The Switch 2nd Birthday Thread ( Featuring a look forward into 2019 and beyond )

It is rather surprising to realize that, two years ago already, Nintendo has launched what was set to become his juggernaut console who’s momentum is still going strong month after month, I of course, am talking about the Switch. Time sure flys by so fast, and over its two years of existence, the Switch has proven to be a massive success thanks to its primary selling point : being able to instantly switch between your different playstyles from playing at home to bringing your system on the go, letting you play a huge library full of varied and wonderful games wherever you go, whenever you want to, and with whoever you want to play with.

Since the very first day the Switch has been revealed to the world, I have been nothing but an instant fan who believed in the core idea of the Switch. As a big Nintendo fanboy ( I have no shame to assume it ), I felt the Switch could deliver a game-changing gimmick that would change the way we usually play videogames. The concept of having a system that adapts to you instead of the player having to adapt to the system is a rather engaging and intelligent idea, and no surprise here, the Switch downright nailed it, hence its success.

Months prior to its release though, there has been a lot of skepticism regarding the potential value of what was considered back then for many investors and some hardcore gamers, an “ odd “ idea. The lack of power, the rather lackluster launch line-up, the selling price, the not hardcore enough concept. A lot of people have estimated that, like the Wii U, the Switch would never have a chance in hell to be a commercial success ( And if you’ve been through that old NeoGAF thread first posted in January 2017... oh boy, the amount of people that got it horribly wrong :messenger_tears_of_joy: ) and that such an idea could just never pull off.

Big, big mistake. Because at launch, haters and skepticals have neglected on one launch game that pulled off the Switch on the road to monumental success : The Legend of Zelda : Breath of The Wild.

I am really happy and proud to have been part of this amazing journey since launch day, I remember spending my time on the new Zelda game, a fantastic experience in the end, as it is one of the very few games that offers this huge scale of liberty where you could just do whatever you want. You didn’t have to beat Calamity Ganon at the end, heck the game even lets you able to beat him at the start of the game if you want to ! Of course, you wouldn’t come prepared and you’d of course would gladly learn a few things or two before mastering the situation at your own ease.

But here’s the thing, beating the final boss at the start would be more cumbersome as he wouldn’t have half of his life bar already drained ( If you rather went on to defeat all the four Guardians before that, you know what I’m talking about ), making it more challenging to try defeating him with just a random stick and a wooden shield found in the nature.

But here’s why it’s so good, and how it mostly gets open-world games right, it’s entirely up to you however you want to experience the journey. There is no invisible walls or scripted rules that forces you to follow a specific route, in the end you are free to succeed any of the Shrine challenges in the order you like. You just wander around, eventually put on “ The Wanderer “ as the background music, and witness the world you live in.

And yeah, that’s just one game among plenty others I’ve brought in and had a blast with over the past two years spent with this ace system. Nowadays, I love spending time playing a home console on portable mode, that’s where I come to realize that hybrid systems is a type of console which I would definitely want to see more often in the gaming industry. Imagine a portable PlayStation home console, or an Xbox hybrid system ? The possibilities... are ENDLESS.

And you thought we were going to stop on such positive notes ? Well think again ! Because 2019 already seems to be a pretty big year, much bigger than 2018, and if you don’t know what I’m talking just take a look at what awaits us this year alone ( Metroid Prime 4 and possibly Bayonetta 3 doesn’t count though ) :

Like seriously, do you get the deal here ? 2019 is looking so damn good with titles such as Astral Chain, Daemon X Machina, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, etc etc... and keep in mind that it’s still March. Which means that we should also expect even more unannounced games to pop up throughout the year, making this year a jam-packed ride through truly promising games and highly anticipated titles. With ( hopefully ) Nintendo Directs and E3 around the corner ( as I’m writing this, we are now 100 days ahead of E3 ), the Switch line-up is excitingly increasing in, and as you thought it already looks too good to be true compared to last year... 2019 could also, if everything turns out to work good, mark the unexpected ( although now expected ) arrival of Xbox games throughout Xbox Game Pass on Switch... Sure it’s still just a rumor by now, but since Microsoft and Nintendo has been acting like great buddies recently, it would make total sense for them to continue on their path and eventually hatch up on some great plans together.

Here’s to another hype year with the Switch, which I hope that we will, me and you GAF, be eagerly looking forward to. In the meantime, let’s take the time to celebrate a well deserved happy birthday for the Switch, truly Nintendo’s biggest return into shape since the Wii.

This year is definitely gonna be fun. So many great games coming. I'm most excited for Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario. Might pick up Fire Emblem, Luigi, and SMT5 if it comes out this year.

I love my Switch and for me it's by far the most exciting console. Things are only getting better for it while I feel the PS4/XB1 are slowing down and getting ready for next gen.

