Increasing production for the start of the generation means nothing because they are not going to only sell 10 million in the lifetime of the console, so there’s zero risk in making them now.

I haven’t seen anyone question their ability to make consoles, or sell them. People are saying they’ll sell 10 million on launch. They won’t.

They’re increasing production because they’re confident they can ship, sell, and make an increased profit by the end of this fiscal year.

Launch window isn’t launch, and no one said 10M on day 1. They will sell 10M during the launch window.

Except the digital one where they sell software they wont have to pay: shipping, packing costs, third parties selling their games, used fees not going to them etc

taking a hit on their digital console they can make back easy when people have to buy games in their store

See now this chap gets it.

What’s the launch window to you? 12 months? 6 months?

Are people forgetting how Sony did it last time? Microsoft announced the xbox one price and Sony re did their price for the E3 show.

Sony will either match or undercut the series x price.

Yep, agreed.

there’s no way they match the S though without absolutely burning through all their money.

1) 10tf is a good estimate for next gen
2) rumours put xsx at 12 and ps5 at 9
3) rumours ps5 is clocked crazy high to avoid being under spec
4) rumours of 2 xboxs
5) rumours that ps5 is now considering 2 sku
6) rumours xsx cant be 12 tf
7) Xsx confirmed at 12tf
8) claims ps5 will be 15tf
9) ps5 is 9tf overclocked to 10 tf ( sometimes)
10) rumours xbx is waiting for sony price reveal and will undercut
11) claims sony is ignoring what ms is doing and will soon reveal price (months later still nothing)
12) xss price leaks.. ms confirms xsx price
13 ) sony rumoured to be changing pricing

Whats obvious is ms has had a plan from the start.. and its all playing out how they planned ( for hardware .. halo not so much lol).

Will sony now consider a lower spec ps5? They downgraded the ps3 a lot before ( 2 hdmi ports, less active spu) just after ( removed ps2 compat) release to save money.

What now ...

This must be in the run for the most unverifiable and uninteresting nugget of information of the century. How the hell would one know whether Sony revised their pricing strategy yesterday or not? And why would they? Was Sony unaware of the cheapest entry when every Tom, Dick, Mohammed and Jin on the internet debated it, and speculated about it for more than a year? They got magically blindsided when amateur podcasters, bloggers and forum posters dwelled on ithe S since time immemorial, and for the most part got the price right?
Do people think anymore?

Aside from this game of chicken with pricing and exact release date both Sony and MS have done to the last minute which never happened this late in the game, the rest of the reveal (system) has been pretty standard for MS, but totally wacky for Sony.

Even right now, nobody even has a hands-on demo of it from any game site. And no gamers even know the exact dimensions or seen the side of it. It's always been promoted at a sharp angle. And it took them until June (I think) to even show it. And before that it was Cerny talking about blue prints on powerpoint slides and Keighley talking about the controller.

It's not like that shell wasn't already done. It sure had to be as systems manufacturing had already started in spring. So they delayed showing it till June for either a new marketing strategy of last minute reveals, or they didn't want to show it because it's an odd design. You;d think it would be revealed when Cerny did his March tech show.

Since MS finally told price and date, Sony's info should come soon. Already Friday so probably not today. But maybe next week.

As for TF guesstimates, most insiders were wrong, but the entire 10-12tf band (which most people said) was right as a whole.

None of this matters. Xbox All Access takes the sting out their price for even the lowest income gamers. 25-35 bucks a month...plus game pass in included in the deal? Thats what im doing when i get it.

Sony needs to pay attention this instead of fabricating unnecessary demand by having people answer Nathan Drake trivia to be given the right to preorder.

Did anyone expect PS5 to be under 500/600? Cost to manufacture was said to be ~450 and Sony's already said they won't sell at a loss after PS3. 400/500 seems likely now thanks to MS.

They’d be mad to take a loss on the hardware. There’s no way on this earth Xbox will outsell Playstation, even if PS5 costs more. Far too many people bought into the ecosystem already - it would take an absolute disaster on Sony’s part to lose the lead they have.

How does Xbox All Access work people who already have Gamepass for several years?

