Wow. I just finished this game. Man. THis game. I was a big fan of Zestiria despite its short comings, and I loved the cast there. But playing this game blew me away, Velvet is amazing!! The voice actor portraying her aggression did a fantastic job, her shrieks and cries were intense!

This game also made Tales of Zestiria better with all the little connections and backstories too.

Sp. Damn. Awesome.

Basically my thoughts as well, just finished the game aswell and loved it. Liked Zestiria but wasn't fan of ending and the battle gimmick they had for that game. But Beseria seems to have fixed both of those short comings.
Also I love Rokurou probably my favorite tales character in along time, and don't understand the Magliou hate lol i found her enjoyable. And Velvet was great i really felt for her and her voice actor was amazing. This really gave me hope for the next tales of game. Also Eizen is awesome

Wish they kept the Colosseum battles though, and the after battle skits have been lacking as of late. But the Skits are alot better.

I loved Magilou - Magikazam!! Her writing and the way her voice actor seemlessly flowed through the sentences really let her personality shine. She was definitely a stand out for me.

I think if i combine Zestiria and Berseria together as one tale/story, then that is the best I've ever experienced in a 'Tales of' game, and like you, gives me massive confidence in the next installment.

Magilou is the absolute best. And yeah, her dub VA was really great. She really nailed the sarcasm and whimsicalness.

Plus the fact that she could say Magigigika Mirdin Do Din Norurun Dou in one breath.

It's weird, I preferred Zestiria to Berseria, but I did enjoy them both, dungeons (and oddball decision to leave faster movement until later in the game and requiring finding a node in Berseria) aside.

Very enjoyable tale, and
stuff like Magilou's grave showing up in Zestiria and fighting Eizen all ties in really well. Both endings were somewhat sad, with not one, but two heroic sacrifices in Berseria, one of the results of which (Maotelus) is corrupted in Zestiria's time, and the other (Velvet) we assume is unchanged as we never hear from Inominant in Zestiria. I think, ultimately, that Zestira's ending is what really got me, what with Rose staring at the earthpulse and then the game showing her malakhim companions at her grave...followed by Sorey's return hundreds of years later. Berseria's ending I didn't like quite as much, especially after Velvet tells Phi to live...which is followed by him immediately choosing to become an eternal god instead..bit of mood whiplash there.

I'm replaying Symphonia for the first time since 2004 and while I like it, I'm itching to play through Zestiria/Berseria. Will Symphonia be unplayable to me if I go play those two then come back to it? :(

Are all of the arts for my npc party members active in battle? Or do I have to manually set what moves they can use?
I see all of the checkboxes by their attacks and they all seem to be on, but when I hit L2 to look at the Set Artes page it shows only a few of their moves. Or is the Set Artes page just for when I want to take direct control of that character?

Just a random thought, I know a lot of people seemed to hate the Tales of Zestiria anime. But watching it after finishing Berseria, I'm honestly loving it.

Having played Berseria you already know why things are the way they are, you recognize things mentioned, and the callbacks are great. Though seeing that
Eizen became a dragon
was beyond depressing (I admittedly had no previous knowledge of Zestiria before so this was surprising).

Then near the end of season 2 when
Sorey has the dream of Velvet telling him about why birds fly and giving him sound advice, then wakes up to see the Scarlet Night
...I about lost it. So good.

The Tales of Festival starts on Friday. Hopefully we get news on a new title then.

This is the first year we don't have a Tales game in the pipeline waiting to be translated since 2012.

Tales of Graces 2012
Tales of Xillia 2013
Tales of Xillia 2 2014
Tales of Zestiria 2015
Tales of Berseria 2016

I enjoyed my yearly Tales games. :(

It's has be a Tales of Vesperia for PS4 in the west finally.. It just makes too much sense with the anniversary coming up and all. This would also give them extra time to dedicate production towards a full next gen title; from the "rumors," sounds like it will most likely be PS4/Switch

That'd be depressing, but it probably is some sort of port or remaster.

I hope not. I want them to take their time with whatever the new game is since it'll be the first PS4 exclusive title most likely.

