Turin Turambar's Top 75 Recommended Anime Series

Anime

Anime is bad. You could say...
570.gif

But still, some people still insists in asking recommendations of anime from time to time. They didn't get the memo of the true nature of anime!
So from time to time I post more or less the same list of recommendations that I always do.
I thought how practical would be to actually make a thread for it, and then just link to the thread the next time they ask! And If I make a thread, I can put it all nice and dandy, with labels, pictures and everything. Genius!

---In no order in particular---

Hunter x Hunter (2011)
Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Suspense, Drama

33657.jpg

Perhaps of one the best shonen adventures out there. It starts traditionally, but soon the author uses his knack to plan interesting scenarios where things doesn't seem what appear, or where he can play mind games and present atypical challenges. He also has a predilection to play with typical stereotypes within the genre and then apply his own twist. And later it goes into directions you can not imagine at first, from suspense with mafia families and underworld crime to political plotlines to nerve-cracking suspense to surprising romance stories.

Level E
Comedy, Science Fiction, Adventure, Episodic

29668.jpg

From the same author as Hunter x Hunter, it shows a good range of stories from the horror ones to outlandish fantasy to, most commonly, full-on comedy. One of my favorite anime comedies.

Mob Psycho 100
Comedy, Action, Supernatural, Character growth

80356.jpg

From the author of One Punch Man, it also uses a mix of comedy and action, though this time the comedy role is minor, and it succeeds in telling a more serious story of a family, power, responsibility and accepting feelings. Don't disregard the visuals, the art style can look simple and plain, but it's actually very polished and cohesive, apart of having spectacular animation in the action scenes.

Mushishi
Supernatural, Fantasy, Episodic, Medic, Drama, Romance

73862.jpg

One of the most delicate, evocative series you can find. The slow paced story focuses on the cases a medic finds in his dealings with conditions provoked by supernatural beings, but this is an excuse for a journey examining human nature in the frame of a supernatural encounter, with dramas, little tragedies, tales of hope or little romances stories. All surrounded of the most magnificent nature backgrounds.

Attack on Titan
Action, Mystery, Military, Suspense, Horror, Fantastic

47347.jpg

A great mix of an original and intriguing post-apocalyptic setting, kinetic action, lots of mysteries and twists and some suspense. While it doesn't have the deepest characters, it compensates with a big ensemble cast. It really combines well the hopelessness and cruel situation with the heroic hope given by the protagonists. The first season falters in some places in the pacing, but it isn't as bad as some people say, and the second season cements its quality with great scenes, more complex characters and good surprises.

Fate Zero
Fantasy, Action, Drama, Suspense

73249.jpg

A fantasy thriller of a supernatural war fought in secrecy between factions. Thrown some very cool action fights, mythological figures, charismatic characters and some drama parts that may surprise you in the end and you have the best thing of the Fate series.

Haikyuu!!
Sports, School, Comedy

76014.jpg

Straightforward school sports series about volleyball, with three seasons. But straightforward doesn't mean bad, it has a likeable protagonists, intense matches where you will want to cheer for them, humor, good animation and an attractive art style, making in the end one of the best sport series.

One-Punch Man
Comedy, Action, Parody, Science Fiction

76049.jpg

A comedic take on superheroes, where a superhero is just too powerful, falling depressed because he can't fight exciting fights anymore. Of course, there are still spectacular fights here, while at the same time the series laughs at some of the stereotypes of the genre. But more importantly, it in the end it still remembers what a hero is, and their role in being a beacon of hope and humanity.

Ping Pong
Sports, Drama, Character growth, School

58041.jpg

With an atypical art style, it presents the intimate story of friendship and rivalry between two ping pong players, and it explore their characters and their relationship in an interesting manner.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Fantastic, Drama, Magical Girl, Tragedy, Romance

55225.jpg

What would happen if you take a genre like the Magical Girl and turn it into its head applying a more realistic approach? What if the setting would be more gritty? What if you can't trust others? Well, you can see it now. Lots of surprises await, so I won't say anymore.

Shinsekai Yori
Science Fiction, Mystery, Drama, Romance, Tragedy

36775.jpg

A mysterious future where people started appearing with psychic abilities provoked a great war that sweeped the planet. After this Apocalypse humanity survived in small stringent societies with some kind of mutated animals are a servitor race. A group of child grow in that environment and with time discover the dirty secrets of their society.

