Apparently that's a common sentiment for the first few hours of the game but that after a while you have better options available to you. My question is, does this game do anything drastically different than the previous?

I haven't finished previous Watch Dogs. Watch Dogs 1 I did quite a bit but I just couldn't care for the story at all, second one was just cringe-inducing in my opinion, even though I love SF I wanted main cast to die a horrible death.

This one basically makes everyone have different smaller pool of abilities so some people are better than others but honestly it doesn't matter that much. I find that having a choice of people is actually quite fun but you have to engage with it, i.e. switch characters not just take your hitman and roll over London. Although you can do that with a Dedsec army on one. Honestly I just find the lack of Ubi-bloat and the story quite engaging so far. Or maybe I was so burnt by the excess of Odyssey that just a normal 20-30 hour open world seems like a win to me.

As someone who play the first two I’m starting to enjoy it. The first few hours weren’t that inspiring but if you stick with it it does become more enjoyable. I don’t enjoy the story nearly as much though. Not having a single protagonist hurts the story in this regard. London itself is nice enough (ps4 pro) but it’s definitely the end of this console generation for me as nothing in the world looks amazing or makes me really want to explore it. Overall a decent Ubisoft open world game just don’t go in with high expectations and you may enjoy it.

Strange you say typical shit Ubisoft when they have a ton of games that are wildly popular and highly rated. Maybe you just don't enjoy good games.

It's just the typical "Ubisoft is shit cuz I say so" that so many people spout. Usually accompanied by "all Ubisoft games are the same".

Played two hours and have already had two crashes. This is truly laughable. The game should have really reviewed even worse than it has, totally unfinished.

Here are my thoughts if anyone cares. Have only 10 hours. On a 2080 the game runs at max with raytracing reflections at medium and dlss on quality at around 50-80 fps, mostly 50 when driving so not of an issue. Quite surprised how well it runs. This is at 1440p. Weird daylight lighting but 75% of the time the game looks gorgeous as hell, especially when it rains and when its night. The cars and buildings are incredible. Character models are shit. Gameplay-wise, it's all over the place. It has no identity it's just wild and for some this may be a huge issue and for others could be quite fun. You are free to handle the missions and play as whomever you want and that freedom is nice. Sadly that freedom also has a negative impact, the story. You won;t give a shit about anyone you play which is kinda eh. Theres no character progression, no story development, you're just a group of hackers, stop the bad corporations and the other evil hacker group. The start is slow and annoying and overwhelming but once you get into it and see the beauty behind the chaos you might enjoy the game more. So far it's a 7 out of 10 but I wouldnt recommend it at full price. Just get it on sale/uplay+.

Can you recruit those soldiers that are "oppresing" everyone? Could you in theory have only dead sec soldiers as your team? I really couldn't play as everyday people cause that's what I am in real life anyway...

I've been able to recruit some of the lower ranking Albion employees. With the deep profiler upgrade you should be able to take it a little farther at least.

Albion employees meant as heavily armed soldiers or people in suits?:)

Solid 7-8/10.

Am i surprised? No. This series has never achieved greatness... People who have manufactured some degree of fandom for this series are some willful fools.

The security/police type. I am currently unsure if you can recruit the heavily armed ones but the deep profiler upgrade is supposed to make it possible to recruit people you normally wouldn't be able to.

I'll buy the upgrade tonight and report back.

Ubisoft games are never outstanding. They are always mediocre, repetitive, shallow. But rarely terrible.
WDL seems to be another example.

But still, i have most of their games. Had tons of fun playing breakpoint and wildlands.

I have recruited the heavily armed Military looking guys. Deep profile and then 1 or 2 recruiting missions and he'll be on your team. Still having a blast with this game, love how many different ways you can approach each mission.

Then one day you find out you've been missing out because you only go by reviews
I understand what you want to say but I had the same feeling after playing the last one. Ubisoft needs to change the philosophy on how they make games. The critics are just doing their work. The problem is internal, in the company.

I remember a different Ubisoft many years ago, making top notch games. Today it’s not the same Ubisoft. Just my 2 cents.

The BLM movement is about equality as, at the moment, black people are not always treated as equals.

