THE “BOUNTY” CHALLENGES

(Note – for arcade/MAME challenges, some “bounties” are to beat the existing world record. I have decided to, for the spirit of competition, to assign the higher of the Twin Galaxies or MARP world records, just to ensure that only the finest performances are submitted to claim the “bounty” reward. Twin Galaxies scores are taken from both our website of www.twingalaxies.com and our published 1st edition of the Twin Galaxies Official Video Game & Pinball Book of World Records. MARP records can be found at the website http://marp.retrogames.com/frames.htm)

To date, a 15 million-point jump has been verified, one animal short of the maximum. Rumour has it that years back this feat has been done by at least one player, but no one ever captured proof of these historic achievements, and so no 30 million-point jump has ever been accomplished. And I want to see it happen !!

Bounty (4b) – Zookeeper (set 1)(Bounty Prize: $1,000.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “ZOOKEEP” Challenge Rating – 9 (out of 5 !!) Challenge: Be the first player to successfully capture TWO (2) 30 million-point jumps onto videotape or a MAME INP file Rules and Settings – Novice animal speed = “39”, expert animal speed = “30”, three (3) starting lives, extras awarded after each successful completion of an escalator stage Bounty Prize - Special Bounty Payable Date – beginning with ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment, bounty, two (2) equal installments of $500.00 each will be awarded to the extraordinary player who manages to pull this off.

Special Note – if someone manages to pull this “bounty” off before the single jump “bounty”, then Bounty “4a” becomes null and void effective immediately. However, if Bounty “4a” is accomplished at any point in the year, then Bounty “4b” is still in effect until Dec31/05. So that there is no misunderstanding, the same performance CANNOT be submitted for both bounty prizes.

Bounty (5a) – Frogger (Bounty Prize: $250.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “FROGGER” Challenge Rating – 5 (out of 5) Challenge: beat the existing world record of 442,330 points (source=TG) Rules and Settings – five (5) lives to start, one (1) extra life at 20,000 points Bounty Prize - $250.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (5b) – Frogger (Bounty Prize: $1,000.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “FROGGER” Challenge Rating – 9 (out of 5) Challenge: attain or beat the ficticious world record of 863,050 points as set by George Costanza in the now-famous episode of “Seinfeld” Rules and Settings – five (5) lives to start, one (1) extra life at 20,000 points Bounty Prize - Special Bounty Payable Date – beginning with ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment, bounty, two (2) equal installments of $500.00 each will be awarded to the extraordinary player who manages to pull this off.

Special Note – if someone manages to pull this “bounty” off before the current world record “bounty”, then Bounty “5a” becomes null and void effective immediately. However, if Bounty “5a” is accomplished at any point in the year, then Bounty “5b” is still in effect until Dec31/05. So that there is no misunderstanding, the same performance CANNOT be submitted for both bounty prizes.

Bounty (6) – Gyruss (Bounty Prize: $100.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “GYRUSS” Challenge Rating – 4 (out of 5) Challenge: attain a score of 2.5 million or more at tournament settings (TGTS) Rules and Settings – difficulty “8” (Hardest), game ends after losing five (5) ships Bonus Prize - $100.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment

Bounty (7) – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (set 1)(Bounty Prize: $150.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “INDYTEMP” Challenge Rating – 4.5 (out of 5) Challenge: attain a score of 2 million or more Rules and Settings – difficulty is player’s choice at beginning of game, three (3) starting lives Bounty Prize - $150.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment Special Note – MAME INP playback is problematic with this title. At this time I am unsure of a solution…could be turning sound default off, could be that MAME cannot handle the title yet without incident. Gamer is responsible for ensuring that a MAME INP submission will play back correctly. Videotaped arcade performances, and simultaneously videotaped MAME performances, however, do not have this concern.

