I still remember some of the posters here had predicted Nintendo Switch sales will fall off the cliff in 2020 as the next gen consoles hype makes people forget about Switch. Nintendo didn't have the big AAA 3rd party games to sustain its life against those consoles.

New Pokemon, New 3D Mario, New Zelda, and etc are the system sellers for Nintendo. These games aren't available on XSX and PS5.

But let's sober up a little. It's about time for them to introduce at least a moderately boosted unit. Too many games for this system are just barely able to run. Even a moderate boost to CPU, GPU, and RAM would make a huge difference with this library, and probably a ton of people would then double dip on hardware. Just seems like too much of an easy win for them to just leave it on the table.

And they might leave it on the table by introducing new hardware that isn't a substantial enough improvement, but that doesn't mean we don't need it. They might not need it, but we do.

And if they don't start churning out some big titles in 2021, I wouldn't be surprised to see the system begin to lose momentum. It won't go off a cliff this year, but 2022 could be that cliff.

At EU series s have been available on stores quite easily on many countries.

Like, not even sold out on launch on some places and is off the shelf item

Interesting here in Japan everything is sold out including Xbox Series S/X but that's probably because there's practically zero supply here in the first place.

Wow almost half a million difference between PS5 and Xbox already. That Sony domination continues.
Also a great year to own a PS5 with some brilliant exclusives coming out.
440k is not a million, and we already knew there was less Xbox stock available compared to PS5.
We would need at least 6 months, if not a full year, of both consoles being widely available in stores, to get a true reflection of where we are at.

And the base Switch is still having stock issues in the US, Japan, and Europe.

It makes you wonder what's the ceiling of Nintendo Switch sales performance.
Its fucking impressive stuff. Seen a couple people on the train with this thing.
Might surprise my niece with one later on in the year.

Still no sources?

So we all just believe this?

I’m still in the X to doubt column. It seems like a well estimated figure, but by no means confirmed.

You can find the source on Reeee, he's a sales insider with NPD and Famitsu data.

I said almost half a million. You are so defensive that you don’t even read the post properly.

The PS5 is also limited in stock in case you haven’t noticed?

I wonder what the source is.

I am a bit surprised by how small the gap actually is between PS4 and XBO. You would have thought it would have been a huge failure, listening to enlightened experts on the internet, and how important the "superior experience" on PS4 was for multiplat. This shows pretty well that people don't care much about these differences.

Launch consoles getting outsold by an older and underpowered competitor is hilarious.

Nintendo right now:

Actually thats normal. Usually consoles sales peak at around 3rd or fourth year of their life. PS2 outsold both X360 and PS3 in 2006.

Did the PS2, or the PS3 or the PS4 sell more than all the other consoles combined when there was a new console launch?

please excuse my bad english
Microsoft might make a comback mid-gen. They have a ton of high class studios that will probably release their first big exclusives in 2 - 3 years from now on. I fully expect Elder Scrolls 7 ( and to an extend also starfield) to be system sellers. Also, Microsoft is traditionally doing well in the anglosphere, mainland europe, middle east and asia is probably a bloodbath for them.

I don't really know, but its normal occurence at the beginning of each new gen to be outsold by older hardware. All console sales follow a similar sales curve, launch shortage, gradual increase, peak, decrease sales ..etc
I've searched for NPD reports during the PS4 and Xbox One launches and at least in those cases it's not true.
In the month of November, the PS4 and Xbox One sold more than any other console, portable or not. In December and January they both sold more than the PS3 and X360, although a little less than the 3DS.
It doesn't seem like a normal gen transition at all being so supply limited

For about the last 3 years, every MS hater has claimed "PS4 outsold the Xb1 by at least 2 to 1," and went completely unopposed almost every time. If you repeat something enough, eventually people will believe it.

That being said, I don't pretend to know the hard numbers for worldwide sales. But if these numbers are correct at 29m to 34m, then that means the XB1 sold almost nada everywhere else. That doesn't seem likely to me, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to explain just how poor the XB1 sold everywhere outside the US. Looking at what we do know..

The PS4>XB1 in Japan. XB1 basically a no show.
The PS4>XB1 in Europe. Not Japan bad, but bad.

UK, Australia, Canada. These countries were competitive. PS4 surely outsold the XB1, but the ratio was likely closer to US than 2 to 1.

Mexico XB1>PS4 Not a no show, but bad.
S. America XB1>PS4 I haven't seen these numbers in a couple years, but XB1 was outselling the PS4. Unless the PS4 made a comeback, I'd imagine it's still the same. Except for Argentina, which usually goes PS4.