Hmmm.... a 400 Euro Ps5 would be a big money loser in the short term for Sony, but in the long run it I believe would be a killer blow to Microsoft, another generation of being a distant number three would pretty much kill the hardware part of Microsofts gaming plans, which would again in the long run Leave Sony as the dominant player in an entire sector of the industry(just like Nintendo have the hybrid market all to themselves now and are thriving)

Could be worth it in the end

Yeah I think Sony's priority is to permanently knock Microsoft out of gaming. 👏

Just to throw it out there, Game Informer staff have allegedly gone hands on with the Playstation 5. Obviously, they're not saying anything about that other than they have at the moment.

I can see the PS5 selling out at $499/$549, and I'm sure Sony know it, do they need to come in at $399, i'm not so sure. It's a tricky one to judge

Well I did say Hardware side, and wouldn't Sony want that?

Gaming has become a central revenue driver for Sony, maybe they want to solidify their position in the market as leader just like Nintendo did by brutally offing the PSP and Vita with aggressive price cuts, marketing and exclusives

Nintendo now have an entire field to themselves and are enjoying the spoils

I believe these conversations are happening to some extent with Sony executives only thing is they might not care that much about Microsoft and feel they are permanently boxed into their part of the market

Will be interesting to see what the microsoft 1st party expansion in concert with gamepass and the Series S will do for them

the xb1 included a kinect for $500 when they were both $399 consoles to begin with. Sony had room to cut there. this time around their box likely cost more to build than the xsx, which we already know is taking a loss.

$399 PS5 is probably at least a $150 loss for sony. do those digital sales earn enough for sony to recoup $150 per user?

OR, is it more profitable to lose a few customers to MS because of the $299 S but also not take a massive loss on your own console AND keep all the digital sales profits?

Are people forgetting how Sony did it last time? Microsoft announced the xbox one price and Sony re did their price for the E3 show.

That's for the full disk drive version. Without a 20-30 dollar part and licensing (yes Sony does pay licencing for UHD blu ray), it's a rather small loss to hit 399. Not 150 by a long stretch, and then the digital edition ensures higher margin sales, no used games, etc.

That cost of 450 is manufacturing, there's a lot more that goes on top before it hits market.

Which is also the case when we talk about the PS3's 805 dollar BoM to 599 MRSP or the PS4's ~380 dollar BoM and 399 MRSP. Obviously there's a lot more to it than the BoM, but this would still be closer to their smaller losses to hit 399.

if this was true, first it isn't and second, xbox would sell even less with that small price gap.
I mean, it would be like building the coffin on series S basically.

Sony was quick on the draw in 2013 when MS revealed their price. That's probably because they had good news...

Of course that's because the PlayStation conference was a few afters Xboxs. They both had the price reveal at E3.

You don't expect Sony to reveal the price shortly have Microsoft had theirs leaked right?

PS5 considerably more expensive? Sure it was, ok brah.

They would get clowned-on for even approaching the $599 USD price of the PS3 again, never mind going-over it. People still talk about that to this day, and some people out here saying 600 and 700? Come off it, mate.

There was also talk earlier on about Mark Cerny having to stick within a certain budget, and having to pick components that balance together really well within that price range, rather than just go all out, hence not having a larger hardrive size.

Now all of a sudden we're supposed to believe that Sony's box was gonna cost an arm and a leg? I just don't buy it.

Nor should they. The XSS is nowhere near as powerful or advanced as the PS5. The XSS can't even play games that are enhanced for the older, last generation XB One X. Sony doesn't have to match the XSS' price. Personally, I believe that Sony will price the cheaper PS5 DE at $399 - $450, with the regular, physical disk PS5 matching the XSX at $499.