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjou
Drama, Historical, Romance, Art, fake Biopic

77907.jpg

A fake biopic, in the sense it has the structure of a biopic, following the life and work of someone noteworthy (a professional of a obscure art, Rakugo) from his childhood to his end. Historical, too, as the setting is the pre and post WW2 in Japan. This anime is a total success in characterization, in drama, in establishing the vibe of an historical era, and in showing off the love and passion of a craft, Rakugo.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan
Action, Science Fiction, Adventure, Epic, Comedy

5123.jpg

Big robots in a science fiction action series that redefines the word epic. It starts small, and grows and grows... until incredible lengths. It's perhaps the poster child of hot-heated, willpower can do everything attitude in anime, and it's true it utilizes it to very good effect.

The Eccentric Family
Fantastic, Magical Realism, Drama, Adventure, Family, Comedy

85433.jpg

The adventure of of a family of supernatural tanukis, that live as humans in modern Kyoto while they mess with the dangerous and also mythological Tengus. A great tale that feels both familiar and unique, with some adventure and comedy vibes that intertwines with family drama, all seen from a different point of view that we are accustomed of.

Tsuritama
Adventure, Family, Comedy, Science fiction, Character Growth

69909.jpg

A great little fun story of superation, fishing and friendship... And also aliens. And people with funny hats. And more craziness. It does the happy adventure style that puts you a smile on your face really well.

Steins Gate
Science Fiction, Romance, Drama, Otaku, Comedy

73199.jpg

While it has some fixation on otaku stuff that in truth aren't relevant to the story, I recommend this as a very good science fiction romance with some drama. It starts a bit slow, it needs some episodes to get going... but when shit hits the fan, you will see the light. The direction is a bit plain but the story beats are executed perfectly, creating great empathy with the characters.

The Tatami Galaxy
Fantastic, Episodic, Character growth, Romance, Comedy

50457.jpg

Quick, witty and wordy coming of age story in college, where our protagonists live different wacky situations, and love start to slowly blossom, and things go into bizarre directions. It actually has good psychological moments, too, and a surprising end.

Full Metal Alchemist
Adventure, Fantasy, Action, Drama, Mystery, Comedy

75815.jpg

One of the most well known and recognized adventures in anime. Very solid. From the action and comedy, to the intriguing mystery and reveals, to the interesting setting with their own nations and past, to the well realized human drama.

Mouryou no Hako
Mystery, Crime, Psychological, Thriller

75492.jpg

A pure detective crime story involving mutilated high school girls; it's complex, haunting, and very moody.

House of Five Leaves
Historical, Mystery, Crime, Drama

75203.jpg

A weak samuari ronin and a group of thieves end up in a weird arrangement that in the end it will discover a hidden past. A more slow paced, personal drama than you may think at first.

Ghost in the shell Stand Alone complex
Science Fiction, Military, Police, Episodic, Thriller

50857.jpg

A modern classic of science fiction, separating itself from the original manga and the famous film to create its own style. It has both standalone episodes with plots related to crime or spies or whatever that are self contained and offer a nice variety of stories, and other episodes with a greater, more complex and poignant narrative arc. In summary it succeeds in both fronts, taking the best of both worlds. Cool science fiction setting, good military action, thought provoking fiction, and tense thriller parts.

Planetes
Science Fiction, Slice of Life, Drama, Comedy, Character Growth, Romance

50463.jpg

A 'realistic' science fiction story about astronauts of a small company that take care removing garbage (space debris) to they don't endanger satellites or spaceships. It starts as charming comedy but soon the characters start to open up and show a deeper characterization, and thing eventually turn more serious, exploring the dreams and ambitions of the characters.

Legend of Galactic Heroes
Science Fiction, Epic, Military, Political, Large cast

13225.jpg

A military space opera epic, with fake XIX c. Prussians in space and the clash of empires vs democracies as one of the core concepts. The series follow military geniuses in both sides, without judging either faction, and stand out for having a interesting mix of both epic space battles and a documentary vibe and some good reflections about human nature, history and philosophy.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
Drama, Science Fiction, Revenge, Mystery, Based on Historical Fiction

2235.jpg

This is a good Count of Montecrist adaption in anime form. A story that is a classic, the charismatic characters, the intriguing setting mix of science fiction and historical, and the distinct art style makes it an easy recommendation.

