Source? And only need to glance over the graph to see Nintendo did better in the period corresponding to Wii+DS

It's already up to 116 as of March
PS4 was down 75% yoy for q1 compared to 2020 (which was already down 50% vs 2019) down to just 500k, if holds all year ps4 will only move about 1.5 million this year , reaching 120 million isn't a lock for ps4 unless sony does something to reinvigorate it's sales

I think this is bizarre considering how revolutionary the PS3/360 were. The Switch is ok but still well under par functionality wise.

The fucker needs a price drop, time for that sweet £199 with two controllers
It surprises me it's sold that many with it's £289 price tag.
PS2 was £129 at this point.

That would help but, an ultra low cost model targeting eastern Europe, southern asia, South America and africa, if someone could tap those markets with something affordable, if sony could get a ps4 equivalent to about 100 usd in those regions I bet they could blow past PS2 numbers (as long as games are cheap, too)

Personally i prefer the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I have a Nintendo Switch but I rarely play it, I have being playing mostly PS5 and PS4 games, and even some PS3 games that were remastered.

Nintendo got to confortable remastering Wii and Wii U games instead of creation new games. And most of the new games are not even developed by Nintendo, the're relaying on third-party studios like Tecmo Koei, Platinum Games, MercurySteam, Atlus, etc.

No I don't.
It's a different market that caters to different people.
It caters to both. If you want to use it as a console (which I mostly do) I can do that. If you want to use it as a portable console, you can do that too. It's your choice and works perfectly well in either situation. I almost exclusively use the "pro" controller, because mine is mostly docked. The joy cons NEVER come off my console.

So how is that basically not a console style usage? I definitely don't "port" it around. I think discounting this aspect of the "console" is to miss a major reason why it's such a hit.

This isn't hard.
Portables are a different type of device.
Switch IS a portable and portables rule Japan.

Your usage doesn't change this fact.

Also...
Switch caters to a different market than the PS/XB as does the other gimmicky Nintendo devices before it(wii/wii u)

That's for a single year, not the whole Wii-DS era. Dude, I know you can read, and the chart is very clear, their profits are not as high with the Switch as it was back then. Is that bad? No, absolutely not. No one is saying that. But you link me to that article and make me think you don't even know what we're arguing here. But keep high fiving with your buddies who liked your post so much.

It has already topped the biggest single year of the Wii-DS era, and is on track to do so again this year. Obviously, Switch is still in the middle of its life cycle, so we won’t know for sure how it stacks up against the Wii-DS era until it’s over.

Even in a worst case scenario of Switch profits dropping as sharply as they did in 2010-2011, they are still going to match the total profits of Wii+DS (though admittedly not inflation adjusted).

Your usage doesn't change this fact.

You say this while also adding your own personal opinion about what it is, what it can do and to whom it catters just to make things more complicated than they really are.
Amazing.

You just need to take a calculator and logical mind my friend. The trajectory of Nintendo Switch sales is currently showing indicates it's going to surpass Wii-NDS era profits without any problem.

by cheaper do you mean the same, because this might be shocking but after 4 years the ps3 was 300 usd for the standard model, and the xbox was 300 for the mid range and 200 for the budget model
You might want to look back at the history of both the PS3 and Xbox 360 they were 400 dollars that's with the price cut. And the switch has a 199 model out. If memory serves me correct the lowest point the 360 was ever sold at was 249.

Regardless of people say price matters. Either way both the PS3 and 360 did not have the price advantage the switch has during their console Life.

Switch itself is successful. But Nintendo has been more successful. They basically killed their home console business.
Why do people keep parroting this like Nintendo just didn't have it's highest profits ever destroying all previous generations with one platform?

You might want to check to see that the more expensive Switch model is outselling the Lite at over 3:1.

GAF GAF Switch Blunders

2017: "Switch will flop similar to WiiU, would only sell around 50m max lifetime. Nintendo is done"
2018: "All those fanboys had bought the console already, Switch sales gonna come crashing down hard"
2019: "This is the peak year (based on retards 6-year console cycle) and after this, the Switch sales will decline"
2020: "Switch is DOOMED, next-gen console are here"

2021: MULTIPLE EXCUSES AS SHOWN IN THESE THREADS' COMMENTS.