I can see either a Vesperia, Berseria Switch, or Destiny collection happening. That or nothing gets announced, which is fine too.

Nah, BN said themselves they're putting Tales on Switch, and if it was Berseria they probably would've just said. So it's something, but a new game? Ehhhn.

Where's the long ass list of trademarks, lol. We should've gotten some by now if it were a new game, shouldn't we?

Probably the funniest thing about the next Tales game likely not hitting until 2019 is that it'll be the only PS4/Switch only title, and the game after that will be full cross-gen (for PS5) again lol. They really delayed doing a PS4 only game until the end of the system's life.

They will definitely announce something, but yeah, it's going to be a port.

The next game sounds like it will be cross-platform with Switch as well, so I'm interesting to see what they are going to come up with.

They still have 2 trademarks unused at this time:

“Tales of Orfellia”
“Tales of Alestia"

I don't think it'd be that weird to announce a Berseria Switch port in a few days. It basically lines up with them giving the PS3/PS4 release about a year to itself, then announcing a Switch port that includes some DLC or something like that. They haven't been clear on whether they're also releasing something for the PS4 this fiscal year as well, if they aren't I think it just being a Berseria port makes sense.

They've made like, no real effort to get the attention of people besides those paying to attend the event, so for now I'm not expecting anything noteworthy.

Even if it is a port, why just announce it nonchalantly in a yearly report/interview like that when they have a yearly Tales Festival coming up at the end of this week? They said they're putting out a Switch Tales game before March 2018. Way too soon for it to be a new game. It'll be a port of something at least. Also doesn't mean that they're going to be developing for the Switch from now on either. Next mainline title is going to be on the PS4 with no PS3 version according to previous interviews, and I want them to take advantage of the hardware, so hopefully it's not cross-platform with the Switch. Own both, but I want to see what the team can do with the PS4 hardware and hopefully a new engine.

Considering how the studio operates I'd be willing to wager that the next Tales is going to be far more constrained by its budget than by any possible switch port. I don't exactly expect them to aim for Horizon level visuals, lol.

Beat it a couple weeks ago. I liked it for the most part, probably give it a solid 7.5. The cast was kinda weak, but I loved the battle system.

Isn't Tales of Festival this Friday?? Hyped to see what gets announced.

Never said that, don't expect them either. Would like to see what they do with Unreal Engine 4.

So I finally got around to playing this, and it's shaping up to be my favorite Tales since Vesperia. I liked Zestiria well enough, mainly for the cast, but it had left me feeling a bit meh about the series. Berseria has really been great though. The equipment system is way better than Zestiria's, there are a lot more towns, and the story feels far less generic. I like how it's fleshing out Zestiria's story some too while still working as a standalone title.

Also, despite her extremely impractical wardrobe choices, I think Velvet's gonna end up being my favorite Tales protagonist. I love how much of a reversal she is from Sorey. And that's not to say I didn't like Sorey, but her more personal goal of revenge is far more compelling for me than the whole pure-hearted savior thing. Not sure how much is left, but I've only got one more
therion
to collect, so I'm pretty sure things will be escalating soon.

Just some thoughts. I started playing this the other day and I want to say after 10 hours it easily is pretty good! I mean wow... Velvet is such a different MC for tales. She's bitchy and really tough, butch, kinda like Lightning but with a personality atm. I like her very much atm and I thought this Tales escalated pretty quickly compared to previous tales games. I haven't played Zestiria yet so that will wait until after this.

Some thoughts: It's a pretty basic but good story at the moment. Velvet does not fuck around and as far as I'm concerned she doesn't want anyone in her way because
her brother Laphicet was killed by Artorius
. Keep it up, girl. She's really likeable.

Rokuro: Meh, there's not much to say about him but he's funny I guess? I feel he's quite boring, honestly.

Eizen: He's pretty great. I already love his story and background. He seems like a pretty cool guy and I can't wait to find out more about him.

Magilou: no... just no. This is high pitched female x in the series and YES she's annoying. Meh, maybe she's cool? Who knows.

Boy Velvet named after her brother: Not much to say about him atm. I tend to not like these little kid characters.

