There's another thread, but it's six pages already and I wanted to start a purely news driven thread so we can discuss the specifics instead of speculation.

Where?: Amsterdam

When?: October 4, 2005

What?: The last big show before the launch of the 360. Everything will be revealed for the Xbox 360 here. Launch window games will be confirmed. The last big surprises to lure in undecided folk (and there will be some). We're going to see games running on final 360 kits, hopefully no bullshots here. New levels confirmed to be shown of Gears of War. Perfect Dark Zero's blowout - no more secrets for that game. It's either going to look great, or it's not. And then there's the unknowns. Will Bungie show a teaser of Halo 3 (Answer: NO!)? Will Crackdown be shown in video form? Will Project Gotham Racing 3 still look so damn good? IGN says Too Human might make an appearance.

What about BioWare, one of the last big Xbox developers who hasn't yet shown shit? They got something to reveal:

oct2005_onwww_85x122.jpg

IGN said:
"What will you see? On Tuesday, October 4, Microsoft will deliver a keynote speech packed with several announcements. First, we should expect to hear about BioWare's first 360 game, concrete and detailed news on Silicon Knights Too Human, and the first details on Crackdown Real Time Worlds' GTA-inspired action-adventure game. We'll be in Amsterdam covering the event -- and playing all these Xbox 360 games. Oh, and don't even think you'll see anything on Halo 3 yet. It's a little too early for that.

Microsoft will have all its first-party titles, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power, and Project Gotham Racing 3, in playable form. Most of the third-party companies - Tecmo, EA, Activision, THQ, Namco, 2K Games, Ubisoft, and Sega - will be there with playable builds. None of it is embargoed, so you will receive hands-on impressions, screenshots, and movies of all these games - all at once on Tuesday and Wednesday. As of this writing - at Gate 45 in the San Francisco airport, Saturday, October 1 -- Microsoft has yet to announce its launch titles; but we expect this announcement to be made at X05."

So that's that. Those who are skeptical about the thing, this show should tell you all you need to know. Those who already are sold, this should confirm everything and more. Those who don't give a shit should have plenty to laugh/troll at (rolleyes).

● Midway announces XBX360 support at X05

Amsterdam, October 5, 2005 – Midway Games Inc. (NYSE: MWY), a leading interactive entertainment publisher and developer, affirmed its support for the Xbox 360 ™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft at the X05 brand experience, being held October 4th and 5th in Amsterdam. The event showcases the commencement of the next generation of console gaming pioneered by Microsoft and Xbox 360.

“We are very enthusiastic to extend our support for Microsoft from the current generation of Xbox to the dawning of a new era in interactive entertainment, beginning with Xbox 360,” commented Midway’s president and chief executive officer, David F. Zucker. “We have resources at all of our internal development studios currently working on Xbox 360 games, and we believe that the system is core to our success in the upcoming console cycle.”

Martin Spiess, Midway Games Limited’s Managing Director – Europe, said, “The backdrop of X05 is ideal to debut Xbox 360 in Europe. Amsterdam is the perfect blend of the rich historical legacy of Europe coupled with an innovative, forward-thinking attitude, much like the next generation of interactive entertainment will combine elements of classic gaming with as-yet-unseen gameplay and convergence of multiple forms of entertainment.”

Midway’s first title for Xbox 360, expected to launch in 2006, is Stranglehold, an intense action game developed in collaboration with world renowned action film director, John Woo’s (Face/Off, Hard Boiled, The Killer) Tiger Hill Entertainment. Stranglehold will bring John Woo’s famous use of hyperkinetic, choreographed action and slow motion sequences to the video game arena and will also feature the likeness and voice talent of international action film star, Chow Yun-Fat (Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hard Boiled).

"Perfect Dark Zero looks good and is certainly much improved over the sporadic leaks we've seen and those early, rather bleak, screenshots. But even the build we played didn't convince us that Perfect Dark is entirely ready. It looks like Rare will work until the last possible day to put all the finishing touches on it, and in the meantime, we can say it was fun while it lasted. I'm not ready to say it's the killer-app we were hoping it would be. Hopefully, we'll be able to play a near-final or final build in the next month, at which time I hope to have better, cheerier news."

● The Outfit (360) Game Info!

The Outfit sets itself apart in three major ways from other action/shooter games on Xbox 360:

# Destruction on Demand - As players progress through the game and complete mission objectives, they'll earn field units (FUs) that can be used on the fly to call-in "Destruction on Demand" - weaponry air-dropped into the action at any time. Everything is available from tanks, jeeps, half-tracks and other combat vehicles to machinegun nests, anti-tank emplacements, squad reinforcements, air strikes and artillery strikes on enemy targets.