Bounty (8) – Rally X (Bounty Prize: $150.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “RALLYX” Challenge Rating – 4.5 (out of 5) Challenge: attain a score of 250,000 points or more Rules and Settings – difficulty “3 lives medium”, bonus life “A” Bounty Prize - $150.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Special Note – settings for acceleration, brake and steering are accessed in the service menu and must be EXACTLY what is stated above, and MUST be displayed prior to the game attempt. Proof of this MUST be included with any qualifying submission or the performance will be rejected. Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (11a) – Astro Fighter (set 1) (Bounty Prize: $500.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “ASTROF” Challenge Rating – 7.5 (out of 5) Challenge: attain a score of 50,000 points or more Rules and Settings – difficulty “Easy”, three (3) starting ships, one (1) bonus ship at 3,000 points Special Rules – you are allowed to use the 10,000 point trick once (1x) per ship Special Note (1) – the ROMset approved by Twin Galaxies results in each fireball being worth sixty (60) points when hit. Another ROMset which awards a large score based on hitting multiple fireballs is the wrong ROMset, so please verify your ROMset before you attempt this record. Special Note (2) – if someone manages to pull this “bounty” off before bounty “11b”, then Bounty “11b” becomes null and void effective immediately. However, if Bounty “11b” is accomplished at any point in the year, then Bounty “11a” is still in effect until Dec31/05. So that there is no misunderstanding, the same performance CANNOT be submitted for both bounty prizes. Bounty Prize - $500.00 (see bounty 11b) Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

If someone manages to attain a score of 50,000 points or more by December 31st, 2005, then bounty “11b” is immediately null and void as a direct result. Bounty (21) – Track n Field (Bounty Prize: $500.00) >for arcade/MAME ROMset = “TRACKFLD” Challenge Rating – 7.5 (out of 5) Challenge: achieve a score of at least 98,000 points Rules and Settings – difficulty = 2 (Normal), starting lives = 2, bonus life = None, Game is OVER after last event Special Note (1) – due to the multiple methods for cheating on this title, and the years of hearing stories of alleged accomplishments, I am taking unique steps to ensure that any submission is totally legit as follows below. Special Note (2) – any submissions received will be met with an extra level of scrutiny, which may even include asking a world class player for their professional opinion on the legitimacy of the performance. In that event, at my own expense, a copy will be forwarded to an expert on the title. Their opinion will be considered but will not be the sole determining factor on whether the performance is legitimate. SPECIAL ADDITION - in the event that no one manages to pull off a score of 98,000 points by December 31st, 2005, then I will offer HALF the bounty reward ($250.00) to the first submitted and verified score that beats the current MARP world record of 95,930 points by Tommi Tihonnen of Finland, the highest verified score ever made, and this half-prize will be awarded on December 31st, 2005. HOWEVER, if at any point between now and December 31st, 2005, a score of 98,000 points materializes and is deemed legitimate, than any "bounty" claim for the aformentioned half-prize of $250.00 is null and void effective immediately. And so that I am perfectly clear, one or the other bounty prize will be awarded...not both. That being said…

Special ARCADE Rules – track balls are NOT allowed…proof that buttons were used is an absolute must or “bounty” cannot and will not be awarded. Also, challenge is for single player performance ONLY…assistance from a second player is expressly prohibited. Lastly, player may ONLY use their hands/fingers on the buttons…no external devices are allowed (NO exceptions), and proof that hands/fingers were used is an absolute must or “bounty” cannot and will not be awarded.

Special MAME Rules – for MAME players, unless the game is captured by video camcorder, it is impossible to determine whether a track ball was utilized or whether an external device was used to facilitate rapid consistent depressing of buttons. Therefore, to prevent any form of cheating, the following three (3) steps must be adhered to… 1st – MAME players MUST capture their entire performance via video camcorder onto VHS videocassette inclusive of accessing their folder for MAME screenshots (.png files) to show that no screenshot exists prior to gameplay 2nd – Continue recording while launching MAME and selecting the “Play and Record” option, this way I know that an INP playback is not being recorded instead. 3rd - Further, upon completion of the title, hit “F12” to capture a screenshot, then continue recording and access the screenshot folder on your MAME directory. Open the new ‘png file. If the score matches, then I will accept your submission Bounty Prize = $500.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (22) – Galaxian – SPECIAL BILL MITCHELL CHALLENGE (Bounty Prize: Read Below) After nearly twenty (20) years, one of the most venerable classic arcade world records was broken on the game “Galaxian”. Bill Mitchell would like to see just how far this game’s world record score can reach, and has offered a unique cash challenge to fuel the competition.

In short, if you think you can beat the current world record, do so and immediately stop, and you win $100.00. Why stop ? That’s the catch. If you think you can reach the 500K mark, you forego the chance to win the $100.00 prize as you try to reach 500K.

