I've always wondered why these types of cables aren't insulated? Is it a cost issue? Or perhaps too much weight?

It’s because the air around it acts as the insulation. They usually run in groups of three conductors in a 3 phase system and as long as the conductors are spaced far enough apart they won’t short out because of the air gap. While also reducing weight and cost.

Ah thanks! No idea if this is all factual as I'm a dummy but it sounds legit hah.