Serial Experiments Lain
Science Fiction, Psychological, Mystery, Character Growth

10243.jpg

One of the most known science fiction animes from the 90s. The foreboding, oppressive atmosphere, the cyberpunk influence of the story and aesthetics, and how it plays with reality and illusion makes a trademark style that isn't easily forgotten.

FLCL
Adventure, Action, Comedy, Science Fiction

77356.jpg

Crazy adventures with crazy aesthetics, strange robots, unforgettable characters and an epic finale, a rock band as the constant soundtrack and an overall intensity that traps you, for many it's a highlight of what anime can or should be.

Cowboy Bebop
Science Fiction, Episodic, Action, Drama, Tragedy

19644.jpg

Do I need to write a summary for this one? Oh well. Western influenced space adventures with with good characters, good variety of episode storylines that go from comedy to tragedy, good kinetic animation and direction and to top it off a great Jazz soundtrack by Yokko Kanno.
I personally don't think it's the best anime tv series ever, as others think, but it's pretty good!

Moyashimon
College, Adventure, Educational, Comedy, Slice of Life

37533.jpg

Are you tired of silly teenagers in animes? I can't blame you. Try then people in college, exactly follow the fermentation specialists of a agricultural university. Lots of crazy adventures, people trying to make alcohol (and even learning something scientific about the process), nice group dynamics and some unexpected surprises with the characters.

Gunslinger Girl
Science Fiction, Action, Tragedy, Military

3088.jpg

In an undetermined future, we follow a special and experimental military team specialized in counter-terrorism against secessionist groups (kind of based in reality in that regard!). However, what I haven't told is that the team operative a cybernetically augmented and conditioned people, and the experimental technology for that works best for little girls.
You may thing 'ugh another little girls anime' but it isn't like that, the serious treatment of their issues and their relationships with the rest of the agency is great, the action is solid, and all ties together beautifully.

Texhnolyze
Science Fiction, Mystery, Crime, Tragedy, Slow Paced

18165.jpg

Cyberpunk inspired drama of a fighter whose fall out of grace with his promoters and lose some limbs, replaced by prosthetics. He is involved with several factions that vie for the city's control. The mysterious city, Lux, that will open up its secrets in ways you can't imagine.

Fantastic Children
Adventure, Science Fiction, Drama, Romance

77062.jpg

One of the series with the most charm, mystery, adventure and aesthetics that remind me of adventured done by Ghibli, so that's already high praise.
A group of enigmatic white-haired children has been spotted at different times and places in Europe for over 500 years. Always with the appearance of 11-year-olds, they behave far more mature than they should be, never grow old, and seem to have supernatural power. What they have been seeking is a girl, and the only clue they have is a picture with a crescent moon.

Golden Boy
Comedy, Sex, Slice of Life

62867.jpg

Maybe the nostalgia affects me, but I remember this 90s sex comedy miniseries as hilarious. The protagonist, Kintaro, is a wandering part-time worker that though willpower is able to do everything. Though maybe, his sex drive helps that will power!

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Science Fiction, Mechas, Drama, Mystery, Psychological, Action

21418.jpg

What would happen if someone would try to do a more realistic, more serious, more gritty and more complex mecha series? What would happen if the stars align and you had an incredible group of people working on it? What happens in Neon Genesis Evangelion, a totally monumental and seminal work. It actually transcend mere fiction and talk of the human condition, of the fears and insecurities of its creator, and does it in a brilliant way. Watch End of Evangelion film too!

Paranoia Agent
Mystery, Police, Drama, Psychological, Supernatural

10240.jpg

A mysterious assailant, the Shounen Bat, is attacking people in the city, and two detectives will try to stop him. But there is something different in him, and it's a mystery the relation between the victims. Are they random? The victims even seem glad to be attacked. Something is not right, and paranoia will extended in the city.
It starts normal, but eventually it grows more and more stranger, and the limits of reality are not as firm here as you could expect.

