If I would have to explain the difference to you it’s not worth it. Because Joel is such an unique character who’s look and race plays a big part right? Only a white man can have a life like Joel’s right? He’s a regular Joe blow at the end of the day. A better actor is a plus whoever they’re able to cast regardless of his look.

To be dead honest, I don't think he's a "great" actor. He's been solid in a couple roles though. Maybe I am just still trying to wash the WW84 taste out of my mouth (Chris Pine is legit the only good performance in that piece of shit movie).

I don't support race-swapping historic figures either.
Joel is an established character. Doesn't matter if his race/gender plays any significant role for you or not. It's already established how he looks/acts.
For me, changing established characters this way is bad because it's not canon. Simple as that.

Changing the race doesn't make a "different character". No where in The Last Of Us 1 has race played a factor with his character, like....zero. If the creator of the series was even seeking Ali, it proves it was always an interchangeable thing. I create characters all the time that are interchangeable, in which being girl or boy, black or white or anything like that is actually irrelevant. We are not talking about a game where the character literally talks about being white or him being white is a part of the plot or anything even remotely like that.

Only thing "established" is his name is Joel and his actions. The game never talked about his race to argue it MUST remain the same for the story or any weird shit.

Sweet. Wouldn't have been my first choice, but he's a great actor so I'm confident he'll nail the role. This show has so much potential. And get the guy who made the music for Chernobyl, you could almost feel the dread listening to it. Would fit perfectly in this series. Gustavo could contribute too of course.

artistically, they probably wanted to have a different race from the start lol they just didn't because in the video game world, having a black dude with a white little girl on the cover would lose fucking sales. movies not so much, but gaming? too many white gamers in america so...most main characters have to be white, hence we have the CJ complaints all over again.
I'm all for a race change if it actually makes the story more interesting, or if it was kind of an artistic choice or improvement, in this case...i see it as a potential artistic choice. So much more interesting of a dynamic.
for example if bioshock infinite was released with a black character instead of booker, that would be more interesting than the original source material considering the climate of Columbia so I'd take that in a heart beat. Imagine having to pretend to be Elizabeth's hired help or something as you walk through shops with her just to get by.
but then again some people get all insecure about the thought of their ancestors being racist and probably wouldn't like it lol what a loss.

Joel isn't white for some grand artistic reason, or a reason that is integral to anything... Joel is white, brown haired and bearded because that's what sells....
I think what many (likely white people here lets be honest) are failing to understand is that WHITE, is DEFAULT in america, want a blank slate character? he's gonna be white, want to not lose any sales? make him white. so when they change it, there's likely a good chance there actually is some artistic experimentation going on...so long as him being white isn't integral to the plot like american history X or something.

You ever see him in Game of Thrones? He did a very good job in this one scene with Peter Dinklidge (Tyrion) in a cell. Its in Season 4 ep.7.
I agree he needs gravitas and must bring a dark & violent side to his performance. I think Pascal has the range.
Keep in mind the character he was cast to play in GoT is different from Joel. I trust Pascal because because he did an excellent job bringing Oberyn from the books to the show. He is good in Mando as well and was good in Narcos too.

You know what? Character wise, I could easily see him selling Joel's deadpan/hesitant dialogue delivery and emotionally unavailable character. That's not too far from what he played in True Detective. Sure, he obviously doesn't look the part, but I might be able to look past it. Ali is a great actor.

Why are you assuming this was a "trying to be woke" choice and not an artistic one? because artistically, it's more interesting, and a good chance it is something that they thought about when making the game, I'd wager on that.
the names Joel and Ellie are more prolific to the story than the actual race of the characters, if they're changing the race then they certainly would want to KEEP the name in order to convey some sort of familiarity towards the adaptation. artistically, that makes sense.
