The state of the industry in 2021 - Are games becoming progressively shittier over time or is that perception just a symptom of getting older?

99% of all games are dogshit now and you maybe get a decent one worth playing every 2 years. Nothing is original and every fucking 3rd person action game just copies uncharted, which was a bad game to begin with. Also people talk about mass effect 3's gameplay like it gave free blowjobs, but it was just gears of bore. Oh look an arena with chest high walls I wonder if there will be combat here...YUP. Also pokemon sword is the worst RPG of all time. 1998 gave us all time classics and new IPs in a single year, whereas every year after 2009 is filled with endless garbage trash that is boring and derivative. Fire emblem 3 houses was also extremely bad and worse than conquest. Hey nintendo please add more shovelware and half assed ports of ancient games for $60 to the eshop we don't have enough. My god fallen order was such boring shit. No thanks I don't want weird AA games that might have an interesting idea ill take the same assassin's creed as last year but more expensive please. If a game isn't boring and lacking in content like Anthem it is probably just straight up broken like cyberpunk. Fuck me, Blizzard remastered Warcraft 3 and made it worse. That really says everything about gaming. Blizzard took a classic and spent money to make it worse for a cynical cash grab. I don't know how you can only pick the 10 most disappointing games of the year when it is so easy to fill out a top 30 most disappointing.

Yes video games are bad now. Especially the switch with its shit-ass joycons.

Yes they are ... it’s not just nostalgia, it’s not just growing old.. it’s really simple actually. Games have hit that “ blockbuster movie” rut where it’s such big money invested now that everything is narrowed down to one simplistic formula that’s proven to extract the most money.

At a minimum micro transactions are predatory. It’s a very small number of people that spend the most.

LOL. Payday loans are predatory. Jacking up prices on necessities is predatory. You may not like mtx but calling them predatory is reeee levels of hyperbole.

I have been gaming since the late 80's, and I couldn't disagree more. We have more choice on more platforms at better prices than we have ever had. AAA publishers may not be making the games you want, but if you can't find anything enjoyable with literally 10s of thousands of games on PC, console, or mobile then I think your problem might not be with gaming.....

In some ways...large studios just can't take big risks anymore. Games are too expensive to make and games coverage and the gaming communtiy rates games either a 9 or 10/10 GOTG better than Schindler's List experience or 0/10 total shit game because XYZ Studio banged my mom and killed my dog. I do miss the B tier titles from the 360/PS3 days. So many gems from that time period that would never get made today.

Also, stop playing AAA console games exclusively. There are tons of excellent games on PC and I imagine a lot of fun titles on Switch.

Yup, games are getting worse especially AAA Western games, also gaming companies are making games with no risk at all, just the same game over and over. i miss when Sony used to publish all of these soulful diverse games.

You have a game with this bald dude glaring at me, a game with a picture of a foot, and some fucked up Japanese mr pibb knock off along with a dog giving me the milhouse eyes. What the fuck are you playing?

Nope.. game is as diverse as ever. Walking sim is the most hype game of this month for example. Give me cinematic gaming, indies and battle pass all day every day.

I honestly very rarely skim the AAA game space, because a lot of problems OP is describing seem almost exclusive to that sphere. I personally play a lot of indies (psst...that’s where a lot of the fun, talent, and creativity are now!).

That’s not to say AAAs don’t have their place in gaming, it just pays to pick them up later when they’re patched/updated a bunch, are actually complete, and usually sold with their DLC as well!

I mostly enjoy the GaaS multiplayer games and single player stuff I didn’t finish all last Gen on PS4 on my PS5 due to raising a toddler and haven’t touched my two PS5 launch titles.

It’s either AAA exclusives or I don’t bother and I’m kind of sad those are the options I just don’t have time to sink into indies and B-tier doesn’t really exist.

Dont stick to AAAs. Indies and small studios are doing amazing stuff, and it keeps getting better. If you game on PC you have access to so much good content it's actually insane. Things have never been as good and vibrant as now.

I think i'm quite lucky as i love open world games, looter games, etc, so there is a lot of modern gaming that i love.
Having said that, i always say, and believe it, that the golden age of gaming was the 16bit and 32bit gens. Just so much variety in game genres and game design, so much wracky and bizaare shit, just so much passion and variety.
Of course i was also a teenager at that time, but i still believe its true.