Princess Tutu
Magical Girl, Mystery, Romance, Comedy

32209.jpg

A magical girl series with fairy tales as background, first it will please you with lots of nice humor, later the mystery behind everything and how characters are deeper than it seems will surprise you. Don't let the magical girl theme bother you, there is a reason why if you google 'princess tutu meme' this appears...(just don't take it literally)

Kemonozoume
Fantastic, Drama, Romance

86766.jpg

A love at first sight story between a man and a woman, whose families are trying to kill each other so they will fight against everything for their love. Oh yeah, I forgot, they are respectively cannibal monsters and monster hunters, that would explain why the killing.
A unique anime to watch, with a very unique direction and flair.

Kaiba
Science Fiction, Episodic, Mystery, Drama

13193.jpg

In the very far away future, people can change easily bodies, memories and death isn't permanent, but humanity is in clear decadence, losing any kind of direction and aimless rotting away. In that situation we have an amnesia-suffering protagonist, with only a pendant with a picture as possession, who is being chased. He will travel though different places and meet different people, in this very strange but intriguing future.

Haibane Renmei
Fantasy, Slice of Life, Mystery, Drama

13134.jpg

A group of girls live tranquil days in a mysterious city of unspecified purpose, they live as good as they can. Mysteriously, they have wings in their back, and strange flashbacks bother them. Pure slice of life, but mixed with an original and intriguing setting and pleasing aesthetics and soundtrack, it makes for something more special

Kino's Journey
Fantastic, Episodic, Drama, Adventure, Psychological

14415.jpg

A strange beast to describe, an very episodic series where a tough, armed girl called Kino travels to many places, each with their different customs and problems. A atmosphere of mystique and fairy tales is juxtaposed by oppression, tragedy and loneliness.

Ouran High School Host Club
Comedy, School, Gender-bender, Romance

71992.jpg

Pure romantic comedy anime, full of hijinks and slapstick comedy, anime exaggerations, school tropes and more. But it's seriously good, I think the secret is that is truly much more a comedy than just another romance series.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Fantasy, Surreal, Adventure, Comedy

2300.jpg

Two good friends, a boy and a girl, are depressed because they have to move out and will lose contact. But before that happens, lots of crazy adventures and fantasies as if they had fallen into Wonderland assault our poor young couple. They have great chemistry and additionally there is a poignant coming of age story behind all the slapstick comedy.

***Less Recommended Anime, but still worth it:***

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
Comedy, School, Military, Slice of Life

75260.jpg

The second season of this anime, subtitled Fumoffu, forgets the serious tone of a boring mecha/action series that the first season had and makes a worthwhile comedy.

Cromartie High School
Comedy, School, Delinquents, Surreal

13390.jpg

A high school. Full of people who really don't look like teenagers. And delinquents. And a robot. And Freddy Mercury. And lots of surreal humor.

Time of Eve
Science Fiction, Episodic, Slice of Life, Character Growth

19480.jpg

Asimov, the Anime. In a society with robots (and the three Laws of Robotics!), a teenager discovers thanks for a fortuitous encounter that there is another way to treat robots than just simple machines. Short and sweet, though the visual style is lacking.

Nodame Cantabile
Comedy, School, Romance, Music

11986.jpg

Pure, classic romantic comedy between a serious and talented guy and a totally disastrous gal, which in truth hides a great potential as musician. Opposites attract and all that.

GunBuster
Science Fiction, Action, Epic, Drama

51985.jpg

It starts slow, but in time it reaches an epicness and a final full of emotion consecrated this series. Check out Diebuster too, different in style in a way, but also worthwhile.

Mononoke + Ayakashi Japanese Classic Horror last arc
Supernatural, Episodic, Historical, Horror

20713.jpg

A specialist spirit exorcist travels across feudal Japan taking care of the hardest curses with psychological analysis and investigative work. Additionally you can trip balls with the excellent art style.
I have to clarify that the series Ayakashi is an anthology with 3 or 4 stories about ghosts, and the last story of Ayakashi is where the main character appears for the first time (and the arc is pretty good!). Mononoke is a spinoff of that story.

Mawaru Penguindrum
Mystery, Supernatural, Drama, romance, Comedy, Symbolism

30238.jpg

A strange mix of supernatural mystery, forbidden love, past sins of parents, comedy and decent character growth, which at some point is invaded more and more for the author penchant for symbolism. For some that will the the Achilles' Heel of the series, but even if it's true the last quarter falters somehow, the series taken as a whole is recommendable.

