It's fucking obvious mate.

Open up YouTube and you'll see a dozen anti-PS videos. We've had thread after thread created on this forum regarding Jim and how he's driving PS into the ground. There's anti-PS threads popping up everywhere.

Also this happened before and at the beginning of last gen too. At that time you could have sworn Xbox was going to put PS out of business the way some people were acting and posting all kinds of doom and gloom for Sony both on this forum and in the media. And just like last gen Sony was radio silent from the get go, just like they are now and ended up crushing the competition.

Also don't get the hate for Jim Ryan. He wouldn't be promoted to such an important role if he was an egg. PS is one of (if not) Sony's most important division so I'm sure you have higher ups who are looking in the best interest of the business by putting someone in charge who is competent and can push the division forward.
But nevermind Jim's record of turning Europe into Fortress Sony. Xbox would be lucky to even get a sniff in that region.

So yeah I'm of the opinion that there seems to be some sort of anti-PS/Sony media blitz and some forum members here are trying to amplify that. You even have some PS fans in this forum losing their shit (if they are even PS fans).
I get that we're going through a pandemic Everything is fucked up. People are at home more now than before the pandemic but this is getting absolutely ridiculous.
I'm not on the board of Sony nor do i have stocks with them so i only care about what games their ecosystem games wise and feature wise, they are shitting the bed hard there for me. Maybe you don't care but as someone that plays almost every genre, i was very much looking forward to Team Siren next horror game or having the next ND game be some PS5 tailored game and also it doesn't sit well that my digital library on PSvita and PS3, that i'm still chipping at got just much worse by not only removing the ability of remote downloads from the web, but now also removing the console store making me have to dive through hundred of items in the download list to even find and download something.
Almost forgot, 70 dollar first party games and even a Housemarque one?

It's just turd after turd mate, if you like eating shit, well, more power to you i guess. There are dung beetles after all.

It seems that a lot of people believe that PlayStation can't do anything because they don't have as much money as MS, and that's where the savage part comes up. If Sony needed to spend a crazy amount of money or make strategic partnerships they would do it to keep their dominance. Sony is not going to left their (probably most) important division just rest in their laurels watching MS and other companies eat the cake.
Fair enough.

While those that believe that Sony can't do anything are misguided, it's not incorrect to suggest they can't match move for move due to not having as much money as MS.... Well because they don't.

"If Sony needed to spend a crazy amount of money or make strategic partnerships they would do it..."
How you define "crazy" here is irrelevant, because as we covered above... MS could spend more "crazily" while doing it easier.

While it would be overblown to suggest Sony had no moves to make. At least to a certain extent though, whether Sony rests on it's laurels or not... There are aspects that Sony simply can't afford to compete in any longer when it comes to gaming. On some aspects, Sony has been forced into partnering with others that may or may not result in long term success. On others, it has largely been sidelined completely.

There was a time when Sony owned the largest piece of that cake you mentioned. These days Sony still maintains a sizable portion of it, but isn't the biggest dog at that table, and owns almost none of the ingredients that made the cake in the first place. Sony isn't partnering with Epic because they believe their in house engines can compete with Epic's. Just like they didn't partner with Microsoft because they believed their cloud storage and infrastructure could compete with Microsoft's. They're largely throwing whatever cash around they can to shore up their deficiencies, so as to not be left behind in an ever evolving market. Sure there are moves they can make such as throwing as much as they can into VR for instance. But the days of Sony savagely throwing it's weight around due to it's stranglehold on the gaming market disappeared a long long time ago.

Imo Sony really dont have as much money as MS.
And with their new leader, who seems a non-gamer, purely financial suit person. and outdated (wrt tech) even...
Think it is fair for some to come to such conclusions.
The results so far...dont seem to contradict our fears.
So far...Two weeks of bad PR. Woow.

The last time that was so much fear/concern/ doom and gloom about PlayStation was before the PS5 launch. There were a lot of "tech Experts and leakers" saying the PS5 was very weak and lacked some capabilities that XBSX had, like machine learning and Raytracing. It is obvious that a lot of people were just misinformed or plain ignorant about a lot of things.

