First off, don’t say that Battlefield 2042 is a bad game, it’s sold out, but it is just for a certain type of gamer, 2042 might not be even ok for casual Battlefield gamers (weapon progression system that you must be patient for, the fact you’re doing objectives.) a lot of hard work was put into the game. Having a COD guy like Zampella is a big move depending if you liked COD2.

Zampella knows what he's doing. CoD 1, 2 and 4 are unbelievable. Titanfall 1 and 2 were both great as well.

But he also made Apex Legends which makes me nervous.

I'm not sure that even he can salvage this Santa Clause disaster.

But hopefully he treats BF like BF again and they bring back the actual war theming of the franchise.

Either way we probably wont see any kind of substantial change until at least the next game which is 3+ years away.

There are 4 Battlefield games in development...lol. Like 2022/23 for at least one of them ;). None of them are like traditional BF Games though. 2042 is supposed to be a live service that evolves over this gen. Dont expect another mainline BF for at least 5 years, 2042 will have to get a lot better for Zampella's plan to work. I'd be willing to bet Portal was his idea, but I have no proof.

Well, now that was fast.
I don't think he can't save it though.
The game is actually really fun, just a buggy mess. It wont be hard to save BF. Honestly fixing the bugs, adding in 64 variants of maps and nerfing specialist abilities or grouping them like classes would do it and allow them to keep selling skins like they want to.

How is a game "sold out"?

By your metrics, No Man's Sky was good at launch because it sold a lot. It wasn't a good game then.

very timed announcement, seems like EA makes its biggest push possible to lift Battlefield to old glory days.
And interesting that it’s Zampella, who created battlefields biggest rival.

Have you played Apex Legends?

Oh and I want to meet the guy on the team that though "22 weapons in our game is enough, right?"

I've been playing BF since I was 15 and 2042 isn't Battlefield. It's R6 Siege meet Warzone with a little bit of recent BF elements added in the mix. It is a shitty entry and months of bugfixes won't change the core of the game, which is NOT a Battlefield.
Enjoy it, but don't come with this statement.

The maps are horrible, that's one of the main reasons why i disliked this game.
The 64 player versions are better. The issue with 2042 is they went 128 players without really letting real players test it. 128 players sucks, and the maps they made to accommodate 128 don't feel right (too sparse). It doesn't help that the maps seem so barren in detail either (To be fair Orbital's vegetation is pretty nice).

I have put 100 hours into the game (level 68 I think?) and my number 1 complaint outside of the bugs is the barren, uninteresting maps. They don't even look like the stuff we saw in trailers or art. Its like they realized the game was going to run like shit and pulled as much stuff of the the maps as they could to help performance. This lead to zero cover, and vehicles destroying infantry. When you piss off infantry you have pissed off 70% of your player base. Ergo their current problems.

The poor performance is linked to 128 players as the game is hell on CPUs. They also don't really take advantage of new cpu tech as to not leave older CPUs behind. So, basically the performance in this game is stuck in this shitty middle ground where everyone has bad framerate. Magically if you go to portal and play on 64, or 32, player servers everything is hunky dory. DICE releasing the last gen versions of maps on PS5/XBSX/PC would really really help things across the board. Just let 128 players die until the average gamers CPU can handle it, and your level designers have a grasp on what would make a good 128 player map.

Agree. These games really rise and fall based on map pool. If the maps are weak, it just won’t be worth a damn no matter how good the mechanics are. And this is the worst group of maps in Battlefield history, and I’ve bought every single one of them.

Out of curiosity what makes it not battlefield other than specialists (which are honestly no different from classes) and cosmetics?

Battlefield is dead then. Long live Battlefield.

Did everyone get a survey about BF2042 today? It kinda covered what people are complaining about. Map size and specialists and more.

Not being able to properly manage your squad (that is a BIG one), no team leader, no commander, no specific roles, maps are shit, sound design is awful, no scoreboard, let's spawn vehicle everywhere.
And specialist ARE very different, they have super-powers (a wallhack, seriously...) and at the end of the day they can all heal/give ammo for example so no it is not the same as classes with very specific role.
Also 22 weapons, are you freaking KIDDING ME DICE???

This is just quickly summarized and what is coming in my head right now, if you want to know more you can look into one of those hundred review explaining why it sucks asses as a Battlefield game.