Code Geass
Adventure, Science Fiction, Action, Drama, Comedy, Mystery

50331.jpg

Mechas, action, fanservice, super powers, mind games, science fiction, twists, comedy, drama, school, love, adventure. Anime at its finest.
If anime is a messy train crash, at least.

Sakamichi no Apollon
High School, Music, Drama, Romance

79781.jpg

Love, drama, and young people discovering jazz. Good direction, even though the story falters a bit at the end.

Chihayafuru
Sports, High School, shojo

35749.jpg

A different sports series, first because it uses a very different sports (a card game!), second because it brings a different sensibility from the world of shojo.

Crest of the Stars
Science Fiction, Military, Romance, Action

5524.jpg

A 'pseudo-realistic' space opera, with a young couple love as drive for the story.

X - 1999
Action, Fantasy, Romance, Tragedy

17167.jpg

Apocalypse and troubled teenagers with powers in one of the most famous works done by CLAMP. You will have melodrama and decent action.

Gungrave
Mafia, Action, Drama

75724.jpg

While this series is framed in some stupid sci-fi video game story, most of the actual episodes form a long flashback, a standalone story of friendship, mafia, ambition and treason. In truth isn't very original at this point, but it's still good.

Dennou Coil
Science Fiction, Adventure, Kids, Augmented Reality

12844.jpg

A strange series with a realistic, intriguing future where augmented reality is an intrinsic part human society, protagonized by a group of children. An interesting exploration of that type of transformative technology, which feels a bit flawed as it never knows if it's supposed to be a children story or not.

Zipang
Historical, Fantastic, Military, Action, Drama

75740.jpg

Have you seen The Final Countdown, that 80s movie where a US Carrier and the crew time travel to WW2? Well, here we have the Japanese version! An AEGIS destroyer travels back to WW2, with a more interesting moral dilemma, as they know their side were the 'bad ones'. It has a good sense of realism, from military hardware to procedures or the fact their most dangerous weapon aren't missiles, but the library.

Simoun
Science Fiction, Drama, Romance, Mystery, Military, Yuri

29109.jpg

A science fiction story that feels different, a very original mix of military drama and romance between girls in a world where deciding your sex when you reach adulthood is the normal. The characters and their relationships are well developed, and there are some surprising development that I won't spoil. Also it has a nice tango-inspired soundtrack.

Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Romance, School, Comedy, Psychological

23877.jpg

Gainax gives their energetic hand, kinetic style, solid direction and penchant for psychological exploration (they just did Evangelion before this) to a... high school romance, where the main protagonist are together from the start. The results are worth watching.

Seirei No Moribito
Action, Adventure, Historical, Fantasy

50337.jpg

A more serious take on the fantasy 'journey' genre than usual with an adult, tough woman as main character.

Towards the Terra...
Science Ficiton, Action, Drama, Military

30979.jpg

Flashes of Battlestar Galactica here. A group of persecuted people in a far future controlled by super computers tries to escape to the original planet of Humankind: Earth.

Big Windup!
Sports, Comedy, School

20751.jpg

An interesting, tense high school baseball series. Pure sports, decent look in the relationship between the two main characters, competently done.

Baccano!
Supernatural, Action, Comedy, Mystery, 20s

14547.jpg

Fun adventures in the prohibition era America with a large cast of characters and interlinked plotlines.

Bakemonogatari
Romance, School, Mystery, Supernatural

75274.jpg

Slick supernatural mystery series with a nice romance, that is famous for its snappy dialogue and the distinctive art used.

Aoi Bungaku
Drama, Historical, Psychological, Suspense

17471.jpg

A more serious anime than usual, it's an anthology of adaptions of 'modern classics' of Japanese literature. Isolation, depression, loneliness, romantic drama, and redemption.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
Romance, School, Supernatural, Mystery, Drama

64435.jpg

Love story with a
soft
ghost. It has a decent dramatic backdrop, but the main attraction here is the no-holds barred romance.

Gosenzosama
Slice of Life, Comedy, Drama, Theatrical

19785.jpg

The dissolution of a traditional Japanese family once a time traveler comes to them. Very interesting direction.