I’m loving the Switch so much. At this point I have more games than I can even play. Eventually I will have to beat them but they keep releasing new ones! That 2019 lineup is looking mighty fine.

First new console I purchased since the SNES. Glad to be back

Glad you seem to be enjoying your purchase. If you decided to buy this system decades after your last Nintendo purchase, it must have been for a good reason :messenger_winking:

I have so many games for my Switch but I just can't get enough of Zelda. I've bought Mario Odyssey, NSMBUD, Pokemon, Smash etc but I keep going back to Zelda. I don't think i'll be done with it any time soon. The PS4/XB1 hasn't even come close to the Switch for me.

I’ve got Zelda, Bayo 3, Yoshi, Mario Maker 2 preordered. I’m in debate about fire emblem and pokemon. Metroid clearly isn’t coming this year.

I have different experience with switch.

Got it 6 months after launch

Zelda
Xeboblade 2
Mario+rabbids

Kind of all the games i have liked so far.

Others I have on wiiu or didnt like, so really bad first 2 years and 3rd wont look much better in my eyes.

Zelda remake has so lame childish graphics so no thanks.

But good that others can enjoy it while mine just collects dust

Well maybe you should have done some research before you getting the system. If you don't like "childish" visual style in games then maybe Switch wasn't best choice for you.

I haven´t had the best of relationships with Nintendo over the years, to put it mildly. I´ve never really liked their hardware or some of the crazy ideas they´ve done in the past, and couple that with their abysmal third party support in the last two decades or so it has made me to lean more over to Sony and Playstation. But Switch just clicked instantly, making it one of my favourite consoles almost immediately. The hybrid concept fits my lifestyle like a glove since I travel a lot and Nintendo seems to be firing on all cylinders when it comes to games.

Considering I skipped a couple of generations, I´m now bathing in great exclusives. Since I got the Switch, I have played nothing but bangers, and it just doesn´t seem to stop. Looking past the obvious shovelware crap that noone cares about, the Switch library is filled to the brim with quality titles, and the third party support is the best in years for Ninty. Love their relationship with Platinum too, it seems that those two companies bring the best out of each other, so keep the masterpieces coming.

I would say I play 60/40 docked/ handheld and both alternatives are a joy to behold. The thing with Switch that is so good, is the various options on how you play. Docked in front of the tv, handheld in bed or when you travel, tabletop at work. Another feature I like is the small stature and instant boot up. The console takes up zero space and I´m one click away from starting up a game. The PS4 on the other hand is bulky, takes forever to boot up and is just overall very clumsy. The Switch packs some serious punch for being so small, I´m incredibly impressed with some games being able to play handheld almost flawlessly.

Only downside so far is the expensive prices on certain games and peripherals and the lack of physical editions for a big chunk of the library. Digital seems to be the way with Switch, but I love my physical copies.

2019 seems to be the best year yet. Very excited about Astral Chains, Links Awakening, Daemon X Machina, Dragon´s Dogma, Silksong, Bayo 3, Marked for Death, Cross Code, Dragon Quest and all the other games that arrives this year (hopefully).

I do not regret purchasing a Switch at all, I have gotten more value out of it than I ever thought I would and I haven´t owned mine for more than six months. I hope the Switch can continue its success and make more publishers and devs jump aboard, and I congratulate Nintendo for making an absolute beast of a console, a feat I thought were impossible for the company to achieve just a couple of years ago.

It has now been officially two years, day after day, since the Switch launched on this day of 3rd March 2017. Happy 2nd birthday and here’s to another great year of games to come ! :messenger_clapping: :messenger_beermugs:

The year looks great, but everything I'm interested in is in the second half.

Yeah, it’ll definitely get better starting from summer, I mean Daemon X Machina and MUA3 coming in July ( I hope ), the patience is killing me :messenger_confused:

Do you enjoy the Switch so far ?

The Switch is great, just 2018 was very disappointing to me. There was nothing I was particularly interested in. 2017 was so amazing, I was fooled into thinking every year would be similar.
Same for me. I spent most of my Switch gaming in 2018 on two titles: XC2 and MHGU. Totally worth it though.

It’s a nice system. I still use it mostly for Skyrim but I’ve also been playing the Neo Geo Collection on it (which is great btw), I’m also about to give Death Mark a go.

i remember when people said the switch was going to fail.... that was fun.

anyway.

i love my switch, can't get enough of it, i actually have more switch games than i do xbox one and ps4 games and i've had those much longer haha

keep the games rolling i say... but nintendo really needs to have a mod on the nintendo E-shop... with the close to porn games available... i mean it may be acceptable in japan, but when a kid is browsing through the games... i think you need a moderator...

