The PlayStation 5 GPU Will Be Supported By Better Hardware Solutions, In Depth Analysis Suggests

GAF's Pleasant Genius
This is true but we are referring to the GPU. Will future NextGen games and engines benefit from more GPU cores vs a smaller number and higher clocks? That seems to be the case when it comes to CPUs.

On CPU’s it depends on how the high clock was achieved. High clock with a deep pipeline and bad branch prediction yes while in other cases you might talk about less than linear scaling but you are scaling nonetheless.
CPU and GPU are both under the same virtualisation layer and both are affected albeit MS always promised a very small performance hit they never promised it was free.

It depends on the workload you run on the GPU I guess, graphics are still very parallelism friendly but complex shaders using lots of registers and having branchy logic you end up having more problems keeping all those thousands of processing elements fed and being more latency sensitive and having a higher clockspeed can help (and if the shading results is dependent by previous rendering steps or neighbouring pixels you introduce dependencies where doing something faster gets the job done more efficiently).

TL;DR: some scenarios will show off the much higher CU count of the XSX (albeit held back a bit by XSS which seems to have a considerably lower geometry processing rate too) and some others will be tuned to PS5’s strengths while tons of third party titles will be evenly split with minor differences between consoles.

After skimming the giant article, and thinking maybe this knows something, it all goes out the window after reading this:

"This also means that the PS5's sound processing will take less CPU power from the system compared to the SX - which, again, counts against the SX in terms of resources available to run games"

This shows he has no clue as to what he's talking about, the series x also has its own separate chip for sound processing. It doesn't rely on the cpu for sound processing either.
If he doesn't know this basic fact, he's likely 99% lost on the rest.....

Nice try in attempting to discredit him.

It seems to be for the same reason to be honest... More powerful platform on paper but less mature development environment and harder to program for.
The PS3 was harder to program for because the Cell was an unknown architecture that had very peculiar quirks... add to this that it had two different kind of "CPUs", very small local core caches for the cell cores made them hard to manage, and more importantly most programmers were only used to single threaded operations.

Also, the PS3 did have a weaker GPU, what made it shine was that later more graphical operations were moved to the Cell (which was supposed to handle all graphics at first).

Now a days programmers can use multiple threads when necessary, and the series x has a 50 years old architecture... which is the same as the PS5's (minus different bespoke hardware, but CPU/GPU are pretty close).
I'm sure things will improve massively in the next few years for Xbox. Especially with a unified development platform
It may get better, but I would not bet too much money on this, if you look at the complete specs you can see that MS and Sony made different predictions about the future performance requirements of gaming software, Sony placed a bet on very fast asset streaming, a lot of fill rate requirement, a lot of triangles, and well fed compute engines with a unified cache system.

MSs engineers placed a bet on slightly improved raw calculation--which is nice, but does not seem to overcome other issues.

If the problems arise with the split memory pool there may be workarounds that are developed over time, but no matter what happens these consoles were always going to be in the same ballpark in terms of performance, the problem is that MS led people to believe that they had a significantly better machine... which was never to be the case, even if you only took the 12 vs 10tf debate as the only metric.

Wait a minute. The 2.5 GB reserved by the SX operating system comes from the 560gb/s pool? Why not use the slower portion?

If true that is very stupid! And would partially explain X's problem

More secret sauce bullshit. Both consoles are GREAT and will provide awesome gaming experiences. The Series X with its 12 TFs, and all the new studio acquisitions, and talent added to their studios, will bear fruit.

Also, both consoles are very close. Both AMD soc’s, with zen 2 CPU’s. Why is everyone so quick to compare, and the on the console they don’t have? This is a very weird and disturbing trait. End of the day we here are a
GAMERS. Why does everything have to be compared and scrutinized? Enjoy whatever console or PC you game on. Stop worrying about the rest. Cant we all just get along?

I doubt this, it would make little sense for System to need memory that fast.

I want to think it isn't the case, but it's not impossible with the results we are seeing. If true, it'd be really bad...
We haven't heard anyone credible confirm this so I wouldn't pay too much attention to it. There could many reasons why Series X is performing worse than expected, a while ago we had someone like Jason Schrier saying that Series X was coming in hot at launch. I doubt Microsoft are so stupid as to give System faster Ram, it makes no logical sense that the System would require it. Let's wait and see, more credible people might speak soon on this subject.

Thats the thing man! How long are you going to hang onto Phil's promises? The XBOX has yet to deliver since 2013. Please, just buy the PS5 and have fun playing all the great 1st party games and better experience the third party games, not least due to the phenomenal DualSense. MS is not your or my relative/ father/ uncle/ brother, we do not have to keep giving them chances. They had plenty of chances to deliver stunning games and new IPs, and they blew it. We must move on.
