You'd be surprised how many players have probably stopped paying for plus since warzone became a thing since it's a lotta players primary mp game and it's free.

Make more sense than what others are talking here.

Either playing on PC or playing F2P on PS4/PS5 without PSplus needed.

Do you keep your Netlfix sub all time? Or do you cancel when you are not watching it at all. Depending on your answer, You will understand why the PS+ is getting affected.

Netflix comparison is silly kid. I don't use Netflix sub to play BF or CoD with my friends.

People have life, like other explained.
I dont turn on my switch that much these days. Its not that I hate it. I was just too busy, and I am a gamer.

Now what do you think, non gamers would do to their Playstation? Just turn it off, and do your chorus. They will only turn it on, when they need to.

I haven't even turned on my OG xbox, which I used to play alot 2 years ago. Same for my pc these days.
OK? You wouldn't count as a MAU for xbox then. The issue is that Sony had 10 million less players that turned their playstations on in an entire month than the same time last year. That is a MASSIVE drop. I don't believe Microsoft have ever had a drop that big, even as a percentage of their MAUs. That's a big problem.

Yes, people have lives - but if you don't touch your game console for an entire month then you're generally not buying games either. If you're not buying games or playing games then that backs up the fact that console sales aren't the most important metric, because to the company you are meaningless.

You haven't turned on your "OG" xbox (the OG 2001 xbox?) for 2 years, so your console sale is irrelevant to Microsoft. You are proving why playing the console sales game is stupid.

It's a normal seasonal drop. What a lot of people don't realize is that there are many, many players out there who subscribe to PS+ on a monthly basis.
10 million MAUs, over 10%, year over year isn't a normal seasonal drop though. That's got to have alarm bells ringing at Sony HQ. 10 million less people even turned on their consoles in a month than the previous year, even though they've just sold 10 million new consoles.

Do you keep your Netlfix sub all time? Or do you cancel when you are not watching it at all. Depending on your answer, You will understand why the PS+ is getting affected.
Wait do people actually do that, cancel and resub just here and there? Do you have any stats on this? I doubt that's true. Most people that subscribe, and how most subscriptions work, is they hope that people just subscribe because it's cheap enough to then just forget about. I've never unsubscribed and resubscribed to any services I use. How poor are these people to have to be doing that, while still subscribing to a "luxury" service like Netflix?

I used to do that for gamepass, ea play, and ps+. It made no sense keeping the sub, when I am not using them. Its common sense.
The only people who keep it, are those who use it alot.
Last year, everyone was on lockdown. So people had to get those subs. Once the lockdown is finished, people didn't have a use for it. So they canceled.

Animal crossing did 31m in 1 year. While Mario kart 8, had 4 years to achieve that. Mario kart also sold 10m on that year.

So the 10m dip in Playstation is possible. Considering the console is also on other countries, unlike Xbox.

This will also apply to xbox live, and gamepass. Granted gamepass will not have that low dip, since gamers are the ones who knows about it.

Rumours point to them pushing multiplayer games, this is why, but if these multiplayer games are not any good, it will be wasted money, thats why they should focus on what they are good at, single player exclusives, which will bring in new players to playstation, leave the multiplayer stuff to third party.

Returnal, Dark Souls, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart are all "high quality" single player games. All 3 sold less than 3 million. Sony needs multiplayer hits badly.

What exactly does your bit about game sales on switch have to do with Sony losing 10 million MAUs?

Did MS lose over 10% of their MAUs from last year too?

I dont have stats for it. Since this is a common sense. People don't pay, for things they don't watch. Its like burning your money on useless stuff.

If you don't have stats to back it up then it's just a guess. I dare say most people that subscribe either stay subscribed or stay unsubscribed. Netflix's subscriber numbers year over year don't show any sign of people repeatedly unsubscribing and resubscribing later.

The number one gaming items on Amazon are ten dollar gift cards and one month PS+ subscription cards. It's the classic case of "being poor is expensive", because there's millions of poor people out there who pay ten bucks a month for PS Plus. That's why Gamepass is very lucrative btw, the amount of people who do the Xbox Live 3 year trick is utterly miniscule so Microsoft allows it.

