From Vg Tech:

The version tested was 1.3114.44.0. The default video settings were used.

Timestamps:
00:00 - Xbox Series X 120fps
02:30 - Xbox Series S 120fps
05:00 - Xbox Series X 60fps
07:30 - Xbox Series S 60fps
10:00 - Xbox One X
12:30 - Xbox One S

The minor frame rate drops when running in the 60fps mode on the Xbox Series consoles were only found in some matches. The severity of the frame pacing issues on the Xbox One consoles varied without an obvious cause.

Xbox Series X in the 60fps mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2400x1800. Xbox Series X in the 60fps mode uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

Xbox Series X in the 120fps mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 2240x1440 and the lowest resolution found being 1920x1080. Native resolution pixel counts at 1920x1080 seem to be common on Xbox Series X in the 120fps mode. Xbox Series X in the 120fps mode uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

Xbox Series S in the 60fps mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 1920x1080 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1536x900. Native resolution pixel counts at 1920x1080 seem to be common on Xbox Series S when in the 60fps mode. Xbox Series S in the 60fps mode uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

Xbox Series S in the 120fps mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 1536x900 and the lowest resolution found being 960x540. Native resolution pixel counts seem to usually be below 1280x720 on Xbox Series S when in the 120fps mode. Xbox Series S in the 120fps mode uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution.

Xbox One X uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 2240x1800. Xbox One X uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

Xbox One S uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being 1920x1080 and the lowest resolution found being approximately 1120x900. Xbox One S uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution when rendering natively below this resolution.

The Xbox Series consoles appear to be using Variable Rate Shading which can result in some double width and double height pixels being visible in the frame.

Xbox Series X and Xbox One X have performance and quality modes available but there doesn't appear to be a difference between them at the moment. The 120fps modes are accessible by setting the Xbox Series consoles to output at 120hz.

Lows of 540p in 120fps for Series S. Ouch.

Glad I've got the tower of power to play this on.
If you have a tv able to play at 120 frames and you bought a Series S you're clearly doing something wrong.

It's a cool option to have but not the focus, most of the people that bought a Series S is playing on 1080p tvs and for them 60 frames are enough.

Anyway, as a Series S owner these results are great!

Exactly. You can connect the XSS to an inexpensive monitor to get 120 fps and the 540p is at brief times during gameplay. It is not like it runs at 540p continuously. It's so sad to see people spread misinformation about the most affordable current gen console. On the positive note it is getting yet another 120 fps title. There are consoles out there with fewer 120fps games than the hated on XSS amazingly.

Series S and X 60 fps mode looks rock solid. 60 fps basically all the time and no modes and systems have torn frames.
This is the mode most XSS users will run and it looks fantastic.

Definitely great starts. Hope last gen gets a 60 mode. Performance and quality will improve by release too so it'll be interesting to see how it all pans out

Off Topic but I've finally realised why Halo looks off to me in this footage... basically everything has a straight edge. The geometry on this map is practically all squares or rectangles.

Is there any 120hz mode on any game that actually keeps 120fps all the time? Within reason of a few dropped frames due to other factors.

I tried both Series versions and One X. There has to be a lower res option for One X that gives 60fps as they have a performance option in the menu, you don't want to be playing this at 30fps.
The Series consoles were both great and the reconstruction method is really good as Series S performed really well.

Those microstutters @ 30fps tho... They really trying to make One X | S people upgrade lol.
yep, I’m so glad that last Gen is clearly not the focus here and it shows that the majority of effort is going into the current Gen versions. I expect them to get the one x to 60fps somehow though.

But maybe the res is not the cause of the 30 fps on One X. If the CPU is the bottleneck dropping the res won't help at all. Didn't MS say Series X/S CPU performance was roughly x4 that of last gen machines?

I honestly was not expecting that. That is lower than Xbox One S...

Expected it to push 4x the framerate easily at One S resolution. I mean it's even using VRS on top.

Going from 1080p30 to 1080p120 for example, you need clearly more than 4 times the raw power.... The series X as example is going from 1080p to 1440p in 120fps mode... And the series S is less than 3 times the one S tflops... Add also the memory bandwidth in the equation, expecting to have this 4 times framerate at same resolution of One S is just dreaming from my point of view.