If you fail to reach 500K, you get nothing, not even the $100.00 for breaking the existing world record, but you at least can register an awesome score with Twin Galaxies. Reach 500K and stop, and win $250.00, but there’s more.

Think you have what it takes to reach the million point barrier ? Keep on going, BUT you forego the claim on the $250.00 bounty !! Fail to get a million, and you win nothing…except the chance to register an awesome score with Twin Galaxies. However, if you reach a million points, keep on going as long as you can, and rejoice, as you’ve won Bill’s thousand dollar prize !!

It is Bill Mitchell’s intent that this special bounty challenge is to be handled similar to the classic vintage game show, “The $64,000 Question”. You must decide before proceeding further…do you take what you’ve won, or try for more, risking it all in an all-or-nothing challenge. To further clarify, it is Bill Mitchell’s intent that a single performance may only be eligible for one (1) of the three challenge thresholds below.

That being said, below are the specifics of this most unique classic arcade gaming challenge. Good luck one and all.

Bounty (22a) – Galaxian – SPECIAL BILLY MITCHELL CHALLENGE (PART ONE)(Bounty Prize: Read Below) for- “Galaxian (Namco set 1)” for arcade ONLY (i.e. MAME not eligible) ROMset = “GALAXIAN” Challenge Rating – 4 (out of 5) Challenge: achieve a score of at least 399,300 points Rules and Settings – three (3) ships to start, one (1) extra ship at 7,000 points Special Rule (A) - player MUST immediately end their game as soon as they pass 399,290 points Special Rule (B) – the current arcade world record holder as of Dec31/04 is NOT eligible for this challenge Special Rule (C) – bounty (22a) is nulled and voided if either bounty (22b) or (22c) is successfully claimed before bounty (22a) at any point on or before December 31st, 2005 Bounty Prize = $100.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (22a) – Galaxian – SPECIAL BILLY MITCHELL CHALLENGE (PART TWO)(Bounty Prize: Read Below) for arcade ONLY (i.e. MAME not eligible) ROMset = “GALAXIAN” Challenge Rating – 5 (out of 5) Challenge: achieve a score of at least 500,000 points Rules and Settings – three (3) ships to start, one (1) extra ship at 7,000 points Special Rule (A) - player MUST immediately end their game as soon as they pass 500,000 points Special Rule (B) – bounty (22a) AND bounty (22b) are BOTH null and void if bounty (22c) is successfully claimed before bounty (22a) and/or bounty (22b) at any point on or before December 31st, 2005 Bounty Prize = $250.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (22a) – Galaxian – SPECIAL BILLY MITCHELL CHALLENGE (PART Three)(Bounty Prize: Read Below) for “Galaxian (Namco set 1)” for arcade ONLY (i.e. MAME not eligible) ROMset = “GALAXIAN” Challenge Rating – 9 (out of 5) Challenge: achieve a score of at least 1,000,000 points Rules and Settings – three (3) ships to start, one (1) extra ship at 7,000 points Special Rule (A) - player may continue their performance until their fourth (last) ships is destroyed Special Rule (B) – bounty (22a) AND bounty (22b) are BOTH null and void if bounty (22c) is successfully claimed before bounty (22a) and/or bounty (22b) at any point on or before December 31st, 2005 Bounty Prize = $1,000.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (23) – Stocker – (Bounty Prize: $75.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “STOCKER” Challenge Rating – 3 (out of 5) Challenge: beat existing world record of 54,030 points (source=MARP) Rules and Settings – factory default (OPTSW0=11111110, OPTSW1=00000000) Bounty Prize = $75.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (24) – Up’n Down (not encrypted) (Bounty Prize: $100.