It’s a very tiny drop considering covid had literally billions of people locked up in their houses and now with restrictions lifted people going to get out.
Also can’t compare the rev drop to MS drop because MS have PC to cut the loss.
They ought to be concerned if they continue to drop the next 3 q’s.

Almost like it was a COVID bump or something during last years in Q1.
Their Q1 matched the holiday seasons Q3 MAU, their PS+ users are up YoY.
"Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced that PlayStation™Network’s (PSN) December 2019 monthly active users have reached 103 million" (These are Q3 2019 I think), that COVID bump was yuge.
And a 10% drop would be 102.6M not 104M, over 10% would be more.

I was looking at the August PS+ lineup and my god such trash.

They are finally getting Hades on PSN but it's full price. Even after a full year of launch. Whereas on Xbox it's free on gamepass.

I'm sorry, just under 10%. That makes all the difference....

So xboxs MAUs are just under 10% down from where they were at the same time last year are they? Or are Sony the only ones that covid affected? Covids also not over, so not sure why all of a sudden everyone has stopped touching their playstations for entire months because of covid?

Also why are you comparing Q1 to Q3? The fact is they're 10 million MAUs down year over year. That's concerning, and anyone saying it's not has questionable motives.

Yes, it does, 8.7% v over 10% makes all the difference.

How should I know? Xbox adds Minecraft users to it's MAU. What's their MAU numbers from the same time last year and this? And since when is this an Xbox thread?

Minecraft users are Xbox MAUs lol. That's why they're counted.

9% vs 10%. Whoop de Doo. How does that make "all the difference"? Can't wait to hear how 10% would be bad but 8.7% is amazing.

Yes because MineCraft isn't on other platforms, is it? You said OVER 10% which would be 2m less.
Who the fuck said 8.7% drop is amazing? 🤡

Almost like Q3 is a holiday period and they get more MAU normally during that time? Nah that can't be why.

In the company’s Q1 financial results published on Thursday, which cover the three months ended June 30, Sony reported total PS Plus subscribers of 46.3 million, which is up 1.3m year-on-year but down by over 1 million compared to the two most recent quarters.

It’s the first time PlayStation Plus users have significantly dipped between quarters during this time period.

The corporation also reported a decline in monthly active users during June 2021, which represents a decline of 10 million year-on-year. Sony says its monthly active users are the estimated total number of unique accounts that played games or used services on the PlayStation Network during the last month of the quarter.

Speaking in a webcast following publication of the results (transcribed by VGC), Sony’s chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki blamed the decline on last year’s stay-at-home restrictions and the increase they had on game activity.

“Of course, 104m is not a strong number, but are we looking at it as a declining trend? We don’t think so,” he said. “We are trying to analyse different elements, but there are no conspicuous trends that we can capture. Maybe this month or next month we will have to continue to watch and do an analysis.”

He added: “At the risk of repetition, may I say that last year the stay-at-home demand was so significant in hindsight, so compared to that period last year as a trend of course [it’s declined]. [But] compared to fiscal 2019 there is an increase.

“So, we will monitor the situation carefully and we will deepen the engagement and enhance the platform, therefore during the coming fiscal year we will take actions to support this business.”

According to eight years of data collated by Resetera, it’s the first time PlayStation Plus users have significantly dipped between quarters during this time period.

So, Anal-ysts drinking their own manjuice.

How are steams mau's looking?
Gonna have to wait a while longer for some new data, the last was from the start of the year and they only do it once a year by the look. Looks to be over 120 million from that data but its too old to be of any real comparison. Peak concurrent users probably suggest it hasn't increased much.

That is not true . Nintendo switch and home consoles were sold out in many areas because companies couldn’t make enough thanks to people staying at home and needed something to waste time. Not the other way around lol
At least in my country, we have red numbers all over the place. Yes, consoles are sold out, but unemployment statistics are way clearer than consoles sales

What you say is half true, people do get tired or stop paying attention to their consoles after a while (this is why the Wii became irrelevant so fast).

The PlayStation consoles are still the ones that get the most releases and the most current ones as well, the PS5 sells pretty well. My guess is that some PS4 owners are less interested, maybe a good number of them are holding out to play on a PS5 when they can, etc.