To start, what makes a BF game a BF game is; large player count multiplayer matches with combined arm gameplay that encourages team play. This game meets that definition.

Not being able to properly manage your squad (that is a BIG one)
This doesn't define a battlefield game, though I agree its dumb that it has been removed.

no team leader
Also doesn't define a battlefield game

, no commander
Also doesn't define a battlefield game.

, no specific roles
Game still has roles you are just able to cover them with more characters and use any gun.

, maps are shit
Wont argue here but that doesn't define a battlefield game as BF games have had a lot of shit maps.

, sound design is awful
I agree and yes, good sound design has been a battlefield staple...still, not having it doesn't mean this isn't a battlefield game

, no scoreboard
Again stupid but having a score board doesn't define a battlefield game.
, let's spawn vehicle everywhere.
Don't have a problem with this one and I welcome new mechanics

Crying about specialists is the dumbest thing. They are literally the same thing as classes but you can use whatever weapon you want. They are also more interesting than classes. That wall hack you talk about is one of the most useless abilities in the game lol, like, have you even played it? Nobody plays as Paik because the wall hack sucks.
Also 22 weapons, are you freaking KIDDING ME DICE???
The amount of guns could be better but doesn't a battlefield game make.

Yeah I have read it all. My 100 hours of experience with the game says it is 100% a battlefield game, just a poorly executed one.

LMAOOOOOOOO GG mate, I though you were genuinely asking but you just wanted to do... this? Are you trying to convince me, or yourself?

So the things I said doesn't define a BF game alone ok sure, and as I also stated they are just what comes to my mind like that. But combined this is what I'm expecting. And yeah large scale battle are part of that, sure.

But no, I can't agree on those specialist. This is clearly inspired by R6 Siege and it's awful. In earlier BF you pick a class depending on your playstyle and the weapons/gadgets you want to use.
Now you pick a super-power. The rest is the same for all specialist. I mean you are contradicting yourself in the same sentence: they are the same EXEPCT we can all use whatever weapon we want. That was THE PRINCIPLE of classes.

The amount of guns could be better but doesn't a battlefield game make.
I mean, it is a FPS. First Person Shooter. Guess with what we shoot? Guns !
So yeah, having ONLY 22 weapons on a game that is based around shooting people is bad. Like very, VERY bad.
And yeah I played it (want proof? I can give it to you if you want)

Again, enjoy it, that's fine! But don't come at me saying stuff like that please.

This video sums up my Battlefield 2042 experience as an infantry. This game's biggest problems are huge empty maps and overpowered air units. Halo big team battle feels more like BF than this one.

Good luck Vince, you sure have your work cut out for you here. This game is a steaming pile and I’m not confident anyone can save it as it is. They’ll need to look at what it is they want to achieve and how that can be done using the god awful framework that is 2042.

Oh and be sure to have yourself heard by completing the survey that went out for the game. Hopefully EA are listening and will approve changes based on feedback. I shit on BF2042 because it deserves it but I really want the game to end up good.

The old rivalry used to be Battlefield vs COD.
Primarily in the BF2/BF2142/BC2/BF3 era vs COD MW1/2.
I was always in the Battlefield camp. Die hard Battlefield fan - and hated COD MW1/2.
Give me the teamplay, classes, huge maps, and the tactics of BF in its heyday - over any of that quick, kill streak city, no teamplay COD crap.

Now youre telling me, as an old school Battlefield fan, im supposed to be excited for the guy who made the rival franchise that I hated so much to take over Battlefield?
Looks like the Battlefield franchise died with Battlefield 3.

Yeah, kinda odd. The BF community invests it's life into belittling the COD community, and vice versa, and now they're lauding the placement of COD's historical figurehead at the helm?

Industry wide we're witnessing a collapse of annualized franchises. While Battlefield is clearly the victim of some really badly managed development decisions, Call of Duty also saw huge losses this year without being especially broken, and even bedrock sports games like Madden and FIFA have been getting brutal receptions and flagging sales.

Even Ubisoft has already started to space out their games a little more, like Assassin's Creed is more or less bi-annual now, and Far Cry kind of has a tick-tock pattern with "real" and "expansion" games (and still doesn't launch every year).

I think it's time to start launching these huge games every other year, maybe with a big expansion in the off years to keep them alive and fresh.