Basically, this game is good right now because of Velvet. She's a nice change from whiny tales character mains or characters that cry when they dont get what they want.

I'm just about to fight Artorius at the shrine and can't wait to beat his arse.

The skits are easily my favourite because of the animations. It shows they put a lot of work. I remember when tales was just square portraits talking.

It easily is more darker than other tales games.... really nice touch! The environments are also pretty nice and this is coming from someone who absolutely hates Xillia's layout. It seems they've improved on that front but the simple dungeons are still there.

Battle system: Velvet is really overpowered or it just feels that way. I like the battle system but I haven't died yet in the game playing on normal. I feel like I can just spam as Velvet and devour anything to win. I also really didn't like the early introductions to mystic artes.... just feels a little too easy on normal. There are some tough fights but maybe hard would be the better choice here. I dont know... I usually play through normal first and there is some degree of challenge. This one feels like Xillia and on the easier side.

I think you will like Laphicet in the end. Boy is really awesomely badass
Not much to say about Magilou though. You won't know much about her until late game

Finished it. Loved it. Know why birds fly now.

Really enjoyed the character development Velvet and Laphicet got towards the end. Favorite moments in the game:
1.
Laphicet saving Velvet from Innominat. "You gave me a name when I was just a number!" ;_;
2.
Eizen vs. Zaveid. Really helped flesh out Zaveid's character, and knowing everything that happens with Eizen and Edna later makes it all pretty moving. ;_;
3. Everything Magilou says and does.

One thing is bugging me that I was really hoping would be revealed though. The identity of
Lailah. Since there are so many ties with Zestiria, I refuse to believe that Lailah was just chilling offscreen the whole time! Sure, that's what Edna did, but we got a ton of references about her through Eizen. Anyway, before I started the game I was sure that Seres would be Lailah, but that obviously wasn't the case, so I kept looking for signs of her in others lol. Eventually I began to suspect she was Magilou. There are a bunch of little things that seemed to add up for me. Her fire magic, using paper as a weapon, having Laphicet read her paper after battle being kinda similar to Lailah's fortune telling, the long hair, having close ties with the Normin, and both having quirky personalities (though Magilou's is way more extreme). Also, early in the game when the party stays in Loegres, Magilou has a short scene overlooking the town that felt very similar to one Lailah has in Pendrago, the same place.
Ok I'm done rambling. Am I totally off base and just seeing what I wanna see?

Update! I'm pretty deep into Berseria now and it is still really good. I just don't know but I've been getting so used to Magilou now that I can stomach her. She's really interesting and makes the skits very funny. Man, some of the skits in this tales entry are golden. I'm really liking this cast and that's something I thought I would never say. Bland maps but beautiful environments is what is the major problem though. Recycled enemies as well in tales needs to stop. I saw a Wyvern in Aldina plains that looked exactly like the xillia model. It just left a bit of "wow, this is so lazy" in my head.

As for the story... I'm really enjoying this. I'm about 33 hours in now
at Velvet's hometown reunion which was obviously a trap. Seriously.... anyone saw that coming.
Also, that geoboard you get is pretty cool.

More spoilers so dont read if you haven't finished or are at the part i'm at etc

Eleanor is wonderful. She's probably my favourite character in this game right now. She's got a very calm character and they handled her very well up to this point.
When she said she wanted to show Laphicet the sights in Loegres I was screaming at my TV OH KNOW YOU DON't, woman!!!! and then her whole reveal where she wants to fight for us... great. I loved that about her. I enjoy her character because she's the direct opposite of Velvet and interactions with them are interesting. Eleanor's reveal that she wont betray the group was beautiful because the music associated with it is very powerful. I won't lie... I was suspicious of Eleanor but she knows a lot more about the world than I expected. But yeah, she's definitely a strong member in the cast right now.
Her moments are nice and she's extremely fun to play. She makes this cast likeable,
imo... even used by Velvet... she understands the consequences of the Abbey and Artorius. She's a bad spy and she even says so. She was treated like shite by everyone around her and I appreciate her getting over her hatred for daemons. Velvet beat the crap out of her.... poor girl but now she's stronger than ever cause that. I expected a very bland character in her but she's great so i'm happy. I mean... it's really nice to see her not betray the group when she was obviously going to have her head eaten by Velvet if she did obey Artorius. Alvin in Xillia betrayed the group more times than I can count and everyone welcomed him back like idiots. I'm glad to see Velvet was suspicious of Eleanor and violent towards her for those reasons.