The same is repeating now, people are in their right to be fearful, cry or blame an executive for "ruining their childhood", and as i already said this is good because is pressure for Playstation.

So you see Japan move away from Sony because they didn't play hard enough in portable gaming and just say oh well and think the same shift can't happen in the US when they don't have an answer to Gamepass?
What is you people's obession with not owning games. Sorry but I don't like games as a service or rentals. I like to own my games, or at least like psplus have them not go away. I can play any game i got on plus from 10 years ago, today. Game pass is overhyped on here and it's getting tiring hearing the zealots.

Tbf, ps5 is less powerful and lack newer hardware accelerators. As for RT, people were going off the github leak, and since mark cerny had to clarify, it was ok. At least mark decided to clarify....

At this point last gen, it was literally the exact opposite of how you remember it. At this exact point last gen the Xbox One had been ridiculed for months, there was still people claiming it wouldn't play used games or work at all offline. Despite having more exclusives compared to the PS4 at this point, it was obvious it was suffering a brand image problem that even Titanfall could rectify which had released only a month prior. Meanwhile this place was daily chock full of that video of people flocking past the XB1 in stores in order to rush for the PS4's. By this time the image of Mattrick crying "No" had even been cleverly photoshopped into it.

You can't simply just pretend things happened the opposite in order to support your narrative bud.

It sounds to me like the current leadership is simply more risk averse than the last.

I do find it kind of sad that Sony is so easily putting to bed their rich history. Sure there's PS Now and the odd "classic" mini console release, but Sony really kind of owes it to themselves and to history to preserve as much as they can and make it available to be enjoyed by later generations. The idea that they can look at the decades of dreams, hard work, and ingenuity and just walk away from it, is really surprising to me.

Sure. But having "all the money in the world" Is not a guarantee of anything either. What's is going With the windows store? = failure. (Valve stole the entire market of pc gaming from this huge company) How Netflix became the number one on streaming "without" money?. In other words: if the situation gets real bad for sony they would be capable to still be competitive even if that means bleeding money for a long time. (It wouldn't be the first time too).

In general I agree with what you are saying. But Sony can totally mimic almost any move xbox makes if they really, really need to.

Well yeah....on paper. Remember the "Is the Tools" meme? Their approach of Slower but wider vs narrow but faster is the only fascinating thing going on. As always is going to be on the devs to really show the true potential of these machines.

What i am saying is: XBSX is not strong enough to brute force better performance against the PS5. (In theory with better optimization XBSX should "win") but basically, these consoles have the same performance.

I agree. People need to take all these "Sony is doing so bad" rumors with a huge bottle of salt.

This seems like a coordinated effort against PS, turning each positive rumor into a negative one (MS is now working on Konami IPs, instead of Sony), or just presenting simple, everyday processes in a negative light, like Bend Studios pitch got rejected, OMG! Sony is doomed, while ignoring that they are working on a new IP which is likely riskier, but Sony trusts Bend to pull it off.

What "newer hardware accelerators"? Be specific (and please don't start repeating VRS, SFS, etc. because those are RDNA 2 features, which both consoles use). It will be machine learning and ray-traycing all over again.

Also, no, Mark Cerny didn't have to clarify anything. He first revealed raytracing in April 2019! Then it was explicitly confirmed that the ray-tracing is HW based in October 2019 (which is only possible in RDNA2). The Github leak and the RDNA1 ray-tracing began in 2020.

Those rumors were just FUD for those who didn't fully understand the tech.

It doesn’t get more Japanese than Ghost of Tsushima

I love this. Game was made in the US, directed by an American, written by a team of Americans with literally only the music and voice acting (when switched to Japanese) performed by a Japanese person.

The game is a full on American version of what they think Japan was like in the 1200's. Be like saying Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is an American game because it starts off on the George Washington bridge.

You and I remember the beginning of the last generation very differently, Hawking.

