?

Will Republicans shift more to the center if/when their base collapses or will something happen to cause Democrats to shift further right?

Will our tensions with Russia escalate into more proxy conflicts or will things cool down?

But it will be more of the same.

Five years is simple too small of a time frame for people to judge a difference without a major event happening.

1995 to 2000 had lots of cool things happening, but try to describe how fast things changed and you draw a blank. Talk about 1995 to 2005 and you will get a very different answer. Same with 05' to 15'.

What is it going to change in your day to day life? I'm skeptical that sub-saharan Africa among other places will have close to full connectivity in 4 years.

PS5 rules the industry and rumor says Half Life could be released by 2030 once the fanbase is dead or old to even handle a controller.

Oh, and Palestine will probably get a lot smaller than it already is.

I dunno, hope to see some scientific breakthroughs... I hope we can get more efficient bureaucracy so that we can see cutting edge technology and medicine hit the market precisely when they are ready... I hope to see more emerging economies and less underdeveloped countries. maybe we will arrange a real global trade deal with a good international court system that oversees fair representation of every nation and their respective laws. that way corporations like google and netflix can have very real content maneuverability on a global scale. I hope to see a ups or DHL system that has a very streamlined and easy to understand logistics system that works well on a global, irrespective of international obstacles.

I hope we continue to see the growth of transparency that comes with the internet. to such a point that we can hold anyone that is culpable directly accountable for any injustice that they have caused. I hope that newly developed countries begin to impact media and popular culture. Maybe I'm too optimistic.

The only way I can see ~4 billion additional people having smartphones not improving my day to day life is if first all subsequent tech progress was in a vaccum. And second if those 4 billion people did not use the internet in their new smartphones at all. At the very minimum, more than double the current amount of data sources will extremely improve tech that utilizes machine learning. That includes image search, facial recognition, and, finding meaning in our words and questions at a faster rate than before. And that's only if they only use their phones for things like social media and Google searching
Awesome tech rundown OP. Lots of promising things for the future.

Indeed. That was a very well put together post. Thanks for that OP.
Thank you both, I kind was getting annoyed that people sayings it would be the same while clearly not reading the op or looking at the many sources provided

OP, you should include the research that Aubry de Grey and Alphabet inc's Calico are doing in preventing damage to our DNA from metabolizing.

5. Automation is looking to cut IT workforce needs by 25% by 2020

I work for a huge Japanese IT service company, our technical teams have halved in size over the last four years, however the number of managers that manage the service has jumped up a huge amount, we have so many managers now, the company looks like a hieratical diamond instead of a pyramid.

We have so much automation in place already, you can see staff struggling to find work to do, at the moment most staff are retiring so it counters the effect of less work, I think by 2020 I’ll no longer be working in this sector.

Microsoft will finally realize voice was the only thing really useful from kinect and will begin selling a 60$ peripheral for voice commands for the xbox 360. Oh, it'll still only recognize a tiny fixed list of keywords.

Other than that, it'll probably mostly be the same.