We will see how MS numbers turn out (or didn't we just see them?). IT sets Sony back to there they were a couple of quarters ago, it's very possible that many parents told their kids, you know what it's summer... things are mostly back to normal so get off your butt and go outside, they killed the subscription, another option would be that trials lapsed, those who did not need it let it go. Either way, nothing grows forever like that, there are set backs and periods of slow down, corrections, etc. this is the nature of growth.

Maybe we will have a definite answer in 2 or 3 quarters time, but given the PS5 sales numbers I doubt that there is a PlayStation decline overall. I have not looked at the numbers, but wasn't there a thread about the playsation revenue being at an all time high?

For the price of 1 full priced PS4 game (yearly sub), you got this year :
  • Maneater
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Greedfall
  • Destruction AllStars
  • Control: Ultimate Edition
  • Concrete Genie
  • Final Fantasy VII Remake
  • Maquette
  • Remnant: From the Ashes
  • Farpoint
  • Days Gone
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm
  • Zombie Army 4: Dead War
  • Wreckfest
  • Stranded Deep
  • Battlefield 5
  • Operation: Tango
  • Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown
  • Star Wars: Squadrons
  • A Plague Tale: Innocence
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  • WWE 2K Battlegrounds
  • Hunter's Arena: Legends
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville
  • Tennis World Tour 2
With 4 other months to go...

If there's not even 2-3 games that interest you in that list, then sure I guess PS+ isn't for you.

good list of games. but if you stop subscribing they go

The other issue is that you need to be subbed at the times the games become available. A new subscriber wouldn't have any of those games only someone subbed for the last year would. The service favors legacy customers.

They should merge PS+ and PS Now asap
PS Now isn't even officially supported in many markets. Plus even if you can still download some games to your hdd offering a streaming service isn't an offer for everyone.

Buy subs during boxing week or black friday. Easy 30% off. That's how I roll.

Just like GP or any other sub service. Not sure what the point is here.

the point is that its pointless starting lists because people who haven't subscribed yet can't access those games, and who knows how great/bad the next years worth of games will be.

while you bring up gamepass its much better in terms of value for amount of games

I imagine a good portion of their player base is there only for the exclusives. I know I'm one of them at least. But my PS+ sub is still active. How often do I actually use it? Not at all. I'll claim the games, but I almost never play multiplayer on Playstation.

All in all, looking at what's coming down the pipeline, I don't really see anything right now that would warrant a subscription other than the free monthly games. Unless you get into 3rd party on Playstation. COD, Destiny, NBA2kXX and the like...I mean, what makes folks buy a sub otherwise?

Consoles pay for MP games mandatory, aside of free MP games. Because of that, both Xbox live and ps+ are higher.
With more games being MP free, like warzone, fortnite, people will unsub both service, since it doesn't serve any purpose, aside of free games.

Pc side as free online, so they don't need sub for it. Which is why gamepass pc is enticing to them.

Very good point. Didn't think about the F2P multiplayer games that right now are the most popular. So this is all making sense. I was gonna ask how you sell that many consoles and lose subscibers...but you nailed it.

I think you are overestimating the intelligence of consumers
People are stingy when it comes to money. They will rob your products at heavily discounted price, before they buy it. Only those who have the money, will spend it easily. Regular folks are like hawks with their money, aside of gambling, and beer though.

PS+ is definitely cheaper in US as well. $10 a month vs $15 for GPU and PS+ has a yearly option that equates to $5 a month. Of course, GP has more games, but that only means something if it has what you want to play. I'm playing Immortals right now so neither subscription help me in that case.

I hate to admit, but he got a point. People used to pay PS Plus for playing multiplat games while playing exclusives on Playstation.

Some exclusives are going to PC, and PC have both free online and PS/Xbox games. Not saying everybody will run from Playstation, but maybe this explain the drop on Playstation Plus.
PC are becoming affordables. I watched Days Gone PC port and don't require so much of the machine to play. Death Stranding is another great PC port.
Dualsense works on both PC and PS5, but not on PS4. You don't even need a Dualshock 4/Dualsense to play Playstation games on PC.

I don't remember the last time I get PS Plus.

Nice can you provide a link to a affordable PC that has comparable power to a PS5.

you brought gamepads into it not me. yes it is more expensive at double the price but you get much more for your money