Velvet drives this game forward for me as well. She's a wonderful character and I can tell her VA was very into the role. She's not generic and cries about things. She's hellbent on a mission that's vital to her life. She doesn't lose character much and I like that. She has guts, balls, whatever you want to call it. She's not afraid to
stab herself and taste blood knowing she was probably under a spell seeing her villagers alive again.
Damn, Velvet... you're insane but I like you that way. She's the demon lord that will bring end to the world? She doesn't care... if it were another tales character they'd probably cry and let the other members of the party comfort him/her *cough luke cough*

Man, I hated Magilou so much in the beginning but now having a extra week played on the game... I can safely say I do kind of like her character. She's annoying but she succeeds so well at making the cast likeable. Without her I don't think the skits would be nearly as funny. She's mysterious and we really don't know much about her... at least now that i'm 33 hours in I still dont really know what her goal is. She seems to be mysterious and I like that. Her attention to detail is amazing and I think that's what I like best about her now. However, fuck Bienfu cause I cant stand that thing.

It's kind of a miracle, tbh. I thought this cast would be the worst in existence of tales but they're really good together and now I can see it having gotten into a great chunk of the game. I'm extremely critical of this series as it is one I loved that has gone down the shitter, imo but Berseria is a step in the right direction so far. The story feels a little slower where I was previously but now it seems to be picking up again finally. I hope it continues to stay with my good experience but I'll need to finish it to really judge.

Got this during the steam sale, and I actually sort of feel guilty for not having purchased it full price a few months ago.

This game is probably the most overall consistent tales game since Vesperia.

Some other games have had higher highs--Graces probably had better systems--but the overall package here is solid as fuck.

The entire party is really cool, and Violet is definitely tied with Yuri as my favorite series protagonist.

How is she your favorite protagonist if you don't even remember her name?

It is by far the best Tales game since Graces and probably one of the best in the entire series. It has a GREAT cast with good character development, a strong story and the combat is very fun to play, but the loot system is awful and the world isn't much worth exploring (and you don't get much chance to do so either). I love Graces, Destiny, Abyss, Phantasia, and Symphonia, I like, but don't love Zesteria and I couldn't get through Xillia or Xillia 2, so take my opinion with that in mind.

It does many things well but has a lot of odd missteps and weak design choices which kinda drag it down, at least for me.

But it's pretty easy to get into and probably the most player-friendly/inviting title in the series so I'd say its worth it. As a package you'll probably like it more than Zestiria and Xillia as it definitely feels chunkier than any game since Graces even if it cheats a little bit getting there. It also develops its scenario ideas more or less thoroughly, which can't be said about the former games wholeheartedly.

I really wanted to like this, I thought the story was very promising and fresh, but I just couldn't get past some of the JRPG design styles, empty fields, encounters and fighting mechanisms. I was just button mashing in the fights, pushing button to make my character climb ladders and running in boringly constructed dungeons with same hallways/rooms after one another.

It just wasn't my kind of game. Shame really.

I finally finished it last night at around 50 hours. I think the story took a hit during the 2nd arc of the game where
You have to get the Therions and find earthpulses.
I also really really didn't like how Innominat is somehow Velvet's brother Laphicet and he has a 12 year disease so he asked for Artorius to kill him on the scarlet night. I think that's when this went very downhill for me to extremely tropey. That being said... the second part of the game does have some amazing moments that clearly show what Velvet is.
She's a terrible human being that still wants to kill Artorius even after finding out the truth.
I honestly thought that Innominat wasn't going to be her brother but an endless slew of illusions so that kinda killed the story a bit when we find out he REALLY is her brother.

Is there anything to do post game?

