Tom Henderson - PS5 redesign planned for 2023 with detachable disc drive

Sounds like an option for gamers with digital only systems.

Like all peripherals, it'll cost more to buy a digital console + external drive vs. buying the disc console straight up. But for gamers who want to add a drive later, it'll be there.

For the same reason, retailers won't carry the games then. That was Gamestop's largest beef when these online storefronts started to kick off in the 360/PS3 era for consoles, and the manufacturers were trying to sell the idea (to the public) of digital being cheaper due to lack of supply chain and materials being printed/stamped. Gamestop threatened to pull shelf space. At that time, they had pull.
GameStop will be dead in a few years. Retailers like Amazon will just sell more PSN cards.

Jimbo quote from 2020 on PS5 Digital & retailers:

"We're not having any problem with specialist retail stocking this model," Ryan continues. "It's interesting, there is quite a nice ecosystem that's sprung up for specialist retail, around selling cash cards for people who don't have a credit card... There's a list of reasons why people need these cards. I don't want to get into the back and forth of the margin discussions between ourselves and our retailers, but we think we've found a way to make that work together."

We'll see. I think it will take a good bit of market retraction first. Whether willingly, or unwillingly from these manufacturers.

So going through some of the replies in the ResetERA thread on this and once again, the usual shit-stirrers at it with the dumbest FUD. Our good friend Sullivan:

This might be the slim model. Instead of launching a smaller model thats $100 off, they can just release this for $400 and make the digital PS5 the "default PS5" so people are technically saving $100!

Do these people stop to think of what they're saying, or do they just want hot takes knowing the moderators will protect the stupidity? A PS5 slim with an option for a disc drive attachment, and the PS5 Digital as it currently exists, are near-functionally THE SAME THING!! Even the casual customer would see the similarity so why would Sony do something profanely stupid so as to make the PS5 Digital the replacement for the PS5 Disc?

Any person either not high off fumes or not being disingenuous would know that from the description of what's being listed here, if anything Sony would make the new slim model sans aa drive a replacement for the PS5 Digital, and a SKU with the new disc drive attachable pre-bundled the PS5 Disc replacement, both occupying their respective pricing tiers. This move is to help in the manufacturing logistics; it allows them to easily adjust the distribution of each SKU type depending on perceived market demand, and still provide the exact same functionality as the previous iterations, at their respective price brackets.

Which makes this giant wall of BS from Fatal Nutritionist:

It is relevant, because the new consoles price may be lower than the PS5 but there's no guarantee it will be lower than the PS5D since the article clearly says that it has the same specifications. If it does the only cost savings will be what's around the internals.

it's not another option, you have PS5 and PS5D now, you are removing one option, and then removing a feature from the first one and charging more for it if people want to have what they could have gotten before the revision. Some defenses I see with these consoles sometimes are truly baffling, they could rob you blind and you'll say it's a choice or a reasonable option.

No it doesn't, what are you talking about? Modules didn't even work with phones which is the platform you think it would work with. What you're defending is similar to Apple removing the charging cable, and making you use wifi charging, otherwise you have to pay $200 for a lightning cable to be able to charge your phone without a wireless pad even though they created new charging cables that work with the phone, and are better for the battery and are more optimized for charging than the wifi pad. Now you are losing out on a key feature of a game consoles that the original PS5 launched with, taking it out and charging a premium for it when you could have just brought a PS5 before they did it without the premium.

No one argues this you made it up.

The issue is the people who make up a sizable amount of the industry that use physical, which are still most countries I'd say. and even countries like the US and others with the tech, are not going to buy a digital consoles because it's not either possible or feasible compared to getting a disc.

You also like many people misread the industry percentages of "digital" yes much of the industry is "digital" that doesn't mean that everyone is downloading digital games, that means many games are released digitally, and you can look at steam or the eshop to see the varying quality of these digital games, same with mobile where physical isn't even an option. Physical games still sell 10's of millions and bring in billions of revenue especially on consoles. You're acting like that 80% of the industry game sales being digital means that 80$ of consumers are buying digital, this is a fundamental misunderstanding of statistics.

...a waste of text since they seem similarly perplexed over what manner this new model would logically fit itself into the existing product line let alone its benefits in managing production logistics more efficiently. Again, PS5 Slim discless is effectively a PS5 Digital. PS5 Slim with disc drive is effectively a PS5 Disc. However now it's just one base model to worry about instead of two base models where one has the disc drive built right into it and the other does not.

So many people want to pretend they know what they're talking about, try being fancy with their words, but at the end of the days it's just more BS.

