Valve says it hasn't found a game Steam Deck can't handle

Even 2021 games are running no problem.

In a new video with IGN, Valve talked a bit more about the technical capabilities of the Steam Deck and its AMD processor, stating that even games releasing this year "have been running without issues."

"We've been looking at various games the past few years in the back catalog, but the real test for us was games that were coming out last year. They just couldn't really run very well on the previous types of prototypes and architectures we were testing," Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said. "This is the first time we've achieved the level of performance that is required to really run the latest generation of games without problems. All the games we wanted to be playable is, really, the entire Steam library. We haven't really found something we could throw at this device that it couldn't handle."

Griffais said that current PC gaming trends that favor high frame rate performance and high resolutions help the Steam Deck, because it means games will easily scale down to its lower resolution 800p display and run at at least 30Hz.

Valve reiterated that it's using a brand new AMD CPU and GPU, along with LPDDR5 RAM, an especially fast new memory standard. "We might actually be one of the first products to showcase this memory technology," said Valve hardware engineer Yazan Aldehayyat. "That gives a lot of future proofing, especially since we're not the only people with this architecture. Any optimization that game developers make for this new architecture will carry forth to benefit us as well."

The architecture Alderhayyat's referencing is the one-two punch of AMD's Zen 2 found in Ryzen 3000 CPUs and RDNA 2 in the Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. (you can read a deeper dive into the Steam Deck's hardware here).

"It wasn't until now that we felt the entire Steam catalog is available to people who have this device," Alderhayyat said. "That's when we knew we had a product that is going to deliver the experience we're looking for."

Thats good news then.

I'm more curious about exactly what performance we're talking about or if theres gonna be caviats(like removing everything from the game until it becomes barelly a thing).

I have zero interest in handhelds, but it'll be fun to see reviews and if it delivers.
See how it handles games that are "impossible ports" on the Switch.

But, is the master race that laughs at 60fps going to settle for 30? That'll be the day.

The fact that this thing can even run control which runs at single digits on PS4 is straight up amazing.

It goes even lower then that rofl

The deck is the first handheld that breaks the barrier from not being able to run current gen AAA titles to running current gen AAA titles. its pretty amazing to see after all those decades of chasing it we finally arrived there and the future will only be better. something i always wanted.

I think this is coming out 2.5 years too early.

They should have let mobile technology advance for another 2.5 years. This generation seems like it will be longer than usual due to corona causing delays. I expect a 7 year generation minimum. In 2 years Valve would have seen more next gen only games being released like Starfield and could have made it more future proof for next gen only games. In the future DLSS would have improved and perhaps been available for mobile devices. I guess I can see Valve releasing a successor to Steam Deck in 3 years that can handle next gen only games.

One day people won't just mindlessly believe PR from companies about their own devices. One day, but not today apparently.

I imagine that Flight Sim will look like River Raid on the Deck.

Besides that people test weaker apu's and what u see there seems completely legit.

Of course, PC game scaling is amazing, most games can scale from hardware requiring the PSU direct connect to a nearby nuclear power plant to all the way down to a potato. This argument is valid also for even shit integrated GPUs. Sacrifices have to be made, but it can run it.

Anyone who is accustomed to the Switch or has heard the buzz but has questioned the library will give this a look.
Buying a Deck.

I believe them, the Deck can handle last/cross gen very well, but aren't most current generation games PS5 exclusives?

Unless he implies the Deck can handle the new Ratchet with no problem 🤔

Going to wait to see what the Alienware UFO device offers spec wise. Love the more high end approach to a mobile device though. Nintendo is bugging with ancient chips.
