Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment announce open-world Star Wars game

Can't wait to Play Assassin Star Wars Creed: Episode 26. Ubisoft literally makes the same game with a different skin over and over again. Haven't needed to purchase a Ubisoft game Since Assassin's Creed II.

I'm confused with all this new Lucasfilm malarkey. Does this mean EA is no longer the exclusive developer for Star Wars?
EA has a 10 year deal. that should be up around 2023.

When Does the EA Star Wars Deal Expire?

EA signed a 10-year deal in 2013, and there has been no indication that Disney approached EA to extend that deal in the years since it was made. If either side did approach the other in the interest of extending the deal, it certainly seems that they never reached an agreement.

So, the EA Star Wars deal does officially expire in 2023. As we noted above, though, the exact terms of that deal are vague enough to raise some questions about what that expiration actually means. While some suspect that means Ubisoft’s Star Wars game won’t be released until 2023 or after, there’s no confirmation that’s the case. Besides, it might just take that long for Ubisoft to actually make the game given how early that project seemingly is in the development process.

That 2023 date and this recent announcement also raises another important question…

Will EA Still Make Star Wars Games? | Den of Geek

I am actually curious on when this comes out. My guess is the Avatar game is probably close to done but they are holding it back to release closer to the movie to ride out the hype, so that'll be 2022. If they start developing this now then probably a 2024/25 game. EA still has exclusive publishing rights until 2023.

Wonder how much they silently paid EA to change contract

I don't think they paid anything. EA's contract is likely still valid, but others can start developing games, they just cannot publish them until the contract expires.

Really surprised that neither Sony nor Microsoft have a deal with Disney for a Star Wars exclusive. Seems like EA lost the license so that should be a good opportunity for them both.
I would be surprised if neither has it, especially MS. But then again Sony has a deal with Disney for 2 Marvel properties (SM and IM) and MS doesn't have a deal with them yet.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Match made in heaven I think it’s a perfect situation and Ubisoft chose the right running mate we’ll see how it plays out Star Wars is a challenge and some have walked away from it,. Ubisoft is all in on open world after origins, odyssey and Valhalla.

OMG! I didn't think the opening of this company would end the EA exclusivity! They (EA) can still make Star Wars games, sure, but this opens flood gates worth of potential IMO.

Edit: TPS... maybe an action adventure not an RPG... meh, I'll give it a chance.

Thought it was weird EA would release a video celebrating their Star Wars line of games a couple of days ago. I guess it was their way of saying "please don't leave, Lucasfilm". Now let's brace ourselves for the inevitable revenge porn and the usual "they didn't leave us, we left them".

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Remember when you climbed up the Empire State Building in The Division? Me neither.

Oh yeah I forgot they removed that part in their latest game. Let me change my statement :

Prepare for a player customized character making repetitive fetch quests all day, with a mix of finding thousands of collectibles.

I’d love to complain about Ubisoft, but then I remember how many of their games I enjoy. Still not sure that this is the right partnership, but I’m cautiously optimistic.

Lets hope this announcement wasnt premature...
Because LucasFilm under Kennedy is a bitch to work with when you read about the development of Fallen Order

Division 2 must be my most played game last gen, and honestly this could either turn out great or just another meh Star Wars title.

Gameplay wise Division 2 is amazingly fun, and I can see this play out more like a 1313 gameplay (more focus on gun gameplay). But right off the bat I don't think Massive can pull off lightsaber fighting on this one.

Guns, and somersault/traversal skills and Force powers as temporary power-ups skills, instead of managing tech and skills in division? I can see division wrapped in a star wars skin for sure.

I read Ubisoft and Division 2, that’s enough to just walk away from this one. Best case scenario is Assassins Far Cry Watchdog Creed copy and paste, worst case is Division 2 in Star Wars universe...both options suck

Disney are just pimping out their Lucas IP as much as they can.
Also seems to indicate that they are not locking themselves into any exclusive relationships.
So maybe other devs will also be doing Indy games other than Machine.

