You mean the same Reddit that is supported by tencent? Yes China's internet censorship is fucked up but that's no reason to stop globalisation. Tencent isn't China, just as Google isn't the US.

Yeah, because globalization has worked so well. Pffft!

I really hope Discord isn't affected by this. It's such a great platform, especially for the gaming sector.

Barcelona, Spain, Europe.
It wouldn’t do anything to those developers because tencent doesn’t own Epic, nor Unreal Engine. And even if they did, every developer that uses Unreal Engine would have a big list of alternatives to move to. They could also make their own engine.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world, and it wouldn’t have society altering effects. To believe so is pretty laughable.

It doesn’t matter though, because the US government was too short sited to see that tencent is as big of a problem as WeChat. For now...
So what is this big list of alternatives to Unreal Engine?
If you'd find an alternative that has all the features and tools that yoi need for your game, once you have the game running on an engine, porting it to another engine is a colosal task. Small devs that have used a relevant ammount of their budget, would not beable to afford it.

And yeah, for an indie company, developing an engine is almost a suicide. Some do it because they want to make an engine and spend many resources on that. I is definitely not worth it for a small or medium-small team.

Hopefully, it won't come to this

Any time China invests in American companies, censorship increases.

Reddit is literally choking of censorship now. It wasn't always like this. It used to be my favorite place on the Internet. I recently checked my posts and realized I hadn't made a post in months. I doubt I'll go there much longer.

After giving it some thought, it would be absolutely hilarious for Trump to declare that the DoJ will not prosecute people for pirating the Unreal Engine and other Chinese IP. They have infiltrated and stolen from US universities and corporations for decades - I think it is only fair.

Development on the engine grounds to a halt and the majority of the industry is using that same engine 10 years later because it's 'free'. Graphics never get better.

That's what I'm saying. Everyone will find an angle to do awful things. Probably the CCP has a justification that makes sense to them.

While "reeducation" camps are the limit for Americans, I bet that there are many other countries that find what the US does way beyond the line. For example putting illegal immigrant's kids in cages.

None of it is good. Nobody really has a moral position to point fingers to anyone else.
Not that I'm saying it's ok, but a few children in cages is not equal to literally exterminating a group of people. That is like saying stubbing your toe is just as hurtful as decapitation.

Not to mention those people were committing a crime by skipping the line and immigrating illegally.

There’s quite a few there. Companies change software all the time. Game developing companies included. Sure, it’s a pain, but it’s not impossible.

And just one more time, to clarify. IF tencent was banned from making transactions with the US, that doesn’t mean Unreal Engine would be banned. At all. Tencent doesn’t own it, so I’m not sure why you keep arguing something that isn’t a reality.

Stop the conspiracy theories and face the truth. We are not living out some hyper woke, hyper partison article from Vox, Vice, or The Atlantic. This has nothing to do with China wanting Trump to win. Since Trump started being tougher on China, especially post pandemic, more countries are speaking out on what relying on China has cost their country as well. More and more countries are trying to rally together and stop China from taking over other countries through spying, intellectual theft, or through financial means.

UK calls on EU for tougher approach on China

Germany and EU must get tougher on China

Also, who said anything about Trump being smart? The man has reasonable intelligence and he has always had this vision since his early days on television (80's-90's) when speaking out against American companies selling out to China or the dangers of doing so.
You do know that his businesses have been buying Chinese made supplies, plus he owes china a lot of money right now? Kind of fishy to me why he wants to be "tough" on china while he owes them a lot of money, plus also buys their product.... look beyond the stupid "woke" shit you spout and look for yourself. Just because something is liberal or whatever you deem it to be does not mean it is false.

Also "reasonable" must be a very different definition coming from you than me, he isn't intelligent and has been called out plenty of times with his ignorant rhetoric very recently. He isn't intelligent at all (maybe for country bumpkin folks he is), and doesn't deserve to be in power what so ever.

No, I don't want a lost of game engines, I want a list of altrrnatives to Unreal Engine. Alternatives comparable to the performance, fearures and tools to UE4. I asked because you may find a couple only and they are still way, way behind.

Companies don't change engine all the time. It takes time to change and it takes time to learn the new engine for all devs working on the games, from programmers to artist, animators, designers, sound designers, etc...
To change engine usually you change project, changing engine mid project is already a failure and a massive hit, if not the end.

Companies don't make engines all the time. They did several gens before where the engine and the game where almost the same thing and AAA games where smaller than indie games today.
To make a game engine you need a team desivated to ot for years before you can start using it.
You can start a game making an engine as long as you a) are a big company and have the resources (money, developers & time) needed, or b) you are making a very small game with a very, very limited feature and tool set.
And b) only makes sense if you want to make something very specific that other available engines don't provide

This thread is filled with the dreaded realisation that the Anglo-Saxon world is no longer the centre of the world. The political move discussed is a reptile brain response to the complex issue of a multi-polar world where not only US wealth dictates the terms of engagement.

As citizens of small countries, we have always had to relate to the giants in the playground. It is interesting to see how hard this new world is to accept for the Anglo-Saxons that have only seen the immediate post-WWII world.

Tencent... Are they responsible for any great games?

He's only doing this to try and gather a few more supporters, I think, starting to mix his racist deal with xenophobia again... Hope it doesn't work too well! (sorry, overseer, have I said the wrong thing here?)

Anyway, I don't really think Tencent do much beyond pedal addictive games stuffed with microtransactions, right? So, I don't mind :)

Edit: I think there's plenty of space on this forum for people from either political background. If Trump supporters think Biden is [whatever you can think of], people who oppose Trump should feel free to call it how they see it without being brushed aside as "Reee" hacks.. i think trump supporters should be proud of their racism and xenophobia rather than feigning hurt feelings about it~ what's the phrase? you can't have your cake and eat it too? Maybe that's slightly wrong..