There is a serious lack of creativity and experimentation in the AAA space. A lot of safe iterative stuff and every game wants to be a huge blockbuster with more content than ever.

I’m enjoying games more than I have in almost 30 years because of the Nintendo Switch. I prefer shorter, less cinematic games. I’d rather watch movies than play a game that is trying to be like a movie. You just need to know what you like and look for it. It’s likely out there.

True, but even mario odyssey was recycled garbage for like half the moons. Ground pound in a random spot to get a moon. And they did that with a good number of moons. Forget difficult platforming, let's play scavenger hunt. And Zelda Breath of the Wild recycled a buttload of assets and enemy types. I like the game, but that was the thing that annoyed me the most.

I haven't played the more linear nintendo games though, like Zelda Link's Awakening, Donkey Kong, etc. though, so maybe those aren't quite as "bad" with recycled content.

I'm still enjoy gaming as much as I ever did and thankfully I was able to avoid almost all GaaS and MP games......so for most part I'm happy.

I do wish Sony wouldn't concentrate solely on western games and give us some first party Japanese games.

How do you feel about god of war, horizon zero dawn, the last of us, ghosts of tsushima, spiderman.... Versus nier automata, gravity rush, etc. Do you still enjoy the former? I think I'm starting to get burned out playing ps first party games, as I have beat spiderman remastered, miles morales, the last of us ii, and currently playing last guardian. All within the past month or two.

Games are getting worse. No one wants to innovate and take risks since the development budgets are much higher. The big companies are following a tried and tested method to make money off their big titles.

I wish I was into indie games because I'm sure those probably have the most passionate devs trying out different things.

I remember how the focus was on creating better games up until ps3/360 era, now the goals have definitely changed and it shows. I only truly enjoyed like 4-5 games the entire last gen.

Nein. Games are getting better and better with the pass of time, it's just you that's getting older and have lost the passion for gaming. You don't like to play anymore and are bored with this hobby.

Happens everytime to a lot of different people. Just find something else to do. Videogames are fine.

I enjoyed God of War and Tsushima but I didn't liked Zero Dawn at all and I just not in to Marvel so I didn't bother play Spider Man.

As much as I liked Tsushima, my biggest problem with that game is there is too much copy & paste busy work and traversal is so limiting especially compare to games like Monster Hunter Rise.

One thing that bothers me about modern Sony is how they solely focusing on their western first party games, I enjoy some of them but my big reason getting in playstation in the first place was for their Japanese games selection.

I’m in my late twenties and can categorically state that it’s the console industry that feels stale at present.

In my lifetime I’ve gone from the SNES, which had amazing games like LTTP, Super Mario Kart & Super Mario World.

Then the 3D explosion on the N64 and PS1.

Then the PS2 which had the first 3D GTA games & Sony’s first party. The Game Cube also smashed it for me with Double Dash, Twilight Princess, Melee and Wind Waker.

Then the 360 bringing in mainstream online gaming. PS3 introducing us to Uncharted and The Last of Us, which would go on to influence many of Sony’s Studios today.

The PS4/Xbox One gen, and by extension this one just feel like continuations of the PS3/360.

Microsoft used to get so much shit, and still do, for sequel-ing the shit out of everything, and deservedly so.

In my view though, Sony and Nintendo have trimmed down the number of original games they make too. We have people begging for Uncharted 5, The Last of Us 3, God of War 7, GT 7, Ratchet. I love all of these franchises, and have no issue with GoW, Ratchet or GT, but Uncharted and TLOU should definitely be ditched now for new IPs to freshen things up. Sony are best IMO when they make something great, and don’t milk it, and then have the confidence to move on and make something else once the story is told. Nintendo, I think Splatoon was the last major original IP they made that had legs, and before that? I don’t know.

I’d hoped the Switch would have been the next ‘revolutionary’ thing but Ninty have gimped it by removing every social feature; no chat, no messaging, no apps, no themes etc. It feels like a hollow system to me, as much as I want to love it.

You’re just getting too old OP, plus look at it like this. Nowadays gaming has become something mainstream, you have tons of news outlets dedicated to it, technical overviews, and what not. You didn’t have this stuff back then. The flaws(shitty games) are just more exposed now than they were back in the day.