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “UPNDOWNU” Challenge Rating – 4 (out of 5) Challenge: attain a score of 500,000 points or more Rules and Settings – difficulty = “EASY”, starting lives = 3, bonus life = 10,000 points Bounty Prize = $100.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (25b) – Ghox (Bounty Prize: $300.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “GHOX” Challenge Rating – 6 (out of 5) Challenge: go beyond stage (5-7) as a single player on a single credit and complete the game Rules and Settings – difficulty = “MEDIUM”, starting lives = 3, bonus lives = 100K then every 200K thereafter, unused = “OFF” (all), continuation is NOT allowed Special Note – I have no proof that the game goes beyond this point short of the cryptic text at the end of the game, which alludes that going further is possible. As with the classic arcade title “Wonderboy” where there are multiple endings, I want to know if “Ghox” has such an ending, and if so, can someone actually finish this game on a single credit. I would have offered more, but since I do not know if getting past that point is even part of the game, I cannot afford to be anything but conservative. Bounty Prize = $300.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (26) – Popeye (revision D) (Bounty Prize: $250.00) for arcade/MAME (see special rules below) ROMset = “POPEYE” Challenge Rating – 5 (out of 5) Challenge: beat the existing world record of 1,232,250 points (source=TG) Rules and Settings – difficulty = 1 (“MEDIUM”), starting lives = 3, bonus *life at 40,000 points, unknown = “OFF” Special Rules – for MAME submissions, WolfMAME 0.88 or higher must be used or proper playback is not possible. Bounty (28) – Trog (revision LA4 3/11/91) (Bounty Prize: $250.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “TROG” Challenge Rating – 5 (out of 5) Challenge: complete the game on ONE (1) life, regardless of score, as a single player, on a single credit Rules and Settings – unused = “OFF” (all), player allowed to start up to island 4 Special Note – MAME INP playback is problematic with this title. At this time I am unsure of a solution. I have been informed that the solution could be turning sound default off, or that it could be that MAME cannot handle the title yet without incident. Gamer is responsible for ensuring that a MAME INP submission will play back correctly. Videotaped arcade performances, and simultaneously videotaped MAME performances, however, do not have this concern. Bounty Prize = $250.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (29) – Targ (Bounty Prize: $100.00) for arcade/MAME ROMset = “TARG” Challenge Rating – 4 (out of 5) Challenge: beat the existing world record of 91,330 points (source=MARP) Rules and Settings – starting lives = 3, top score awards credit and NOT extended play Bounty Prize = $100.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (93) – Crazy Taxi (Bounty Prize: $100.00) for Sega Dreamcast (DC) Challenge Rating – 4 (out of 5) Challenge: achieve 250 or more “Crazy Throughs” on the mini-game challenge “Crazy Through” Special Rules – player may use any vehicle and driver combination Bounty Prize - $100.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (94) – Crazy Taxi 2 (Bounty Prize: SEE BELOW) for Sega Dreamcast (DC) Challenge Rating – SPECIAL Challenge: – be the first gamer on EITHER “Around Apple” or “Small Apple” course, pick up 455 or more passengers Special Rules – player may use any vehicle and driver combination Bounty Prize - $5.00 PER PASSENGER picked up and successfully dropped off in excess of 454 (in other words, 464 passengers would mean $50.00 while 500 would mean $230.00)