I'm the same man. For a first party title being developed for such a long time didn't expect to see lows like that, I expected a bit more.

I think yes that's the CPU which is the cause of this 30fps... And I expect the difference between Zen 2 and Jaguar to be bigger :messenger_winking_tongue:

Man people moaned months ago when it was confirmed the game was cross gen, and how the 'XB1 will hold back the game'. Now we see with this test that the XB1 is struggling, and the game is pushing the next gen machines harder than probably expected, and now people are moaning about that. In regards to XSS anyway.:messenger_neutral:

Besides you only have to look at some of the framerates PC players are getting to see that the game hasnt had much optimization done yet. In fact the devs said this build is months old and to expect framerate problems.

Please tell us more about these "unstable frames" on 'your' series x. This is your chance to show us what frauds vgtech are.
I mean even in this (recorded in 60fps from capture card) you can see

Surprised nobody else is talking about it. But it's obvious when I'm playing when the frame rate is dropping. I played 60hz mode cus that's all my monitor allows for

Video that starts exactly there, rather than actually gameplay and shows it dropping from 60? You could do better lol

I'd like to believe 343 will be able to get the Series X version at a stable 120fps or at least 90% of the time. I've turned on my notifications for Series X now because Halo looks to be back, so I need to get that console.

Come on... Even the One X has over 4x the GPU horsepower compared to One S... How do you think One X is able to hit 2160p in RDR2 while the One S is rendering at 864p?

Series S GPU is even more powerful than One X GPU. Ask SenjutsuSage SenjutsuSage and his friends Riky Riky DarkMage619 DarkMage619 , if you don't believe me. I'd have maybe agreed with you if the game wasn't tapping into RDNA 2's architectural improvements or its performance-saving feature like VRS, but VGT's analysis does indicate that VRS is in use here, it's also most likely tier 2.

Report me for console warring
“Xbox Series X and Xbox One X have performance and quality modes available but there doesn't appear to be a difference between them at the moment. The 120fps modes are accessible by setting the Xbox Series consoles to output at 120hz”

Does this mean One X will have 120hz?

Idk how else you want me to show you. You can see right there that the frame rate is dropping. Similar situation sometimes in actual gameplay.
It must be a bug at your part. This is still a technical preview. Others wont get the same issues as you.

I'm going to say no. It'll be 60fps.

Ok where's the gameplay video?

Considering we've seen fake framerate videos from fanboys and vgtech makes no mention, its on you to provide something of substance.

A video of it just chopping up like that (which i never encountered) is quite odd. And no one in the impression thread mentioned it.

So the Series S version drops to 900p at 60fps, and 540p 120fps. Damn.
"Xbox Series S in the 120fps mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest native resolution found being approximately 1536x900 and the lowest resolution found being 960x540. Native resolution pixel counts seem to usually be below 1280x720 on Xbox Series S when in the 120fps mode. Xbox Series S in the 120fps mode uses temporal upsampling to reconstruct a 1920x1080 resolution."

Damn what? It is a 1080p $300 budget console that has more 120fps games than some consoles that cost more. If you didn't know, graphics are what is compromised on this device. That said it has dynamic resolution scaling. It changes based on load. It doesn't stay at 900p or 540p what it is staying at is over 100 fps. For a modern competitive fps what is more important: resolution or framerate? Also have YOU played it at all?

Dam thought we were done with 900p, guess not, are xbox fans still saying xss is not going hold back next gen, if xss is struggling now, imagine in 3 years time lol.
I swear for a console that costs $300 it sure gets criticized a lot. Primarily by people who don't have the box and aren't affected by its existence. Thanks for your contribution lol.

As a PC gamer, from the video I'm impresses with his controller skills.
KB and Mouse for me on FPS's. I'm lousy with a controller...

Wasn't Returnal upscaled from 1080p on the Ps5? Interesting all the trolling over the S.

Damn, I'm glad I'll be playing this on PC and not Series S 😁.

And don't be so triggered, dips to 540p are bound to be highlighted in 2021.