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I love my Switch - I usually bring it with me to work every day and play for about an hour on my lunch break. The system has some amazing RPGs (Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Ys VIII, Tales of Vesperia, Octopath Traveler, Final Fantasy, etc) and that's my favorite genre of games. Being able to play these games whenever and where ever I want is definitely a huge plus.

I like that the Switch also still supports game cartridges. Having physical copies of these games warms my heart.

After a year gathering dust it seems like my Switch is finally going to get some use which is nice:
Demon X Machina (provided they fix the awful framerate)
Astral Chain
Zelda
All look great.

And there's also Pokemon and Fire Emblem which I'm still not sold on but they show potential.

Ahh, the Switch. I still remember the day I bought it. I personally wen't to a nearby electronics store to buy it, and walked away with the console, and Zelda in tow. I also bought Super Bomberman R to play together with my girlfriend. I was lefet alone to build it up, as my girlfriend was resting before night shift. Thankfully, the machine was easy to put together, and soon I was playing Zelda. That is some feeling I have not felt since first time playing Ocarina of Time. Two years later, I still play with my Switch almost daily.

My best decision was to start keeping it with me when I go to work. That way, I can keep playing games during my breaks, and it's easier to work on that ever growing backlog. 2018 was certainly slower than 2017, but this year once again brings out many interesting games I can't wait to play. Here's for twp years, and many more to come!

well i spent most of my teens/20s doing music and being in rock n roll bands and going to parties and bars and all that. i was really broke for most of it. now that im in my 30s and have a job and am more of a homebody (and all my old friends are married/have kids/etc) i can afford it, so i dove back in. i have a friend that gets all the new systems so for a while i was very impressed with the Wii U first party titles. when BOTW dropped i really really wanted it, then when Super Mario Odyssey dropped, i decided i had waited long enough.

Great post, OP. I’m also an unashamed Nintendo fanboy, and the switch is slowly cementing itself as my favourite console of all time. Never gamed more than I have over the past two years, never had as much fun. Long may it continue for the next two years.

I've never been happier with a console purchase than the Switch. If I go anywhere it's usually packed with my stuff. I use on breaks and lunch at work. Two years in and It already has some of my favorite games like BotW, Xenoblade Chronicles 2/Torna and Mario Odyssey. Astral Chain looks amazing, Bayo 3 will surely be fantastic, etc...

All I really want now is another Pikmin, and for people to not judge me for the amount of hours I'll be pouring into Animal Crossing.

It’s been a great 2 years. I haven’t loved a system like this since the GBA or Dreamcast. It’s kind of scary how many great games are coming out this year too.

It's only been 2 years? I just rebooted games to get an idea of my playtime (stupid 20 game limit...)... I've definitely gotten 3 years worth out of it so far.

Happy birthday baby. Switch means life.

I've owned it since day one. I've purchased the following 33 games:

ARMS
Bayonetta 2
Candle
Cave Story+
Crystal Crisis
Dead Cells
Disgaea 5
Flinthook
Funghi Explosion
LoZ Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Minecraft: Switch Edition
Monster Boy & The Cursed Kingdom
NAMCO Arcade Pac
Octopath Traveller
Overcooked
Overcooked 2
Owlboy
Pokken Tournament
Pixeljunk Monsters 2
PSiKYO Vol. 1 Collection
PSiKYO Vol. 2 Collection
Puyo Puyo Tetris
Runner3
RXN: Raijin
Shikhondo
Sonic Mania Plus
Super Bomberman R
Super Mario Odyssey
Sushi Striker
Snake Pass
Slime-San
Valkyria Chronicles 4

Great system so far. Battery life bums me out, and I wish the Joycons locked more decisively to the tablet. Tons of excellent games on my to-buy list like Xeno 2, Hyrule Warriors, FE Warriors, Civ 6, Diablo 3, and Smash Bros. The game library took off like a rocket and it's only uphill from here.

I couldn't care any less for the online, I suppose.

The Switch has been fantastic so far. 2017 in particular was one of Nintendo's best years ever!

This year looks especially memorable for its RPGs. Not only are we getting a bunch of titles that are long overdue on Nintendo systems (FF7, FF9, FFX, FFX-2, FFXII, Tales of Vesperia), we're getting new console Fire Emblem and Pokemon quests, Dragon Quest Builders 2, that Grandia collection (I think?), and something I'm particularly excited for, Dragon Quest XI S.

Also excited for Mario Maker 2 and Link's Awakening, and this is all before we know what E3 will showcase!

This makes sense... saw my 'Switchmas' pics in my memories on social media today. Two years ago today, I was at the midnight launch after 'squirelling away' money for months in advance, paying off everything piece by piece for an epic gaming night that ended at about 6am and about $1200 CAD later.

The Switch has been an amazing console, its a friend favourite when people come by to visit as most of my friends are casual gamers at best. Everything from Mario Kart, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Bomberman, Smash and most recently Tetris 99.