I remember that prior to the consoles being announced, sure, the expectation was that Microsoft couldn't lose. Sony had mustered a late-gen resurgence, but the PS3 had cost them far too dearly. Prior to both consoles being revealed, there was hot speculation that Microsoft had the generation in the bag; that's about the worst of it really, because no one foresaw a scenario where Sony's "old school" strategy could win out against Microsoft's forward thinking approaches. Of course, no one foresaw Don Mattrick and the Xbone.

Anyway, I remember that once the consoles were announced and the pre-launch fiesta was on, it was an unending avalanche of shit - anti-Microsoft posts, threads, articles, videos, interviews, think-pieces and editorials. And I do mean un-ending. From the day the Xbone was revealed, you could hit F5 around here and elsewhere and there was always some new article, thread, or post raking Microsoft across the coals. Sure, they earned them, because the Xbone and their strategy was pure garbage - but, boy - it. Did. Not. Stop. Post-launch, it barely got better - every thread, every game announcement, every conference, every damn time someone wrote the word "Xbox", things went badly. "Remember the DRM?" It really wasn't until the Xbox One S did the tide start to turn, and Microsoft only really started actually making ground once the Xbox One X launched. In contrast, Sony were hailed as the saviours of the medium from the day the Xbone was revealed until the very end of the generation, such was the strength of their good will, their games, and their PR team. I don't remember a circus of "Sony's dead" that came close to the Xbone fiasco; in fact, I've never seen anything close to the Xbone's cyclone of shit.

Flash forward until today, and the people responsible for Sony's good will and PR are gone. There's no Jack Tretton making a mockery of Xbox for the world to see. No Andrew House straight-shooting the business side to the audience. There's no Shu Yoshida dropping a Banderas for fan applause, or even a Shawn Layden wearing a Medievil T-Shirt. There's just Jim Ryan in business shirts and the news articles where Sony closes online stores, closes studios, and hikes game prices. Are fan boys running wild the non-sense, enamored by Sony's quiet approach to business? Sure, I think that's pretty much self-evident at this point; fan-boys gonna fan-boy.

But, is there an international multi-media conspiracy conducted by "Sony's enemies" to destroy PlayStation... apparently by shit posting on NeoGAF, making click-bait YouTube videos, and have the audacity to talk about Gamepass? I'm not seeing it, myself.

There is narrative trying to be created that they are anti-consumer and arrogant again.

Charging $125 for games in Australia makes it reality not a narrative.

My PS5 will gather dust until the prices decrease, plenty of other quality games to play on other platforms, or cheap PS4 games even (playing Ghost of Tsushima at the moment)

i agree with a few of your posts OP, but in my personal opinion I am absolutely DISGUSTED with Sony's handling of it's legacy and the support thereof...

Starting with Playstation Allstars this was Sony's chance to make this game a nostalgic landmark...The competition was on their 4th version and each game was filled with tons of game music, facts, collectables, hidden characters etc etc All Sony had to do was show an inkling of support for its legacy, they hired a pro fighter to help design, they had the awesome mix level design, and costumes (something SSB has flirted with at best)

Think of what PSAS could have had (not talking about the crappy 3rd party fighters BTW, that was beyond Sony's control) if they TRIED
History of PS
Commercials (Japanese and English)
Collectable in-game figurines
Hidden PS Easter Eggs
Extra Costumes like OG graphics
BGMs

Instead it was as BARE BONES AS COULD BE... The irony is that the pack in Astro-bot game on the V has pretty much all of this, a giant love letter to 20 + years of gaming...about freaking time

Then there was the PS Classic, a sad number of games that few would call classic, no options, no filters, barely any extra functions, and on top of all that a huge chunk of the games are the inferior PAL versions. Sadly likely killing the chance for a genuine must have a PS2 classic as the OG bombed hard! (AS IT SHOULD) Only thing I can praise about the classic is that it's a breeze to hack

The support for their back catalog has been a joke, and now that they're going to kill the PS3 and Vita store off what do they do?

They close the only INTEGRATED store (web version) so you have no choice but to use the far more convoluted Vita/3 versions of the OS which are clunky and crash very often! I get WHY they're closing them, but KNOWING gamers are going to hit the stores to try and get games they missed is a shit time to cut off one of those extensions. Oh and as I've previously mentioned they cut the rug under the devs still developing Vita games as well, screwing them out of MANY hard hours of work.