Gaming has evolved, some areas for the better, some areas for the worse, but I refuse to say gaming in general has gotten worse when you have titles such as Witcher 3, RDR2, Xenoblade chronicles, Bloodborne, etc

Try switching platforms or take extended break if you think they are getting repetitive.

One of the reason fanboying doesn't work long term and is derogatory to your own enjoyment of games.

I took a very long break and am back now.

It's really not that strange, in GoT you also get grappling hook but you can only use it specific marked areas, meanwhile in Rise you can use your Wirebug to freely climb everywhere.

At 25 you probably missed the 8 and 16 bit generations when they started to create Genres of all types. Although shoot em ups/fighters became dominant on two distinctive consoles which may have annoyed some gamers back in the 90s as well.

If you grew up around Gears/COD/Overwatch then you'll notice that they all follow a familiar pattern and mostly stick to the same thing.

GTA is one of the biggest games out there but it kind of does the same things that 3, 4, VC and SA did.

I would say to try different games and genres as EA/Acti/Take Two tend to never change up the formula and do stuff to make you buy more inside the game once you bought them.

As much as some people don't like Japanese styled games, they tend to be more varied and don't try and stick to the same formula.

All those are valid points, but no. 1, 2, 4. 8, 9 and 11 are my main gripes.

I don't get the idiotic need of wrapping ideas around politics and putting them into places where they don't belong. It gives me a sour taste. Whats worse is that industry and gaming media people are encouraging it. I've either skipped some games or glued to the fence still wondering if I should because of it. Some American developers/industry people seem to think everything revolves around them. Not everyone needs to be constantly reminded of their current political climate ffs. These games will age terribly because the developers chose to make some needless reactionary political commentary or borderline propaganda that'll eventually become outdated.

Indie games have saved the gaming industry imo.

I'm rooting for the AA market to make a comeback. As it stands now, the market mostly consists of either indie or AAA with barely anything inbetween. Both have their issues. AA used to be a middle blend of both.

Gaming hasn't really been the same since its absence. The most prolific, and possibly only, "AA" publisher remaining is probably the revitalized modern rendition of THQ and applaud them for their efforts.

Yup, games are getting worse especially AAA Western games, also gaming companies are making games with no risk at all, just the same game over and over. i miss when Sony used to publish all of these soulful diverse games.

Man, cover art used to be so f'in great. There isn't nearly as much style to them now. Western cover art has really fallen off a cliff on that part in particular.

Stop playing AAA games, I'll keep posting this. Indie games, some Japanese games that aren't very expensive productions like From Software's are the way to escape this modern cancer of AAA development. The gaming industry would be much healthier and better if people didn't waste their money on the same fuckling dull game remade a million times by AAA developers. Open world games made by Western devs specifically are the most boring fucking genre in existence, and yes that includes the once great GTA.

AAA games surely got worse, much worse after connecting with the internet and exploiting it in the bad way, but AA and indie titles are better than ever.

I feel like games these days seem to be hella recycled, boring experiences - the same shit reskinned again and again for the same (if not higher) price tag. Perhaps its because im like 25 now and I've seen my fair share, so it's not as exciting anymore, but maybe its also just because the quality of them has decreased?

Developers also seem to be more afraid to go out on a limb and take risks, resulting in games that play it way too safe. One thing I noticed is that usually developers will try a few things, find something that works, and then milk the fuck out of it. But then they don't make better games - once they have their cash cow you'd think they'd be like "ok great we solved the money problem, now lets make some good shit" - but they dont even seem to in a lot of cases.

Maybe that's a shot at capitalism, but it's funny you know because when you start a business, your funds are low and you're trying to cultivate something amazing, and by the time you finally see success youve just become heinously greedy and creatively bankrupt. This isnt just a reality for the videogame industry either, it happens all over. The world in general is a more insane place than most people realize outside their sheltered reality.

