Twitch halts paid channel boosts after people pay to get porn on the front page

In October 2021, Twitch began testing a new feature that enabled viewers to pay money to boost a streamer's channel to the site's front page in order to give it greater exposure. That experiment has now come to an end, at least for the time being, as troublemakers were taking advantage of the system to push porn to the top of the heap.

Boosting originally debuted in December 2020 using free channel points, pooled by viewers during Community Challenges. "When a boost challenge is successfully completed, we'll promote your stream into highly visible parts of Twitch like 'Live channels we think you'll like'," the Boost This Stream FAQ explains. "Promoting your stream helps improve your visibility and reach new audiences."

Paid boosts, first announced in September 2021, work in the same way, except that real money is involved. Unlike channel points, which are earned by following and watching channels, the only limiting factor with paid boosts is how much a person is willing to spend. Streamers themselves can also pay for the boost, effectively enabling them to buy their way onto the front page (or at least contribute to the effort).

On March 30, users on Twitter and Reddit began to notice live channels on the front page streaming porn. It was clear the channels in question were being boosted to the front page, as they were tagged with a "promoted by the streamer's community" label.

oh no boobs!

what a joke. there are a shitload of streamers showing off their tits/cleavage to get views and twitch is fine with that. so what's the difference? a nipple? the horror!

Do they really not have enough moderaters to nuke porn off the front page within a few minutes??? It’s pretty easy to identify…….

I get what they were trying to accomplish with this, but come on man, lmao. Twitch really makes some dense ass decisions.

Sort of have to admire their effort to monetize hate. Would probably work on neegaf too as I'm sure many fanboys would gladly pay to promote their hero threads.

So then business as usual for Twitch. Creating a new system and launching it with zero moderation. It's honestly impressive how they've fallen upwards to be the top streaming service.

It wouldn't take a genius to see where this would end up. Porn always sells more because it's cheap content to produce, and humans (especially teenagers) are horny all the time or want to see shit catch on fire.

Rumors pop up every few months of someone trying to be ambitious enough to launch an X-rated version of Twitch, but it goes away pretty fast once they realize how much money Twitch loses compared to what they gain. They're still in the negative last I read.

I have a funny feeling the porn thing is just a convenient excuse for them getting rid of a feature that potentially threatened the popularity of one of their already-established cash cows.

I think twitch found their niche with the softcore porn stuff because they wouldn't able to be a direct competitor to a behemoth like Phub. It works for them this, they promote gaming, podcasts and IRL vlogs as their main feature with porn being prominent but always on the sidelines market wise.

Going full porn would be a huge loss.

What's a boost?

What's her Twitch?

Also why am I never around to see the pron?

Still don't understand the appeal of watching someone else play a game.

Depends. If it's a game I've not tried yet, but would like to, I might watch someone play just to see if I'd end up liking it. If it's a game I've already played, and I knew it had some BS in it, I like watching other people suffer while I laugh at their fails.

And I am part of the problem, of just watching hot girls on Twitch in general. I don't send them money though so that doesn't make me a simp.

Sometime the streamer has a really funny personality so it’s hilarious watching them play something. Sometimes the person is really interesting so they talk to the audience for a while before they play something. Sometimes there’s a game that you wouldn’t normally play or buy, but then you watch someone else playing it and it’s entertaining… for example, I would never buy elden ring because I don’t like to be frustrated by difficulty in games. However, I’ve been having a ton of fun watching dizzykitten play it, and it hasn’t cost me a dime (unlike buying the game).

Sounds like loneliness.

You do bring up a good point though. Watching a no commentary playthrough of a "cinematic" game would save you $60-70 and a bunch of time. Elden Ring isn't one of those games though.
Not a sports fan huh?
Watching grown men play with balls is peak cringe.

Sure bud.

Same dogshit platform I can't believe people still bother with. It's clear as fucking day they don't give a shit now they on that Amazon paycheck.

I don't understand what's the big deal.
Obviously everyone watches porn but somehow companies want to be holier than a nun.
The argument "advertisers don't want their ads on adult content with nudity and swearing" is CRAZY.
People who use "bad words" and people who watch porn (so all people) are regular consumers.
Do they really think that pornhub goers do not buy new cars or eat snickers ?! fkn cmon.
Put my company ads on everything !

I could go into how the world's puritanical nature has brought us to this moment, but that's a messy topic. Instead I'll just say this: They know, we know, and you know, but they have to pretend like they don't know or don't want to know that we know and you know, for those who actually don't know or don't want to know.

You only have to look at Steam community forums to see how that would turn out. Without fail, it's always the trashy bait threads that get a big shiny award slapped on them, and there's always at least one trashy bait thread.