It's just interesting seeing the type of disingenuousness the mods there allow towards Sony-related topics that tend to otherwise get shut down with Xbox/Microsoft-related topics. Users who argue until they're blue in the face how speculating on a GamePass price increase is FUD, yet are insisting a new PS5 model with a detachable disc drive is very much only so Sony can sneak in a price increase.

Having...literally no proof...on such claims. But they do it anyway. I think it's fun sometimes to single them out so they can't hide behind a mass identity.

If a slim model plus the disk drive is the same price as the current disk drive one, what's the problem? Lol some people just want to be angry at everything without the full info.

If this new model is true, nobody knows the price yet, but one thing is certain. Adding the optical drive will cost a lot more than Sony/stores breaking even on it.

So unless the new model is reduced in price where adding an optical drive makes it go back to $500, there's no way I see the combo being the same price as the current disc system right off the bat.

I'd bet this detachable disc drive will be usable with the obvious PS5 Pro once it releases later on.
This is honestly good news and this way Sony can produce even more units and faster.

C'mon just hide it behind your TV so you don't have to look at it that much.

Seriously though, this seems like a good move to consolidate the manufacturing lines into 1 for the console and a lesser one for the drive unit.

Aesthetics bro as the the digital version was not initially designed with detachable peripherals in mind.
I guess we'll see id much rather just see a revised de and reg ps5 instead this seems like itll compromise the size of the next de if theres a slot reserved for a disc drive.

do not want.

i dont want to keep taking something out of a drawer.
and if i always leave it out, the drive might as well be integrated into the console.

integrated drive or nothing.

the PS5 already detects external disc drives to a point, the firmware simply locks it from actually playing anything from it. but it actually shows up in the main menu and even what you insert into it shows up

Sounds like bullshit.

nah the code is already in the system. it is simply blocking you from playing anything from external. but if you connect an external drive and put a movie in you will even see the movie's icon pop up in the PS5 menu

They had it planned all all along ;)

Just needs an unlock in the firmware.

Ummm I doubt this is the plan.
Let's assume this is the Slim, it still makes more sense for them to keep a model with the integrated disc drive to justify a higher cost.
If they drop the drive then the baseline cost for them becomes that of the digital model.

I suspect that this news is not 100% accurate and it's mixing two different things, a Slim chassis for next year and an external disc drive being in the work as an option for digital owners if they change idea at some point.

Cant they just make an external drive for the digital version?
The current digital model is being sold for a discount because it can’t play disc & used games. Forces sales to PSN.

I doubt Sony will ever let the current PS5 Digital ever connect to a disc drive.

This report basically says Sony will effectively kill off the digital only model. So I’d expect a price of $450 minimum.

It will probably be £389 for the console and £99 for the disc drive.
I’d hope so, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony try to normalise ‘premium’ prices (£499 for the digital console alone).

I suspect it’ll be like this

$400 PS5 Digital Edition
$500 PS5

$450 PS5 (slim)
$500 PS5 (slim) + Disc Drive (bundle)
$70 Disc Drive (standalone)

I think Sony wants to increase the base price from the $399 they’re at right now. This is a clever way to do it.

PS5 DE is only $400 cuz it’s digital ONLY. A PS5 that can add a BDD via USB isn’t digital only any more, just digital by default. So they don’t have to label it as a “Digital Edition” either. With this reported new slim model they can effectively kill off the DE and effectively cut the price of the PS5 to $450 for those who don’t care about the disc drive.

Most people are buying the $500 PS5 disc model, like 80% or more, yet last quarter 80% of PS5 games sold were digital. Sony knows they can just sell the PS5 slim as digital by default and offer the disc drive as an option cuz most people won’t bother buying it.

It just hit me that next year's black friday Sony could have a single PS5 model out there selling at 400$/€ and Spider-Man 2.

They know what they are doing, lmao.

Doubt a Pro model is coming any time soon
Me too. 2025 probably.

PS5 disk drive is paired to the motherboard so it's unlikely this rumor is true
Aren't you thinking about the SSD? This is about the disc reader only.

Seems doable. Although I think the external drive will be $100 or more. I dont see how someone going from the base unit to bse + drive is only $20 more.

Wonder if the drive will be backwards compatible with the digital edition?
If it connects via USB-C I don't see why not.

If this rumour is true it suggests they are likely to change the design. Attaching some wierd curve shaped thing wouldn't work well. I suspect from the new square motherboard design that they will go for a square design again like the PS4 and have it stack.

Im just thinking now. Sony's security hasnt had the best track record. Letting someone connect an external drive to the system could potentially provide a way in for hackers to hack the system. Hackers/modders are prob drooling over something like this.

I’m actually a bit surprised MS haven’t made a disc reader for Series S yet. Kinda strange since they had the one for the X360 and champion the BC abilities of their boxes.
