Speaking during a web call on Thursday (transcribed by VGC), CFO Hiroki Totoki claimed that Sony has secured enough semiconductors – which have been in short supply during the pandemic – to achieve its fiscal year target of selling 14.8 million PS5s.

“The shortage of semiconductors has impacts in various areas and through various measures, we have been taking some action,” he said.

“For PS5, the target has been set for the number of units to be sold this year, and we have secured the number of chips that is necessary to achieve that. Regarding the supply of semiconductors, we are not concerned.”

Sony will soon have another 100 million seller under their belt. Question is, will they ever top the all mighty PS2?
Probably not.. which is why they are expanding into PC/mobile, to continue growth of the business overall despite the console market in general being somewhat stagnant at best from a customers perspective. (also why they are raising prices, getting into GAAS, probably why they are being dicks about forcing the PS5 controller on users, etc.)

They've come roaring out the gates with PS5. I have no doubt they will get close to or top PS2. As long as they keep tracking like this, PS2 will be surpassed in overall sales.

doubt it. 130m-140m is possible but i dont think PS2 will be topped anytime soon. PS2 went as low as $99 and sony barely did any price cuts for PS4. they only cut once from $399 to $299.

if they want to top the PS2 they will have to be aggressive with price cuts again but will it even be possible with PS5? thr lowest i can see it selling is for $299 with the digital edition.

Goddamn. Sony isnt fucking around. 22 million in 15 months?

Does anyone have any sales figures on how that compares to the PS4?
Shipments as of the end of their 6th quarter:
-PS5: More than 22.6M
-PS4: 22.3M
-Switch: 19.67M

Sony's goal is to outsell PS4 at the end of the FY, which means PS5 will be the fastest selling console ever, as it is now.

Since Switch was released in the opposite side of the year their Christmas periods don't happen at the same time. So temporally Switch will be above PS5 as the fastest selling console during a quarter or two.

Supply definitely seems to be getting better but you have to be really quick if you want to snag one.

I managed to order one through my phone provider -which was a confusing, obscure, process- by making sure I was there pretty much the second they went into stock, but my buddy who actually tipped me about the method wasn't so lucky because he didn't get on the site within an hour...

Actually, scalpers must be panicking right now.

We know this because whenever there’s a positive PS5 sales topic, the Xbox/Nintendo fanboys have come to reassu us time and time again that those sold units are actually just systems being bought and stored by scalpers.

Now imagine adding more than 12 million additional units on the shelves in a span of few months.

Hence, based on the valuable inputs made by the Xbox/Nintendo fanboys, we should all agree that this image below better represents the feelings of the poor scalpers right now...

Ah yes I stand corrected.
I do remember Sony being aggressive with PS2 pricing. I doubt they'd get anywhere near that level with this generation.

PS2 was also on the market for 13 years. Being available for that long enabled those numbers. PS2 existed during a time when it was easier to reduce cost through more efficient chip manufacturing processes. Chip manufacturing costs no longer fall exponentially like they used to. That's why we don't see $100 console variants like we did with the first two PlayStations. Instead we see more powerful "pro" variants being released at the same price as the original models.

14.5 million for the fiscal year.

The 22 million would be total PS5 sales, including the portion of last fiscal year that it was available.

the number in the title threw me off.

I think 14.5 million is doable.

-PS5: More than 22.6M
-PS4: 22.3M
-Switch: 19.67M

Both consoles were completely sold out. The Switch was for years. This is more about who shipped more early on.

This is ignoring the context that the PS5 will have had 2 holiday periods and the Switch will be having it's second when it passes PS5. They will probably be changing places according to what point they are at in their holiday sales launch aligned. The big "IF" though, is can PS5 surpass the 20 million mark once the supply chain is in order as this was PS4's absolute best year (20 million). The Switch will do it multiple times and last fiscal year sold a montster 28.8 million.

Actually, scalpers must be panicking right now.

I think they are more worried about supply exceeding demand more than anything else. Once the system is easily found in stores people won't buy from them.

I have no idea how high the actual demand is though but it currently exceeds supply. Which is a great situation for scalpers right now.

the longevity of PS2 was also insane and has never been matched since. in 2008 it was still outselling both xbox 360 and PS3 with almost 14m units sold. in its 8th year of being on the market.

scroll down for the chart.