We are very lucky that the USA, with all it’s flaws and mistakes, is the one making the calls and being in charge.

You don’t want a world in which China or Russia can do whatever they want.

You are right that we have been lucky that has been the case. Throughout my upbringing, the US was seen as the light on the hill. Recently though, the US is acting out of fear instead of playing chess. Fear is a very bad foundation for decisions.

Well, Google, Facebook, Ios, Windows, Android are on everyone's home and devices and are american based companies, also considering all the NSA fiasco and Prism/Eschelon stuff I don't really get why as a European I should trust Trump and America more than China. tbh Trump seems like a charlatan if you compare him to the Chinese leader.

Not defending China at all, I am just stating that there are 2 sides on a coin, and that If I want my privacy I should go live in a cave.

I, for some reason agree with trump. Tiktok is the cancer of apps on mobile. For me it’s a total bulbasaur piece of f*ckin shit. Also I don’t like how China treats its people when it comes to work etc. They need to cool off a little so for me Trump is doing the right thing. I know that for some companies it will be hard but everyone will adapt sooner or later. Also that means more work in America (I talk for later years).

Maybe I’m mistaken, I don’t know.

Yes, of course.
Its always a white thing.

Its definitely can't be a thing where one country is concerned about another country (famous for human rights violations, censorship, IP theft, spying) infiltrating every facet of another (and every other) country's ways of existence. Its also definitely not about these domestic companies groveling and selling their souls to chase extra money.

No. Its not any of that.

It's definitley a white thing. Its always only just a white thing.

It's regarding all of the data mining that the tiktok app does.

Valid point, but that's the problem. There needs to be manufacturing over here and elsewhere around the world. Maybe it's triple+++ the cost but we would pay it knowing we're not giving money to China. The more the OPs mentality is accepted the closer we can get to a more just reality.
South America with some investment on infra-structure could easily substitute China. Take Brazil, for example, $1 US Dollar equal R$5 (Reais), minimum wage here is around R$1000, so $200. That may not be as cheap as China but it keeps things locally in the Americas and at much lower costs than manufacturing in the US.

Brazil has the raw materials, Brazil has the land, Brazil has the working force, Brazil is a very good option geographically, it "only" requires the technology and the opportunity.

Intriguing, but don’t have some pretty strict economic regulations?

Im with it, but perhaps he could try leading here?

Plus is his daughter going to give up the shit load of patents and Chinese business shes amassed since he became president?

Or whatabout his daughters husband, Jared, sending his sister to China for the sake of selling real estate and promising easier immigration for chinese businessmen to America?

I don't care for either political party or person running for president. But this is bullshit posturing, while his family is caking the f*ck up off of chinese business lol.

Just calling a spade a spade. 🤷🏾‍♂️

It basically takes all of your data on your phone and sends it to a server in China without you knowing. It’s massive spyware.
So exactly like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and so on operative systems, devices and apps but but instead of sending all your data and giving access to camera, mic, gps position, watch its screen, what do you type and so on to intelligence agencies and ads companies from USA and some western countries.

It would be nice to ban Google, Apple, Microsoft and so on operative systems, devices and apps in all worldwide countries whose intelligence agencies aren't allowed to spy their data. Not sure if someone else other than China does it.

At this very moment, hundreds of game developers are feverishly trying to get their next-gen game up and running on GameMaker Studio
I'm one of them, not kidding. I'm working on a GMS game for Switch and if possible I'd like to release it some day in the future on next gen xD

There are strict labor regulations, sure, but when it comes to exportation Brazil is already among the biggest... what it doesn't have is the technological infra-structure, so it relies mainly on agriculture, raw materials and other commodities, the exception being its automotive industry that feeds a good chunk of South America.

With proper investment, I'm sure it could become a bigger player on production and manufacture... besides, deals, agreements and compromises could be made, that's the kind of opportunity no sane country would simply ignore, even if it requires adjustments to regulatory laws... biggest problem I see would be partisan policies and interests possibly changing every 4 years on both parties... who's to say Democrats or the Brazilian Left wouldn't back down... China has everyone by the ball exactly because of that, they ideologically infiltrated everyone while also providing the lowest costs, making themselves necessary.

It's a tough road Trump is taking but it's a necessary one for economical independence of the US and the west. I'd be glad if we, the southern neighbors, could be part of a bigger change that would benefit both countries.

Please elaborate - I am honestly not sure what you are hinting at unless you assume I am younger than I am.
US history, as with all history, is full of decisions that were founded on fear. Acting like we ever made decisions not based on fear is silly.

Fuck China and all of their bullshit. They are solely responsible for the situation we are in...HOW MANY TIMES NOW!!!! Perhaps the next virus will finally do the trick and totally wipe out the world's economy. How many people have had to bury loved ones and couldnt even be with them while they took their last breath? Thank China. Oh, but muh video games and my tik tok. Fuck them. I'll work harder, more hours to pay the extra costs for non Chinese shit.

I haven't heard an apology from their leadership yet for their sloppy science and money hats to the WHO to cover for them. Yeah, yeah Drumph bad, but he's the ONLY motherfucker who has said shit about China and stood up to them. Go back and watch him on Phil Donahue in the 80s talking about how dangerous China was. Remember the tariffs and how people were crying about how it would destroy the economy? Well, actually, maybe those people were right because that communist hell hole gave all of us a nice present. Enough of people bowing down to China and stand up for YOUR country.