So my numbers could be off, but seeing how large the US market is. It's hard to believe that 2 to 1 figure that's been the gospel here over the last few years.

Sooo... Who's gonna torch me first?

PS4 and XB1 data are correct just missing November and December of 2020... we have leaked data over time.

The big difference comes outside US...
US is over 60% of the sales of XB1 (~50m WW).
US is around 30% of the sales of PS4 (>110m WW).

Funny when PS4 unable to outsell XBO+NSW in 2017.
Its not really a fair comparison.

XBO + NSW in 2017 are one console in the middle of its life and a new console with 10 months of sales. = About 9 million sales.

PS5 +XBS in 2020 are two new consoles with two months of sales = about 3.4 million sales. (Even if you add the older consoles as well this number isn't anywhere near 9 million)

Switch's figures for 2020 are very impressive, but PS4's 2017 sales were strong as well.

You're 100% right but don't expect to Xbox to not be outsold at least 2:1 WW.

YOU'RE setting yourself for disappointment

note to insecure fanboys, both sold what they could produce. has nothing to do with demand.

With how much fanboyism and related insecurity is going on, I gotta ask: Why the fuck do you actually care whether PS5 sold X amount or Switch sold Y amount, etc? Like, if you're not a shareholder, there's no point in getting an emotional response out of those values.

This is what I was going to post, the US makes up the lions share of Xbox sales, whereas for both Playstation and Switch it's obviously a major market, but they'd both still be ahead of Xbox in sales even without anything having been sold there.

Hell, I'm pretty sure 60% is the low end estimate for how much of the Xbox's units the US makes up. It could well be nearer to 70%.

Will be very interesting to see how things go once stock is freely available, but it's certainly not a good start for the XSS/X to already be significantly behind the XO and to have an even bigger sales gap with the PS5 than they saw in 8th gen.

All I see is a shitload of disingenuous posts in here pretending like stock isn't 100% sold out of both next gen consoles. This should be production age, not sales age.

No wonder Microsoft don't want to share numbers anymore.

Huh? those are pretty damn close, much closer than most thought I'm sure. They sold every unit they were able to produce, Sony produced slightly more since they started production earlier.

The problem with handwaving away sales numbers with "it's just a handheld", "not a real console", etc., is that some (such as myself) actually use the Switch as their primary console (and in my case only console). It is docked 90% of the time and since I 'only' have a 1080p TV I'm perfectly happy with it since my preferred games are produced by Nintendo. It seems like some people actually believe you can't prefer to have only a Nintendo Switch if you're a gamer.

Sure you also get a large boost from handheld only players (Switch Lite) but it's inaccurate to deny a substantial amount of Switch owners make it their primary home console. I have nothing against Sony and Microsoft so I don't really care about sales numbers but I do care about minimizing the value of the Switch among gamers. (I've been gaming since 1982.)

Well, those american numbers are not bad at all for MS. Not perfect, but not bad either.
As European I'm used to seeing 3:1 or 5:1 PS/XB ratios.
As a Neogaffer I would expect a 100:1 ratio or something like that.

The gap between PlayStation and Xbox is much smaller in North America than it is elsewhere. If we look at a couple of countries in continental Europe and East Asia at the end of 2019 the gaps are much bigger.
I don't have a nice graph for it, but in Taiwan PS4 was at 1.1 million while Xbox One was at 60,000.

The only reason I'm happy with the numbers is because I have high hopes this may translate to more games, things I've been hoping for that might need a bigger or more diverse audience.

I dont think this proves much of anything considering suppy constraints, it really says nothing other than ms shipped that many consoles.

Yeah we know PlayStation is a lot more popular than Xbox in many many countries. They also had the lead last gen in pretty much all countries.

Nintendo dominating the US market is very good for the industry. They were no longer needed to make hyper realistic graphics with massive budgets with 0 creativity to sell on 4k duo because Switch is there with an option.

That's MS problem because they are unable to produce more Xboxes and also problem is that more people want XSX ,not XSS. And you can find XSS easily across the Europe and in Brazil and Mexico where Xbox is popular. And also according to TSMC, Sony ordered around 2:1 more chips for PS5 than MS for Xbox.

Xbox isn't supply constrained. Across the vast majority of Europe, XSS is pretty much available in stores. Of course XSX isn't, nor PS5. Well, it's Microsofts problem to launch cheap "next-gen" console called XSS.

Holy. Switch seems to be closing the gap.
Switch will surpass XB1 total sales in US during 2021, maybe it will even surpass PS4 total sales in December 2021 if it has another very very strong year like 2020 was.

Less than 2M PS5? no wonder most people didnt get it. Half of that went to scalpers the other was spread over the globe.