Dear Sir: I have been requested by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company to contact you for assistance in resolving a matter. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company has recently concluded a large number of contracts for oil exploration in the sub-Sahara region. The contracts have immediately produced moneys equaling US$40,000,000. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company is desirous of oil exploration in other parts of the world, however, because of certain regulations of the Nigerian Government, it is unable to move these funds to another region. You assistance is requested as a non-Nigerian citizen to assist the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, and also the Central Bank of Nigeria, in moving these funds out of Nigeria. If the funds can be transferred to your name, in your United States account, then you can forward the funds as directed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company. In exchange for your accommodating services, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company would agree to allow you to retain 10%, or US$4 million of this amount. However, to be a legitimate transferee of these moneys according to Nigerian law, you must presently be a depositor of at least US$100,000 in a Nigerian bank which is regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria. If it will be possible for you to assist us, we would be most grateful. We suggest that you meet with us in person in Lagos, and that during your visit I introduce you to the representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, as well as with certain officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Please call me at your earliest convenience at 18-467-4975. Time is of the essence in this matter; very quickly the Nigerian Government will realize that the Central Bank is maintaining this amount on deposit, and attempt to levy certain depository taxes on it. Yours truly,

I really expected Xbox to be at $599. And PS5 right around the same. They are pretty close in power and I don’t see a way that PS5 is significantly different in price. Sure, the APU is smaller, but clocked way higher. Yields, cooling, and that hard drive bring the price up. I think the PS5 APU is probably less, but the other factors probably cancel this more or less.

The real question: Is Microsoft being aggressive and taking a loss at $499? If so, then I don’t see Sony matching. Strong fan base, strong software, they can afford to come in at $599 and may do so. They can always drop the price rapidly if sales aren’t there. But I think they will be during launch.

They don’t need to because you won’t see Apple drop their price to match the new OnePlus. PlayStation is a far far far bigger market leading brand.

The XSS is every bit as “advanced” as the PS5 though. It’s the same architecture across the board. It just has a weaker GPU.

Are people forgetting how Sony did it last time? Microsoft announced the xbox one price and Sony re did their price for the E3 show.

Sony will either match or undercut the series x price.

I personally find it hilarious that you think this is what happened - Sony built the PS4 for a $400 price point, MS decided to bundle the kinect with xbox1, they wanted to ensure all xboxes had the kinect as a peripheral so it could be targeted as a built in feature, this increased the price to $500 and no one wanted it they dropped the peripheral like a hot potato and shaved a $100 off of the price, its MS that reacted to Sony price, bad publicity and bad sales not the other way around.

Of course both are interested in how the competition prices their product, but they build things to a specific specification to match a target price, that price and the build is decided months if not at least a year in advance - they might be able to negotiate a better deal between the original base price they are targeting until release, but that might mean they decide to boost specs a bit, or they pass on the savings to maximise sales.

Right now 100% I can guarantee Sony has the price fixed and this is what they will release at, if it turns out after the first 3 months of sales its doing badly, this is where they will get reactive and try to reduce prices as quickly as possible to boost sales - I can also guarantee you its not going to be a ridiculous price - I reckon they are going to price it at $500, the machine has been built around that $500 price point if it was 600 or 700 the RAM bandwidth would be a lot higher and the gpu target would be +12TF. Both MS have built these machines to a target price point and made compromises to meet that target - this is how this works and I can almost guarantee you both had 500 as the target except.

Sony strategy has not been about maximising TF, they have been experimenting with "smart" rendering, cerny said last time round there is 2 ways to 4k:
brute forcing
"smart" rendering

The idea last gen was checkerboard rendering, but this gen AI based upscaling / rendering is gaining traction, but the other main weak point has been I/o and this is what they decided to budget the majority of that 500 into.

Microsoft have gone the more traditional route.

They have also identified I/o, but they have brought this up to standard current PC tech, but their main focus has been to hit a 12TF target.

I mean looking at their strategies its pretty evident.

I personally think the Sony strategy is the more interesting approach, but I wish it had more memory bandwidth and 48 cu's at current frequency, with the same I/o subsystem it would have been a truly awesome console but it would just be too expensive to sell to the masses I get that and the media would have been on them like rabid dogs, the same media that would happily pay and recommend the latest $1200 iphone and try and sell the masses on the new model a year later.

So it has the same 5.5Gbps I/o Subsystem, the same audio engine, the same gpu cache scrubbers etc ? No mate sorry it has a far weaker I/o subsystem and a far weaker gpu and much less memory bandwidth, its a turd mate the series X is a good console, the series S is a turd.