Special Note (1) – this “bounty” is null and void immediately after the first received, successful claim. In other words, only ONE (1) payout will be made, regardless of the course you choose, or the number of passengers you pick up.

Special Note (2) – it is believed that no more than 500 passengers are available for pickup, but to date the most passengers picked up was 454 by Matthew Leto. No one knows whether the passenger count resets after all available passengers are picked up. If it does, then the potential payout will be capped at USD $1,000.00, but I believe that this game behaves just like the predecessor title “Crazy Taxi” and that once the last passenger is picked up, the passenger count does not reset, thus the probable maximum payout will be (46 x $5 = $230) assuming all 500 passengers are picked up and dropped off. Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (95) – Crazy Taxi 2 (Bounty Prize: $50.00) for Sega Dreamcast (DC) Challenge Rating – 2 (out of 5) Challenge: complete the “Crazy Road” mini-game challenge in under 20 seconds Special Rules – player may use any vehicle and driver combination Bounty Prize - $50.00 Bounty Payable Date – ninety (90) days after mailing postmark of successful accomplishment.

Bounty (97) – Marvel vs Capcom 2 (Bounty Prize: $75.00) for Sega Dreamcast (DC) Challenge Rating – 2 (out of 5) Challenge: highest score over 3 billion points Rules and Settings – (to follow) Special Rules (1) – player may use any combination of characters Special Rules (2) – continuation is NOT allowed Bounty Prize - $75.00 Bounty Payable Date – January 31st, 2006

Special Note– my VCR is still shot, couldn’t pick up a new one, and I have no way to connect the Sega DC to my old TV. If one of you can assist me with the Rules, that would be appreciated. According to the notes from the MoA 2001 event, the rules were basically any 3-character combination was allowed, and I have short-hand comments of “Timer=90 or 99, turbo 2, normal damage” but can’ read the comments well. I was hoping to launch the system and check against the game options but can’t right now. Maybe one of you players can help me make heads or tails out of what my notes were from 3 years ago, then I can lock into the settings for the event. That would be greatly appreciated until I get my new VCR.

As this is the first-ever PC-based “bounty”, special precautions have been taken to ensure that all participating gamers have a fair deal at submitting a performance for consideration. Please read the seven (7) special rules that follow.

Special Rule (1) – You may use either the original version of “Doom 3” or the patched 1.1 version for Windows PCs. You may also use Linux builds 1.1.1282 and 1.1.1286

Special Rule (2) – When at the title screen, press ctrl-alt-tilde simultaneously in order to bring down the console. Then scroll upwards using “Page Up” all the way to the top line. You may then return to the title screen and select the “Nightmare” difficulty.

Special Rule (3) – The game clock begins the moment the ID software logo appears during the first cut-scene, and ends when the final blow is landed on the Cyberdemon, thus triggering the ending cut-scene.

Special Rule (4) – Skipping cut-scenes by pressing is allowed

Special Rule (5) – The game must be recorded from bootup of the computer via a cideo camcorder device or using a TV-out routed to a VCR. FRAPS is NOT accepted for this reason, although you may use it to record the game-play for your personal archives.

Special Rule (6) – Because of various demo issues, please do not record a demo while playing.

Special Rule (7) – To ensure compatibility of times between systems of different speed, map loading is NOT included in the final time. Bounty Prize - $150.00 Bounty Payable Date – January 31st, 2006

And now, fellow gamers, two (2) “bounty” challenges from gamer Adam Wood, for your consideration. To avoid any misunderstandings, what follows is a direct copy of the exact wording of Adam’s “bounty” challenges”.

Gameboy Advance

Bounty (117) – Advance Guardian Heroes (Bounty Prize: $50.00) for the Native platform: Game Boy Advance Challenge: Out-of-the-box hardcore Reward: $50 for the first

Special Rules and Settings - To win this bounty, the player would need to provide a continuous recording of a Story Mode game, played at Super Hard difficulty, with Enn, Ray, or Hyu as their chosen character (the only three available without unlocking). The player must start from the beginning (by selecting New Game), and successfully complete the entire game, right down to the final counter. The player CANNOT DIE AT ALL during the course of the game; continuing and/or Devil Mode are strictly prohibited. Standard TG anti-pausing-abuse considerations apply. (Since the game provides safe spots in the form of the level-up screens, there are perfectly legal bathroom-break segments available even if you never pause the game.) Only the first qualifying submission (with "first" defined identically to the rest of your bounties) will earn this bounty.

Bounty (118) – Advance Guardian Heroes (Bounty Prize: $50.00) for the Native platform: Game Boy Advance Challenge: Fastest hardcore Reward: $50 for shortest time at year's end

Special Rules and Settings - To win this bounty, the player would need to provide a continuous recording of a Story Mode game, played at Super Hard difficulty, with the character of their choice - unlike the previous bounty, any of the nineteen characters ultimately unlockable and playable in Story Mode may be chosen. The player must start from the beginning (by selecting New Game), and successfully complete the entire game, right down to the final counter.

The player CANNOT DIE AT ALL during the course of the game; continuing and/or Devil Mode are strictly prohibited. Only the submission with the shortest completion time will earn this bounty. The game clock starts as soon as the player presses the button locking in their selection of character and ends as soon as they press the button to counter the final boss's final shot. Since the clock is your opponent, pausing is expressly permitted and unrestricted. A player selecting Enn, Ray, or Hyu can be eligible for both of these bounties with a single submission.

Advance Guardian Heroes has no known glitches. For the purposes of these bounties, I will accept recordings played on a Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, Game Boy Player, or Nintendo DS; the recording must otherwise be TG-compliant in all other aspects. Entries for both bounties would be accepted as soon as the announcement is made and will be accepted until 2006 (i.e. December 31st, 2005).
