Holy fuck these california guys really ruined playstation

What brings me to Playstation is Japan game

Game like soul calibur, resident evil, chrono cross, legend of dragoon, silent hill, demon souls, shadow of collosus, last guardian, bloodborne etc

If theyre done with japan im done with playstation

The rumours that all ps first party game will slowly heading to PC also makes me less interested to invest in their system

PC + Nintendo here i come

More like Japan doesn't care about Sony. If Japan Studio was raking in the dough do you really think they'd be shutting it down? You people act like Sony is just purposely hating on Japan or something, it's so bizarre.

Exactly, Japan simply moved away from home consoles and there's no reason to fight for that market anymore. But that doesn't mean you can't have a Japanese studio making games aimed for western audiences tho.

Wow, this is embarrassing.

Go take a look at that list of games. Only 4-5 made by JApan studio and more than a decade ago. Sony is still the place to play JRPG's, fighting games.

more like japanese market hate consoles

instead play gacha anime trash. Sony isnt charity they made a lot of japanese games and none of them sold.
Even most successful ones like bloodborne are at 2M very low.

gravity rush soul sacrificie knack puppeter the last guardian rain list goes on forever.

All 200-300k niche games.

Sony in business of selling atleast 5M games these days
The Switch begs to differ.

And since when 2M is "very low"? I don't get it.

They could have kept producing japanese games with lower budgets and still have that niche.

Now they basically gifted Japan to Nintendo and it's a dumb move.

That's the truth. They made OK games maybe occassionaly goodish but never great as Nintendo.

Also no stupid ass they didnt give to nintendo. As long as nintendo consoles are underpowered big japan games will always come to playstation.

Sony will instead use all money to get 3rd party exclusives. just like we see ff16 and ff7remake sf5 etc
I bet monster hunter world 2 will have some timed exclusivity as well

That studio has barely done anything worth mentioning.
A few supporting roles and several mediocre and/or financially unsuccessful releases.

But hey, it`s Sony -related so an everyday economic business decision must be "special" in this case........

It's so short sighted culling all the niche game development and focussing on the big cinematic AAAs. Sure they don't make the big money that the likes of Uncharted, GOW and LOU do but they still do something really valuable.

One of the reasons why PS4 has such a behemoth of a userbase is because they reached a critical mass of players and then it snowballed. Most of the casuals who make up the majority of the userbase will have got one because its the machine their friends have. If you trace this line back it ends up at that geeky hardcore gamer friend who got one first. The reason why that guy got a PS4 in the first place was because of the niche games that Sony seem so happy to stop making.

Cut off the lower selling niche games and you potentially make gamer zero buy something else instead.

I‘m excited to see how far he goes, and how many here will keep defending the choices.

It seems shutting down Japan, went by with little backlash.
Gravity Rush 2 arrived in Japan and it was in 1st place in the top selling of best game arrived in 2017 in its premiere that even took the place from Yoshi wolly World N3DS.

They didn't give it enough marketing and that was a serious mistake.

Is not a dramática nonsense. Its the truth.

And I still saying it since 3 years ago
Was that about the time you started listening to Qanon podcasts and upped your daily LSD intake?
In all seriousness though, it´s massive overdramatization on your part and you should probably do a social media cold turkey if that is your definition of "truth".

So first party studios funding will be allocated for securing third party deal

Who runs this company now?

Oh i remember

Instead of more first party game expect more moneyhat deals like Destiny, Call of Duty and Avengers

I used to support Sony for its Japanese market, but since the announcement that was given in Japan Studio, I lost them... as same as Xbox .

It is obvious since E3 2016 clues were given about this abominable situation, since it did not show a trailer for Gravity rush 2 when it was ready and instead they made a teaser with a mediocre game such as Days Gone.

And the worst thing is that they put another mediocre game as No mans sky in the E3

i find the irony some shrug this off as business. Sony wws has long reputed as more than just business. just because SCEJ did not make a profit hit then, dont mean they wont this gen. every gen has always given birth to new flavors.

Jim herman basically shut the doors to them.

in the article, it was almost mentioned that SCE high ups impressed upon scej to follow their west teams and design similar narrative block busters to get the funding...

idk, some how Sony wws wants to focus deep into 'business'....

dollar bet Shu will be the next high value target to 'retire' from his post at Sony. he is the only SCE guy still around, i know and i respect. i can feel the hurt he's going through.

also i wonder how cerny feels seeing his knack friends getting downsized by the 'business'..

who the f is herman guy anyway, what a huge promo he gotten

First sign California messing with Japan is by permanently replacing O button as confirmation button with X ( In Japan and Asia O is the confirm button not X ) and now theyre forcing it to them

Along with the growing political corectness influence going on in sony western studio like Naughty Dog...things are not looking good for playstation...