For me personally I've put a generous amount of time into Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (online) Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey.

I can't wait to get my hands on Super Mario Maker 2, Luigi's Mansion 3, Yoshi's Crafted World, Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest XI and Link's Awakening, I'm eagerly anticipating a new Mario Kart game at some point too,. As a launch owner this console has not disappointed as I've found some great indies too, Stardew Valley and Golf Story.

After everything I did two years ago to get everything seen below and everything thats come afterwards its been absolutely worth it! one of the best Nintendo consoles yet. Happy Birthday Switch!

How's RXN: Raijin? I was waiting on the price drop, then I kind of forgot about it.

Also, I had a thought: if you get Nintendo Online, technically you're not buying Tetris 99 - it wouls be a shame for you to miss out on the Game Of The Year discussion for your noble experiment.

I would also recommend tagging Devil Engine on your wishlist for a sale come 2020 - looks to be your kind of jam.

Inspired by @Dundunpachi and a recent OCD tickle, I offer my "Activity Log":

Splatoon 2 -640 hours
SSB Ultimate - 325 hours
BOTW - 145 hours
Octopath Traveler - 80 hours
Hollow Knight - 50 hours
Into The Breach - 50 hours
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 - 40 hours
Super Mario Odyssey - 35 hours
Mario + Rabbids - 35 hours
Dead Cells - 30 hours
ARMs - 30 hours
Mario Tennis Aces - 20 hours
Mario Kart 8 DX - 20 hours
Full Metal Furies - 15 hours
Graceful Explosion Machine - 15 hours
Valkyria Chronicles 4 - 15 hours
Tiny Metal - 15 hours
Battle Chef Brigade - 15 hours
Bayonetta - 15 hours (quad-dip)
Human Resource Machine - 15 hours
Lumines Remastered - 10 hours
The Messenger - 10 hrs (has to be glitched)
Overcooked! - 10 hours
Enter The Gungeon - 10 hours
Blade Strangers - 10 hours
Kirby Star Allies - 10 hrs
Tetris 99 - 10 hours
Monster Boy (currently playing) 10 hours

Then about a dozen 1-5 hour titles. Many duds or overly optimistic double-dips, but also firecracker gems like Blaster Master Zero, Bloodstained CotM, and Gorogoa.

My average gaming time has gone up to roughly 4 hours a day (according to Nintendo Parental Controls) working a 40hr/wk job, and almost 6 hours a day across both my girlfriend and my accounts.

PS4/3DS/Wii U was probably closer to 2-2.5 when I was employed.

It's fucking amazing to me, to be able to reconnect with my hobby in these last 2 years, and any conversations about power or #nogames4me or whatever nonsense doubters and haters muster, all I can do is smile and feel the ice cubes.

RXN Raijin is pretty solid. The pace is slower than most shmups, but maybe that's a good thing. Art style is definitely cool. There are other shmups on Switch that are more worthy of purchase before you pony up the cash for RXN Raijin but I'd say it's worthy of a buy.

I haven't gotten GEM or Devil Engine yet because they're digital-only so far. I see you only have a few hours into Enter the Gungeon, so you should probably fix that (and maybe keep an eye on the upcoming Android Assault Cactus Plus).

Tetris 99 looks sweet but I already have Puyo Puyo Tetris.

I logged tons of Gungeon on PS4 haha. I never understood the battery mechanic for AAC, but I might give it another go on Switch. Haven't had a good twin-stick in the hopper for a while. Iron Crypticle looks really fun too.

I am itching for a proper shooter - what's a good move, if not RXN? I do lean towards slower shmups over bullet hell - I am embarrassed how much I like the Sky Force games - but I'm open to all of it, and not shy about some Tate.

RXN fits that description of a slower shmup. There are a lot of older shmup collections like PSiKYO Vol.1 and Vol.2, Darius Cozmic Collection, and so forth. Shikhondo isn't bad. There are a lot more shmups available digitally like Black Bird, Twinkle Star Sprites, Blazing Star, Alpha Mission II, etc etc

I love my Switch but I don't use it as much as I would want to. 2018 was a real disappointment with lackluster Nintendo games that were spread very thin over the entire year. 2019 doesn't look that fantastic to me either. Yeah, there's a lot more output of games (if everything is indeed releasing this year, which I don't believe for a second) but the big titles just happen to not really appeal to me. That's just an unfortunate coincedence I guess, but overall I just don't like a lot of the choices Nintendo's been making lately. They had this fantastic foundation that I expected them to build upon and that just doesn't seem to be what Nintendo wants to do. In many ways the Switch is still kinda barebones. Even the online service that we have to pay for now is barebones. It's stuff like that that bums me out a bit.

Can't forget the gyroscope bro. Nintendo is doing yeoman's work actually pushing the use of gyroscope where the other two guys are holding us all down.