It's the right wing that are against equality and I have no idea why they are. Don't you want the world to be a happier place for all?
The movement is, but unfortunately the main organisation, the BLM network (there are several organisation under the BLM flag) are "Trained Marxists" (tand Marxism isn't about equality but dismantling power structures.
There was a time when "Ubisoft" was not synonymous of mediocrity, it's sad now all they aim for is projects with zero passion. Now seems they have a template for a generic open world game and they just change characters and locations, but gameplay loops is always the same.
I don't know about that. They've made some good games, but I'm almost 50 and they've never stood out to me. They seem to only regurgitate ideas. That Beyond Good, one of their more unique titles at the time, has had a very hard time getting a sequel tells you something. They could easily bankroll that game themselves and might well be, but I think there are deeper forces at play -- mainly that they have an internal structure that prohibits innovation.

Got the game while subbing to Ubisoft connect +. It's basically the cheapest way to play the game right now. $15 per month, which gives you access to Watch Dogs Legion, and Valhalla when it comes out later this month. Not too bad to try it if you ask me.

Anyway, games runs fairly well on my laptop (Zephyrus S GX531GX). i7 9750h, 16gb of 2666mhz DDR4, RTX2080 max-q 90w.

Using the following settings:

Ultra Plus settings (car light shadows set to 4, ambient occlusion set to on) minus Digital Foundry optimized settings (geometry set to high instead of ultra, environment quality set to high instead of ultra, shadows set to high instead of ultra) while RT reflections are still set to ultra. Using DLSS quality mode @ 1440p and I'm getting a good 30-60fps experience, thanks to my G-synced monitor.

Gotta say though, DLSS really doesn't look that great in this game, well for 1440p anyway. It looks smudgy. Even while using the quality setting. You definitely get a much better picture quality when using native 1440p. Still, I'd rather get the RT effects with a smudgy screen than get the sharper screen without the RT effects though.

Environments in this game look gorgeous with all those RT effects. It's really a looker. On the other hand, like most already mentionned, the character faces suck.

All in all, for $15, it's worth it just to explore the environments. But I definitely won't keep the Ubi Connect Plus sub running past this month lol

Not offensively bad, but doesn't break the mold either. Ubisoft took their design philosophy from 12 year olds on the internet who think game length and sheer content = game quality. I just don't get it or their fan base. They are the definition of fast food gaming. Loads of calories and not at all fulfilling. Whatever though, I'll wait to get this one free too and then not even be arsed to redeem it because its fucking Watchdogs and Ubisoft.

Has anyone bought the PS4 version and done the free PS5 digital upgrade? Seems like the cheap way to go, how does it look and play?

I've bought the PS4 version and did the free upgrade to PS5 recently. The RT reflections definitely look a lot better, but it's still 30fps. The load times are significantly reduced though.

so my 2 cents on this game

1. It is a fantastic way to virtually tour London and I absolutely had a blast exploring old memories by revisiting them in the digital world, including a ride on London eye.

2. As a game, it is typical Ubisoft bloatware with a lot of busy work but with no substance or soul. I am just blasting through the main missions so I can see the ending and move on. I haven't completed the main story yet and really struggling to stay with this game any longer. "Play as anyone" did not click with me. I am around 75% done and still playing with that same character I started with and only switch to another one just for a specific skill and get back to the first character right after that.

I do not recommend you buy this game at full price. This could be a good experience for around $20. I liked the first two watchdogs games. I played this on PS5 and that definitely enhanced the experience with RTX and other performance upgrades.

I've been playing through it and it's an absolute blast. Definitely my favorite open world game. I'm really loving my characters and how every NPC is unique. The stealth aspect works really well and you can also blast your way through levels if that's your preference. So many ways to play though every situation. It really puts GTA and Cyberpunk to shame. Really funny too which is so rare in a video game. I'm baffled that it didn't get any game of the year awards or nominations. My favorite is still TLOU2 bit for open world fans this is the peak of the genre IMO.

I found the game to be really a lot of fun to play.
The problem is that you kind of have to "try" to find the fun in the game.
It is a game though so it feels weird to say that you have to PLAY it is a criticism.

When I checked out the reviews I was disappointed that a lot seem to just focus on the story and we are getting to the point now where a minimal or not great story is equal to a bad game.

It's not just a story telling medium there should be an appreciation of games that are just good to play and mess about with.