If that were the case Playstation would not be putting so much money into the Pro tour's for fighting games. They put millions into capcom pro tour, and continue with promoting/sponsoring fighting game events. If that were the case all pro fighters would be playing on powerful laptop/PC's and not PS4.

But thats not the case. Not all fighting games have cross play. So the bigger player pool is on Playstation which it has been for an entire gen.

It is still the place to Flay currently Final fantasy. FF7R is still not announced for PC. FF XVI is also slated for PS5 exclusivity which means you wont see it on PC for over a year after it's release.

If your willing to wait then yes PC is the place to play everything. I own a really good gaming PC, but I play all Yakuza titles, FF, and fighters on my Playstation unless I get them really cheap on PC. The interface, community player pools are much better.

This is rich coming from you dude, you have been trolling every thread because of the juicy news on Sony restructuring a iconic studio. You are literally going off of your own bullshit and not what is being talked about by multiple sources:

Here are the facts:

  • Japan Studio has not had a hit in almost over a decade
  • Even with co-developed From Software projects like Demon Souls it did not sell gang busters and catch on until sequels later(not talking about remake)
  • they had tons of internal development issues during PS3/PSP/PSVITA days.
  • Was one of the reasons shue took a different position, he use to oversee a lot from Japan studio
  • team asobi is successful and now will continue to run the rest of japan studio
  • people involved in collaboration projects like Demon Souls remake with bluepoint will continue under a larger umbrella meaning remakes with Japan studio/Sony studio branding will continue to an extent.
  • Shue will probably retire for sure, but he is doing what he loves currently
Show me another company that was able to adapt their studios? Microsoft has mismanaged multiple and closed just as many, some of which had more success stories than Japan studio in PS3 era.
Nintendo uses the same people, and has not expanded and thats why they take so long with their games and use like SOny external developers for a lot of titles.

Have to get over the fact that people are not buying the type of games Japan studio was making, and a lot of those titles now are being emulated in Indie games.
Dude I get it, your having a field day, but at least be honest about what your trying to do and stop trying to inject your bullshit in what is actually happening.

PS3 era had giant restructuring,

Japan Studio with all of their money pits, was unchanged for almost 2 decades, so it was only a matter of time they either adapted to make something that could be better marketed, or keep making obscured games with insane budgets.

To your last comment Herman was the lead/head over at Gureilla Games, and was responsible for Horizon and getting that studio into the shape it is now.

These are not first party games and there's a big difference.

Why lose a market share for no reason? They'll soon run out of exclusives and big AAA are not sustainable in the long run.

Also, playstation was great back in the day because it was japan driven and your "obscure shit" has always been praised as masterpiece material by fanboys.

As I mentioned before, dark times are coming for the Playstation brand.

Until Jim Ryan is fired, Playstation is going to get worse

You have No clue what your talking about.

It's not like Jim ryan made all these decisions by himself, its not like the same people behind the scenes including him were not part of the PS4/PS3 era.

This rhetoric that one man is responsible for a studio that was untouched for 3-4 gens and now is getting restructured is some kind of end of days shit?

Honestly what would you do if you saw games similar to titles Japan studio has made being made by indie developers and third party? You would give the teams that made Last guardian and gravity rush series more money and more funding to burn through money and have one new game and a title that took 2 gens to release?

What do you do when you have all these partners from renowned Japanese developers already working with you for titles that Japan studios produced?

Shuhei Yoshida wouldn't have allowed to do this kind of stupid thing.

Blame it on Jim Ryan because he was never interested in marketing in America, otherwise in Playstation Japan where they did a good job, Gravity rush 2 was in the top 1 as best selling game .

How dare that he not give him a spaceat e3 2016 of just 2 minutes for Gravity rush 2?

Support projects like No Mans Sky instead of Japan Studio games, how is it possible?

As I said before, Japan Studio was Sony's Nintendo .... Jim Ryan killed it.

You need to re-read that article. gravity rush 2 was featured heavily in PSX, pushed hard for it's Jan-Feb release in 2017. It did not sell, neither did the remaster which Sony brought out in physical, no one cared about it. I own both, no one bought the last gaurdian and that game was a trainwreck development wise. Issue stems from Japan studios not changing to meet the needs of a wide audience which was changing over in japan. They should have made something that would appeal to broader audience. And shue was put on indie since he loves that indie does the things Japan studio use to do project wise. Japan studio has had a long, hard timeline in making games on time, but also making something Sony can sell outside of Japan.