Overall, I feel the following is the sad reality/issues with video games in 2021:
  1. Microtransactions are everywhere and they're being accepted by docile consumers (and/or ignorant younger people) who are not choosing with their wallet, further perpetuating the problem
  2. Certain developers appear to be hacking gamers for $$$ and getting away with it, while no one acknowledges what is happening before their eyes
  3. New games are often recycled hot garbage thats hyped to the moon and back (but never lives up to it's expectations)
  4. Video games dont even ship complete anymore, content is cut from the disc or original offering and then being offered later as DLC, or worse, it's being left on the disc and then unlocked after the initial purchase with yet another purchase
  5. Console gamers have to pay monthly to play online (when they already pay for internet - yes i know this isnt a new thing, but its always been bullshit)
  6. Video games are hitting prices far too high for the average consumer to realistically want to buy more than a couple a year
  7. Fewer games are developed each year, and the ones that are play it incredibly safe to ensure profits aren't low
  8. Games/writers are now injecting political and social agendas into video games
  9. Developers are pandering to anything that makes anyone uncomfortable and completely blunting any apparent edginess to appeal more to a larger audience (devs are legitimately afraid to be edgy in today's world as apposed to two or three generations ago)
  10. Every developer seems to want you to have and use their own marketplace and app launcher so they can make more $$$ and profile you harder, forcing consumers to install trash they dont want just to even play games
  11. Developers skimp on substance and instead make everything hella shiny/explosive in an attempt to overstimulate the player and 'wow' them (because explosions and shiny things are entertaining, right?) - a general over-focus on graphical fidelity and how it looks rather than how it plays
  12. Games ship broken with many bugs - developers release day 1 patches to supposedly fix the issues, but the patches dont even fix the issues in some cases (why not just fix the issues before launching the game, the fuck?) resulting in consumers getting a shitty experience that is in some cases unplayable (and effectively being scammed)
  13. And more that's not coming to mind right now
I recognize that some of these issues are due to the way business goes and economical pressures on both the consumer and business' side, but the overall state of things is concerning.

Does anyone feel like most games aren't living up to their hype and or expectations? At what point do you think the shift happened? IMO there seems to be many industry wide issues that aren't really being addressed, or companies aren't being held accountable. What could be done to resolve these issues?

Discuss.

Excuse any poor formatting/weird continuity issues, this is just a bunch of thoughts dumped onto a page.

If I constrained myself to the largest AAA games with the most marketing and hype, then I can agree with a fair your amount of your points. I think objectively, there are many recent examples where one or more of them will be true these are true (Avengers, Cyberpunk, AssCreeds, Anthem, Fallout 76 etc. all have some or more of those elements).

But as a whole a whole, I have great difficulties agreeing with your points. There is such an incredible multitude of games being made these days that for every amazing game made there now exists subgenres of games that innovate and iterate on the ideas.

For instance, Diablo spawned games like Path is Exile, Grim Dawn, Diablo 3, Minecraft Dungeons. All within the same genre but massively different in complexity, design, tone, game design and so on. If you liked Diablo II and want more, you have more competent games than ever before. And this is the case for pretty much any genre/game. You could make the same kind of example for Dark Souls, "3rd Person Cinematic Sony Games", Open World Sandboxes (1st and 3rd person), roguelikes, strategy games and so on.

The only restriction is that in many case you will find these games outside the AAA space. Incidentally, the worst cases of offensive monetization and poor launch states are also in the AAA space (and bottom of the barrel trash scam games).

I don't know what kind of games you like OP, but if you can't find something that excites you anywhere in the gaming space, I think your problem lies within yourself and your view of things. I do completely agree with you on that AAA games are more derivative than ever, and I would love to see those giant budgets be put to better use than marketing, shiny graphics, and BS monetization. But I cannot help but feel I have an almost infinite number of options when picking a game that'll be worth my time.

And you're only 25 man, come on. You haven't experienced shit (and neither have I). I hope you'll find what you're looking for ;)

Go play some old games. I strongly suspect you'll find that most of them aren't nearly as perfect as you remember them to be.
I learned this the hard way trying to apply logic to PS2 games that are “masterpieces” sorry to say but even though in some ways DMC 3 is better than 5, I’ll play 5 everyday of the week than the mess that is playing that on a PS2. Ironically enough, the games that age the Best are those 60 FPS platforms and story heavy RPGS like Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy. I thought that one Sony exec was full of shit when he said “why would people be interested in playing this.” And he wasn’t, many of those games feel like crap to play even with nostalgia attached to them. Hell, I went to play Kotor on the Xbox through X1 BC and I’d rather play the mobile version because it just feels better to play.

I see, the grappling hook is your thing here... coool but it doesn't change the fact that they are completely different propositions. What you are complaining about is the lack of fast movements in GoT ?

