Switch also get lot mutiplatform games as well, its BS to say Switch getting no 3rd party support. The reason why I own Switch because get exclusive third party games that don't come out on other systems.
Erm...can you print to where I said the Switch has no third party support? đź’©
With Nintendo's games selling so well the Switch does not need the third party output.
Lol so you prefer less than more.

PS4 has great third-party, much better than the Switch. But I always want more. Like CrossFirenX and Warhammer 40,000 Darktide, I want those to come out on Playstation.

There's a few peoplen on GAF who seem fixated on sales. Same goes for hardware. It's selling well so next generation Nintendo will continue to serve up dated hardware and sell it for a high price.

All these games I listed are being developed by third party developers, Switch is not lacking on third party support. In fact you rarely see Capcom and Platinum Games make exclusives for other systems
The difference between third party and first party is the publisher, not the developer. Otherwise Pokémon SnS, Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Kirby: Star Allies are all third party games as well.

My point exactly, the only Nintendo sales thread allowed on here are the negative ones, when the Nintendo console in question bombs. Of course we are allowed multiple threads praising the success of the PS4. ;)

If the Switch is an initial success then then the sages state it's just a lucky start, then as it reaches each and every sales milestone, impending doom is only just around the corner. Of course when all those wise predictions turn out to be incorrect it's just pure luck, that a console with no power and very few games is selling this well.

Some can't handle something they do not personally like doing well, so have to try and undermine it at every possible opportunity, sad really.

Even that the case, Bravely default 2 is still Square Enix game even its being published by Nintendo in west, Same way Demon's Souls still Sony game even tho it was published by Atlus in west. I dont think Nintendo own Bravely Default IP same way they own Fire Emblem and Smash.

No of course not, nobody would want less games on their platform, as that would be insane, my point is that Nintendo do not rely solely on third party support, however there has been a rich vein if indie games that have found a nice home on the Switch.

Whilst that list is impressive for Nintendo it must scare off 3rd party developers. There's only one game I can spot not made by Nintendo! Surely that's not the full list as I'd imagine something like dragon quest being on there?

That's no surprise. Nintendo's first-party games are consistently of high quality and are fun to play. You could have a fun time buying only their software titles. As for third parties, the seem to treat Switch as a dumping ground for older titles that premiered on other consoles, and while it's nice to see the older hits like The Witcher, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Bioshock and Katamari Damacy, I'm left wondering what happened to the new videogames. Remember that crazy idea?

So far, I think Switch is, well...okay. It's nice. It does what it's supposed to do and if you're a fan of Nintendo's franchises and indie pixel-art Metroidvanias and "greatest hits" retro compilations, you'll have a fun time.

Square Enix does own Bravely Default but I don't think Nintendo fully owns Fire Emblem or Smash either. Intelligent Systems at least part owns Fire Emblem and HAL at least part owns Smash Bros, but I'm not sure if they fully own the IPs or if they share them with Nintendo.

Fire Emblem and Smash is still considered part of Nintendo IP but Bravely Default is not, so its third party game even if Nintendo publishing in west. Its same way with Demon's Souls, a third party like Atlus might have publish the game for west but Demon's Souls still is first party game for Sony.

2021 is going to be monstrous for them, that's EVEN considering supply for PS5 and Series systems clearing up by H2 2021.

Quite insane, really.

If you add them up cumulatively PS4 still leads (~ $36.7 billion vs ~ $27.3 billion), but there's no denying that Nintendo has easily been outpacing Sony when launch-aligned (which I guess was the point of this graphic :p).
Those were cumulative figures for both companies.

Seems like we have a different way if classifying things. For me Demon's s Souls would be first party in Japan and third party in the West.

Out of curiosity, how would you classify Spiderman PS4, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity?

If Sony or Nintendo owns the IP then its first party even if third party developed the game.

You say Demon's Souls its third party in west but it doesn't change that Sony own that IP, you wont see it coming to other platforms.

OK, so if I understand you correctly:

  • Spiderman, Spiderman: Mile Morales and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 are third party games published by Sony and Nintendo respectively, because Marvel owns those IPs not Sony or Nintendo
  • In Asia Age of Calamity is a first party game because Nintendo owns the Zelda IP, even though Koei Tecmo owns the Warriors IP and is both the developer and the publisher.

I’m not sure Marvel deal since I think Sony owns Spider man IP.

With Age of Calamity I definitely consider it first party.

Sony owns Spider-Man IP, so it’s 1st party.

I mean 100 mil is a given at this point, right?

Yes, if only because Nintendo appears to want to drag out the Switch as long as possible.

Their consoles tend to be either massive hits or colossal failures. When they have a hit, they'll delay the next console as long as possible.

Wii U came out before PS4 and Xbox One.

Sony owns Spider-Man IP, so it’s 1st party.
As pointed out Spiderman is not owned by Sony, which by the definition would them third party games. Likewise it would make Ultimate Alliance 3 a third party game, even though Nintendo publishes it in every region and reports on its sales as first party software.

That's why I just focus on who the publisher is, as it makes things much simpler.

You’re right. Thanks for pointing it out. As you state, they publish it and include it in 1st party sales figures.

If you just look at publisher then it makes some Dragon Quest game on DS first party just because it was published by Nintendo.

Exactly. On page 7 of Nintendo's report here they list Dragon Quest XI, Dragon Builders 2 and Bayonetta 3 as 'Nintendo Products' in some regions, alongside games like Animal Crossing, Astral Chain, Metroid and Zelda.

But I also see Daemon X Machina but that game is not first party as far as I know.

The buying multiples for a single household have to be a big help for the Switch, either way, glad for its success.
Wow. 79.87 million. I like their chances at surpassing 80 million.

Nintendo is the publisher of Daemon X Machina outside Japan and reports its sales in those countries as its own software sales.

I guess what I consider “first party” is very different than yours.

We are entering the peak year of the Switch.. up until this point they were just upping production but this year they will surpass 30 million
I just cannot wait for Breath of the Wild 2 to launch, hope it's sooner than we all realize

And?

Switch released 4 years after Wii U released.

I'd say most people buying switch aren't hardcore Nintendo fans.
That fan base would only net you roughly 13 million sales as we seen on the WiiU

Wouldn't say I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan, but I did buy a Wii U. I actually never even bought a normal Wii.

I think PS4 will end selling more than Switch in the long run, because Nintendo consoles get replaced faster by their successors, PlayStation consoles keep in the market selling during more years.

PS4 had an extra Q3 at launch, and during the current FY Switch saw a spike due to the Covid. Before the spike, Nintendo knew AC was coming, but they predicted Switch was going to sell 19M this FY, exactly the same PS4 sold during this same 5th FY. This means Nintendo expected Switch would continue FY after FY performing basically the same PS4 did on each FY.
I don't think the DS and 3DS were replaced that fast, in fact 3DS is still selling in mil 4 years down the line after Switch launch, FP games support for 3DS kept going for 2 years more until 2018 WarioWare Gold.

Only if the original Switch stops selling will Nintendo stop supporting it, even with their successors launched.

Nintendo already raised new forecast for Switch.