Still not enough, they need to increase production if they can.

Lol, why is that news?
They make these contracts for years, so they surely have contracts securing components etc.

Do we now post news for everything that is business like usual?

that's fine but where I live we never had the digital version in stock since the first preorder wave, only more expensive bundles with a controller and two games(usually Spiderman miles morales and sackboy) of the disc edition for like $850 which is crazy because I'm not paying $350 for a controller, a 4 hour spiderman spinoff and sackboy, I'm only interested in the $400 bare digital edition, I guess I'll have to wait a while before I'll catch one of those

Good, hope they push a ton of consoles out into the living room so we can finally move on to next gen games only.

Don’t forget how regularly it was on sale for 50 bucks! I picked up one at Best Buy in the early 2010s for the hell of it, it was cheaper than a next gen game at the time.

People said this about the PS4.
Also Sony has to actually sell those consoles, who knows what will happen in the next several months, another production snag for example.

The article says

"Sony has said it hopes PS5 shipments in its FY2021 (April 2021 to March 2022) will surpass the 14.8 million PS4s shipped during the same stage of that console’s lifecycle in Sony’s FY2014."

Make of that what you will.

Yep you're right as well as another member who responded to my post.
Everything is up in the air right now around the world.
I did not consider other factors such as pricing and the viability of the aggressive pricing strategy from Sony during the PS2 days being implemented with PS5. Not at least in these uncertain pandemic hit times.

It's 'more than 22.6M' not '22M' since launch to the end of the current fiscal year.

Both consoles were completely sold out. The Switch was for years. This is more about who shipped more early on.
No, Switch wasn't sold out worldwide with new shipments selling out in a few minutes.

PS5 were released November 12 in some countries and November 19 in the rest with little shipment available, it wasn't a full Holidays on its first quarter.

Switch had its first -full- holidays in its 4th quarter, so as I said in this point will temporally pass PS5 because they don't have their holidays aligned, unless Sony is able to ship a huge amount of chips this quarter. Then Sony will have its second holiday -or the first full holiday- quarter on its 5th quarter depending on when they are able to get the big chunk of thips and will catch up.

What we know is that if Sony gets the chips they secured and are manufacture the units they expect during this quarter, at the end of their 6th quarter will be the fastest selling console ever as it's now after the 3rd quarter.

The question is more when Sony is going to get the chips and the amount they will get, to see what is going to be the exact amount of these 'more than 22.6M'. Because if they are able to ship next week a huge chunk of consoles Switch won't even temporally pass PS5. In addition to this, after the fiscal year, it will happen the same: if Sony gets enough chips will outsell Switch by a huge number to the point Switch won't temporally outsell it during its launch aligned holidays quarter, because launch aligned isn't holidays aligned.

PS5 it's outselling launch alligned PS4 until now and it's expected to outsell it after its 6th quarter while being sold out super fast and heavily supply contrained. So yes, it will have a bigger peak than the PS4. In fact, depending on when they solve the chips issue the PS5 peak year can be way higher than the PS4 one. If they had enough chips available they would sell way more than 20M in the current fiscal year, not on its peak fiscal year.

PS5 is supposed to get in 2022 Forspoken, Elder Ring, Horizon 2, GoW, GT7, Ghostwire Tokyo, FFXVI, Sifu, Stray, Howgarts Legacy, Suicide Squad, Gotham Knights and a tone of other potentially great games or with great sales and pretty likely the TLOU2 MP game who knows if with the TLOU1R and the typical yearly Insomniac game which can be Spider-Man 2 plus many more including the traditional big seller multis. Tons of games that many people will prefer to play in the new console, so if enough consoles are available PS5 is going to have a stutting year.

So, what does this mean for supply this year? Better, worse, or the same as it has been?

Better. Chips are being fabricated in other locations now, so getting them to other countries wont be as problematic. Orders are getting through now, cpu fabrications are not the issue anymore. Sony also changed some internals to make them easier to produce. From my understanding some of the components came from other parts or entirely different country/region and then were shipped to assembly factories where the console is put together and shipped.

So instead of waiting on parts coming in from different place they made changes internally so they can cut that down and makes it so you can get consoles made quicker. At this point it's not a allocation issue, more or less travel time, shipment issues of parts.

10 to 12 more million sounds good but with Christmas shopping coming around soon its still going to be hard to get one.
