VGTech: Metro Exodus PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S

PS5 uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 2844x1600 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1792x1008. Pixel counts at 1792x1008 seem to be rare on PS5. PS5 uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution. Xbox Series X uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 2844x1600 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1920x1080. Pixel counts at 1920x1080 seem to be rare on Xbox Series X. Xbox Series X uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution. Below are some example pixel counts for certain scenes on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Note that these figures are approximate and not necessarily representative of how the entirety of a given area will render. Volga Level Opening Train Scene - PS5: 2560x1440, Series X: 2844x1600 Caspian Level Driving - PS5: 2560x1440, Series X: 2844x1600 Taiga Level Exploration - PS5: 2176x1224, Series X: 2400x1350 Taiga Level Forest Demanding Scene - PS5: 1792x1008, Series X: 1920x1080 Xbox Series S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 1621x912 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1056x594. Pixel counts at 1056x594 seem to be rare on Xbox Series S. Xbox Series S uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution.

Good to see that the nonsense that XSS runs at 594p was cleared up. A rare drop to that resolution to keep the framerate near 60fps with all the raytracing is a fine tradeoff for a $300 lower resolution console. It's impressive technology.

What do you mean by impressive technology? Metro’s game engine?

Meaningless if we look at how it performs 99.9% of the time. A “who gives a fuck” stat. There’s nothing to learn from it, and anybody who chooses one version over the other on account of that is a certified idiot.

Yep, it's an important stat to highlight if you're being honest, but at the same time it's meaningless since 99% of the time it performs as it's expected to.

It's important for VGTech/DF to share their findings because that's the type of content they produce, which is meant to help interested parties make informed decisions. And I get it, when the consoles launched it was going to be a wild party over these 0.1% differences in res/performance, but now it's just idiotic.

That this low res drop were just not really common should have been clear from day one. It is just that fanboys are what they are. Finding a rare scene (just like the 50fps drop) and claiming that the whole game would run like this.
Funny that no one of these fanboys claims that the ps5 can't even run @ 1080p the whole time. Yes it drops below, but not on a common bases.

But for the XSS I would still prefer a 30fps mode. But I guess the temporal upscaling wouldn't work that great with such a framerate.

This is why I always mention VGtech is the best. They point out resolution when they drop. They provide the whole table of data. They don't interject with their commentary and decide for us. They do a like for like extensive frame rate comparison. It suck that they are not half popular as DF. I guess because they are kinda boring when there are no commentary.

Humm, the colors look fine now on all of them, unlike that Digitial foundry one?
When you have some ghetto capture card, it will not read the meta data properly and this can happened. Also not sure which version were correct in DF, because XSX version is not that vashed out how DF presented it.

Impressive that a $300 console runs this game better than any other in its price range. Are there any $300 video cards that have raytracing? It's cool that the cost for entry into current gen has gotten lower.

Really that's impressive? So you must be super hyper mega impressed at how PS5DE is doing, holy smokes. A 399$ console going bat to bat with a 499$ console, while the 299$ console is performing way worse than the 399$ one. Shouldn't it be performing much closer to the 399$ console, considering you know, that it's really impressive tech?

The thing is performing exactly as advertised, and for the price it's not exactly offering more bang for buck than other options, tech wise. So yeah, I just don't understand how the technology behind the Series S is impressive when compared to other options. It's not exactly... punching above its weight.

He called it a technical marvel in another thread. I guess he just really likes his XSS.

Resolution way higher on Xbox Series X... :pie_raybans:

Comparing PS5 to XSX, i see very good images on both. XSX has highter native resolution, but both uses temporal reconstruction to 4k. The final result is very similar, bit better on XSX.

But when we compare to XSS, the difference is "way higher", very blurry on XSS compared to others. XSS has reconstruction to 1080p, 4x less pixels.

One of the XSX insider rings is washing the hell out of everything rn. Just left the program because of it

RTX 3060 is $320 MSRP. RTX 2060 was $299 last year.
How many RTX 3060s are at 300 bucks?

How many RTX 2060s are at $300?

Surely the hate against the XSS isn't so deep that you'd suggest people pay 2 to 3 times the cost of the console for just a lower end video card ALONE. It's ok to admit that the XSS is impressive for the price. This is going to be a great generation.

So you use MSRP for XSS and then accuse me of "hate" for using the MSRP for GPUs?