They should of just collaborated more but people like Ueda want these artistic masterpieces, and unfortunatly they take too much money, and dont sell. And Indie are now filling that void, i mean look at Death stranding. Game did alright from what I know but it didn't blow anybody's socks off sales wise, and that is from a more renowned person/studio that has a larger online conversational presence.

Issue is Japan studio is not as unique as they use to be, there is too much competition by ex developers with some of who use to work in similar studios. if indie didn't exist that article would be more relevant in what SHue is saying.

But even when they tried bringing patapon, parappa back very little fan fair even gave a shit. Even with everybody's golf, which was a collab game.

I wish we lived in a business where you could have all the studios you started with from the beginning. But thats not the case. All this blame on Jim ryan/ Herman who literally have been with the company for a long ass time is moronic. And in herman's case been making video games for a long ass time.

Herman knew when to move on from killzone, and look where the studio is now? Regardless if you care or not it was the right business move. Same with Insomniac, Sucker punch.
At the end of the day regardless if you want your games to stand out and be this water cooler of awesome idea's and uniqueness you still have to be able to make a profit at some point. And outside of Asobi team Japan studios internally developed titles have not for a long ass time.

You have no clue how this industry works. Ands also no clue how much funding Sony does with external studios who are making the games Japan studio use to make. If a indie developer with 30 people or less is making something very artistic like Solar ash which reminds me of the weird stuff gravity rush did, and is doing it for a fraction of what it cost Japan studio to make. WHy not make a deal with them in getting that game on your platform? It's safer, adds value to your platform and helps out the developer?

Your not burning millions of internal development money hoping the game comes out on time, and sells a certain amount to recoup it's costs.

Thats not a smart way to make games. There's a reason so many studio closed. Adapt or die.

Japan studio didn't adapt.

There's also the very significant fact that without a handheld division to support, obviously a big part of SCEJ's remit, they don't really need to be as big as they are.

And honestly, assuming funding remains the same this is arguably a good thing. Devs who were shackled inside Sony's corporate greenlighting system are now free to go their own way, chances are high that they will still serve Sony hardware and are still just as able to get Sony to support their projects monetarily and in terms of marketing/publishing.

The remit is still going to be for Japan Studio to provide x titles over y amount of time with z amount of money. If the internal system isn't producing results, why not reallocate the funding to external developers?

Yup. Soon later this year were going to see more external games with World Wide studios attached to it possibly ex-Japan studio people overseeing them. Then we will see people take back what they said. More money is being put back into classic games everyone loves so much.

I mean pretty sure Ueda's next game is Exclusive to sony with a PC option. Why would he take it somewhere else? People here are being way too emotional over this. There is silver lining.

This part in the article...read it..

Sources tell VGC that Japan Studio has just not been profitable enough, and there were disagreements over the direction of the studio. Japan Studio wanted to create games for the Japanese market first with global appeal, while PlayStation reportedly wanted Japan Studio to work on global hits, similar to its North American and European first-party teams.

I get that it is business but laying off most of Japan studio is harsh af. What makes you think they worked with insane budget? The Bloomberg piece said the opposite. JS could have pitched many games ideas that did not get the pass. I would rather allow them to make the games and put it as PS+ titles.
Seems Sony WWS has become a harsh place to work if all they wanted are 'business' results.

I have not played HZD, but GG other games were generic run of mill. I do not respect herman for the direction he is taking SCE.

This also shines a new light on their expansion into movies/TV, 1 or 2 films is ok, but IIRC they planning for 7 or more. Not saying its a bad thing or wont net them more money. But the direction is 180 from 4theplayers. It just feels like forthebusiness.
My intuition has been right, i posted about Bloodborne guys leaving, and some of you brushed me off as overthinking it, then hours later, bam this thread! :messenger_weary:

Imo this video is pretty much peak 4theplayers. Since then its musical chairs happening at SCE.
Andrew House, guy speaks fluent japanese, makes a frickin video, welcoming Kojima onboard. Gives him the engine and all the resources to make a brand new game. Not all Sony fans like Kojima, but there are many who do. Sales 'business' be damned.
Sadly, after this thread news, it adds more weight about the new SCE rulers are indeed unsatisfied with the 'business' side of DS and its been so quiet at Kojipro... did they get the JS sidelining too?

Yup. Soon later this year were going to see more external games with World Wide studios attached to it possibly ex-Japan studio people overseeing them. Then we will see people take back what they said. More money is being put back into classic games everyone loves so much.

Well, you still get people bemoaning the closure of Studio Liverpool despite that place being horribly dysfunctional and ill-managed for over a decade!

This part in the article...read it..

You are literally using this as fuel as you did in a previous thread.