So while I agree that the doom and gloom is foolish, a great deal of the ire is well deserved!

Having all that money definitely isn't a guarantee, but it makes things much easier. It allows them to take more risks, and it allows them to play the long game. How did Valve steal the pc market? How did Netflix corner the streaming market? In Valves case, they largely got it right the first time when MS didn't. Netflix on the other hand stalked the market with mail in rentals until streaming became a technical reality, and were first to pounce. Had they done so any earlier, they'd have done so prematurely. Any later, and they could've been beaten by the likes of Crackle.

If a scenario plays out to where things got real bad for Sony like you say. Yes, in the past they had the ability to bleed cash if need be. These days though, Sony can try and spend their way out of a bad situation, but the landscape is so large that all Sony can really do is go where the tides carry them so to speak.

Sony can mimic or counter any move MS makes if they feel the need to do so. But only up to a certain point.

So we’ve all been watching Sony getting bad rep recently for some of their decisions etc. There is narrative trying to be created that they are anti-consumer and arrogant again. But it’s all a trap, don’t be naive people. It’s a trap to keep Sony investing in areas that are useless right now.

1. Why are they abandoning old gens? Because I’m sure they have exact data that tells them nobody is playing this stuff. We’ve seen this many times when company decides to pull the plug on something nobody plays anymore but because of sentimental value loud group of forum dwellers try to create a fuss. Ridiculous. Just do it and save the money.

2. What is Sony’s answer to Gamepass? There doesn’t need to be one. Their game development is costly, yes but they also sell a lot and are providing record profits for gaming division. Something is clearly working. PS Plus and Now are just enough.

3. Getting rid of Japan Studio. Japan is lost cause, they moved on from home console gaming for one reason or another. It’s all handheld and it’s all Nintendo. This isn’t Sony’s fault. Don’t tell me they created such a Japanese-centric games before because they didn’t, they only had third-party monopoly back at the time. It doesn’t get more Japanese than Ghost of Tsushima and it still didn’t sell as much as it should there (as your typical Monster Hunter or Dragon Quest) considering it’s their fucking history.

4. Jimbo refused Kojima. Yes, because his game they invested so much in was a commercial (and to an extent critical) flop. If we can draw one conclusion from Sony’s MO is that they don’t tolerate failure. They gave him everything he wanted including help from other major studio, something he didn’t have at Konami during his last project there and he produced them that!? Let Microsoft fund his craziness from now on, good riddance.

5. Sony only creates narrative-focused action-adventures that all look and play samey. Well, that’s objectively not true because they funded many experimental projects but key is that they found their niche and are excelling at it. It’s become their brand and what community expects from them. It works. People that don’t wish Sony good are trying to tell them to do something else, create new IP, experiment with indie ideas etc. Meaning, burn your hard-earned money just to feel good all the way to bankruptcy. Why don’t you tell Nintendo to finally move on from Zelda and Mario after 30 fucking years or Microsoft with their worn out Halo franchise. Na-ah, I’m seeing right through your ill intentions.

6. 70$. This is only egregious in Europe where it’s 80€ but because of the weak dollar right now it’s nothing in US. Your recent standard hike perfectly justifies this price hike. But key here is that Sony’s games drop their price relatively quickly and there are tons of sales and deals throughout the year, it’s really not an issue unless you’re Day 1 zealot. Nintendo, meanwhile, doesn’t know what discount is, sells their old games at full price and people still buy their shit in droves.

Conclusion. Jim Ryan led SCEE very successfully for years and that’s why he got this job. Even if some decisions are not immediately popular with tiny but loud internet crew, I’m sure they’re best for the company. Until it shows in financial results I have no reason to doubt them. Dark days of early-mid PS3 lifecycle will never come back again.

At this point Sony's worst enemies are concern trolls shitting up internet forums and dogshit "journalist" articles yelling kneejerk doom and gloom based on their 8 seconds of research and their lifelong experience as a gamer, which obviously automatically makes you an expert on running a billion dollar company.