This thread appears on GAF at least once a year.

If you are solely focusing on new AAA games, I think you will be disappointed. Because AAA games have sort of all become homogenous. Either openworld games or shooters. They also are the ones ususally with patches and MTX issues.

However you should focus less on new games and more on older AAA games and indie games. Older AAA games wont have the patching issues and the MTX is mature enough for you to easily know what you want or dont want. Indie games (even new ones) are usually complete and in a way a more polished experience

The only thing you lose with this approach is being in the zeitgeist, having populous multiplayer lobbies, and being in on the discussion of new games on GAF and elsewhere.

Honestly OP, I do think so. At the same time if you're reaching around that 40's age you might just be jaded with gaming too.

At this point, all I'm playing is Nioh 2 on my PS5. Every other game on any other platform just bores me to death.

It all began when the “consoles are dead” generation. Launched like a Vita with no prospect of further support. When the consoles started flying off the shelves it was already too late. The industry started again making games that won’t arrive until way later in the generation. Bloodborne two years after the release and we all know how the new Mass Effect was rushed out.

Since then the industry has stablished itself in a comfort place of boring open worlds (everyone of them) and online experiences with both adding nothing unique to the medium. This is the generation I stoped playing for the first time in about 30 years of gaming.

Meanwhile we have the tiny output of the first party. Namely: Nintendo making the same games for 25 years. Microsoft unable to get their stuff together, cancelling projects, exploiting the same IPs over and over again, just to, in the end, realise that they weren’t doing enough. So they bough half of western industry. And Sony, who has been closing studio after studio, specially in Europe. So now they have evolved from the guys who invented the author indie game with Ico to the guys who are making the same cinematic experience in all of their games.

I mostly play Destiny 2 nowadays because Halo always relax me. And collect 40K. Because isn’t dead, like this medium.

Op you are not getting old, its that you cannot be surprised by nowadays games. Most companies now play safe with same formula over and over again or the others are more focused on social pandering to minorities than on releasing good games.

Climbing in VR, here you go
I don’t want VR, I want to see more open world game to have free climbing, to me it will make the traversal more fun.

If Monster Hunter on Switch can do this, so can PS4/PS5.

Its not can do or not, if the feature doesn't bode well with gameplay... each its own after but I just find it funny

No grappling hook in 13 Sentinels, does it makes it a lesser game ? Nope because its not needed, just like free climbing in GOT

It's just a perception thing, driven mainly by the much larger size of the market which now side-lines what used to be the main game types - still bigger in absolute terms but relatively much less important.

I don't even needed to be fast moving, all I want is free climbing instead of only able to climb in marked areas like you see in Uncharted games.

Kind off-topic, but I think both have their place in gaming. I will concede that 'restricted climbing' (or whatever we should call it) has gotten quite old at this point, and is often not implemented in interesting ways. But I think it has potential uses for level design, even in an open world game. Maybe if it implemented in ways more similar to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, where reflexes and timing plays a role, it wouldn't be as much 'tilt stick forward to progress'. Although I think the same criticism can be levied at free climbing. In BotW, a lot of the time you can scale a mountain by just pushing forward and having enough stamina. They spice things up by putting platforms you can rest on and rain making you slip, but it could be greatly improved by challenging you in more varied ways (in my opinion).

Certainly free climbing also synergizes well with good level design - I haven't tried the Rise demo but I'm sure the maps are all heavily designed around the idea of extreme freedom of movement. But I doubt it would work as well in a game that is heavily scripted and relies on funneling the player down specific paths to do more cinematic things (like Uncharted).

I guess my overall point is - Both types of climbing has their purposes and the most important thing is making it engaging/challenging for the player. A weakness of large open worlds is the copy-paste world design, as it would take far to many resources to tailor make each location. Therefore the climbing often ends up being little more than window dressing, whether or not the climbing is free or restricted.

People judging the industry by playing 3 AAA (the same) by year... come on
Well, let’s see how playing AAA was not so long before. Before before Kinect, “the consoles are dead” and the dreaded GaaS.

Your example makes zero sense, in GoT has grappling hook and its open world game, able to use your grappling hook every wall can make traversal interesting, I don’t understand what so bad about that.
Kind off-topic, but I think both have their place in gaming.
I would say restricted climbing works better in linear games, but in open world games you want freedom to explore.