If you actually thought about that quote :Japan Studio has just not been profitable enough, and there were disagreements over the direction of the studio. Japan Studio wanted to create games for the Japanese market first with global appeal, while PlayStation reportedly wanted Japan Studio to work on global hits, similar to its North American and European first-party teams.

They tried that with gravity rush, and every body's golf which did alright but not close to how hotshots use to sell. Nothing in that quote says they could not make a game that was a global hit with Japanese design philosophy. But it took too long to get to that equation. They hardly made anything in PS3 era, then continued on projects like Gravity rush and Last guardian throughout ps4, with bringing back patapon and the likes having no effect.

You are using these latest news bites to make a narrative that suits your " Sony is doomed" which you did in another thread. I'm saying that this has been a long time coming. If everyone has found success and you have not? Doesn't that make you look at whats happening? Why did they leave team Asobi alone then? They promoted them? ANd they have people that have been with Japan studio for along time in on that team. So obviously if one team is making games that are doing well that are kind of niche which astrobot is, then why can't the rest?

Doesn't that seem to be a similar issue Nintendo has been having with some of their internal developers? Retro has been non-existent. And now are still trying to make metroid after it was rebooted from an external studio, and that was in 2019, they still are hiring story writers?

Japan studio is not being shit down it's just changing into something else. With all the external developed projects with From Software, bluepoint and other japanes studios I see not issue.
MS should have done this with Lion head studios instead of forcing them to make Kinect games. Same with RARE, that studio needs restructure.

Death Stranding did fine, and is getting a new PS5 version with new story content. Koji-pro will continue his relationship no doubt with Sony.

At this point with you bringing up random shit with koji pro I know now your just talking out your ass and trying to create a narrative to fuel "Sony is doomed" threads.

To ignore you go.

2016...that Andrew House video was shot in 2015...the time checks out....

If you noticed, House was global ceo of SCE.... since then, it has become SIE....
Jim was head of global sales and marketing in 2016...noticed how SIE communication with the players dropped off the cliff since that 2015 video?

Im not saying Sony is doomed, im just critical of their direction.

From the article, JS is virtually gone....

According to sources, VGC is reporting that a “vast majority” of Japan Studio’s developers have been laid off after their annual contracts weren’t renewed. What remains at the studio are the localization and business staff; as well as ASOBI Team, the developer of the Astro Bot series. ASOBI will reportedly continue to make games as a standalone studio.

Correct, but external developed projects now are under larger part of the global studios umbrella, that they over saw like demons souls remake.

They will probably consolidate Japan studio into Localization only for external developed games which is what they have been doing for SOTC, and Demon Souls remake and supposedly MGS remake.

PC + Nintendo here i come
Lol, no. They aren't done with Japan.

-They will continue making 1st party Japanese games at Japan Studio and Polyphony.
-They will continue making 2nd party Japanese games as the ones they had in PS4 developed by studios like From Software, Clap Hanz, Acquire or Q-Games.
-They will continue having 3rd party Japanese exclusives as the ones they had in PS4 from Square-Enix, Sega, Capcom, Atlus, Konami, SNK, Bandai-Namco, Koei-Tecmo, Platinum and basically any meaningful Japanese console publisher or developer who isn't Nintendo.
-They will continue having 3rd party Japanese multiplatform games from basically any meaningful Japanese console publisher or developer who isn't Nintendo, and in many cases will have marketing deals or similar.

In fact, they recently signed a deal with Kadokawa Games (Japanese developer with a long tradition of PlayStation exclusive games and owner of From Software and Spike Chunsoft) and CyGames (the Granblue Fantasy Versus and Relink, in addition to Project Awakening) to help them reach a bigger global gaming market.

They just restructured an almost 30 years old studio who wasn't profitable with many games sizing it down to focus on its team that was more successful (Team Asobi), which became bigger with this change.

They are also centralizing publishing related divisions like external production, software localization, and IP management were repeated in several studios to avoid being redundant and to optimize work by handling it globally in the same way for all the studios.

Im not saying Sony is doomed, im just critical of their direction.

From the article, JS is virtually gone....

Everyone, calm down. Closures like this opened the door for expenditures that really matter, like securing Spider-Man exclusivity in Avengers.

No. Sony said to IGN (read the updated OP) they re-organized (yes, scaling it down instead of shutting down) Japan Studio to focus its internal development around Team Asobi, which now will be bigger.

External production, software localization, and IP management now will be centralized as part of global functions of PlayStation Studios as happened in the other studios like Sony Santa Monica, instead of -as they were doing until now- being handled separatedly at each studio. Basically they optimize and avoid redundancy on these global operations.