Ending spoilers:
Alright, so birds fly because they want to fly and dont care if their wings break. It's basically like saying the power of the will to do something will not be stopped by God. It's a typical tales trope that's getting super tiring if anything. I loved how dark this entry was but even then it went back to the same themes any other tales game does. The final slew of bosses was actually really a common tales trope as well.
The villains use something called armatus to get more powerful. Once the armatus came to play, I was reminded of Tales of Symphonia, hell the final place in Berseria reminds me so much of Derris Kharlan. I wonder if that was done on purpose? I felt the final boss battle with Innominat and Artorius had some amazing scenes. Those fight scenes were really cool but then the actual battle with Armatized Artorius was underwhelming. He felt a little too easy I guess. I'm guessing I now know what the dragon in Zestiria symbolizes since it's probably Laphicet because he becomes a dragon in the end of Berseria and ''remakes'' the world. Honestly, the ending is extremely sad but I didn't get that love between Laphicet and Velvet as a family connection. I felt in the end that they were actual lovers. In fact the ending really reminds me of FFXIII when Vanille and Fang stay frozen just like how in Berseria, Velvet and Laphicet stay locked into one another forever devouring. It's a symbol of love to me and well I felt in the end Laphicet really did love Velvet because he blushes all the time (not as Innominat)
but as Laphicet your party member. I know that's technically not her brother but the contrasts there are obvious and Phi tells her he loves her at the end.

Character end spoilers:

Eleanor:
I really still liked Eleanor in the end. She's a really great kind and caring woman that probably has everyone after her heart. I laughed at the ending where those two men are arguing over her! XD. She's the motherly figure of the group and her care for humans, daemons, and therions is really well done. She didn't leave the group after joining you which I first suspected would happen. I think her reasons for staying with the group alone are enough for me to like her. She's weird, funny, but a very nice breath of fresh air in terms of the cast. It's obvious she really likes Velvet in the end even though she had divine hatred for her at very first glance. She casted aside all her stupid beliefs and saw that the Abby really are terrible terrible people that want to steal the wills of people. Hell, she forgives Artorius for probably not being a villain once but then in the end she makes it clear she wants him dead and I truly loved that about her.
I think my favourite things about Eleanor is that she contrasts with Velvet really well and makes the skits and interaction interesting. For instance, they both want Laphicet to themselves and Eleanor even eavesdrops on Velvet when Phi combs her hair...
lol. I don't really get the impression Eleanor loves Laphicet but I think she did like him as a friend since it was the first Malakhim she ever really interacted with outside tools.
She even gets interested in Rokorou and Aizen at times and their history. Eleanor is the smart caring woman of the group

Rokourou:
I honestly felt this guy was boring at first but his reasons for fighting his own brother and killing him in the end are crazy interesting. He even says he's still not stronger than Shigure in the end because he had to chicken out with a 3rd blade which is admittedly true because Shigure was overwhelming him in battle.
His plotline was enjoyable and I think even though he's a daemon he's still very very human. His plotline was a good point in the game and I enjoyed it. Oh yeah, he has some funny moments with the women in the group!

Magilou:
Ahhhh Magilanica is her real name in the end and she's a student of Melchior. That was very hidden throughout the game as she's mostly a funny joke character. When her plotline starts unfolding I think it was one of the higher points in the game. Like whoa... she was actually an exorcist? I knew it... since she's got arts.
Magilou is an amazing character who I HATED at first. She makes the atmopshere of the group feel less lonely and she tries to cheer everyone up with her funny jokes.
It turns out she's possibly one of my favourite characters in the franchise now and I hated her at first like I said! My reasons for liking Magilou are because while she is an exorcist, her reasons for staying with Velvet were always mysterious and even then she's a very energetic lady. Her serious parts in the game are interesting because you think she's a damn joke character at the beginning-middle xD. She has the best skits in the game by far and this is coming from someone that wanted to kick her face in at first.
Never will I judge an obscure character by her intro again.