Kyousou Giga
Fantasy, Adventure, Mystery, Action, Family

85431.jpg

Crazy, kinetic, outworldish anime full in a world different than ours with other rules. It eventually crashes with a pretty flawed last part, but I think it's interesting enough.

Silver Spoon
Slice of Life, School, Comedy, Romance

49237.jpg

No magic and no robots in this one. Unless you count an advanced automated harvester vehicle as robot, of course. Follow the normal days of school and related adventures in an agricultural college in Japan.

Space Dandy
Science Fiction, Action, Episodic, Adventure, Comedy

56611.jpg

Fun adventures in space of a dandy guy. This has trick, it's a partial recommendation, as it's very episodic and it also the quality of each episodes vary wildly, I believe the staff also changed so in a way it's an anthology. If you want to know, my recommended episodes are, in Season 1: 2-4-5-6-9-10-13 and Season 2: 1-3-4-5-7-8-10-11-13.

Barakamon
Slice of Life, Comedy, Family

59321.jpg

A little suprise, as usually I don't like that much traditional Slice of Life stories. A young but famous calligrapher artist goes to live in the country for a while as an 'exile'. There, he will learn a different way of life.

Scum Wish
Drama, Romance, School, Character growth

83937.jpg

A high school romance drama with an adult style, it's pretty unique in that regard. It has a solid direction, an attractive style and even if I think the end is a bit meh, it's still a recommendation from me.

Erased
Supernatural, Mystery, Crime, Romance

77957.jpg

A flawed thriller story with a serial killer, and time traveling to try to stop him. Yeah, the end is underwhelming, but let's not forget the journey is also an important part of a story, and it has several good episodes too. And maybe you like more the end than me!

The Great Passage
Slice of Life, Office, Romance

81624.jpg

A eccentric office worker with a passion for words but bad with people does the work of his life: editing an dictionary. He will discover friends and love in the long journey that the dictionary needs.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Comedy, School, Parody

66083.jpg

Fun comedy where a high school boy secretly draws shojo manga, he will search inspiration in his wacky repertoire of friends. As we will see, maybe life doesn't work like a shojo.

Parasyte
Action, Science Fiction, Thriller, Romance, Horror

73178.jpg

An alien invasion of body-stealers is coming, but a boy and one of the aliens will learn about each other in unexpected way. Not as good as the manga, but still decent.

Death Parade
Supernatural, Episodic, Drama, Thriller

71553.jpg

After death, you are judged. But very strange judges in a very strange setting. Some light drama in episodic stories, who will go to Heaven, and who will go to Hell?

***Animes I can't really recommend because I haven't watched them! ...but I read and liked the original manga so maybe they are worth watching:***

Koi Kaze
Romance, Drama
61441.jpg

Bokurano
Science Fiction, Mystery, Tragedy, Psychological

2541.jpg

Emma
Romance, Slice of Life, Historical

80117.jpg

6793.jpg

Berserk
Action, Drama, Fantasy, Violence, Romance

18520.jpg

Q&A

-Where are the films? Only tv series?
Yeah, I was going to put a list of films, but it was smaller, and less interesting to be honest, so I chose to focus on tv series.
The list contained mostly what yo would expect: Ghibli stuff, Gainax stuff, Otomo, Hosoda, Yuasa, Shinkai, Oshii, Satoshi Kon, and only a few things outside of that (like Colorful, the 2 Takeshi Koike films, Tekkon Kinkreet, Metropolis, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Tori No Uta and not a lot else)
Just google "top 30 anime movies" and you will have something similar!.

-Where is the best anime seris XYZ? How you dare not put in the list?
Because a) I haven't watched it or b) Your taste is terrible.

-And this classic ABC?
There are a few animes I have watched when I was young, like Heidi, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Lupin III, Ranma 1/2 or Nadia. I don't know how to start judging them with the heavy nostalgia factor influencing me, apart that most of them I watched many years ago, so to judge accurately I would have to re-watch them. In the end, I just ignored them.

All the shows from your list that I've seen are ones I enjoyed and would recommend (though not to everyone for varying reasons, like tolerance of certain anime tropes)

Was getting caught part of your plan?
Well, I'm glad Bebop and OPM are on this list as always, but...

It's a solid list
lacks Utena but Mawaru is there
. Literally my top 5 is here haha.

I have Utena unfinished. I had intended to go on but months and months passed... ironically, I think I left it in the point where it stops being so repetitive.
Some day.