Wow, this is embarrassing.

Go take a look at that list of games. Only 4-5 made by JApan studio and more than a decade ago. Sony is still the place to play JRPG's, fighting games.
Here you have the (complete?) list of Japan Studio (both 1st and 2nd party): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan_Studio

And here you have the (complete?) list of PS4 exclusives, featuring a ton of Japanese 3rd party exclusives:

2016...that Andrew House video was shot in 2015...the time checks out....

If you noticed, House was global ceo of SCE.... since then, it has become SIE....
Jim was head of global sales and marketing in 2016...noticed how SIE communication with the players dropped off the cliff since that 2015 video?
Since then they became the best performing console platform holder in gaming history, which means they now do a better job on communicating to the players and offering more appealing products and services with a better, more successful strategy.

You need to read more. Which is not changing. That was all done with external partners with Collaboration from Japan Studio. WHich is still happening but they are incorporating that sort of stuff under a different division. Japan studio is still going to over see external developed projects like Demons souls from Bluepoint. just that it is now part of the bigger part of their external partner program. So not just people from Japan studio it's now under one umbrellas of Playstation Studios.
I only NEED to stop myself from verbally destroying you and risk getting banned.

I know that. From Software and others were involved. I didn't think I had to mention it. It doesn't diminish their role nor the tragedy of this "winding down". Saying it's happening to everybody is more alarming...not less.

Sony will instead use all money to get 3rd party exclusives. just like we see ff16 and ff7remake sf5 etc
I bet monster hunter world 2 will have some timed exclusivity as well
Is that supposed to be a good thing now it’s Sony we’re talking about?

Ueda is still around with genDesign so his next work will be multi-platform.

I'm not trying to knock Media Molecule and I applaud Sony or supporting their creativity, but I can't imagine Dreams was a profitable venture. I just don't understand why the can't invest in more mid-tier development ventures and expect modest returns. They are really devaluing the brand in my eyes.
Talking about media molecule...dreams is somewhat the last Last Guardia type of game, they might be next on the hit list.

Out of all games, Dreams is the game most suitable for PC. PC is the platform with m/kb and tons of modders and gamers who like to build shit. If Dreams was on PC I wouldnt be surprised it PC sales were 5x what PS4 are.

And there is no way anyone can put up the defence that Dreams is a cornerstone franchise that oozes exclusivity and PS gamers flocking to PS for Dreams.

It also was made with a fraction of the size that projects over at Japan studio had. Media molecule is really small, at total they are 50 employee's. So almost a large indie studio. Costs were not as high for that studio as they were with Japan studio. Especially when you look at sales of their output.

Would not be surprised if we hear about Dreams coming to PC with VR support like vive.

Absolutely wild that fanboyism reaches such heights as to defend this decision to basically shutter Japan Studio, one of the internal outfits most associated with the Playstation brand since the Kutaragi days. Their partnerships with smaller studios such as Media.Vision, Matrix, etc., gave us the Wild Arms franchise, Alundra, to say nothing of Team Ico.

You don't have to be an MBA or a PhD in brand management to understand that having that kind of product development talent in your table is not a negligible asset. Shadow of the Colossus was featured in motion pictures about mourning and loss, ICO was used by child therapists, regardless of units moved, those games helped Sony establish its own bona fides as a serious platform holder.

I have no doubt, none whatsoever, that this would not happen if SCEI (now SIE) were still based in Minato instead of San Mateo, California. Playstation has been, for all intents and purposes, an American company for a while.

Imagine if Nintendo had "restructured" Intelligent Systems or HAL after a string of failures on their part. Smash Bros (5.5 million on the Nintendo 64) or Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2.5 million units sold), etc. etc. would never have seen the light of day.

PS5 is called Gaijinstation for good reason

Forcing japan and asia region confirm button from O to X is a prime examples to this

Only japanese gaming company left is Nintendo and i hope Nintendo wont follow westernization like Playstation

Now we have to deal with neil druckman game of political corectness

All this madness started with Jim Ryan..he probably think playstation japanese heritage is a joke and laughed at it...

Wind it down, let a third-party publisher buy them and get their games on all platforms.

Dreams is a project that could have happened only under Sony.

Now, we can discuss if it would have ever been possible under current Sony. And my money is on "no way in hell".

It's funny how the writing has been on the wall since Jim got the promotion, it's like, you could see the moving cogs but the denial was too hard since there was momentum on how good PS was.
It's gonna be fun to do a post mortem at the end of the PS5. Everything that people associate with good PS tittles and initiatives are left overs of the previous management team and the first news that we can associate with the new people pulling the string are only bad news after bad news, what a shit show.

Hulst, lol.