Velvet:
Possibly one of my favourite tales characters as well. She's killing everyone and everything and pushing people around the entire game until a certain point where she becomes happy again but still wants to kill because that's just who she is.
My favourite thing about her is her determination and strong character traits. I guess her outfit is ridiculous but it shows how ruffled she is in her life. The torn clothes symbolizes that she's torn away from society, imo. Her love for Laphicet (her brother)
is rather creepy in the end though... because I think the game leans that way.
You have Velvet looking at him like a lover... and they are even embraced naked in the credits. Eleanor also likes Laphicet and there's even a skit about how Magilou gives them advice over him. I felt like Velvet drove the game forward with her attitude and the game is very dark because of her. She understands that killing Artorius is what she wants. I really enjoyed that about Velvet.

Aizen:
Another interesting character. Cursed to the very end but that is what makes him who he is. The reapers curse still makes him go on with his life even forever cursed. His story with Aifread and Zavede was VERY interesting and admittedly kept me going forward. He's such a good character and respectful. I really liked Aizen because although he is cursed... he still thinks it is a blessing as long as he wins every battle.
His expedition treasures was also very interesting and he brought so much needed historical analysis to the group. Normally, the historians in Tales are very nerdy like Jade Curtis for example but Aizen was well done since his character shifts to point to point. A strong and interesting character that I didn't see coming from a mile away.

I have a few questions. I was told to play Zestiria after this since it is one of the worst entries in the series. If I enjoyed Berseria as much as I did, will I get to know the characters from Berseria more? Will I find out how
they live in the end?
It's an unclear ending after all

Why does the ending of Berseria seem happy but still taboo? Nobody is really happy in the end... they keep on going fighting because that's who they are. Will this be explored more
in Zestiria?

And my last question.... is Zestiria REALLY that bad that I would drop it right away?

About Innominat
he isn't really Velvet's brother though. He is a different being with Laphicet's memories. Laphicet died that night
Also, you don't like Laphicet? You didn't say anything about him

It's really confusing to me, honestly and the game doesn't explain this that well.
I think it is actually her brother but again like you said in a different body which explains his viciousness. He did die that night but he still knows Velvet and the whole shattering of the comb at the end really got through to me that it was her brother.

damn, I forgot Laphicet, lol.

Nah, it was clear to me that he wasn't actually her brother, just that Innominat was using the image of his body and his memories. Innominat existed before her brother even existed, so it wouldn't make much sense for her brother to be Innominat.

You're really missing the message of the game.

Remember, the theme of the game is emotion vs reason/logic.
Just like Seres, even though she isn't technically Celica anymore, she still had her memories, thoughts and feelings and couldn't let them go.
"Innominat" still had Laphicet's memories/thoughts/feelings and felt like him, and Velvet figured that out near the end. That's why she did the thing with the comb to throw him off balance and confirm it. (Phi also did the same thing with the compass for an opening.)

Logic has no basis on what/how they felt.

Since I forgot to add my thoughts on Laphicet... here they are.

Spoilers for the end etc etc

Well, honestly, Laphicet is the kind of character trope I hate in tales and that goes for every other little kid in the series but I will admit he grew on me a LITTLE towards mid game to the end. This is because most of his scenes during those parts of the game are great and most notably I mean his fight with Innominat and intervening to save the group. Laphicet is an interesting character who I absolutely hated at first. I thought it was Velvet's brother reincarnated or something. Their ''love'' was a little cringe worthy,
imo. I mostly understood it as love because family which is normal but I got a little uncomfortable during the scene where he brushes Velvet's hair because it was very emotional but pointing to the way he loves her. Rokorou even asks Laphicet if he went in the bath with Velvet and he starts blushing. It's obvious the kid is crushing on her throughout the game. I know he's not really Velvet's brother but the resemblance there is too uncanny to not be cringe if anything. The way Velvet tells him Laphi did this to me, I cooked for Laphi, Laphi was my only friend, Laphi was everything to me, etc I started to really compare the dead Laphicet with Phi. He certainly grew on me in the parts where he said he refuses to be called Phi and hates it and started to move away from Velvet to see if she would have a good side. But his fate in the end was to become an Empyrean (dragon)
who I assume plays a major role in Zestiria as the symbol of the game is a dragon. Laphicet kind of started out very boring but he grew as a character and had more emotions and even read ancient tongue which was actually quite cool. He's also a very curious kid and made great conversations in terms of skits... lmao, the one with bienfu is great.