# Freedom of Total Destruction - Featuring interactive and fully destructible environments, The Outfit gives gamers the freedom to shoot, blow up or demolish anything in the world. Destroy buildings, bridges, walls and fences - everything in the world can be leveled in the player's battle against the Nazi forces.

# Choose Between Three Playable Squad Leaders - Each possesses specific skills and abilities (i.e. Close-combat specialist, Heavy-arms specialist or Anti-tank specialist.) Players will lead a squad of battle-forged soldiers on a variety of combat missions - ranging from reconnaissance and rescue to search and destroy. With automated squad AI, players' squad will act like a highly trained infantry unit that responds to actions as well as dynamic battlefield situations - laying down suppressing or covering fire, taking cover or rushing enemy positions.

● Peter Jackson Executive Producing the Halo Movie/WETA Providing Effects!

A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to partner with two tremendous Producers from Universal, Mary Parent and Scott Stuber. In the short time they’ve been on board, Mary and Scott have joined with Peter Schlessel to accomplish unimaginably wonderful things. Example? They’ve secured an Executive Producer to help guarantee the creative integrity and technical excellence of the Halo film.

And that Executive Producer’s name is Peter Jackson.

I’ll give you a second to process. If you’re having a strong, emotional reaction, don’t panic. When I heard the news it took me the better part of a day just to stop smiling.

Yes. The Peter Jackson, Executive Producing the Halo film.

Needless to say I and the rest of Bungie are positively incontinent (Marty especially). But what really knocks us on our asses is we’re also getting the combined talent of the mighty men and women of WETA in the bargain. From fabricating Covenant weapons to building life-sized Forerunner structures to accomplishing shot after shot of complex live-action/CG integration -- simply put, there’s no group of people we’d rather have realize the Halo universe on screen.

Indeed, I don’t think there’s another group that even could.

There is hope for this movie yet!

● X05: Xbox, Adidas Announce Global Marketing Alliance - FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup exclusive to 360.

Also announced at X05 in Amsterdam today, Microsoft's Xbox division and sports company Adidas have announced a long-term strategic alliance, in concert with promotions related to the Electronic Arts-publisher, Xbox 360 exclusive FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup.

This alliance between Microsoft and Adidas encompasses a plethora of cross-promotional activities. The companies have announced Xbox 360 kiosks will be placed in Adidas retail locations across the U.S., Europe, Japan, Canada, Asia, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand for a variety of activities leading up to the FIFA 2006 World Cup.

Xbox will join Adidas in supporting the MTV series "MTV Goal - Germany 2006," which follows the progress of 10 of the globe's most promising young football talents as they bid to make it into their national squads in time for 2006. The show will be screened beginning mid-November 2005. In addition, Adidas will install content on Xbox 360 consoles, while Xbox will enjoy presence on Adidas' planned FIFA 2006 World Cup mobile portal. Finally, Xbox will have kiosks at all Adidas grassroots football events in the lead up to the FIFA 2006 World Cup.

"Xbox 360 is a place where all three of these elements come together to truly amplify the sport experience. We look forward to working with adidas on this exciting program."

They'd better be. Already the initial bad to mediocre buzz on a number of games has been either reversed or at least substantially improved (PD0, Kameo, Madden, NBA 2K6, DOA4, etc.) but a series of genuinely jolting revalations to further the cause would dispell the bad taste of E3 once and for all.

Any chance they'll talk up launch ship quanties?

Excellent thread as always Amir. Now, a motion to get this stickied.

I am sure that Microsoft knows that their showing at the past two shows was less than spectacular so they really need to start pulling out the big guns for X05. I'm sure this will be a most interesting show. MS can't afford to dissapoint.

After listening to the kameo soundtrack completely I really hope MS puts everything they got into pushing this game. Would hate to see it fail.

This is Microsoft's chance to hog the spotlight for themselves, and I'm hoping they impress. I've got a 360 on order, but I could still cancel if I don't see some compelling stuff here. I expect that after the next few days, I'll feel quite happy keeping my order.

I do hope MS has a few suprises up their sleeve for the next few days. It would be great to have something that's been hidden until now to spring on all of us. But, I'll settle for some solid impressions of the playable games, final hardware, etc.

Oh, and sticky this pronto! :D

I hope MS is able to inspire some confidence this time 'round. If we hear details on backward compatibility, get a final launch *day* lineup (screw "window," we know about most of that already), and get direct footage of near-final playable games, I will be happy. And the launch day lineup better be good, damnit (and better include PDZ).
