The version tested was 1.000.000. Motion blur was enabled.

Timestamps:
00:00 - Performance Mode
12:00 - 40fps Quality Mode
24:00 - 40fps Ray Tracing Mode
36:00 - 30fps Quality Mode
48:00 - 30fps Ray Tracing Mode

PS5 in performance mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2560x1440 and the lowest resolution found being 1280x720. In performance mode PS5 seems to usually render below 1920x1080. PS5 in performance mode seems to be using FSR 2 to reconstruct a 2560x1440 resolution when rendering below this resolution.

PS5 in the 30fps quality mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 3840x2160 and the lowest resolution found being 1920x1080. The rendering resolution changes often in the 30fps quality mode and seems to rarely reach 3840x2160. PS5 in quality mode seems to be using FSR 2 to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution when rendering below this resolution.

PS5 in the 40fps quality mode seems to have the same resolution setup as the 30fps quality mode but the average rendering resolution is lower as the DRS system is targeting 40fps. The 40fps quality mode seems to render at 1920x1080 much more often than the 30fps quality mode does.

PS5 in the 30fps ray tracing mode uses a dynamic resolution with the highest resolution found being 2880x1620 and the lowest resolution found being 1472x828. The rendering resolution changes often in the 30fps ray tracing mode and seems to rarely reach 2880x1620 and rarely drop to 1472x828. PS5 in the ray tracing mode seems to be using FSR 2 to reconstruct a 3840x2160 resolution.

PS5 in the 40fps ray tracing mode has the same resolution setup as the 30fps ray tracing mode but the average rendering resolution is lower as the DRS system is targeting 40fps. The resolution drops to 1472x828 more often in the 40fps ray tracing mode than in the 30fps ray tracing mode.

The 40fps modes are accessed by enabling 120 Hz Display Mode in the game's display settings. Note that the 40fps mode footage had to be captured at 1440p due to capture card limitations and as a consequence will look worse than it will on a 4K 120Hz display.

Quality mode has some improvements to draw distance compared to the other two modes https://bit.ly/3hit0Vr

Ray tracing mode seems to add hybrid ray traced shadows (more info here https://youtu.be/MlTohmB4Gh4?t=1005 ) and improves ambient occlusion https://bit.ly/3hgmMFt

I thought ray tracing mode adds basically nothing to the image. Quality mode at 40fps isn't too bad but still ended up settling for performance mode since it plays much better

Devs should always include an everything on and unlocked mode for when next gen or pro systems come.

Is the PS5 really that underpowered, or is this just a poorly optimized game?
This resolutions is this low because of ray tracing . Ps5 or Xbox for that matter can’t do proper ray tracing. Hell AMD newest gpu can barely do proper ray tracing at decent frames ( with FSR, without it you are out of luck)

But even without, the game is dipping as low as full HD. The game is not poorly optimized and lots of marketing and push behind it. But it’s a real next game when it comes to all those effects and zero loading etc

It's a 40fps ray-tracing mode. The ess wouldn't even have that mode.

not in such a terribly made game no.

the RT effects in this are barely even recognisable as RT effects.

Fortnite on Series S runs at 60fps and has better RT than this 🤣

also it drop to that resolution in the 30fps mode too, it's not just the 40fps mode

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
I played the demo, im not sure why the game runs poorly, the game doesnt even look that good, some texture look like ps4 texture.

I suspect is their game engine called luminous or something? Game looks kinda pixelated too

this "real" next gen game looks an awful lot like an ugly PS4 game tho... just sayin...

hell, the water in it actually is worse looking than PS3 level water

Pretty weak showing for the studio and their engine.
I'd get these resolutions if the game looked really impressive but aside from having a lot of particles almost everything about it looks last gen

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Lows of 720p with these subpar visuals, and still not able to get a lock in the performance mode.

oof.

This looks like it's getting Square's second unit treatment.

It’s not unreal engine and it’s an in house one. Their focus if you noticed in this game is the amazing magic spells and fast movement in the world at the same time. Try that on an unreal engine and it will choke to single digit frames.

Each engine has its priorities I guess

that doesn't excuse how ugly the game is.

the demo doesn't seem very fast... like, sure it's faster than you can usually sprint in a game but vehicles exist in other open world games that go way faster than you can in Forespoken.

you really should play Fortnite if you think that's true, as with vehicles and the new gravity hammer in chapter 4 you can fly through the map at really high speeds, all at 60fps with raytracing and nanite geometry.

true, and it happens that this game with this engine looks like ass and runs really badly outside of a few decently looking magic attacks, which look cool stylistically and not so much technically.

Luminous was always a pretty heavy engine.
Wasnt it also brutal even in the FFXV benchmark.

Like im pretty sure when FFXV came out you needed a 1080Ti (the most powerful card at the time) to actually get a reasonably playable 1440p60 at high settings.

At 4K I believe not even the Titan V could net you a stable 60.

So im not particularly shocked its still a heavy engine now.

1472x828…. Lol

A little more hit and we have our 720p ps5 game.

Yeah those next Gen games will need a ps5 pro / series x pro.

Ps5 is looking like a fat ps4 with this game.
It's the engine... That SE engine has always been bad and it seems it's still bad.

if the trailer is anything to go by, yeah it's fast for an open-world game. ( at least to me lol )

also, you cant compare a cartoonish game with horrible character models and a cartoonish world to this man...

Also. you play fortnite. we are no longer friends lol j/k

Square Enix Engine is one of the best engines IMO when it comes to lighting and special effects. ever since it was unvealed with Agni's Philosophy running on GTX 980 and it was impressive.

and it was also impressive with Final Fantasy 15 and again in this game.

their engine - like I said before - is about maximum spells / magic effects with huge monsters on screen, etc. which is what fits SE games in general.

it's not to say it's a superior engine or anything to unreal 5. it has its ups and downs. but it is an ambitious engine, to say the least.

Luminous was always a pretty heavy engine.

Exactly. it's an amazing engine but its not for peasant consoles lol

Oof!

PS5 better stick to cross gen PS4 games.

Is the PS5 really that underpowered, or is this just a poorly optimized game?
Comments like these are so transparent lol.

Forbidden West looks better in every way, it's not an empty open world game, it's a lot more demanding and it runs incredibly well in all resolution modes.

This is the same team that released FFXV. That game released an unnoptimized mess in every platform and this one will be the same. That's all.

It's been 2 years guys. There's already exclusive PS5 games and all run great.

Isn't that how DLSS and FSR work?

upscaling from 720p to 4k TV ? not even DLSS which is superior to FSR will manage to get you a clean screen.

Honestly, some games should avoid ray tracing. not every game needs to have ray tracing on consoles. like, no one will judge your game when it doesn't have ray tracing. however, everyone will judge your game when it runs a banana resolution.

it's not even nice ray tracing. It's low-quality stuff that it's better turned off anyway !.

Probably.

Just thinking of all those peeps that type stuff like "sub 1080p in 2022" "720p in 2022" they gotta be having heart attacks right now.

Pour one out for them.

It's an exclusive ps5 game and the main focus platform for years, there's no excuse for this one.
The resolutions (lowest) are kinda shit especially since it's not locking the fps, though it is a demo. The good news is FSR 2+ and other decent AA tech are appearing in more games so it is less of a problem for all of the consoles.
The worry here is it is out in a month, how old is this build? Will the framerate be fixed? And is the game any good? :messenger_persevering:
