Back in the day you had to make sure you set your camera angle first at a slight diagonal so you get some depth, then jump and watch your shadow on the ground. It gets easier in later games with a smoother camera that can be moved while moving more easily.

I think they gave Mario the punches specifically because it's harder to jump on Goombas.
Actually one of the things that is GOOD about Mario 64 is how it seems the camera is limited to set positions at what seems to be 45 degree angles. That's something I like in 3D World as it really helps an old fucker like me to cope.

Is anyone else trying to complete the MyNintendo missions to get the pin set? I'm stuck at 4/6 complete with the mission for purchasing 3D All Stars still unchecked. I bought it a few days ago. Anyone actually have that mission checked off?

I'm really jealous of the people who haven't played these games yet. This will be my 1000th playthrough of Mario 64 and I'm still very excited about it. The game aged somewhat, but it's very playable and the controls are absolutely AWESOME for such an early 3D title. It's fun to compare it to Odyssey, you'd expect to be a blowout but it isn't.
Yeah I'm looking forward to trying them all.
I really enjoyed Odyssey so I'm sure I'll enjoy all three games to some degree.

The only problem is that I may get too desperate to play Galaxy and skip straight to that one!
I'll def try and give 64 and Sunshine a fair shot though.

Supposedly the Mario Tour one will not update until 9/29, based on some random reddit post with an answer from Nintendo customer service. I haven't gotten that one to update yet, or done that Mario 3D purchase one, as I'm still waiting on my copy. If you buy it physical, just make sure to claim your gold points in the system menu.

Yeah I must admit holding off on Galaxy is going to be really hard. It's a game I've wanted to play for donkey's years but my console-phobia kept me away, and I can't wait to see it on my big TV. It's not the same emulating on my laptop.

Wondering if FLUDD and the spin move in Sunshine and Galaxy were implemented as an answer to the inherent trickiness of platforming in 3D environments.

A bit random but I just recently found out from Charlie Martinet himself that he says “So long King Bowser!”

but even as a kid I always legitimately thought he was saying so long gay bowser.
I've never been able to hear "so long" anything, it always sounded like gibberish to me for some reason.

Yeah I hear you.
My original plan was to try and hold out on Galaxy until near Christmas time as it seems like it'll be a fun game to play over the holiday period with the rest of the family. I'm hoping that 64 and Sunshine keep me plenty occupied until then. I'm not sure that I'll be able to wait that long though.

I imagine they'll certainly have enough content to keep you going. For me I've currently got Links Awakening and Paper Mario on the go, both of which are absolutely wonderful, utter fucking masterpieces, so I'm really spoilt right now, but it does mean I can probably only do 1 of the allstars at a time!

I want to start with Galaxy and go backwards, but the thought of having to do that level that is 8-bit Luigi is giving me anxiety already.

It sounds like you have all of the covered, but I read some reddit posts claiming that you only need 5 of the 6 missions with one of them needing to be the 3D All Stars mission.

I guess I just assumed you need all 6. Took me maybe 10 minutes to do the quizzes and play one level from the mobile game.

The coin collect sound is quieter in Mario 64 than usual.
A lot of the sound is muted in 64, including the music. It's mentioned and compared in here.

Jump accuracy can be brutal in some (many) Sunshine levels. Newer Mario games feel pretty easy in comparison. That is one of the reasons why I like Sunshine so much: it makes me work for those shines and blue coins.

Some of the Galaxy red coin comets were very hard too.

Can't wait to play this on the weekend. I have Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 but never bothered to play it because of other games, playingng it in handheld is well worth the purchase. It should have released with Galaxy 2 though :(

In my mind Galaxy is the greatest of all the Mario platformers, I just think it's superb, but Super Mario 64 was just sooooo mind blowing at the time. STill remember it. The first flyby of the castle after you come in through the pipe, and then it comes back to you and seamlessly hands the controls over to you ... we just didn't have that kind of thing before then. Playing that game made you feel like you owned something really special. Not the same impact anymore, but still I would love a remake of this game with modern graphics.

Dang, that's brutal. That happened to me with countless Amazon orders so I went with Best Buy, and it's been okay for me so far.

Still the most impressive jump I ever saw. Seeing Bob-Omb Battlefield for the first time is an inevitable memory if you're old enough. If you were there, you likely remember it. It was that crazy.

Starting this up, wow.

I've had some criticisms about how the collection is assembled (certainly not the games within), but seeing three of my all-time favorites on the cover, opening the case to a spread of wonderful memories, starting the game as 'Super Mario 2007' blared it's magic out of the speakers, and getting ready to play three of my favorite games ever, felt really, really special.

I've only gotten a few minutes to play Sunshine, but I'm loving it. And Delphino Plaza maintains it's place as the all-time earworm. I already keep catching myself humming it.

I guess this is extra special to me, because I got into gaming later than most of you guys. Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy are my NES Mario trilogy, even if I looped back later, and love those too.

That whole period of time was the most invested into videogames I will ever be, from the games, to the community, to the people at Nintendo who made them (I miss how open Nintendo used to be), and this collection just brings back all those memories.

Got it in the mail today as well. Going 64 > Sunshine > Galaxy. 100% each game. I played 64 back in 97 and I believe I did finish it, bought Mario 64 DS like 7 years ago and 100% it. Had a GameCube though never actually finished Sunshine what I can recall.. Galaxy however, I bought a Wii and Galaxy back in 2013 but I only ever played like the first few levels so Galaxy will be more or less completely new to me so looking forward to that one.

I think Mario 64 looks and plays great - no complaints at all and 31 stars in!

My dad thought I was too old to be playing games after PS1/N64 came out. Consequently, SNES was my last game console until GameCube. I still have never experienced Mario 64 with an N64 controller--I'm kinda grateful for that considering the shape of that thing! And this may be why Sunshine holds such a unique place in my heart, since the last Super Mario I had actually played was Mario World.

Is it too late to switch to curbside pick up? I ordered through them but realized I forgot to update to my current address, so I had to go with that option.
I should have done that! The fault seems to be with UPS, as Best Buy shipped it out early Thursday morning. I'm guessing the delays have been because of Covid-19?

If it was USPS, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm having stuff ordered off of Amazon totally disappear while in transit.

Mario 64 is utter trash with that camera system in this day and age. I played through the DS version a year back and it was much better. I am severely disappointed they didn’t at least add improved camera controls. I’ll never play this game again. Sunshine and Galaxy it is.

The fucking crying about this collection is pathetic, faux outrage bullshit at its finest.

These games all look great.

Sunshine and Galaxy in particular look super clean. It's crazy how gorgeous these games are/were. Feels like they weren't done justice til now.

My only real complaint is how the star bit cursor hangs around the screen unless you sort of point away and let it disappear and that it can't be controlled manually with the right stick.

Hopefully they have a patch for some of the controls stuff.
I can't believe how good sunshine looks, I have just been running around enjoying the scenery, and the water looks so inviting.

You really get the feel of how Mario controls have evolved over the years here.

I was kind of surprised, because there was a time where I would have considered Sunshine almost the perfect 3D platforming controls, yet now it feels like a minor, but noticeable step down after Odyssey.

Which, no hate. I quickly adjusted and am having so much fun. But it’s really crazy that Nintendo has much improved even on controls that felt near-perfect in the first place.

Also, Gaf Bro-tip. The old Mario Cam for Sunshine that used to be on Y (Kinda helpful when you need even more accuracy than R provides, or just to look around), is now on the right stick, with click.

All three games feel just like I remember essentially!

Quick Question, was there ever any more lore to the levels in SM64?

Just wondering since you have all the intro and world building in the intro to SM64 with the camera Lakitu pretending to be an action news reporter and Peach's invite to her Castle. You talk to Toad and he says Bowser trapped everyone inside the castle walls.

Then you jump into Bomb-Omb Battlefield and the friendly Bomb Omb says this used to be a peaceful valley until Bowser corrupted it. Help us by climbing the mountain and defeating the King etc. Then after that all possible story stuff just seems to end.

But all this stuff can be chalked up to be a fun way to explain controls. But I wonder if anyone has gone through and tried to extrapolate the different lore or fan fiction from each level since each is so different but packed with details.

Sunshines levels are all within the context of locations on Isle Defino, Galaxy was just planets I guess.

But in SM64 you have:
The battle ongoing in Bomb Omb Battlefield?
The Mystery of the Pyramids?
What sank the ship in Jolly Roger Bay?
Why does Bowser have a submarine. Did he use that to assault the castle?
The later stage with the mountains and the monkeys, Do they have a town there? Do they all live on that mountain?
What caused Big-Small world to be like that?
Where does Peach's Secret Slide lead to?
What is the invisibility cap stage supposed to be? a big drain? The storm sewer for the moat?
What's the story behind the Hazy Maze Cave? Could it be a mine? Did they break into Dorrie's cavern by accident during expansion of the mine?

It'd be cool to try to think up lore for the levels too like how some Youtubers have done with multiplayer levels in other games for example.

I always wondered if the SM64 worlds were real, or just paintings come to life after Bowser wreaked havoc. I kind of prefer that they just be paintings — it adds to the strangeness and magic of that game.