I heard that it ends in 2023 so it looks like Disney is not renewing it. Other companies can start development, but they most likely won't be releasing until 2023

Massive Games needs a massive overhaul to make this Star Wars game fun and playable.

They better not just copy pasta THE DIVISION onto Star Wars.

Let's hope this turns out good, we'll see, but I'm mainly just happy someone other than EA is making a Star Wars game. Their ones just haven't done if for me at all, with a few exceptions. Let Ubisoft do open world Star Wars, let Sony do a cinematic single player experience, let some good racing studio do a new Racer, etc.

Yeah, after The Divison 2 and the last Ghost Recon game.... Ubisoft was probably the worst publisher after EA.

Division 2 as FANTASTIC. One of the best coop games bar none.

- loot/mods/upgrades/skins
- good gun feel (for the genre)
- fantastic open world
- great UI
- end game requires real skill checks

This new game could really be something.

This franchise has been dead from a creative standpoint ever since they killed Amy Hennig's game. Couldn't care less about what they do with it now.

It could be an open galaxy with many systems/planets in which you play a custom bounty hunter. He/she doesn't even has to be a mandalorian.

Finally leaving EA... they deserved to lose the rights. But Ubisoft? They've been recycling trash for over a decade. Star wars deserves way better. Graphics might be nice, but it's 2021 and most triple A companies can make anything look cool.

The fact that they just they're just recycling games over and over again is my biggest issue. I wouldn't be surprised if we got a new Assassins Creed with Star Wars skin on top of it.

lol you don't know that .

Any game can be cancelled and in EA's defense, if they have to cancel it clearly something must be wrong. They put out Anthem and Andromeda......if they see enough wrong with a game and cancel it, that should tell you something. The community really needs to stop with this stupid notion that it being cancelled was this bad thing as if they know what the game's issues was or something.

If EA was so fucking greedy, the game would have released broken for a cash grab, not canned because of issues. I'm ok with a publisher cancelling a game if they feel its just now working out vs shoving out some early access cash grab. So we don't know what will become of the game as for all we know Ubisoft cancels it lol

N Nutsogood EA will still have the Star Wars License.... its not leaving EA, its now a open license after the exclusively deal lapses. EA will still make Star Wars games, they literally made the best selling Star War game of all time so....I don't see Disney ignoring more money or something...

I hope it won't be one big open-world. There should few planets that you can visit at least. I really liked the Mos Espa level in the Episode 1 game:

You could exlore it freely and talk to people.

This could work
I think Ubi are pretty amazing at creating lush open worlds (my issue is always the content with them)
As long as they can avoid the fucking usual Ubi open world tropes, and debatable storytelling skills they possess, this may work, with a bit of luck

I’m also thrilled this IP’s leaving EA’s clutches. Only SW game I enjoyed in the last decade or so is Fallen Order

this and even if content is not perfect they are a step ahead of all other big studios when it comes to open world.

This is actually pretty exciting. I'll be honest, not a huge fan of Star Wars or Ubisoft but I love sci-fi and an open world Star Wars could be really cool.
Hopefully it doesn't play like Assassin's Creed.

Good news is that Star Wars is going outside of EA. Ill be super excited when I see the words Obsidian and SW together in a headline.

Which planets would you guys want to see? Tatoonie is the most likely to be in the game. Also Coruscant would be great. It could almost be the only one in the game because its a big city. I want those flying cars like in Episode 2.

My dream for this is to be an open world(s) game. Multiple planets with real-time space travel a la no man's sky and with the ability to enter hyper space through a cockpit view. That just feels so starwars. The depth of storytelling from the old republic line of games. Combat of Fallen Order mixed with the division to cover both force wielders and soldier/bounty hunter play styles assuming you have freedom to build the type of character you want. If it's multiplayer I guess I'm looking for a modern SWOTOR but as an action action game with real time space travel in a completely open galaxy. Ability to be any character type. etc. with mini games throughout the world like pod racing or bulls-eyeing womp rats. Basically the most ambitious 10 year project that has everything but probably does none of it very well lol...