Let us see what's the majority of these pretexts for this year.

Is that what I said?
I don't compare portables to consoles.

PS2 was a DVD player but I'm sure you don't make that distinction when talking about its sales.

PS3 and PS4 were also bluray players.

PS5 is a 4k player.

See how that works?

Nope, my prices are correct and you're making stuff up to fit a narrative, the 360 actually cheaper than the Wii for a while, both were down to 299 within 3 years of release,
in 2008 the cheapest 360 was actually cheaper than the wii, and got as low as 180 for standard retail
feel free to peruse the archives and these
and the 360 always had a 299 model anyway
you might also be disappointed to find out the ps4 and xbox one were both the same price as the switch at the switch's launch so it NEVER had a price advantage and both cheaper than the switch in the US every single holiday season since it launched save for this 2020, when the xbox one and ps4 moved very few units,
clearly your memory is poor and you should really do 5 minutes of research before shifting to pompous know-it-all, that is of course, misinformed.

The only platform that Nintendo ever produced that did near Switch numbers initially before quickly fading into oblivion was the Wii, and we all know that was because it was exceptionally gimmicky attracting a bizarre demographic of non gamers, but hey, it still had some games I enjoyed.

Everything else they had near Switch's initial first couple years of success had a long and healthy shelf life.
The 3DS suffered a 27% dropped in sales in the equivalent of its 2021. The Switch increased by that amount, roughly. So, yes, Nintendo is lucky that Covid hit at the right time. I also think Sony has benefitted from this. The PS5 selling faster than the PS4 at $100 more would not have happened without Covid. It would probably have hit 15M by now if not for the supply constraints.

You can't possibly prove that is Covid related and not related Nintendo's software and the growing appeal of the Switch.

everything benefitted from covid boost, though for ps5 it certainly made a weird hypothetical cache 22- covid lead to shortage- but covid spiked demand so if sony could have produced a non-covid level of consoles they would have sold more but that could have only happened if there wasn't covid;however, they could only sell a non-covid level of consoles because they had covid production numbers

So base on Nintendo's history, we could expect another Switch in 2023.
Hell if it's a true Next-Gen Nintendo console we may hear about it next year.
Wonder if they'll keep to the script this time, or gamble with something else again 🤔

I could reply with “you can’t possibly prove that it is software related and not Covid forcing people and kids to stay at home”. People are consuming more during Covid. No reason to not think that the Switch did not benefit, especially with its unnatural growth in its 4th year.

I wouldn't doubt Covid played a role in it, but Switch sold 21 million the year before Covid was even a thing, better than any year the PS4 has ever had. Switch is much more appealing than 3DS to consumers overall without requiring a panic $100 price drop in it's first year. It's more successful by every metric and clobbering it in both hardware and software sales.

that's the thing, switch hit things just right with the switch trying to replicate the success will be a tough act to follow,
switch but more powerful, might not draw people in again, but then again the brand strength might be able to draw in a repeat audience,
new ! different! might deliver something great, but it might deliver a dud.
current success doesn't make future success a certainty, so hopefully Nintendo doesn't get complacent and assume their next machine will be a success just because the switch was

Good for Nintendo. I grew up with them and nothing else.

I find the switch to be a high quality handheld. It just doesn't have any power for anybody wanting to rock the dock.

Uh, what are we even discussing in this thread? No two gaming devices are directly comparable, there will always be a bunch of differences. That doesn't mean it's not interesting to look at their sales numbers together. We shouldn't treat lists like this as a competition, it's merely statistics.

That sounded preachy, I'm sorry 'bout that! The point is that rather than saying comparing Switch sales with PS4 sales is "misleading" because the Switch is a hybrid console, we could instead discuss: Would the PS4 have sold more if it too had a handheld mode?

I'm sure you'll let me know when it does, and I couldn't care less. Wii's trajectory was to surpass PS2 and fell off a cliff. So for the time being, I wouldn't go ahead and set things in stone for the Switch.