Well, I'm glad Bebop and OPM are on this list as always, but...

Gundam War in the Pocket was acceptable, if you want to know. Maybe it could have a place on the second list.

Cool, FMAB and LOGH are in. Other animes don't matter anyway.
I will let the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume he just forgot to add the word brotherhood there, and not that he is refering to the inferior first FMA show

How could you not have watched Gintama if you watch so much animes :-(
To a lesser extend, it's also missing Haruhi, but the best part is the film, whixh you don't include in your list.

Pretty good list though from the show featured I've seen.

How the hell does Penguindrum make the list but not Utena?

And friends don't let friends watch Kare Kano. Friends tell them to read the manga.

Like others say, missing a few notables, but this is your list and for the most part nails a good amount of "high shelf" stuff. x)

How is that? The manga becomes quite the slog eventually and I've lost all enthusiasm to continue (think I finished the play with the android stuff).

The anime's production obviously fell apart and ended in the middle of nowhere, yet it is still godly in spite of that.

Time to see which one of these aren't already in my group's voting pool and make some additions...

Edit: Looks like twelve new ones. Thanks. :)

I can't realistically dispute a lot of this because I've barely watched anime in a decade but there is some stuff in here I'd consider C-tier at best.

And like 1 of my top 10 (Haibane Renmei) is on there haha.

'But why isn't ABC in the list if it's excellent?'

Look, now that I see at the list all together, my conclusion is that I watched too much anime, not too little.

:p

Why no Shirobako? Why no JoJo Part 4? Why no Shirokuma Cafe??? Why do you hate what I like so much OP?

Jk jk good stuff overall and has a good mix of all kinds of shows for everyone's tastes.

I like Death Note, Kill la Kill, Berserk, One Punch Man and Cowboy Bebop

I am as casual as it gets btw, probably seen 15 or fewer series in my life

I do not agree with all your choices, and as others have said you do need to watch more pre-2000 anime, but nevertheless a pretty solid list here with good variety of subject matter and popularity. Good job.

Where the hell is Eat Man 98?! Trash list.

But seriously that's a great OP/article and will be my anime viewing guide for a while. I've probably only seen a third of these.

There's 3, 4 titles on the list from before 2000?

And one of them is the extremely overrated LOGH. It's like OP watches too much ThatAnimeSnob or something, anyone could know about these shows by simply going on MAL top 100. Not a bad list overall but the bad memes kill it, sure you recommend some good shows but this is far from being an exhaustive list of all the good stuff out there

Pretty solid list, if you're making a 21st century recommendation thread. Woefully short of pre-2000 stuff, which is where all the best anime remains to this day.

Nice list OP, but your description for ping pong is lacking! No mention of the godlike OST or how the first episode gives more character development than some anime do in an entire season

Watch mob psycho on twitch soon, same creator as OPM and would fit your tastes

No Lotte no Omocha.

No Boku no Pico.

No Kodomo no Jikan.

No School Days.

No Oreimo.

This entire list is garbage and OP should feel bad!

This thread will serve me well... wanting to get back into Anime. Last series I watched was Ano Hana. Can imagine that if the OP does not cover a series that is beloved, pitchforks will be raised lol.

For newcomers to anime, this list is perfect. They can watch those titles and move on to better titles, either old or new.

I will not add my recommendations thus skewing the list. Except maybe Kaleido Star

latest

One of the most memorable series when I was introduced to anime. Animation, drama, suspense, colors, characters. Perfect series. Gonzo's best work.

Just a few corrections and contributions:

-Koi Kaze anime is as good as the manga, though both are a little controversial for some

-Same for Berserk, though TV can never reach the manga art style.

-Saikano manga was very good when I read it back then. Now I am not sure I'd like it though. Still, avoid the anime at all costs! One of the worst adaptations I've seen and Gonzo's worst works

This reminds me, does anyone have saved the infamous animegaf 'List'? Did it ever exist in the first place or was always an abstract concept called 'The List', containing pure meaning??

That anime I like didn't make it to the list, what the hell OP?

Is the name you are searching to no avail one that says 'Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA'?

Nice effort put into the list! It's be great if you could also include if a show is streamable on any service, and what service(s)! But that's a lot of extra research.