Hilarious. You’ve listed a big long pile of legitimate complaints, but have done some tremendous mental gymnastics to explain them all away. And your argument is that other people are part of a campaign, or are shilling? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Also, care to explain why only EU pricing at €80 is out of order, but £70 is completely fine? Even though £70 is €80.65/$96.52 at the current exchange rate?

You’ve got your head up Sony’s arse mate. We pay £50 a year for online services, I’m sure Sony can afford the nominal cost of keeping the PSN stores open. No one is saying stop doing AAA games, they are saying they still want a stream of AA games also, like Journey and Puppeteer, which Sony was able to deliver during the PS3 era.

I swear we have some Sony stock holders on GAF as they only seem to care about Sony’s bottom line and are happy to accept and explain away any anti-consumer policy from them, in order to justify the financial benefit for the company. Pathetic.

Sony fans, like no others are genuinely like a cult imo.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many defence threads “they are out to get us” threads in my entire life. Sony had an untouchable generation with the ps4 and I think it may have affected some people.

ps5 is great, it’s going to be fine but guess what..it has some problems and so does Sony as a business. All businesses do. The competition is just all around closer this Gen

Excellent recollection. Let me expand on it.

Seeing as both last gen as well as this gen both started in November, we can draw even more interesting parallels.

At this point last gen, despite both having good sales early on, and the XB1 having a better launch lineup of exclusives. By this time Gaf was 50% memes of kids running past Mattrick's sad face and XB1's to rush and grab the PS4's sitting right beside them. The other 50% consisted of praising the PS4s GDDR6, along with sticking a fork in the XB1 post Titanfall.

Strangely, it was at around this time in 2014 that it became apparent that the Mattrick was leading Xbox down the wrong path, and people began calling for a change. Much like now there were people who argued on both sides, but it didn't take long to realize that it was probably best for Mattrick to go. Which ultimately led up to Mattrick leaving in late June. I can't help but see the parallels with Ryan and exactly the same point in time, only one gen later.

Ultimately Playstation fans will realize that demanding their preferred platform do better for them will benefit them in the long run. There's an aspect that I haven't seen mentioned that might be of significance in this circumstance. I just haven't brought it up because it's hard to get an honest reply and I don't want to throw speculation after all the speculating that's already taken place recently. But ask, and you shall receive.

What is you people's obession with not owning games. Sorry but I don't like games as a service or rentals. I like to own my games, or at least like psplus have them not go away. I can play any game i got on plus from 10 years ago, today. Game pass is overhyped on here and it's getting tiring hearing the zealots.
Who is "you people?"

I dont think anyone expects SX gap to be as big as ps4 ones. But still good enough to at least get a 30% win in cases like resolution or fps, or showing better graphics at same fps.

Those qouted accelarators that MS waited and built into SX will help, yes they have names to it, not fully PR, but something for identification of new features to excite us.

As for the github leak, so far it was proven to be real beta ps5 hardware, and it did lacked hardware RT. That was the questions posed before mark came out again to confirm hardware RT.

Posters aren’t enemies. The almost instant attitude shift that has occurred in the literal last two weeks isn’t an organic or natural one. I was here one day and the threads were all fairly standard and more about games with some light console warring, the next it was all Sony is doomed. It wasn’t gradual and it didn’t coincide with any particular piece of news. Look at the comical amounts of baseless, too good to be true rumors being posted near daily giving us all reason to be super excited for Xbox. Funny coincidence that they have no big games aside from halo to sell their console. “But buy an Xbox, you might get Mario, wink” “oh what’s that? I hear Xbox may have another major unannounced game this year.”

Anyone that doesn’t at least try to understand the scope of astroturfing and the general control a 2 trillion dollar company can take of any website or forum they decide to is ignorant on purpose. Especially in the context of a company that has been caught doing it again and again.

I was a PS4 gamer last gen but switched to XSX this gen cus of gamepass. When I said that on this forum last November Sony fans were telling me I was a fake account and that all this talk of people switching isn't 'organic'.

Still seems like people are using that same argument.
